Former al-Qaeda commander and HTS associate launches new movement in Hadhramaut Valley
2025-04-16
[HodhodYemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
News] Abu Omar Riyad al-Nahdi, a former leader in al-Qaeda and a prominent associate of the head of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) in Iraq, has officially launched a new political movement called "Current of Change and Liberation" in the city of Seiyun, Hadhramaut Valley, well-informed sources reported.

The sources confirmed that al-Nahdi, who defected from the takfiri

’s departure from power.

The new movement has reportedly gained significant traction in the valley’s districts, coinciding with humanitarian activities carried out by the Ottoman Turkish Red Islamic Thingy (Hilal al-Ahmar al-Turki) in recent years, facilitated by leaders of al-Islah Party (Yemen’s Moslem Brüderbund affiliate).

Notably, al-Nahdi previously fought with al-Qaeda in Iraq before announcing his defection and undergoing political training, raising questions about his true objectives, regional affiliations, and activities under a political cover in Hadhramaut’s oil-rich areas. These regions are controlled by factions of the First Military District, which is loyal to Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a leading figure in al-Islah.

Observers view the announcement of this movement in Seiyun as a clear message from al-Islah to curb the ambitions of the UAE-backed Southern Translation Council (STC), which has failed since August 2022 to fully control Hadhramaut Valley after declaring "Operation Arrows of the East."

Saudi-led forces blocked the STC’s military advances after the factions seized al-Islah’s camps in Shabwa and Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...

Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual haj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start...
, carried out through local proxies such as the STC, the Hadhramaut Tribes Alliance, and al-Jami’, the latter two being headed by tribal sheikh Amr bin Habrish al-Ali, who is aligned with Saudi Arabia. His armed forces took control of the oil fields in July of last year and are now moving to encircle the coastal districts controlled by UAE-backed factions, including al-Rayyan Airport and the al-Dhaba oil terminal, which have been under Emirati control since 2016.

Alliance of pro-Russia and pro-Palestine hackers who despise western values hits UK army, navy and nuclear security office with cyberattacks
2025-04-08
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The British Army, Royal Navy, and the Office for Nuclear Security have been hit with cyberattacks by an alliance of pro-Russian and pro-Palestinian hackers, it has emerged.

The simultaneous attacks targeting the agencies' websites were carried out last month, hacker Mr Hamza claimed on the Holy League coalition's Telegram Channel.

'Our message is clear: this is just a warning … and worse is yet to come,' the pro-Palestine hacker, who is believed to be based in Morocco, posted.

The Holy League coalition is comprised of roughly 90 'hacktivist' groups that are unified by their despisal for western values and have vowed to 'wage cyberware' against Ukraine, Israel and their allies.

The coalition reportedly includes hackers trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and groups who work alongside Russian intelligence.

Britain has become a bigger target after having taken a more prominent leadership role in support of Ukrainian troops over the last months, analysts told The Times.

GCHQ recently issued a warning about the 'stark increase' in threats from state-aligned hacktivists looking to target Britain's critical infrastructure systems.

The majority of attacks are rudimentary distributed denial of service (DDoS) strikes that overwhelm a website or online server with traffic to make it inaccessible.

Experts note that DDoS attacks are relatively 'low impact', typically lasting just a few minutes, but can cause significant disruption to a website's services and interfere with its defences, making it easier to hack into the site.

The alliance is reportedly launching weekly cyberattacks against the UK's state agencies, armed forces, infrastructure operators, councils and security services, including the MI6 website which was allegedly targeted in March.

National Highways, the North East Combined Authority and several local councils were attacked by Holy League member NoName057(16) in January after Britain and Ukraine signed a 100-year partnership.

The alliance also launched a wave of attacks targeting the UK in December last year as retaliation for Ukraine's use of British Storm Shadow missiles, according to the Times.

The Holy League was created last summer by Abu Omar, a cybercriminal and leader of the Cyber Islamic Resistance.

In an interview with Kremlin-backed state media last November, Omar revealed that he works with partners from Russia, Belarus, Morocco, Egypt and Algeria, as well as with 'my brothers in the Middle East'.

He also claimed that the Cyber Islamic Resistance had been trained by an IRGC militia group in Iraq called the Badr Organisation.

Omar told the outlet that he wants the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza to 'end with the destruction of the 'Evil Empire', including Ukraine, Israel and NATO'.

The Holy League has claimed responsibility for several attacks targeting intelligence services across Europe. The group supports its claims by providing evidence from 'check host' links that demonstrates how long a site was down for.

Members of the Cyber Army of Russian Reborn (Carr), which is believed to working for the Russian military intelligence agency's cyberwarfare unit, are understood to be part of the Holy League.

Carr members Yuliya Pankratova and Denis Degtyarenko, both Russian nationals, were sanctioned by the US government in July 2024 after they allegedly hacked into water facilities in the US and Poland. The pair also allegedly disrupted operations at a facility in France.

Carr and a hacker known as NoName057(16), whom Ukrainian intelligence have identified as Pankratova's husband Artem, attacked the M6 toll road in Britain on December 6 last year.

A UK Government spokesperson said in a statement to The Times that it does not 'routinely comment on cyberactivity claimed by online groups'.

'The government is committed to using all of its levers to disrupt cyberthreats and to keep the public safe,' the statement added. MailOnline has approached authorities for comment.

CEASEFIRE OVER‐Israel Pounding Hamas Targets After Hostage Negotiations Fail
2025-03-18
[RedState] Israel's ceasefire with Hamas ended early Tuesday after repeated negotiations over Hamas releasing the remaining Israeli hostages failed once again.

