Pir’s disciple slaughtered in Rajshahi
2016-05-08
[Dhaka Tribune] An elderly follower of a Pir or Muslim preacher has been slaughtered in a mango grove at Tanor upazila in Rajshahi.

The victim, Mohammad Shahidullah, 55, is the son of late Habibur Rahman of Mohanandakhali area of Nouhata under Poba Upazila. He was a follower of Pir Imam Mahdi from Goalanda in Rajbari district.

He was found slit throat in a mango orchard owned by homoeopathic doctor Abul Hasan in Jhumarpara village of Tanor on Friday evening. Police recovered the body on information and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College for post-mortem examination.

Victim’s son Russel Ahmed filed a case with Tanor police yesterday morning. He mentioned that his father had land-related conflict with Shajahan and Piar Ali of Nouhata for the last one decade.

Tanor police OC Abdur Razzaq told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that they were trying to find the motive of the murder and had already started drives to arrest the culprits.

"The victim was hit by a sharp weapon in the throat," Razzaq said, adding that there was no involvement of snuffies in the attack.

On January 9, Rajshahi College political science student Dablu Hembron was slaughtered at his house at Mondumala Moyenpur village of Tanore. He went home after completing master’s examination. Police are yet to solve the mystery.

Since last year around 30 people including Hindu and Christian preachers, Pirs and their followers, teachers, secularists and war crimes trial activists have been killed in attacks by machete-wielding snuffies in Dhaka and elsewhere. Rajshahi University teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique was hacked to death near his house in the city's Shalbagan area on April 23.

Brother of slain IS IT expert finances local militants
2016-01-08
[Dhaka Tribune] Police in Dhaka have claimed that the elder brother of Saiful Haque Sujan, a UK-based businessman who later became a computer hacker for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and killed in an air strike in Syria on December 10, is also involved in terror financing in Bangladesh.

At least five family members and relatives of Saiful including his wife Saima Akhter Mukta and elder brother Ataul Haque Sabuj are currently working for the IS either in Syria or in Spain, several police officials confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.

Saiful was killed near Raqqah in a US-led air strike.

Investigators claimed that they had foiled attempts of murderous Moslem activities in early December by arresting Saiful's father Abul Hasanat, 67, and four others with Tk39 lakh in their possessions.

Saiful owned iBacs Technologies, an IT firm established in 2005 in the UK. His brother Sabuj, who lives in Spain, is the managing director of the firm. Sabuj moved to Spain around six months ago and wed a converted Muslim woman.

The company operates business in the UK, the USA, Denmark, Jordan and Australia, according to the website.

Investigators said that they had launched probe against iBacs and its accounts after the arrest of the five persons in Dhaka. They found that iBacs is used as a platform for financing terror outfits in at least 10 countries.

Detectives said that the accused were collecting funds and recruiting members for a terrorist organization, but did not want to disclose the name of the outfit.

Police say Saiful's widow Saima, her youngest sister Rabeya Akhter Tumpa along with Saiful's friend Shariful Islam Emon, another UK-based IT entrepreneur, with three toddlers are currently working for the IS. Emon and his wife travelled to London with Saiful.

DB Inspector Kabir Hossain lodged a First Information Report with Tejgaon police in connection with the arrest on December 9.

The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act accusing seven people -- Saiful and his two brothers Sabuj and Hasanul Haque Galib, 15; Saiful's father Hasanat; his brother-in-law Tajul Islam Shakil, 25; iBacs's Dhaka office Accountant Nahiduddozza Miah, 30, and a so-called house tutor Nahidul Islam Nahid, 19.

"We jugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
them in Dhaka when they were handing over Tk38.86 lakh to terrorists," DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said.

According to the FIR, Hasanul and his father Hasanat, and Nahiduddozza, Nahidul and Tajul were active operatives of a murderous Moslem organization.

They gathered in front of TCB Bhaban in the capital's Karwan Bazar area on December 8 to carry out subversive activities in the capital. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the case did not mention the name of the outfit they were working for. The money was seized from the possession of Hasanat.

Investigators said they were examining all the financial details of iBacs.

According to the FIR, Ataul and Saiful had sent the money to Nahiduzzaman recently through one Anwar of "Binimoy Money Exchange" in Motijheel to carry out murderous Moslem activities.

