Paris kosher supermarket that was scene of deadly 2015 terror attack damaged by arson, Jew-hate in Switzerland hits new high
2025-03-22
[IsraelTimes] A kosher supermarket in Paris that was the scene of a deadly terror attack in 2015 was targeted in an overnight arson attack, reports say.

The front of the Hyper Cacher supermarket was damaged and there was some damage to the interior of the store.

A man was seen on CCTV setting fire to four containers placed in front of the entrance to the supermarket, before setting fire to a nearby dumpster, reports say.

Twelve people were massacred at Charlie Hebdo’s Paris offices on January 7, 2015, by the brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi, who said they were acting on behalf of Al-Qaeda to avenge the paper’s decision to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

A day later, Amedy Coulibaly killed a 27-year-old police officer during a traffic check outside Paris, before killing four Jewish men during a hostage-taking at the Hyper Cacher supermarket on January 9, claiming to act in the name of the Islamic State terror group.

Antisemitism in Switzerland reached ‘unprecedented level’ in 2024, study finds
It will be interesting to see how much that has changed a year or two from now.
[IsraelTimes] Antisemitic incidents in Switzerland have reached an “unprecedented level,” rising 43 percent in 2024, according to a new report by the Swiss Federation of Israelite Communities (SIG) and the GRA Foundation against Racism and Antisemitism.

Some 221 antisemitic incidents were recorded during the year, compared to 155 in 2023 and 57 in 2022, the report says.

The report notes a sharp rise in physical violence during the year, including an attempted arson attack on a synagogue and 11 cases of assault.

A knife attack in Zurich by a teen who is said to have shouted “Death to Jews” nearly killed a 50-year-old man, the report notes.

Another 1,596 incidents were recorded online, with over 55% found on the Telegram platform. The figure is based on new software used for monitoring online media, and cannot be compared with previous figures, SIG says.

The rise in antisemitism since Hamas launched its war against Israel on October 7, 2023, has significantly affected the Jewish community’s sense of security, with many now avoiding displaying religious symbols in public out of fear of harassment or violence, the report says.

The SIG and GRA call for stronger government action, including increased security for Jewish institutions and legal measures to combat online hate speech.

Ali Riza Polat,
...born in Istanbul, he moved with his family to France at age three, and grew up in the same Paris suburb as his dear friend Mr. Coulibaly, where he early embarked on a life of drug dealing and petty crime. He claims to have converted to Islam (from what?) in 2014. His major triumph appears to have been marrying his defense lawyer, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, who once defended Carlos the Jackal ...

All three were killed by police, and in December 2020 a French court convicted 14 people of helping to carry out the attacks. Polat and Ramdani were the only ones to appeal their convictions.

Polat’s new sentence carries a minimum jail time of 20 years before he can be eligible for parole.

The Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher killings marked the start of a deadly wave of Islamist attacks around Europe, in particular the harrowing killing spree a few months later at the Bataclan concert hall and at Gay Paree bars and cafes in November 2015.

satirical magazine and the Hyper Cacher kosher store.

In addition to Ali Riza Polat, a 35-year-old French citizen of Ottoman Turkish descent, three others on trial since September for the attacks were convicted Wednesday of the lesser offense of being a part of a terrorist enterprise. Polat was sentenced to 30 years behind bars, Le Monde reported.

The four men were among 14 people on trial in connection with the terrorist assaults in January 2015, whose actual perpetrators were killed after jointly planning the attacks.

Brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi carried out the attack on Charlie Hebdo and were killed there after murdering 12 people. Their partner, Amedy Coulibaly, killed four at the kosher store two days later before he was rubbed out by police. Coulibaly also killed a police officer.

Polat and the others — Nezar Pastor Alwatik, Amar Ramdani and Willy Prevost, who received sentences ranging from 13 years to 20 years — were prosecuted for providing the killers with the necessary weapons, equipment or intelligence to carry out the attacks.

Another six defendants were convicted of belonging to a criminal enterprise without the aggravated element of terrorism.