Fighter jets began targeting terrorist strongholds in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces—and they also indicated they will increase their use of force if necessary:

The attacks mark the end of a nearly two-month-long ceasefire during which the terror group released hostages in drib drab fashion, often tormenting them and humiliating them in front of crazed mobs as they handed them over to the Red Cross. Released prisoners described the horrific conditions they lived under, from torture to starvation. Meanwhile, some like the Bibas family weren’t even alive at all—they’d been killed by the sadistic fanatics.

This is a rapidly developing situation, and RedState will you updated with the latest developments.

IDF carries out mass strikes in Gaza 'ending ceasefire’

[Jpost] The White House confirmed it was consulted by Israel prior to the strikes.

The IDF and the Shin Bet are currently conducting extensive strikes on Hamas terror targets in Gaza, the military confirmed early Tuesday morning, aiming to achieve the war goals "as determined by the political echelon, including the release of all our hostages — living and dead."

The IDF has been instructed to act "forcefully" against Hamas in the Gaza Strip by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the Prime Minister's Office announced.

"Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength," the PMO said.

“Tonight we returned to fighting in Gaza in light of Hamas’ refusal to release the kidnapped and threats to harm IDF soldiers and Israeli communities," Katz said in a statement.

"If Hamas does not release all the kidnapped, the gates of hell will open in Gaza, and Hamas’ murderers and rapists will meet the IDF with forces they have never known before. We will not stop fighting until all the kidnapped return home and all the war’s goals are achieved."

An Israeli official said the strikes targeted mid-level Hamas commanders, senior officials in Hamas’ political wing and Hamas’ infrastructure, according to Axios.

The White House confirmed it was consulted by Israel prior to the strikes.

“Hamas, the Houthis, all those who seek to terrorize not just Israel but also the United States of America, will see a price to pay. All hell will break loose,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News.

As a result of the strikes, the Home Front Command has updated its security guidelines, and school has been canceled in the Gaza envelope.

This marks the first significant wave of attacks since the January ceasefire began and comes amid additional reports of attacks by the US and Israel across the Middle East.

ISRAELI ATTACKS WITH US BACKING
US President Donald Trump has previously stated that Israel would have the full support of the US in all attacks against Hamas.

Trump also stated that “Hell will rain down” on both Hamas and the Houthis and that Iran should be held responsible "and face dire consequences" for Houthi attacks.

After fall of dynasty, tomb of Assad’s father set on fire in Syria hometown
2024-12-12
[IsraelTimes] Ordinary citizens wander through home of ousted president, loot luxury goods; Syrian refugees stream back home through Turkish border, hope for better life

The tomb of ousted Syrian president Bashir al-Assad’s father Hafez was torched in his hometown of Qardaha, AFP footage taken Wednesday showed, with rebel fighters in fatigues and young men watching it burn.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor told AFP the rebels had set fire to the mausoleum, located in the Latakia heartland of Assad’s Alawite community.

AFP footage showed parts of the mausoleum ablaze and damaged, with the tomb of Hafez torched and destroyed.

The vast elevated structure atop a hill has an intricate architectural design with several arches, its exterior embellished with ornamentation etched in stone.

It also houses the tombs of other Assad family members, including Bashar’s brother Bassel, who was being groomed to inherit power before he was killed in a road accident in 1994.

Hafez al-Assad, then-defense minister, seized power in Syria on November 13, 1970, in a bloodless coup. He was elected president in a vote asking citizens to either approve or reject his candidacy months later.

He consolidated power by bringing into key positions members of his Alawite sect, a minority in Sunni-majority Syria, and established a Soviet-style single-party police state with the help of omnipresent intelligence officers — the feared Mukhabarat.

Assad was particularly hated for a vicious crackdown on an armed uprising by the Moslem Brüderbund in the city of Hama in February 1982. Between 10,000 and 40,000 people died at the hands of the Syrian army.

On Sunday, a lightning offensive by Islamist-led rebels seized key cities before reaching Damascus and forcing his son Bashar to flee, ending more than 50 years of his family’s rule.

The end of Assad’s reign came 13 years after his crackdown on anti-government protests ignited Syria’s civil war, which has drawn in foreign powers, and jihadists and claimed more than half a million lives.

SYRIANS WONDER AROUND ASSAD’S HOME
Roaming the opulent Damascus home of the ousted Syrian president, Abu Omar said he felt a sense of giddy defiance being in the residence of the man he felt had long oppressed him.

"I am taking pictures because I am so happy to be here in the middle of his house," said the 44-year-old, showing photographs he took on his mobile phone.

He was among the dozens an AFP correspondent saw Sunday entering Assad’s home after Assad fled the country.

"I came for Dire Revenge. They oppressed us in incredible ways," Abu Omar added from the compound of three six-story buildings in the upscale al-Maliki neighborhood.

Jubilant men, women and kiddies wandered the home and its sprawling garden in a daze, the rooms stripped bare except for some furniture and a portrait of Assad discarded on the floor.

Residents in the Syrian capital were seen cheering in the streets, as the rebel factions heralded the departure of "tyrant" Assad.

’SALE! SALE!’
On Sunday, video circulating online showed crowds peeking into the bedrooms in the Assad residence, which was previously off-limits to ordinary citizens.

They could be seen snatching clothes, plates and whatever belongings they could find including a Louis Vuitton cardboard shopping bag.

In one video, a man could be heard yelling that everything was on "Sale! Sale!"

Umm Nader, 35, came with her husband from a nearby district to tour the residence that once inspired fear and awe, and which one visitor now described as a "museum."

