Bank apologises to Nigel Farage over account closure |
2023-07-23 |
In which the Dawn editorialist whines because a free-thinking English politician in the end is not quite treated like a bunch of convicted, jihad-supporting Moslem organizations by English banks. [Dawn] British politician and former Brexit party leader Nigel Farage on Thursday received an apology from a private bank over the closure of his account, but the entire episode left some raising questions about the silence and lack of support surrounding bank account closures linked to British Moslems. Mr Farage made headlines in the United Kingdom this week after Coutts, a private wealth management company catering to royals and the ultra rich, had shut his accounts with no explanation. It prompted Tory MPs and even the prime minister to criticise the move as "wrong".This week, the Brexit campaigner released documents obtained from the bank, which stated it was concerned about Mr Farage’s "xenophobic, chauvinistic and racist views" and believed maintaining his accounts posed a risk to the bank’s reputation. The Chief Executive of the Natwest Group, of which Coutts is a part, apologised for the "deeply inappropriate comments" made about Mr Farage in an internal report. NatWest Group plc is a British banking and insurance holding company, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. But the scandal has prompted some to draw parallels between Mr Farage’s bank account closure scandal to the close of scores of accounts linked to Moslem individuals and Moslem charities in the UK.Several news reports in the last decade covered how British NGOs such as the Finsbury Park mosque in north London, ![]() ...former pulpit of Abu Hamza al-Masri (Mustafa Kamel Mustafa to his mother, and possibly his wife), the one-eyed, hook-handed, Al Qaeda-linked preacher extradited to America to stand trial for everything evil except mopery and dopery on the spaceways. He makes his home in the Florence, Colorado supermax prison now, which must be an illuminating experience... international development charity the Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) ...also called the Amanat Charity Trust. Opened in 2001, it’s based in the UK but operates schools and masjids in sixteen countries of the Ummah ... and the Cordoba Foundation thinktank ...an Islamist pressure group that offered a platform to the international jihad feeder group Hizb ut-Tahrir... had their HSBC bank accounts closed because banks said their accounts fell "outside of our risk appetite". Though Moslems called this out at Islamophobia![]() at the time, the bank denied the accusations and defended its decisions. Writing for Middle Eastern Eye, prominent British journalist and broadcaster Peter Oborne compared Mr Farage’s banking conundrum with that of British Moslems, saying "Welcome to the world of British Moslems." He drew attention to the articles he had written about the closing down of Moslem charities accounts, and how little space they got in newspapers as compared to Mr Farage’s case. "Contrast the Westminster reaction when a Moslem loses her or his account — total lack of any interest, let alone concern, but when Farage supposedly loses his, Fleet Street has an attack of the vapours." He continued, "I can’t help comparing the alacrity with which the government has gone into battle on behalf of Farage to its total indifference to the fate of British Moslems and others over many years. This shows two things: first and foremost, the structural Islamophobia which has long poisoned British media and politics. When Moslems have their bank accounts closed, nobody cares. When the same thing allegedly happens to Nigel Farage it’s close to a national scandal." Not everyone agrees with the comparison. Wasiq Wasiq, an academic and counter-terrorism commentator, told Dawn. "’The closure of Nigel Farage’s bank account, based on his political views, sets a dangerous precedent — that if your views do not align with those of the organization, then you are not welcome to bank with us. This can have an impact on not only prominent political figures, but also the general public. "However, a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth... the closure of accounts is something banks are entitled to do. Nearly a decade ago, it was widely reported by the BBC, Guardian and the Independent that HSBC closed the bank accounts of prominent Moslems and Islamic NGOs. At the time, the accusation levied against HSBC was that the decision was based on ’Islamophobia’. But the decision to close the accounts was because they fell ’outside of our risk appetite’. "It is important to note, because of the regions these organizations were working in, they were vulnerable to exploitation by money launderers and forces of Evil seeking to use them for financing purposes. This risk is not the same as the potential risk of Nigel Farage having an account with Coutts. To conflate the two, makes a mockery of when banks act in a way that could affect the average Brit, as opposed to organizations being vulnerable to exploitation by money launderers and terrorists." UK banks are free to deny services to customers for a number of reasons, including suspicions over financial crime. Banks can also choose to close or refuse an account if they believe customers pose a risk to their reputation — one of the key reasons Coutts cited for shutting Nigel Farage’s account. Mr Farage has had the support and sympathy of several key people in government who criticised Coutts and asked for an explanation, with some ministers saying a new law could be drawn up to prevent banks closing accounts of people because of their political views. UK: Gang of 16 knife wielders single-out white victims in Londonistan
2019-10-02 | ||
The six victims, reportedly the ’biggest athletes’ from the sports academy, were walking home through the park last Monday at around 8:00 pm when they discovered they were being pursued by a group of 16 males, the Islington Gazette reports. "They were being tailed by one of them on a bike. Then there were 16 of them. They circled them and picked one off to the side and said: ’Give me your phone or I will stab you ‐ put in your Apple Pay password," Adrian Klemens, a coach of the Dynamic Sports Academy recalled. "Out of our group three were white and three were black and they said to the black guys: ’You’re good,’ and just attacked the white guys," Klemens continued.