‘I am innocent’: Charlie Hebdo, kosher grocery suspect denies charges
2020-09-05
[IsraelTimes] Ali Riza Polat appears in French court where he faces most serious charge among 14 accused, complicity in a terrorist act, which carries a potential life sentence.

A primary suspect in the trial over the 2015 massacres at satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
and a Kosher supermarket in Gay Paree denied on Friday any responsibility for the attacks carried out by jihadists, one of whom was a close associate.

Ali Riza Polat, a 35-year-old Franco-Ottoman Turkish man, was placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
a few weeks after the terror attack that stunned La Belle France, with Sherlocks saying he tried to flee the country several times heading for Syria.

"I am innocent!" Polat told the court, his head shaved and his face hidden behind a cloth mask.

"I’m here because certain people, lying squealers, said all sorts of nonsense... but they’re lying," he said.

Born in Istanbul, Polat moved to La Belle France when he was three and said he fell into petty crime when he was 13 or 14, later starting to deal drugs.

He grew up in the same rough Gay Paree suburb of Grigny as Amedy Coulibaly, who killed a police officer on January 8, 2015 and four people at the Hyper Cacher Jewish supermarket the next day before being killed by police.

Those attacks came just after two brothers, Said and Cherif Kouachi, stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices, killing 12.

Suspected of helping provide the weapons for all three button men, Polat is facing the most serious charge among the 14 accused: complicity in a terrorist act, which carries a potential life sentence.

But Polat, who says he converted to Islam in 2014,
..a Turk who was not born Muslim? There aren’t many of those left...
insisted he had no role in the attacks.

"I have nothing to do with them. You cannot kill the innocent... I am not violent mostly peaceful," he said.

For his defense, Polat has chosen Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, the lawyer who defended the convicted international terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, better known as "Carlos the Jackal." She later became his lover companion and married him in a religious ceremony in prison, though the union has no legal validity.

The trial of Polat and thirteen other suspects accused of aiding the three button men opened Wednesday, and is set to run until November.

France's Charlie Hebdo sells out with Prophet Mohammed cartoons reprint, Macron decries Muslim separatism
2020-09-05
[AlAhram] French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, the target of a jihadist attack in 2015, said Friday that its latest edition reprinting controversial caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed had sold out in just one day.

Wednesday's issue featured a dozen cartoons mocking the prophet of Islam, including images that sparked huge protests when first published, to mark the start of the trial this week of alleged accomplices to the massacre.

Charlie Hebdo distributed three times its normal print run on Wednesday, but eager readers pounced on the paper and many intending to grab their copy later in the day were left frustrated.

A new batch of 200,000 copies is currently being printed and will hit French newstands from Saturday.

"It shows that we are supported, that freedom of expression, secularism and the right to blasphemy

are not obsolete values, and that they are supported by the French public who chose to buy the issue," a Charlie cartoonist who goes by the pen name "Juin" told AFP.

Twelve people, including some of La Belle France's most celebrated cartoonists, were killed on January 7, 2015, when brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi went on a gun rampage at the paper's offices in Gay Paree.

"We will never lie down. We will never give up," director Laurent "Riss" Sourisseau wrote in an accompanying editorial to Wednesday's issue, which was headlined: "All of this, just for that."

The decision to reprint the cartoons sparked angry condemnations from Pakistain, Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. as well as Egypt's highest Moslem authority al-Azhar.

On Friday, thousands rallied in anti-La Belle France demonstrations across Pakistain, with protestors calling for boycotts and the French ambassador's expulsion.

But Charlie Hebdo defended its decision in the editorial, arguing that republishing the cartoons was "essential."

"We worked on the principle that some people don't know the cartoons, some weren't even born when they were published by Charlie in 2006, and they need to understand why the attacks happened," Juin said.

"The right to blasphemy and freedom of speech exist if we use it. For us, it was justifiable to reprint the cartoons because it shows that these rights still exist and allows us to defend them," he added.

Macron decries 'Islamic separatism,' defends blasphemy

[AlAhram] Macron defended satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo
, which published caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that helped inspire two French-born Islamic murderous Moslems to mount a deadly January 2015 attack on the paper's newsroom.