"I came to see this place that we were banned from, because they wanted us to live in poverty and deprivation," she told AFP.

Nader said the former inhabitants of the residence had left without cutting off the heating and electricity, "meanwhile our children are getting sick from the cold."

Daily power outages that last for hours have been a fact of life in Syria, reeling from successive economic crises after more than a decade of war and Western sanctions.

Most of the population has been pushed into poverty, according to the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
An AFP correspondent also saw a charred reception hall at the Damascus presidential palace a couple of kilometers away.

As he moved from room to room, Abu Omar said he felt overjoyed.

"I no longer feel afraid. My only concern is that we unite (as Syrians) and build this country together," he said, full of emotion.

Syrians stream back home through Ottoman Turkish border

Syrians continued to flow back into the country after the longtime dictator had fled, speaking of their expectations for a better life following what was for many a decade of hardship in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
"We have no one here. We are going back to Latakia, where we have family," said Mustafa as he prepared to enter Syria with his wife and three sons at the Cilvegozu border gate in southern Turkey. Dozens more Syrians were waiting to cross.

Mustafa fled Syria in 2012, a year after the conflict there began, to escape conscription into Assad’s army. For years he did unregistered jobs in Turkey earning less than the minimum wage, he said.

"Now there’s a better Syria. God willing, we will have a better life there," he said, expressing confidence in the new leadership in Syria as he watched over the family’s belongings, clothes packed into sacks and a television set.

Turkey, which hosts three million Syrians, has extended the opening hours of the Cilvegozu border gate near the Syrian city of Aleppo seized by rebels at the end of November.

A second border gate was opened at nearby Yayladagi in Hatay on Tuesday.

Around 350-400 Syrians a day were already crossing back to rebel-held areas of Syria this year before the opposition rebellion began two weeks ago. The numbers have almost doubled since, Ankara says, anticipating a surge now Assad has gone.

Turkey has backed Syrian opposition forces for years but has said it had no involvement in the rebel offensive which succeeded at the weekend in unseating Assad.

Around 100 trucks were waiting to cross the border, carrying goods including dozens of used cars. Security forces helped manage the flow of people, while aid groups offered snacks to children and tea and soup to adults.

’OUR OWN PEOPLE’ ARE NOW IN CHARGE
Haya was waiting to enter Syria with her husband and three children. They have lived in a nearby container camp since devastating earthquakes in February 2023 killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

"We had good neighbors and good relations, but a container is not a home," Haya said as she comforted her six-month-old baby and her daughter translated her comments from Arabic.

"We are going back to Aleppo. Iman has a school here, but we have nothing else. We are going back home, to our family," Haya said, adding that her brother had been released after years in prison following Assad’s ouster.

Syria’s new interim prime minister has said he aimed to bring back millions of Syrian refugees, protect all citizens and provide basic services but acknowledged it would be difficult because the country, long under sanctions, lacks foreign currency.

Mustafa voiced confidence in the new leadership after Assad was ousted by rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
, a former al Qaeda affiliate that has since downplayed its jihadist roots.

"Those who have taken power are no strangers. They didn’t come from the United States or Russia. They are our own people. We know them," he said.

IDF releases more documents it says show cooperation between Hamas and Al Jazeera
2024-10-25
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Army says papers shows terror group coordinated with network on covering up failed rocket launches and in some cases instructed outlet not to criticize it on air

The IDF on Thursday published further documents captured in Gazoo

i network not to criticize it, and in which the sides coordinated on concealing incidents of failed rocket launches.

The release came a day after the army publicized documents uncovered in the Gaza Strip that it said showed that six active Al Jazeera news hounds are operatives in Paleostinian terror groups.

The IDF said the latest documents proved direct communication and cooperation between the Qatari network and Hamas.

According to the army, the first document, which was issued by Hamas in 2022, provided Al Jazeera with instructions on how to cover up a failed Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
rocket launch in Jabaliya, in which several non-combatants were killed.

The document instructed Al Jazeera not to use the word "massacre" to describe the incident, to display minimal images, and to ensure Hamas was not criticized in panel discussions on the channel.

In a second document, also from 2022, Hamas instructed journalist Tamer Almisshall to support the "resistance" in his coverage of Paleostinian Islamic Jihad during a 66-hour battle between Israel and the terror group, dubbed Operation Breaking Dawn.

The army said the document specifically instructed Al Jazeera not to criticize PIJ’s rocket capabilities or highlight its failed launches.

The military also released what it said was evidence of Hamas’s efforts in 2023 to establish a secure line between the terror group and the network for classified information and emergencies.

"The documents reveal how Hamas directs Al Jazeera’s media coverage to serve its own interests, preventing the public in Gaza and around the world from discovering the truth about its crimes against Gazook civilians," the IDF said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the army said it had uncovered documents in the Gaza Strip that showed six active Al Jazeera news hounds are operatives in the Hamas and Paleostinian Islamic Jihad terror groups.

The journalists were named by the IDF as Anas al-Sharif, Alaa Salameh, Hossam Shabat, Ashraf al-Sarraj, Ismail Abu Omar and Talal al-Arrouqi.

According to the IDF, al-Sharif has served as head of a rocket launching squad and a member of a Nukhba Force company in Hamas’s Nuseirat Battalion; Salameh as the deputy head of the Shaboura Battalion’s propaganda unit in Islamic Jihad; Shabat as a sniper in Hamas’s Beit Hanoun Battalion; al-Sarraj as a member of Islamic Jihad’s Bureij Battalion; Abu Omar as a training company commander in the East Khan Younis Battalion (and was maimed in an Israeli Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
several months ago); and al-Arrouqi as a team commander in Hamas’s Nuseirat Battalion.