Thanks to his athleticism and his nerve, the victim grabbed his phone and made a mad dash out of the situation. The two other white victims in the group ‐ aged 17 and 22 ‐ weren’t so lucky and had their phones stolen.

Mentally ill British man pleads guilty to US terrorism charges |
2015-03-31 |
[Ynet] A mentally ill British man pleaded guilty on Monday to US terrorism charges and conspiring with radical London holy man Abu Hamza al-Masri to set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon in 1999. Haroon Aswat, 40, entered his plea in Manhattan federal court as part of an agreement with government prosecutors. Defense lawyer Peter Quijano had disclosed the outline of the deal in the court earlier this month, saying it would resolve the case ahead of a June 1 trial date. Under questioning from US District Judge Katherine Forrest before pleading guilty, the soft-spoken Aswat said he had suffered from symptoms of schizophrenia for the last 20 years and was currently being treated for the disorder. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2008 while being held at a high-security psychiatric hospital in England, according to court documents. |

Abu Hamza lost hands in Pakistan army experiment |
2014-05-09 |
[DAWN] British hate preacher Abu Hamza told his US terror trial Thursday that his hands were blown off during a Pakistain army explosives experiment in Lahore in 1993. The device was prepared by an Arab with the same name as an expert alleged to have taught al Qaeda recruits in Afghanistan in 2000-01. Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, 56, better known in Britannia as Abu Hamza al-Masri has pleaded not guilty "Wudn't me." in New York to 11 kidnapping and terror counts that pre-date 9/11. He is charged over the 1998 kidnapping in Yemen of 16 Westerners, conspiracy to set up a jihad training camp in Oregon in 1999, of providing material support to al Qaeda, of assisting the Taliban and of sending recruits for terror training in Afghanistan. Work in Pakistain Taking the stand in his defense for a second day, he told the court he moved with his family to Pakistain in 1992 to do reconstruction work in war-torn Afghanistan. After Saudi funders pulled the plug on multi-million-dollar projects, he said he helped Arab veterans of the 1980s Afghan jihad against the Soviet Union find jobs with the Pakistain army. Those with army tactics and explosives experience were wanted "to help with the army in other areas of conflict," Abu Hamza testified. In 1993 he said he was designing a steel plate with a Pak engineer as part of a wider, unidentified project for which "others were designing explosives." He said he introduced the army to "some Arabs," including an Egyptian married to a Pak woman. This Arab had the same name, Abu Khabab, as the man whom British al Qaeda recruit Saajid Badat said taught explosives at a jihad training camp in Afghanistan in 1999-2001. The work took place in army issued accommodations in the city of Lahore, close to the Indian border, he said. "I was very surprised," Abu Hamza said, describing how explosives were tested on empty land between two villas outside on the street. "I was surprised why the neighbors were not complaining or calling the police. They were all army families," he said. Pakistain army asked him to keep quiet The Arab man was lax with "health and safety," he said, and prepared a small container of explosives which "Commander Ilyas" put in a detonator before leaving. Abu Hamza said he picked up the device, which was getting hot, but couldn't throw it in the bathroom as previously advised because someone was at the sink. He said he "felt the kaboom" and saw blood before falling into a coma. He was taken to a military hospital in Lahore, where he spent a month. Abu Hamza later flew to London to be fitted with a prosthetic before returning to Pakistain to collect his children six months later in early 1994, he told the court. He said the army offered not to round up any more Arab former mujahideen in exchange for his silence. "The army said look we're not going to make any more arrests, just don't embarrass us about what happened," the preacher said. He described his hospital treatment in Pakistain as "the very best" and that doctors in England "were very impressed about how my stumps were done and healed." Previous reports said that he lost his arms in Afghanistan, but Abu Hamza said "all sorts of stories" had circulated about the reason