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Friday what he called "Islamic separatism" in his country and those who seek French citizenship without accepting La Belle France's "right to commit blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...

Macron defended satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which published caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that helped inspire two French-born Islamic murderous Moslems to mount a deadly January 2015 attack on the paper's newsroom.

The weekly republished the images this week as the trial began of 14 people over the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and on a kosher supermarket.

Speaking at a ceremony Friday celebrating La Belle France's democratic history and naturalizing new citizens, the French president said, "You don't choose one part of La Belle France. You choose La Belle France....The Republic will never allow any separatist adventure."

Freedom in La Belle France, Macron said, includes "the freedom to believe or not to believe. But this is inseparable from the freedom of expression up to the right to blasphemy.''

Noting the trial that opened Wednesday, he said, "To be French is to defend the right to make people laugh, to criticize, to mock, to caricature.''

The 2015 attacks killed 17 people and marked the beginning of a wave of violence by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group in Europe.

Macron's centrist government has promised a law in the coming months against "Islamic separatism" but it is not clear yet exactly what it would police. Some critics fear it could unfairly stigmatize La Belle France's largely moderate Moslem population, the largest in western Europe.

Trial date finalized for Charlie Hebdo, Hyper Cacher attacks
2019-10-24
[IsraelTimes] 14 people to go on trial May 4 to July 10 for aiding forces of Evil in January 2015 attacks on satirical magazine, kosher supermarket in Gay Paree.

Fourteen people will go on trial in Gay Paree next May over the January 2015 attacks on the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
newspaper and a kosher supermarket that heralded a wave of jihadist strikes on La Belle France, judicial sources said Wednesday.

The trial will take place from May 4 to July 10, lawyers and a judicial source told AFP.

Seventeen people were killed over three days in and around Gay Paree in January 2015 in the attacks.

Cherif Kouachi and his brother Said killed 12 people on January 7 at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Gay Paree, including some of La Belle France’s best known cartoonists.

Over the following two days, a third gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, rubbed out a young policewoman and killed four people at a kosher supermarket.

All three button men, who had claimed allegiance to jihadist groups, were killed by police.

The 14 accused are suspected of having provided logistical aid to the attackers.

The case will be heard by a special court seated, for logistical reasons, in a new, bigger building in the extreme northwest of Gay Paree and not the Palace of Justice in the center that would ordinarily have hosted it, the sources said.

Eleven of the suspects are in detention, but three are set to be tried in their absence.

They include Hayat Boumedienne, the partner of Coulibaly, who Ottoman Turkish authorities said at the time had crossed into Syria as her partner shot the policewoman.

Also on the run are brothers Mohammed and Mehdi Belhoucine, who also left for the Iraq-Syria region just before the attacks.

Unconfirmed reports have said all three could now be dead after fierce bombing campaigns in the area to defeat the jihadists there.

Responsibility for the attack against Charlie Hebdo was claimed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
, an offshoot of the main al-Qaeda organization.

When it begins in April 2020, the trial of the 14 will be the first such major process against jihadists in La Belle France since the 2017 trial over the 2012 attacks by Mohammed Merah.

Merah killed three soldiers in March 2012 before gunning down a rabbi, two of the rabbi’s children, aged three and five, and an eight-year-old girl at a Jewish school in Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
. A police sniper killed him during a siege at his home.

His brother Abdelkader was in April handed a 30-year jail term as an accomplice in the murders.

A wave of jihadist attacks on La Belle France that started with the Charlie Hebdo killings has claimed 255 lives so far, including 90 at the Bataclan concert hall as part of coordinated strikes on multiple Gay Paree targets on November 13, 2015.

French trial for support team of Charlie Hebdo, Hyper Cacher terror attacks finally scheduled
2019-06-08
[IsraelTimes] 14 people are accused of providing the three Jihadist button men, who were killed by Gay Paree police, logistical support and weapons; trial to begin next year.

Suspects linked to the deadly jihadist attacks that struck the Gay Paree region in January 2015, killing 17 people over a three-day period, will stand trial from April to July next year, a legal source said on Friday.