"These documents are proof of the involvement of Hamas hard boyz in the Qatari media network, al-Jazeera," the IDF said.

It added that the named journalists are "spearheading" the spread of Hamas propaganda on Al Jazeera, especially in the northern Gaza Strip.

In a response, the network said it "views these fabricated accusations as a blatant attempt to silence the few remaining journalists in the region, thereby obscuring the harsh realities of the war from audiences worldwide."

The military released the documents it said showed personnel spreadsheets, lists of training courses, telephone books and salary documents.

It said the documents "unequivocally prove" that the journalists functioned as members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s respective military wings.

"These documents are proof of the involvement of Hamas forces of Evil in the Qatar

According to the station, "These baseless claims follow Al Jazeera’s recent exposé of potential war crimes committed by Israeli forces during the ongoing war on Gaza. These journalists have been steadfastly reporting from northern Gaza, with Al Jazeera being the sole international media presence documenting the unfolding humanitarian crisis resulting from Israel’s siege and bombardment of civilian populations."

In January, Israel said an Al Jazeera staff journalist and a freelancer killed in an airstrike in Gaza were terror operatives.

The following month, it accused another journalist with the channel, who was maimed in a separate strike, of being a deputy company commander with Hamas.

Al Jazeera has fiercely denied
No, no! Certainly not!
Israel’s allegations and accused it of systematically targeting Al Jazeera employees in the Gaza Strip.

In April, the government passed an emergency law to take the network off the air and block its broadcasts for violating national security. Courts have upheld the legislation, citing confidential information.

In June, a court found that there is a direct and causal connection between individuals who have carried out terror attacks inside Israel and the consumption of Al Jazeera content. It also determined that there was a "close connection" between Al Jazeera and Hamas, that some Al Jazeera news hounds in Gaza had turned themselves into "assistants and partners" with Hamas, and that some of them had even carried out terror attacks.

Last month, Israel’s Government Press Office announced that it was revoking the press cards of Al Jazeera journalists working in Israel.

Though Israeli officials have long complained about Al Jazeera’s coverage, which they say is heavily influenced by Hamas and endangers IDF troops in Gaza, in the past they stopped short of taking action. Qatar bankrolled Paleostinian construction projects in the Gaza Strip prior to the war, which were seen by all sides as a means of staving off conflict.

2004: Novaya Gazeta Releases Details of Tank Shooting at School in Beslan
2024-09-07
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Sometimes the Russians are their own worst enemy.

[KavkazUzel] The crews of four tanks deployed to the school building in Beslan were ordered to fire on the building when hostages were inside, according to materials from interrogations of servicemen and hostages published by Novaya Gazeta.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote, on the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attack in Beslan, the cultural and patriotic center for the prevention of terrorism "Beslan School No. 1" was opened. The school grounds  had to be preserved, says Emma Tagaeva. The center will become international and is necessary to preserve the memory of the terrorist attack, says Atsamaz Misikov.

The project took three years to implement, and 206.1 million rubles were allocated for the creation of the center. Twenty years later, the authorities have still not given a concrete answer as to how terrorists managed to organize the 2004 seizure of a school in Beslan, which resulted in the deaths of more than three hundred people, North Ossetian journalists noted.

On September 1, 2004, militants took 1,128 hostages in the gymnasium of School No. 1 in Beslan. The operation to free them ended on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terrorist attack, 334 people were killed, including 186 children, and another 810 people were injured. The "Caucasian Knot" has prepared a report "Terrorist attack in Beslan (September 1-3, 2004)" and  a chronicle of the terrorist attack  and the events that followed.
The Beslan attack was a project of Shamil Basayev, head of the Chechen insurgency (which at that time called itself the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, renamed two years later as Al Qaeda’s Caucasus Emirate), financed by Abu Omar Al Seif, who was Al Qaeda’s man in Chechnya. It is said that the money he brought came from the Saudis, and that the jihadis involved in the attack on Beslan School Number One, some of whom were Arabs, were trained in al Qaeda camps.
On the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack in Beslan, Novaya Gazeta published materials from the criminal case that Russia submitted to the ECHR. In particular, journalist Elena Milashina's publication "Tanks in Beslan" states that FSB representatives gave orders to conscripts to shoot at the school from tanks.

As follows from the interrogation protocols of the Chief of Staff, Head of the UFSB of North Ossetia Valery Andreyev, the Chief of the FSB Special Operations Center, General Alexander Tikhonov, reported that on September 2 he asked the command of the 58th Army to provide tanks to the Alpha and Vympel special forces to conduct the operation to rescue the hostages. The Commander of the 58th Army, Viktor Sobol, who was also part of the operational headquarters, gave the order to bring tanks into Beslan.

At 18:00 on September 2, exactly one hour after the former President of Ingushetia, General Ruslan Aushev, led 26 hostages out of the school seized by terrorists and managed to convince the militants to continue negotiations and allow the bodies of the dead hostages to be taken away, tanks entered Beslan and stopped near a transformer substation next to a railroad crossing, three hundred meters from the school seized by terrorists.

The hostages stood in the windows and waved white rags

The first shot from the tank was fired on September 3 at 14:25 Moscow time. At the same time, conscript Dmitry Godovalov, who commanded tank #328, said that the tank crews, who were in their combat vehicles, could clearly see the hostages through the viewing slits and triplex on the windows of the canteen. "The hostages were standing in the windows and waving white rags," he said during interrogation.