The police also interrogated Saiful's step mother Momtaz Begum, who had identified Saiful from his photograph, and her 12-year-old son Ehsanul Haque Sakib recently. Later they were released.

The family said Saiful had gone to the UK for studies in 2003. In late 2014, he took his pregnant wife and their son, and nephew Aman to London.

Terror-linked madressahs to face action: Khanzada
2015-01-17
[DAWN] The Punjab government says it has received threat alerts for airports, prisons, schools and sensitive installations, besides assassination of known personalities and kidnap for ransom.

It has also pledged to take action against the madressahs found involved in terrorism.

Security has been put on red alert after reports of terrorists attacks on airports, prisons and other sensitive installations, Home Minister retired Col Shuja Khanzada told a presser at the Chief Ministers Office here on Thursday.

Schools may be hit; there may be (indiscriminate) firing incidents, while murder of prominent personalities and kidnap for ransom are also feared.

Threats existed and all security forces had been put on high alert to counter the terrorists, Mr Khanzada said.

Appealing to the masses to help the law-enforcers in pre-empting the nefarious designs of the terrorists, he said there was an extraordinary do or die like situation prevailing in the country that called for extraordinary measures and the citizens should share the responsibility of maintaining peace.

The minister said all the banned

organization
s had been stopped from operating and lists of NGOs and seminaries working against national interests as well as the person delivering provocative speeches had also been prepared and action would be taken against them on solid evidence.

Urging landlords and proprietors of hostels and guest houses to provide details of the tenants or guests to police and take care while renting out their properties, he warned them that otherwise they could also face trouble.

New laws had been enacted and the existing ones were being amended to tighten noose around the snuffies and anti-state elements, he added.

Replying to a question about the religious schools involved in extremism, the minister said that action would be taken against terrorists, their financiers and controllers in the light of reports of secret agencies.

He told a questioner that availability of funds for the law-enforcers, whether civilians or army, had been ensured as the finance secretary had been issued directions in this respect.

He said that citizens were happy over the setting up of military courts which would soon start functioning.

Punjab police Inspector General Mushtaq Sukhera said the National Action Plan was being seriously implemented in the province and gave figures about the arrests made in a search-and-sweep operation, seized weapons and vehicles and registration of cases.

Police have registered cases against 650 people, recovered more than 8,000 weapons in the general holdup and impounded over 25,000 vehicles.

He said a number of foreigners were among those enjugged
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
, most of them from Afghanistan and they also included terrorists.

Law Secretary Syed Abul Hasan Najmi said the government had issued five ordinances and the laws regarding tenancy, security of sensitive places, illegal weapons, wall-chalking and loudspeakers had been amended and their violation had been declared non-bailable offense. Similarly, sentences and the amount of fine had also been increased, he added.

Two vehicles torched: Strike over clerics' killing observed
2013-02-10
[Dawn] Life in the city remained largely disturbed on Friday following a strike call given by nearly half a dozen Sunni organizations, including Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. (JUI-F) and Wafaqul Madaris Al-Arabia, with key commercial districts being closed, road traffic remaining thin and fuel stations in most parts of the metropolis shut amid early morning arson attacks and violence.

In an advance warning given to the government, leaders of different religious parties said if the killers of religious leaders were not jugged

within a week they would launch a second phase of their protest by staging sit-ins on main roads and at traffic intersections.

The strike call was supported by the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and also by the Shia Ulema Council that said they supported the call to show their resolve against every kind of terrorism in the city.

The city started returning to life in the evening after the parties gave the go-ahead to traders and transport bodies to resume their business. But road traffic remained thin in the evening as well due to the suspension of gas supply to CNG stations under a load-management programme of the Sui Southern Supply Company.

Most parts of the city remained peaceful during the strike though a couple of incidents of violence in the old city area and district west sowed fear among residents. In Kharadar, two vehicles were set on fire within a short span of time. An official at the central fire station said that a pick-up truck bearing registration number CL-4697 and a minibus (DE-066) were set on fire near Storied Baghdad

and on Mauripur Road where stones were hurled at moving vehicles.

