2 PPP leaders arrested in Badin as Mirza escapes alleged attack |
2015-11-11 |
![]() Rangers raided a local PPP camp office and arrested Atta Hussain Jamali, a district council from UC Mir Ghulam Mohammad Khan Talpur and his nephew Khan Sahib Jamali, who is the PPP candidate from Ward Numner 3 of Tando Bago town in Badin district. Three armed party activists were also taken into custody from the camp office. Earlier in the day, the caravan of former Sindh home minister and disgruntled PPP leader Dr Zulifiqar Mirza came under fire on Dei-Tando Bago road. Dr Mirza escaped the gun attack unhurt but later during a press conference blamed PPP leaders including MNA Kamal Khan, Haji Sain Bux Jamali and others for the attack. Dr Mirza alleged that the PPP leadership wanted bloodshed during the local body elections in the district. “They think I am a coward who would run away. Tell them, I will never stop fighting against the corrupt,” said Mirza. Dr Fehmida Mirza, Zulfiqar Mirza's wife and former NA speaker, talking to local media demanded a thorough probe into the incident and held SSP Badin Ibrar Hussain Nekokar responsible for the mess in the district. On the other hand, Haji Sain Bux Jamali, while talking to Dawn.com, said armed supporters of Dr Mirza opened straight fire on his supporters at his farmhouse near his village Sono Khan Jamali. He claimed that after the incident some of his supporters staged a demonstration to register their protest against the attack. |

The Zulfiqar Mirza saga |
2015-05-27 |
![]() ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... took reprisal to a new low. Over the past several months, Zulfiqar Mirza has been at the centre of an exciting soap running on every TV channel enthralling audiences. His harangue against his old buddy was sure to get high ratings. The sight of him vandalising a cop shoppe and heavily armed guards patrolling his farm in Badin made the former Sindh home minister a big attraction in this country's theatre of the absurd. Unsurprisingly, his allegations against Asif Ali Zardari, his former leader and friend, have generated intense controversy. Yet, what happened on the court premises was utterly shameful and the use of masked police commandos was surely unlawful. They appeared to be more like a private militia than law enforcers. The way they fled with the appearance on the scene of the Rangers raises several questions about their real identity. Once arguably the most powerful man in the Sindh government, Mirza is now under the protection of federal agencies. He is facing more than a dozen cases under anti-terrorism laws. The chief minister has even threatened to send his case to the military court that has been formed to try hardcore terrorists. It was surely not Mirza's rowdy behaviour at a cop shoppe in Badin that provoked such an extreme response from the provincial administration that is hardly known for its competence or love for the rule of law. It shows clearly that it hurts more when an insider spills the beans. What started as a bitter personal feud between two estranged friends has now taken an ugly political turn. Mirza is angry with Zardari for reportedly taking away two sugar mills that the former president had bestowed on him. He is also unhappy over the betrayal by his party of Uzair Baloch and his Lyari ...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot.... 'peace committee', a criminal gang that the former home minister had armed and patronised. |

Uzair Baloch caught in Dubai |
2014-12-30 |
[DAWN] Uzair Baloch, an alleged leader of one of the gangs operating in crime-infested Lyari, was arrested in Dubai by the Interpol on Monday while he was crossing into the United Arab Emirates from Oman by road, police authorities here confirmed. Television channels broke the news regarding arrest of Uzair Baloch during the first half of the day, but with sketchy details and unconfirmed reports. Later, in the evening police officials seconded the arrest report, citing family sources of the alleged gang leader. But they added that they were still in touch with the federal government and the authorities concerned for custody of Baloch. “We have reports that he has been arrested by Interpol,” DIG south Barrister Abdul Khaliq Sheikh told Dawn. “Although we have not received any confirmation from any official forum, his [Uzair Baloch’s] family has confirmed his arrest in Dubai. We are pursuing the issue with the interior ministry and FIA for further process and his custody.” Once known for his loyalty to the Pakistan Peoples and close contacts with the party’s leaders and senior members in the Sindh cabinet, eg former home minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, Uzair Baloch took over as leader of Peoples Amn Committee in Aug 2009 when the notorious Abdul Rahman Baloch alias Rahman Dakait was killed in an encounter more than a year after the PPP government came to power. Though the committee is presented as community group by its leaders, it is blamed for its criminal activities which included killings, extortion and drugs business both by police and rival parties of the PPP. His relations with the PPP started souring after April 2012 when the police launched ‘Lyari operation’. The two-week siege came to an end without any major arrest, but left a number of people, including policemen, dead. |