"This cafeteria became a real trap for the hostages. The fact is that in the entire first school, only the cafeteria windows had bars installed. Moreover, the bars were installed not on the outside of the windows, as is usually the case, but on the inside of the building. This fact is clearly recorded in numerous photographs of the cafeteria destroyed during the assault, including such photos in the materials of the criminal case. These bars became the main obstacle for the operational combat groups "Alpha" and "Vympel" deployed from Kominterna Street, because they did not allow the special forces to get inside the school. The headquarters tried to develop a scenario for the assault with a minimum number of casualties among both the hostages and the special forces - General Tikhonov spoke about this at a meeting of the parliamentary commission, in addition, this point is reflected in the situational examination. The bars on the cafeteria windows could have become a determining factor in the decision to use tanks. Because the internal fastening of the bars did not allow them to be knocked down or torn out using heavy equipment," writes Milashina.

At 14.25, one of the tanks fired directly at the window of the canteen, where the terrorists had placed their hostages as a human shield. Yuri Savelyev, a member of the federal parliamentary commission, who analyzed in detail in his special opinion the use of tanks during the storming of the Beslan school, assumes that it was tank No. 325, since it had more powerful active armor than other tanks. The shell hit the school gatepost and flew into the assembly hall.

Only 14 years after the tragedy, in December 2018, the presidential envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District, Alexander Matovnikov, made the first official admission since the terrorist attack that the storming of the school had been planned from the very beginning, despite protests from local residents. The presidential envoy also confirmed that the school had been shelled from a tank.

More than 50 witnesses from among former hostages and city residents testified that tanks fired at the canteen between 15:00 and 16:00 (closer to 16:00) on September 3. It was at this time, at 15:10, that General Tikhonov gave the order to the Alpha and Vympel combat groups to directly storm the school. Until that time, the school, mainly the combat positions of the militants, was actively shelled with small arms and grenade launchers. Until 15:10 Moscow time on September 3, not a single special forces soldier was in the school building, the publication says.

The tank crews fired at the windows of the canteen, so the damage to the school's façade wall was minimal; the main damage to the walls, ceilings and floors from tank shells was recorded inside these rooms. At that time, dozens of hostages were able to escape from the gymnasium, which had been destroyed by the first explosions, either on their own or with the help of local residents. However, a significant number of hostages, at the request of the terrorists, moved from the gymnasium to the main part of the school (classrooms, canteen, kitchens) and to its southern wing, the article notes.

The author of the article also emphasized that the number of hostages killed directly in the cafeteria will most likely never be known.

"Immediately after the assault, all the bodies of the dead were taken out of the cafeteria. An autopsy of the bodies and the establishment of the real causes of death of the people killed in the school were not carried out. And in the criminal case and death certificates they wrote that all the hostages died as a result of explosions in the gym," claims Elena Milashina.

At this time, an attempt was made to tear off the bars from the dining room window by the crew of BTR-80 No. 834, commanded by the commander of the reconnaissance and airborne platoon of military unit 12356 Andrei Shuvarikov. However, the terrorists, using the hostages as cover, stopped this attempt with direct fire to kill.

Trying to carry out the order, Andrei Shuvarikov and Warrant Officer Sergei Ryabikhin were wounded, and the BTR was hit by terrorists with an under-barrel grenade launcher.

The investigation, despite the fact that the attempt was unsuccessful, supported the official version, stating that the servicemen of the crew of the armored personnel carrier #834, Shuvarikov and Ryabikhin, managed to hook a cable and tear off the bars on the windows. But this was denied in court by both the hostages and the only, according to the investigation, surviving terrorist Nurpasha Kulaev.

"When they fired from the tank, the bars [in the dining room] fell... The bars were inside. They did not shoot with the tank at the second floor. They shot at the bars. This is inside the first floor," he said.

The hostages who survived in the dining room said that the bars "flew off" as a result of the shelling. "I remember that there was a loud shot, and then the bars [flew off]. I determined by ear that these were shots from a tank, by the way the room shook when they shot. Before that, the militants also shot from machine guns and something else. Then the building shook, too, but not to such an extent," said hostage Zhanna Tsirikhova.

On September 4, during an inspection of the school, investigators actually found window bars inside the cafeteria. In addition, the same inspection recorded a large number of characteristic destructions of the interior walls, floors and ceiling of the cafeteria and adjoining utility rooms, which could not have occurred from the use of firearms and grenades, the publication says.

During the interrogation of the participants in the events in September 2004, a version about the grating, the cable and the APC emerged. The tankers in their testimony claim that only one tank, No. 325, fired seven shots, and that it was in the evening. This tank was commanded by Guram Abuladze.

The second wave of interrogations of the tankers took place in 2005, after the victims testified at the Kulaev trial that all the tanks had repeatedly fired at the canteen during the day, when the hostages were still there. The repeated interrogations of the tankers and servicemen of military unit 12356 almost word for word coincide with their first interrogations.

Only one phrase is added: "Tank No. 325 fired at the school when there were "no more living hostages" in it." The tank crews were interrogated for the third time in 2006. From these interrogations it follows directly that the commander of tank No. 325, Guram Abuladze, voluntarily changed his testimony between 2005 and 2006 and testified under the protocol that on September 3, 2004, he and other tank crews received orders from officers to fire at the canteen where the hostages were. But Guram Abuladze apparently refused to carry out this order, Milashina notes in the publication.

Ivan Bazhenov, a tank driver, said on May 18, 2006, that on the afternoon of September 3, "the Alpha special forces began preparing to storm the school."