An ASWJ front man termed the strike a 'success' and a "message of peaceful protest from Bloody Karachi

ites, where people from all walks of life, sects and segments of society have become insecure".

The traders' body, which supported the strike, claimed that business in most parts of the city remained closed.

The transporters, who also assured the parties of their 'cooperation' for the strike, said that buses were not run on most routes in the city. Some buses were operated in industrial areas, they added.

"We voluntarily agreed to their appeal after some respected holy mans approached us," said Ateeq Meer of the Bloody Karachi Tajir Ittehad -- a common platform of 350 wholesale and retail markets across the city. "The retail markets resumed their business in the evening as agreed with the parties but wholesale markets remained closed."

Sit-ins planned

Meanwhile,
...back at the wine tasting, Greasy Thumb grabbed his rod!...
addressing a joint conference, leaders of different religious parties warned the government that if the killers of religious leaders were not arrested within a week they would be compelled to launch a second phase of their protest by staging sit-ins on main roads and at traffic intersections.

The warning was given by chief of the Jamaatul Uloom Al-Islamia Binnori Town Sheikh-ul-Hadith Dr Abdul Razzaq Iskander, Jamaatul Uloom Education Director Maulana Imdadullah and JUI-F Bloody Karachi chief Qari Mohammad Usman. ASWJ leader Dr Mohammad Fayyaz was also present at the presser.

Expressing gratitude to all religious and political parties, organizations, transporters, traders and all sections of society for their 'cooperation' to make the Friday strike a success, they urged the chief justice of Pakistain to have mercy on seminaries and students by taking suo motu
...a legal term, from the Latin. Roughly translated it means I saw what you did, you bastard...
notice of the killing of Mufti Mohammad Abdul Majeed Deenpuri, his colleagues, other Ulema and students and attacks on mosques and seminaries.

While the scenes of gun attacks on Raees-ul-Ufta Maulana Deenpuri, Mufti Saleh Mohammad Karori and Ahsan Ali Shah on Jan 31 were recorded by surveillance cameras, none of the attackers had been arrested so far, they said.

They claimed that students and teachers of seminaries had always restricted themselves to the teachings and learning but now cut-throats had started targeting them as well.

Earlier, addressing a rally outside the Jamia Binnori town after Juma prayers, Small Traders' Organisation Bloody Karachi chapter president Mehmood Hamid had announced that if the killers of the Ulema were not arrested and given exemplary punishment, the small traders would observe a three-day strike and stand by Ulema for elimination of terrorism.

Maulana Mohammad Ghayas of the JUI and Qari Muhammad Iqbal also spoke.

Religious scholar among seven killed in city
2012-12-05
[Dawn] The early morning killing of a seminary teacher triggered violence in parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Monday, when six other persons — two coppers, a Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Metropolitan Corporation officer and his young nephew and two young friends — were also rubbed out.
Bring that up next time somebody tells you 'violence never accomplishes anything.'
At least five vehicles were torched and many others damaged in random arson and armed attacks in different parts of the city, bringing life in various localities to a standstill.

The hours-long violence on Rashid Minhas Road, University Road and adjoining arteries made law-enforcement personnel disappear from the strife-hit zone. The police backed by the Rangers reappeared after more than two hours, when much damage had been done.

“A little after 8am, when gunnies on a cycle of violence intercepted Maulana Mufti Muhammad Ismail near Jamia Majid Umar Farooq, off Abul Hasan Ispahani Road, when he was driving to Madrassah Ahsan-ul-Uloom,” said Inspector Azhar Iqbal, the SHO of the Sachal cop shoppe.

“He routinely dropped his children at a seminary in Scheme 33 and drove to work when targeted by armed riders. Hit in the head, chest and face, he was struck down in his prime. The police found five casings of spent 9mm bullets at the scene. The body was later moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.”

Within an hour of his killing, charged youths carrying sticks and bricks took to the main Rashid Minhas Road and blocked traffic on the road and later also on University Road.

Within the next half hour five vehicles, including an ambulance of a charity, were set on fire on Rashid Minhas Road, University Road and Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road.

Bricks, sewerage pipes and other heavy objects were placed on all main exit and entry points of Gulshan-e-Iqbal town — that houses several commercial facilities and educational institutions. The traffic mess stretched to Hasan Square and Water Pump.