for his injuries. The preacher got a laugh from the court when he said one of the stories had been that his hands were cut off in Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... when he was caught stealing. He later became emotional when asked about the 1995 massacre of Bosnian Moslems in Srebrenica, forcing Judge Katherine Forrest to call a seven-minute break. He also testified to changing his name legally on his British passport in order to travel to Bosnia in the mid-1990s to provide cars and money to Moslem fighters. Abu Hamza made another joke, saying it was as easy as paying 25 pounds ($42 in today's money) and giving your name as John Travolta, to further laughs. He faces life in prison in a maximum security US prison if convicted by jury at the New York court. |

Hook Hand Trial: Carloads Of Terrorists Turned Oregon Ranch Into Training Camp |
2014-04-24 |
[NYPost] An Oregon woman says she thought she was opening up her family's ranch to local Moslems to teach them how to grow and can veggies -- and that her husband was even expecting a tax write-off. But US-born Moslem convert Eva Hatley testified in Manhattan federal court Tuesday that after the "carloads'' of fellow Moslems she met through her mosque arrived at the 160-acre ranch in Bly in 1999, the couple watched helplessly as their home was turned into an al Qaeda training camp. "It wasn't anything like I envisioned for the property," insisted Hatley, testifying at the trial of one-eyed, hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza al-Masri. Hatley, a two-time witness-protection-program flunky who prefers going by her Moslem name, Ayat Hakimah, said other Moslems from London would soon arrive on al-Masri's orders. According to al-Masri's lawyer last week, the camp was similar to being in the "Cub Scouts,'' with the men riding horses, tending to little lambs and telling campfire stories. But Hatley said one of the arrivals, hard boy Oussama Kassir, boasted about previously running training camps in Afghanistan and being a "hit man" for the late Osama bin Laden ... who is now beyond all cares and woe... "He said he was there to train men for jihad," she said. "He said that Abu Hamza sent him. He intended to train them to fight." She added that some had CDs with information on how to make poisons to "kill people" and regularly "talked" about "robbing and killing truck drivers" on nearby roads. Kassir, she recalled, claimed there were plans to eventually dig a hillside compound at the ranch for al-Masri to hide out in. Besides setting up the training camp, al-Masri, 56, is accused of conspiring in a 1998 kidnapping in Yemen that resulted in the deaths of four tourists and committing other terror crimes. He faces life in prison if convicted. Kassir, a Lebanese-born Swede, was convicted in 2009 of plotting to help al Qaeda recruit by trying to set up a weapons training post at the ranch and distributing terrorist training manuals over the Internet. |

US trial begins for Abu Hamza |
2014-04-15 |
[Al Ahram] Jury selection began on Monday in the trial of radical Islamic holy man Abu Hamza al-Masri, accused of conspiring in a 1998 kidnapping in Yemen that resulted in the deaths of four tourists. Abu Hamza also is accused of trying to set up a jihadist training camp in Bly, Oregon, and of raising money to send bully boyz to train in Afghanistan. The 55-year-old imam, who is using his birth name, Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, during the trial, faces life in prison if convicted of the most serious charges against him. Prior to Monday, more than 200 prospective jurors filled out questionnaires that asked, among other things, whether they felt they could be impartial in a case involving terrorism-related charges. On Friday, US District Judge Katherine Forrest struck 45 potential jurors whom both prosecutors and defense lawyers agreed should be dismissed based on their answers, as well as an additional 41 jurors she decided should be excused. US prosecutors are trying to secure their second high-profile terrorism conviction in a matter of weeks, after a jury found the late Osama bin Laden ... who is now beyond all cares and woe... 's son-in-law Suleiman Abu Ghaith guilty last month. Unlike in several other terrorism-related trials, including that of Abu Ghaith, the jury will not be anonymous. Abu Hamza, who has said he is innocent, has indicated he plans to testify in his own defense. A fiery ...