According to him, he heard an order on the radio for one of the tanks not to get nervous and not to shoot. "No one fired from the tanks during the assault, at least I did not hear any shots. I did not hear anyone on the radio ordering Abuladze to shoot at the school, at least when I was in the tank, and when I got out of it, I could not hear the radio," he said.

Another conscript, Aleksandr Asharin, said on June 9, 2006, that he did not know that "Abuladze refused to carry out the order <...> to shoot at the school when there were hostages there." "I cannot explain why witnesses and victims claim that the tank fired during the daytime; maybe they got something mixed up," he said.

I know that there was an order to fire at the school during the day when there were hostages there.

This testimony proves that Abuladze told the investigation about the order from the officers to shoot at the school, the publication notes.

This was confirmed by Dmitry Godovalov, commander of tank No. 328. "I know that there was an order to fire at the school during the day, when there were hostages there. But we refused to fire at the school, since the hostages were standing in the windows and waving white rags," he said.

Sixteen years after the terrorist attack, the investigation admitted that tanks had indeed fired at the school during the assault - in 2020, VGTRK aired a film by Alexander Rogatkin about the tragedy in Beslan. The author of the film stated that "a tank was also used." "He fired blanks in order to “to make breaches in the walls for the passage of special forces, and with combat shells,” Rogatkin asserts.

Albert Khasanov, senior investigator for especially important cases of the Investigative Directorate for the North Caucasus Federal District, also spoke about this in the film.

"The T-72 tank had been used before, but it fired blanks. The combat use of the tank, that is, when it fired high-explosive fragmentation shells, was after 21:00," he said.

However, in the weapons reports available in the criminal case, all T-72s only have high-explosive fragmentation shells. According to Milashina, "the version about the "blanks" was created by the victims themselves, who saw the tanks shooting at the school, but they could not imagine that the tanks could shoot at hostages standing in the windows and waving white rags." At the same time, all the interrogated tank crews confirmed that there were no "blanks" in the ammunition of their tanks, the article says.

[GEO.TV] Al Jazeera correspondents have confirmed a series of strikes across Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...

The center of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, experienced artillery shelling, while Israeli warplanes conducted multiple raids on the southern neighborhoods of Gaza City.

The intensification of strikes raises concerns about the safety and well-being of the population in these areas, as tensions escalate in the region.

The channel said doctors were trying to stop the bleeding and save his left leg.
More from the Times of Israel:
Ismail Abu Omar, an Al Jazeera reporter who was wounded in an Israeli airstrike near southern Gaza’s Rafah yesterday, is also a Hamas commander, according to the IDF.

Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, says that Abu Omar, in addition to working for the Qatari-owned station, serves as a deputy company commander in Hamas’s East Khan Younis Battalion.

On the morning of October 7, Abu Omar infiltrated into Israel and filmed from inside Kibbutz Nir Oz during Hamas’s onslaught.

In the strike yesterday, Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmad Matar was also wounded.

The IDF earlier this week revealed that another Al Jazeera journalist is a Hamas commander, and last month, two Al Jazeera journalists killed in an Israeli airstrike in Rafah were later accused by the IDF of being members of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups.

[NPASyria] Russian warplanes renewed airstrikes on Tuesday, targeting a site belonging to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) in the countryside of Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria, injuring 15 individuals, including HTS militants.

Opposition military sources informed North Press that the Russian warplanes targeted the outskirts of the villages of Batenta and al-Sheikh Bahr, west of Idlib, using three airstrikes with powerful dual-explosive missiles.

The sources added that the airstrikes targeted HTS positions and the vicinity of the Beir al-Tayyib camp near the village of Batenta, resulting in the injury of 15 individuals, including eight militants and seven civilians, including women and children.

On the same day at morning, four individuals, including two children, were injured due to artillery and missile shelling by the Syrian government forces on villages and towns in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo in northwestern Syria.

HTS hands over foreign militants to Turkish Intelligence in Syria’s Idlib
Aug 22, 2023
[NPASyria] Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) handed over on Tuesday an Iraqi and another Iranian militants, to the Turkish Intelligence through Bab al-Hawa border crossing in northern Idlib Governorate, northwest Syria.

An exclusive source informed North Press that the HTS handed over the Iraqi leader Abu al-Laith al-Anbari, who has been detained in the city of Idlib since June 2022.

“They also handed over the Iranian militant Abu Ishaq al-Irani, who used to be a militant in al-Nusra Front, through Bab al-Hawa crossing,” the source added.

The source indicated that al-Anbari was a former leader in al-Qaeda and had defected from al-Nusra Front after internal conflicts. Meanwhile, the Iranian militant served as a military trainer for militants of a faction of al-Nusra Front.

It is worth noting that the General Security Service (GSS), affiliated with the HTS, has previously handed over dozens of foreign leaders affiliated with al-Qaeda and dozens of foreign fighters who joined factions present in northwestern Syria to the Turkish Intelligence through the Bab al-Hawa crossing.

HTS arrests senior leader in Syria’s Idlib
Aug 21, 2023
[NPASyria] On Monday, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) arrested a prominent leader in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria, on charges of involvement with Abu Maria al-Qahtani, a prominent leader within the HTS, in a coup plot against Abu Muhammad al-Julani, the HTS leader.

An exclusive source informed North Press that the HTS arrested Abu Muhammad al-Shahil who was responsible for the Eastern Bloc and his companion Abu Humam al-Deri in Dabitt neighborhood, in the city of Idlib.

This action is a strategic move by al-Julani to undermine the Eastern Bloc militants, who are seen as crucial supporters of al-Qahtani within the group.