Miscreants damaged with sticks several vehicles lining up at CNG stations on Rashid Minhas Road and University Road. The intensity of the violence turned low only after the body of Mufti Ismail was moved to Madrassah Ahsan-ul-Uloom, where his funeral prayers were offered after Zuhar.

A number of shops were attacked on Rashid Minhas Road, Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani Road and University Road where traffic signals were also smashed. With violence moving from one block to another, parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal and areas neighbouring Abul Hasan Ispahani Road reverberated with gunfire, causing immediate closure of shops and markets and compelling residents to stay indoors.

Associated with Madrassah Ahsan-ul-Uloom for the past 15 years as a senior faculty member, Mufti Ismail completed his education at the same seminary before moving to Al-Madinah International University for higher education.

Father of four, the slain holy man originally hailed from Pishin. Only last month, seven students of the same seminary were killed in an armed attack on a roadside teashop in Gulshan-e-Iqbal block 2.

Sindh IG Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari sought a report from the Bloody Karachi police chief on the killing of Mufti Ismail.

“The report should pertain to the overall security steps in the concerned zone and on the initial findings on a forensic basis,” said a statement issued by the central police office. “The IG directed that there should be a joint patrolling of police and Rangers in sensitive areas of the city. He also called for picketing and snap checks and keeping an eye on myrmidons. The IG directed that the security of Madaris, mosques and Imambargahs be beefed up.”

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
in separate armed attacks a police inspector, a special branch constable and a KMC officer and his young nephew were killed, and two bullet-riddled bodies stuffed in gunny bags were found.

In Orangi Town, Sector 11½, 42-year-old Mahmood Alam and his 26-year-old nephew Jaseem Siddiqui were killed in an ambush. The police said that Mr Alam, the KMC’s district officer who looked after the city’s graveyard affairs, was attacked when he was driving his official hi-roof vehicle (GS-9940) with his nephew.

“Both victims were residents of the same sector,” said Inspector Muhammad Sabir, the SHO of the Iqbal Market cop shoppe. “They were attacked near Sabri Chowk, a busy area. Witnesses said that gunnies after attacking the two in the van fired multiple shots into the air to scare people around and sped away.”

A police officer in Korangi met the same fate when he was driving to the police post where he was recently posted as its ‘in-charge’. Police said two masked men on a motorbike targeted 49-year-old Sub-Inspector Hidayatullah when he slowed down his car near Street 3 of Bilal Colony.

“He was hit by five bullets and was struck down in his prime,” said an official at the Korangi Industrial Area cop shoppe. “He was recently posted as officer-in-charge of the ‘R’ police post within the remit of the Korangi Industrial Area cop shoppe after being transferred from the Qayyumabad police post.”

The victim had been serving in the same Korangi town for the past 10 years at different cop shoppes and in different capacities. Hailing from Shikarpur, he was actively involved in recent arrests of some suspected killers and criminals in Korangi.

“The police meanwhile registered an FIR (1044/2012) under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code as well as Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act against unknown suspects on a complaint of the victim’s elder son,” added the official.

Earlier, bodies of two young friends were found stuffed in gunny bags in the Sohrab Goth area. The victims were later identified as Tayyab Chaudhry and Mahmood-ul-Hasan — both in their mid-20s — who were hit by six and eight bullets, respectively, fired from a very close range, the police said.

“Both were residents of Rajput Colony in Gulshan-e-Iqbal,” said Inspector Azhar Iqbal, the SHO of the Sachal cop shoppe. “There bodies were found at a truck stand near a storm drain passing under the Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Expressway bridge near the Sohrab Goth intersection. They had left home on Sunday afternoon to see some friends, but did not return.”

Targeted attacks continued after sunset as gunnies in Orangi Town rubbed out a special branch constable when he was waiting for a friend outside his home.

“Armed men entered one of the narrow streets of Frontier Colony and stopped close to Murad Khan,” said an official at the Pirabad cop shoppe. “Before he could comprehend the situation, one of the riders got off the motorbike, pulled out a .30-bore pistol and fired a single shot in his head from a very close range before running away with his accomplice.”

The victim was associated with the Sindh police’s special branch and posted at the Pirabad cop shoppe. Originally hailing from Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