A special Gay Paree criminal court will hear the case against 14 people accused of helping the attackers, providing them with logistical support and the weapons to carry out the attacks.

The victims included 12 people killed at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo

by Cherif Kouachi and his brother Said
...Algerian-French known wolves who’d been members of the Buttes-Chaumont network that sent jihadis to Al Qaeda in Iraq following the 2003 invasion...
on January 7, 2015. They targeted the paper for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Over the following two days the third gunman, Amedy Coulibaly,
..the Mali-Frenchman whose wife Hayat Boumeddiene decamped for ISIS in Syria just before that particular excitement. She reportedly died of an airstrike during the Battle of Baghuz Fawqani...
killed a policewoman in the Montrouge suburb south of Gay Paree where authorities think he may have initially been targeting a nearby Jewish school.

He then killed four people at Hyper Cacher, a kosher supermarket during a hostage standoff with police.

All three button men were killed by police.
Of passing interest: their mentor, French-Algerian radical preacher Djamel Beghal, one of Al Qaeda’s key men in the web connecting jihadis in England and France to the home office and to the Algerian Salafist Group for Prayer and Combat (GSPC), was stripped of French citizenship and expelled to Algeria last year.
The three attackers had claimed allegiance to jihadist groups.
...that is, Al Qaeda and ISIS, but the attack was credited to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which apparently funded the operation.
The source told AFP the trial would run from April 20 to July 3, 2020.

Jihadist tied to Charlie Hebdo attack handed over to France for trial
2018-12-24
[IsraelTimes] Peter Cherif, also known as Abu Hamza, was a prominent member of al-Qaeda who fled La Belle France in 2011 and has been designated a terrorist by the US government.

The French jihadist Peter Cherif, tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in Djibouti on December 16, was placed in jug when he arrived in La Belle France on Sunday morning, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner and the Gay Paree Public Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Cherif, also known as Abu Hamza, is believed by Sherlocks to have been close to brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi, perpetrators of the attack against the Charlie Hebdo

satirical newspaper in January 2015 that left 11 people dead.

After the attack, Cherif "fled French justice," but must now "answer for his actions," Castaner tweeted, praising the "effectiveness" of La Belle France’s security services.

The 36-year-old Frenchie was arrested in Djibouti on December 16. According to the Djibouti presidency, he arrived in the country by sea via the coastal town of Obock from Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and was carrying false identity documents.

He was quickly handed to La Belle France, boarding an Air La Belle France flight for Gay Paree on Saturday at around 10:20 p.m. handcuffed in the back of the plane and under police escort, according to an AFP photographer.

"Peter Cherif was arrested at [Gay Paree’s Roissy Airport] and taken into custody as part of a preliminary investigation opened by the Gay Paree prosecutor’s office in May 2017" on charges of terrorism and criminal conspiracy, Gay Paree’s counterterrorism prosecutors said Sunday.

The investigation of Cherif is being carried out by La Belle France’s General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI). Under French law, Cherif can be held on the terror charges for up to 96 hours before he must be brought before a judge to have his remand extended.

According to officials, Cherif was an al-Qaeda operative in Yemen and was a close friend of the Kouachi brothers. He is suspected of providing logistical support to the terrorists, and helping to organize the attack.

Arrested for the first time in Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
Iraq, in late 2004 while fighting in the ranks of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Cherif was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Baghdad, then beat feet from an Iraqi prison in March 2007 and fled to Syria.

Later extradited to La Belle France, he was incarcerated there for 18 months. He disappeared in March 2011, the last day of his trial in Gay Paree, when he fled to Yemen. He has been designated by both French and US authorities as a terrorist.

France Expels 'Mentor' of 2015 Jihadist Attackers to Algeria
2018-07-17
[AnNahar] La Belle France on Monday expelled a radical Islamic preacher to Algeria after his release from prison, where he became a mentor to at least two jihadis who carried out deadly attacks on a satirical newspaper and a Jewish supermarket in January 2015, officials said.

Djamel Beghal was given a 10-year jail term in 2005 after being sent to La Belle France following his arrest in the United Arab Emirates shortly after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in the US.