The source added that Abu Musab al-Shahil, an official of the Eastern Bloc, demanded clarification from the HTS regarding the reason for the arrest.

The source revealed that the decision to carry out the arrest was influenced by recommendations from Abu Ahmad Hudud and Abdurrahim Atoun, both of whom hold high positions and are close associates of the HTS leader. Their concerns primarily revolved around anticipating the potential response from the Eastern Bloc following the arrest of al-Qahtani.

On August 17, the HTS imposed a house arrest on al-Qahtani.

The HTS has been experiencing internal divisions for over two months, with one faction supporting al-Qahtani and another supporting al-Julani. These divisions became evident during a recent security campaign that targeted numerous leaders and militants affiliated with the group, particularly within the GSS.

HTS executes senior leader in Syria’s Idlib on charges of “espionage”

[NPASyria] Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) executed on Saturday an Iraqi security leader close to Abu Maria al-Qahtani, head of General Security Service (GSS) ,after six months of detention in Idlib Governorate, northwest Syria, on charges of collaborating with forging intelligence.

An exclusive source told North Press that the HTS executed Abu Omar al-Iraqi who had been working for al-Qahtani since 2012.

The source further informed that the execution took place in Idlib Central Prison, western the governorate, after a trial attended by Muzher al-Waisi and Abdurrahim Atoun, members of Shura Council of the HTS and other officials.

Earlier yesterday, the GSS stormed eight houses of security militants close to al-Qahtani.

On August 17, the HTS imposed house arrest on al-Qahtani. The motivation behind this action was the confessions provided by numerous militants and leaders who had been arrested earlier that al-Qahtani had intentions to overthrow Abu Muhammad al-Julani, the HTS’s leader.

Furthermore, the HTS has been experiencing internal divisions for over two months, with one faction supporting al-Qahtani and another supporting al-Julani. These divisions became evident during a recent security campaign that targeted numerous leaders and militants affiliated with the group, particularly within the security apparatus led by al-Qahtani.

HTS arrests 5 militants in NW Syria
Aug 20, 2023
[NPASyria] Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) raided on Sunday al-Ghazawiyah crossing, which separates the Turkish-occupied city of Afrin, northwest Syria, and HTS-held areas in Idlib Governorate, northwest the country, and arrested five of its own militants and leaders.

The HTS arrested those responsible for inspection and security checks at the crossing, as well as some guards, on charges of facilitating the escape of wanted individuals.

A special source told North Press that the HTS arrested the officials in charge of inspection and security checks along with three guards of the crossing on charges of involvement in smuggling militants and security leaders affiliated with the group who are wanted in security cases.

The source further added that the detainees were transferred to one of the HTS’s prisons in the town of Sarmada in the northern countryside of Idlib.

The source indicated that the HTS continues its security campaign against its opponents, with the number of detainees reaching 390 individuals, including leaders.

Government forces-HTS mutual shelling in NW Syria causes casualties

ISIS leader confirmed dead - 4th Number 1 toes up, 5th Number 1 tees up
2023-08-04
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The group "Islamic State” confirmed the death of its leader Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Kurashi. This was announced on August 3 by a representative of the group, whose words are quoted by AFP.
Let’s see if the new guy lasts long enough to find the key to the executive washroom.
The representative of the terrorist organization claims that the leader of the group was killed during clashes with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group * (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in the Syrian province of Idlib.

When exactly it was liquidated is not reported. Abu Hafsan al-Hashimi al-Kurashi has been announced as the new leader of the group.

As IA Regnum reported , on April 30, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkish national intelligence had carried out an operation in Syria to eliminate the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation).

It was reported that the villa where al-Qureishi was located is located in the village of Miske, near the city of Jandaris in the Syrian province of Afrin. Al-Qureishi arrived in this two-story "luxury building" from Idlib, from where he controlled the group. According to the channel, he did not use mobile communications, and transmitted orders through couriers.

Turkish intelligence found the leader of IS in Syria a few months ago and tracked his movements, eventually obtaining reliable data on the whereabouts of the terrorist. The house was closely monitored, including from drones.

The detention of al-Qureishi was carried out on the evening of April 29, however, in response to the call to surrender, his guards opened fire on the participants in the special operation from both small arms and heavy weapons. A fight ensued that lasted about four hours.
The Times of Israel spells the name of the dead big turban as Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi (the 4th Number 1), and the new guy (the 5th Number 1) as Abi Hafsan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi
Rudaw spells the new guy’s name as Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, suggesting that Abi is a misspelling.
Shafaq News gives us another transliterated spelling, adding:
In a recorded audio message attributed to the spokesperson, disseminated on a Telegram channel affiliated with the organization on Thursday evening, al-Ansari revealed that al-Qurashi was killed in clashes with Turkish-backed factions in the Idlib countryside.

Additionally, he stated that Ankara-backed factions had apprehended the former ISIS spokesperson, Abu Omar al-Muhajir, along with several others from the organization.

Last April, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had announced the supposed death of the "presumed leader" of ISIS in Syria during an operation conducted by Turkish intelligence.

During a televised interview at the time, Erdogan stated, "I would like to share new information during this meeting... There has been a development in our fierce battle against terrorist organizations... Turkish intelligence has been tracking for a long time an individual known as the leader of ISIS, Abu al-Husayn al-Qurashi... This is the first time we are announcing this news... the news of the elimination of this individual during an operation conducted by Turkish intelligence in Syria... and we will continue our work in combating terrorist organizations without exception."