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob... orator, Abu Hamza was extradited from Britannia in 2012 after spending several years in jail on charges of inciting his followers to kill non-believers. The Egyptian-born preacher delivered speeches and led prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque in north London. While there, according to British officials, he had contacts with several high-profile myrmidons, including Briton Richard Reid, who unsuccessfully tried to blow up a Miami-bound airplane with a bomb hidden in his shoe in 2001, and Zacarias Moussaoui, who helped plan the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people. Abu Hamza is missing one eye and both hands and is known for using a prosthetic metal hook. He has said he suffered the injuries while doing humanitarian work in Afghanistan in the 1980s, though authorities say they occurred while he fought with the mujahideen against the Soviet Union. |

Handless cleric awaiting terror trial in New York gets prosthetics
2013-03-16 | |
The jail holding Abu Hamza al-Masri, the handless Islamic cleric awaiting trial on U.S. terrorism charges, provided him with a new set of prosthetics on Friday, officials said at a hearing on Friday. His attorneys had been asking for the new limbs for months, after authorities refused to allow him to wear his usual metal hooks outside of his jail cell.
Al-Masri is being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center next door to the courthouse in lower Manhattan. The Egyptian-born, white-haired preacher appeared in court on Friday without any prosthetics. In another accommodation, al-Masri, who is also missing an eye, will have access to a laptop computer to review evidence in his cell, Forrest said Friday. Forrest said the accommodation is being made in part because much of the evidence is in Arabic. Al-Masri will have access to the computer at all times except for when it is charging, Lewis said after the hearing. It does not have Internet access, she said. Al-Masri will also be able to speak with his family by telephone on March 18, Forrest said. Lewis said after the hearing that he is only allowed to speak to his immediate family. Although pleased with the accommodations, Lewis told Forrest that al-Masri still had other needs, including a change of sheets more often. After the hearing, Lewis explained he needs a daily change of bedding because of a medical condition. Most inmates at the MCC get clean sheets once a week, she said. Al-Masri, who has asked to be referred to in court by his birth name, Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, has pleaded not guilty to 11 criminal charges. His trial was recently pushed back to March 31, 2014, at the request of his attorneys, who cited voluminous evidence they need to sort through.

Shabaab threatens Britain over extradition of Abu Hamza al Masri |
2012-10-24 |
Yesterday the Somali terror group Shabaab threatened to attack Britain for extraditing radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al Masri, who arrived in the US on Oct. 5 after being held for nine years in a British prison. The al Qaeda affiliate also pledged "to go to every possible length" to free the Blind Sheikh, another convicted terrorist, who is serving a life sentence in the US for murdering US citizens. Shabaab threatened Britain and pledged to work to free the Blind Sheikh, in a series of 11 tweets on its Twitter account, HSM Press Office (@HSMPress, or Harakat al Shabaab al Mujahideen Press Office). "The nightmare that surreptitiously looms on British shores is bound to eclipse the horrors of 7/7 and 21/7 combined," one tweet said, referring to the July 7, 2005 coordinated suicide attacks in London, and the July 21, 2005 failed bombings at London train stations. Shabaab warned that the British government's "actions will be repaid in retaliatory measure" and said that "Britain will pay the heftiest price for its brazen role in the war against Islam and endless brutality against innocent Muslims." In another tweet, Shabaab said it "pledges to go to every possible length to attain the freedom of imprisoned Muslim scholars, starting with Sh. Omar Abdirahman," or Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who is better known as the Blind Sheikh. The group then urged Muslims in the West "to hasten towards the release of their Muslim brothers & sisters," and specifically called on "the Muslims in the United States to make their stand." |