He was suspected of leading a network charged by the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now beyond all cares and woe...
to attack American interests in La Belle France and is considered by French officials to have been a mentor for several generations of aspiring jihadists.

His activities have also highlighted the struggle by French authorities to prevent Islamic radicalisation in prisons, which have proved fertile recruiting grounds for jihadist fighters.

Beghal, now 52 and stripped of his French nationality, was freed from the Vezin-le-Coquet prison near the western city of Rennes early Monday.

He was brought to Charles de Gaulle airport near Gay Paree for a flight to Algiers, a source close to the case told AFP.

Beghal had been under surveillance for suspected radicalism by French intelligence agents since the mid-1990s, following his arrival in the country from his native Algeria when he was 21 years old.

While serving his first prison sentence Beghal met Cherif Kouachi, one of the brothers who massacred 12 people in an attack on the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
magazine in January 2015.

Amedy Coulibaly, the man who killed a policewoman and then four shoppers at a Jewish supermarket just outside Gay Paree that same month, also came under Beghal's influence at the Fleury-Merogis prison south of Gay Paree, where he also met Kouachi.

After their release, both Kouachi and Coulibaly visited Beghal while he was serving out his sentence under house arrest.

Beghal was tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
again in 2010 as part of a plot to free him as well as Smain Ait Ali Belkacem, an Algerian who helped carry out Gay Paree kabooms in 1995 which killed eight people.

La Belle France has suffered a wave of deadly terror attacks since January 2015 which have claimed nearly 250 lives, prompting the government to make permanent several state of emergency measures as part of a tough new anti-terror law enacted last year.

Terror Sherlocks moved to arrest them after a 44-year-old man from the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, who was in contact with the pair, indicated he was "planning on heading to the mainland to offer them logistical support."

The prisoner, who was behind bars for attempting to travel to jihadist-held territory in Syria, told Sherlocks he "wanted to kill a prison guard" in the name of IS.

La Belle France has suffered a string of jihadist attacks over the past two years that have left more than 240 people dead.

Three people are in jug on suspicion of supplying the firearms used by Islamist terrorist Amedy Coulibaly in his attack on the Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket in Gay Paree in January 2015, sources told AFP on Wednesday.

Two women, aged 23 and 31, were jugged

in Roubaix in northern La Belle France and a 42-year-old man in the Gay Paree region on the night between Monday and Tuesday by anti-terror police, a source close to the case has said.

According to another source, the two women are close relatives of an alleged smuggler, Samir L., who was indicted in April for suspected links to the weapons used by Coulibaly in the January 9, 2015 attack.

DNA traces of one of the women and the man were allegedly found on one of the weapons.

Investigators can hold the suspects for 96 hours before bringing them before a judge.

The attack on the Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket came two days after a jihadist terror rampage at the officers of the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
satirical magazine perpetrated by brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi.

During the Hyper Cacher attack, Coulibaly murdered four people, before being killed in a police raid assault. A day before the attack, Coulibaly killed a municipal police officer in the southern Gay Paree suburb of Montrouge.

According to Sherlocks, the weapons found in Coulibaly’s possession were part of a cache of 200-250 formerly military weapons imported from Slovakia by an ex-mercenary who allegedly sold them to criminal groups, including Samir L., Coulibaly’s supplier.

ISIS murderous Moslems from further advancing toward the city.

The army said in a statement on Saturday that festivities are underway between government forces and the terrorists, who have advanced to the city’s outskirts.

The statement said that the Lions of Islam had seized areas to the northwest and southeast of the historic city.

According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the terrorist group launched the recent offensive late on Thursday, when it seized grain silos northeast of Palmyra, and has since taken at least partial control of oil and gas fields to the city’s northwest.

The Syrian army, backed by popular forces and a wave of Russian Arclight airstrikes, retook the ancient city from ISIS on March 27 following weeks of military operations.