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief March 28, 2023
2023-03-28
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • SUICIDE BOMBER KILLS AT LEAST 6 NON-COMBATANTS IN BLAST NEAR THE FOREIGN MINISTRY – Taliban security forces personnel reportedly attempted to kill a suspected suicide bomber at a checkpoint near the Foreign Ministry building in Kabul. It was not immediately clear if the bomber detonated the device he was wearing or if the Taliban caused the blast when they fired on the individual. The blast occurred as Ministry personnel were leaving their offices for the day. At least 6 non-combatants were killed and 12 were injured (3 Taliban guards were among the injured). Police initially speculated the Foreign Ministry was the intended target, but this may be inaccurate. The bombing is considered the first terrorist incident of the Remadan fasting period. ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the attack on its Telegram attack.

  • FLOODING KILLS 9, INJURES 74 MORE – Flooding reported across over twenty provinces has resulted in at least 9 deaths so far and scores more are injured. At least a portion of the deaths occurred when houses collapsed as their foundations were swept away. An engineer in Herat speculated that the recent earthquake had likely destabilized many homes across the country and added to the risk posed by flooding. Estimates from the Ministry of Natural Disasters say that 1,800 houses have been destroyed and over 20,000 acres of cropland have been damaged. However, it is not clear if these figures include flooding from the Fall of 2022. The death toll is expected to rise as more reports come in.

  • TALIBAN CLAIMS IT HAS KILLED KEY ISIS-K LEADERS IN MAZAR-I-SHARIF OPERATIONS – In several statements released online and on social media, the Taliban claims to have eliminated Abu Omar Afridi (council member), Ustad Salman Tajikistani (bomb production chief), and Mawlawi Ziauddin (ISIS-K leader in Balkh Province). The men were reputedly killed in recent security operations in Mazar-i-Sharif. Several longtime Afghanistan analysts were quick to point out that Ziauddin was not a leader in the group. It is possible the Taliban have misidentified the individual or, may be holding him up as a leader to show the international community they are taking the fight against ISIS-K seriously. A new source reported to journalists that ISIS-K had suffered a schism among its leadership over the strategic direction the group should take in Afghanistan. While the low-level conflict has been a norm in the terrorist group, major factions have not been previously reported.

  • CENTRAL BANK DECERTIFIES ALL INDIVIDUAL CURRENCY EXCHANGE LICENSES – Considered to be the first major policy change since taking the reigns of the Central Bank, the move affects nearly 900 small currency exchanges. The bank announced it had undertaken the measure for transparency purposes. Some observers claim the move is probably a means of bringing the currency market under tighter Taliban control and is also a way to prohibit the exchange of Pakistan’s currency (long a goal of the Taliban). A disruption to small businesses is expected as currency exchanges were a popular method of ‘banking’ at local markets.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kabul: A suicide bomber triggered a device at a security checkpoint near the foreign ministry on Monday as workers were leaving their offices. Six non-combatants were killed and 12 people were treated fir injuries sustained in the attack, ISIS-K claimed credit for the attack.

NEXT 24 HOURS
FLOODING WILL CONTINUE ACROSS MUCH OF AFGHANISTAN – Additional rainfall, much of it in the mountains, continued on Monday and emergency planners continue to warn Afghans to delay travel and to conduct periodic ‘walk arounds’ of their homes and buildings to search for signs of potential weak points. Several roads have washed out and a few reports say vehicles have been carried away when attempting to ford swollen streams and rivers. Travel at this time is considered extremely hazardous and the rain/snow is expected to continue in parts of Afghanistan through a portion of Tuesday.

3 Key Daesh Members Killed: Intelligence Directorate
2023-03-28
[ToloNews] The General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) said on Twitter that three key members of ISIS were killed in operations by Islamic Emirate forces in PD 5,8 and 10 in Mazar-e-Sharif, the center of Balkh province.

Those killed included Zainuddin, ISIS's temporary head of Balkh and head of the judicial system, Abu Omar Afridi, a member of the ISIS Khorasan council, and Ustad Salman Tajikistani, who was in charge of military training and organizing mines.

The GDI said that previously in an operation of the Islamic Emirate’s forces in Faryab, all members of the group that organized the attack on Mohammad Dawood Muzamil, former governor of Balkh, were arrested.

According to GDI, the members of this group are Tajikistan nationals and were sent to Afghanistan for an attack.

"In three police districts, 5, 8 and 10, the recent information shows that their key leaders have been killed," said the Islamic Emirate’s front man, Zabiullah Mujahid.

The announcement of the interim government about the killing of ISIS fighters sparked a reaction from the former US special envoy for Afghanistan’s reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad.

Khalilzad said on Twitter that if confirmed, "this would be a significant blow to IS-K in Northern Afghanistan."

"The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
had committed in the Doha Agreement to fight IS-K. The removal of these ISIS leaders indicates that it is doing so," Khalilzad said.

Khalilzad urged the US and Taliban to increase engagement to complete implementation of the Doha Agreement "which serves Afghan and US interests."

"Whenever the operations take place, they consider it both in the interest of the US and Islamic Emirate. This provokes the ISIS fighters against the Islamic Emirate," said Salim Kakar, a political analyst.

Some sources said that internal conflict in ISIS has increased.

Political analysts said that the recent steps of the caretaker government against ISIS have weakened the group.

"ISIS has been suppressed. The Islamic Emirate took serious actions against it. It is not as much as the US over-played it," said Abdul Mateen Mohammad Khail, a military veteran.

"As the Taliban is engaged in undermining ISIS, this is a good step," said Asadullah Nadim, military veteran.

According to the interim government’s numbers, at least 70 operations have been conducted against ISIS all over Afghanistan within the last year.