Syrian army and allied forces are also busy driving the Takfiri murderous Moslems from the strategic northwestern city of Aleppo. On Friday, government forces liberated 52 blocks in the eastern parts of the city and are now in control of 93 percent of the whole city, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The recent army gains come despite the persistent financial and military support that many foreign states have been providing to the Lions of Islam since 2011 to bring about the ouster of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

ISIS enters Palmyra

BEIRUT: Fighters of the Daesh group on Saturday re-entered Syria’s famed ancient desert city of Palmyra from which they were driven out eight months ago, a monitor said.

“IS entered Palmyra on Saturday and now occupies its northwest. There is also fighting with the army in the city center,” said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The jihadists began an offensive in recent days near the town which is on UNESCO’s world heritage list.

In May last year, Daesh seized several towns in Homs province including Palmyra, where they caused extensive damage to many of its ancient sites.

They were ousted from Palmyra in March by Syrian regime forces backed by Russia.

ISIS captures Palmyra

AMMAN/BEIRUT: Daesh militants on Saturday captured most of the ancient city of Palmyra after penetrating Syrian regime’s army defenses and securing strategic heights around the ancient city in eastern Syria following a surprise assault, a monitoring group and rebels said.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were fears for the lives and safety of civilians inside the city because many of them were pro-regime.

The opposition and the war monitor said with the exception of the southern parts, most of the city was now in the hands of the militants who had waged an attack on several fronts.

Meanwhile, the regime’s army tightened its grip Saturday on opposition fighters besieged in Aleppo along with thousands of civilians.

Airstrikes pummeled the shrinking opposition enclave in east Aleppo as US Secretary of State John Kerry said the regime’s “indiscriminate bombing” amounted to crimes against humanity.

Western powers meeting in Paris called for peace talks to resume and for civilians to be allowed to leave Aleppo, where tens of thousands have already fled the offensive.

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said the world is watching “the last steps” in the Aleppo battle and evacuating civilians must be a priority.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition has killed a key leader of Daesh in Syria, the Pentagon said on Saturday.

“Coalition warplanes targeted and killed Tunisian Boubaker Al-Hakim, in Raqqa, Syria” on Nov. 26, Pentagon spokesman Ben Sakrisson said in a statement.

“Al-Hakim was a Daesh leader and longtime terrorist with deep ties to French and Tunisian radical elements,” he added.

Al-Hakim is also suspected of involvement in extremist attacks against Tunisian political leadership in 2013, Sakrisson said.

“His removal degrades Daesh’s ability to conduct further attacks in the West and denies Daesh a veteran extremist with extensive ties,” he added.

Hakim’s death also “denies Daesh a key figure with extensive historical and current involvement in facilitation and external operations and degrades their ability to conduct terror attacks around the world,” the statement read.

Separately, the Turkish army and its allies on Saturday entered the Daesh bastion of Al-Bab in northern Syria, the observatory said.

“They entered Al-Bab from the northwest after violent clashes with the radicals as Turkish artillery bombarded the town,” the observatory said. Heavy fighting was ongoing late Saturday in the town near the Turkish border, he said.
Ynet relates Babouker al Hakim's pre-death history:
Hakim, a 33-year-old French Tunisian, was a mentor to the brothers who gunned down cartoonists at the French paper Charlie Hebdo in January 2015.

Soon after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, el Hakim wound up in a network of French jihadis and fought with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. ISIS began as an al-Qaida affiliate in Iraq led by al-Zarqawi, until Zarqawi was killed in a US airstrike in June 2006.

El Hakim was arrested in Syria and sent to France, where he was convicted in 2008 and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was considered at the time to be among the most radicalized of the network of young extremists from the Paris area, which included the brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi.

Released from prison in early 2011,
...he must have been credited with time served while awaiting trial, or else he was a seriously model prisoner...
el Hakim is believed to have moved to Tunisia, where he claimed responsibility in 2014 for the assassinations of two political figures. By then, he was high up in ISIS's ranks and was believed to play a role in the group's external operations.

El Hakim moved back and forth between Syria and Iraq using networks of smugglers and jihadis, according to court records obtained by The Associated Press. He appeared on French television calling on friends in Paris to join him.

"I am in Iraq, I'm doing jihad. And all my brothers who are there, should come and defend Islam," he said.
