Imran Khan backs call to make Pakistan ''hard state'' |
2025-04-10 |
[GEO.TV] Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said on Wednesday that incarcerated party founder Imran Khan backed calls for making Pakistan a "hard state", stressing the importance of ensuring equal justice for all citizens. Speaking to Geo News, Gohar quoted Imran as saying that a "hard state" would guarantee the rule of law and uniform implementation of justice. "Imran said Pakistan should not remain a soft state, where the law is not consistently upheld," he added. The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, who has been behind bars since August 2023 after he was booked in multiple cases from corruption to terrorism, apparently backed the statement made by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir. Last month, the army chief blamed the "soft state" image for the loss of innocent lives amid rising terror activities, asking for how long they [armed forces] will fill the "gaps of governance" with martyrs' blood. "We need better governance... we should make Pakistan a hard state," he said while addressing a high-level in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, which was skipped by major opposition parties, including the former ruling party. The in-camera session came against the backdrop of rising terrorism in Pakistan, including a major terrorist attack on a passenger train in the Mushqaf area of the Bolan district in Balochistan. Dozens of militants, affiliated with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), blew up a railway track and assaulted the Jaffar Express on Tuesday, carrying more than 440 passengers — who were taken hostage. The security forces, after a complex clearance operation, neutralised 33 attackers and rescued the hostage passengers. Addressing the crucial session, COAS Munir asserted that no agenda, movement, or individual is greater than national security. "If this country exists, so do we; therefore, nothing is more important to us than its security," he added. "All elements of national power must operate in unison to achieve lasting stability," he emphasised, declaring that it is a fight for the nation's survival and the future of generations to come. |

Scotland Yard ''arrests'' PTI supporter over TikTok threats to PM Shehbaz, Sharif family |
2025-01-19 |
[GEO.TV] Scotland Yard has reportedly arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporter Gulfam Hussain Kayani for threatening to harm Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former premier Nawaz Sharif and other members of the Sharif family — live on TikTok. In one of the recent TikTok broadcasts, Kayani has also threatened to blow up the Avenfield apartments. While speaking to his TikTok followers, he threatened that he will practically "drag" members of the Sharif family on London streets and that he will "avenge" PTI founder Imran Khan if he is harmed in Pakistan. Kayani has also criticised Pakistan's military leadership. Scotland Yard sources confirmed the arrest. It's understood that Kayani's arrest warrants were issued around a week ago. He was arrested late on Friday night at the gates of the Avenfield apartments, soon after Khan's conviction in 190 million case. At that time, Kayani was live on TikTok and interacting with his followers. |

Islamabad locked down ahead of protests seeking ex-PM Imran Khan's release |
2024-11-24 |
![]() Highways leading to Islamabad through which supporters of Khan, led by members of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, are expected to approach the city and gather near the parliament, have been blocked. Most major roads of the city have also been blocked by the government with shipping containers and large contingents of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in riot gear, while mobile phone services have been suspended. Gatherings of any sort have been banned under legal provisions, the Islamabad police said in a statement. Global internet watchdog NetBlocks said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that live metrics showed WhatsApp messaging services had been restricted ahead of the protests. A key Khan aid, Ali Amin Gandapur, who is the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and is expected to lead the largest convoy into Islamabad, called on people to gather near the entrance of the city’s red zone, known as "D Chowk". Islamabad’s red zone houses the country’s parliament building, important government installations, as well as embassies and foreign institutions’ offices. "Khan has called on us to remain there till all our demands are met," he said in a video message on Saturday. The PTI’s demands include the release of all its leaders, including Khan, as well as the resignation of the current government due to what it says was a rigged election this year. Khan has been in jail since August last year and, since being voted out of power by parliament in 2022, faces a number of charges ranging from corruption to instigation of violence. He and his party deny all the charges. |

Imran Khan was ousted on Gen Bajwa's directives: Fazlur Rehman |
2024-02-16 |
[GEO.TV] Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Emir Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Thursday that the no-confidence motion that ousted former prime minister Imran Khan was tabled on the directives of ex-army chief General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa. In an interview on a private news channel, Fazl, who was the chief of the multi-party alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) responsible for removing Khan, said: “I was personally against the no-confidence move [...] but if I had said no despite insistence of other parties, then an impression would’ve been given that I ‘saved’ the PTI founder.” The PDM removed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in April 2022 and led by Shehbaz Sharif, the multi-party alliance ruled the country for 16 months before handing over the reins to the caretaker set-up. At first, Khan insisted that the US had him removed — a claim that the Joe Biden administration vehemently rejected. However, the ex-prime minister later shifted the blame to Gen Bajwa. In an interview in February last year, Khan, citing an apparent conversation of the retired general with a journalist, said General Bajwa had “accepted and clarified that he was behind our government's ouster”. After he became the first prime minister to be ousted via a no-trust motion, Khan continued a tirade against the establishment; however, politicians also said that the ex-army chief was involved in the PTI’s ouster. Fazl, during the interview, said: “While the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was running the movement for a no-confidence motion, Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid told me that I could do whatever I wanted, but within the system.” The JUI-F chief said Hamid told him that he could not “do anything outside the system” — meaning that every move should be made inside the parliament, not on the streets. “But I rejected his directions,” he said, but noted that later on, the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and others left the PTI-led government. “When they said that [the anti-PTI] is now in majority, I had to agree with them otherwise it would’ve been said that I helped save Imran Khan,” the JUI-F chief, who has rejected February 8 election results, said. GOVERNMENT FORMATION The February 8 did not return a clear majority for anyone, but independent candidates backed by Khan won 92 out of 264 seats, making them the largest group, followed by PML-N (79) and the PPP (54). However, every party, even the PML-N which is seemingly about to form the next government, is unhappy with the election results. For his party, Fazl has decided to join the parliament, but not become part of the government. “The decisions will not be made in the parliament anymore, they will be made on the streets.” He noted that apparently, “rigging in elections” benefited the PML-N and there’s a rumour that Nawaz was not winning the Lahore seat. Fazl said that PML-N’s prime minister candidate Shehbaz had paid him a visit to speak about government formation, but he rejected the idea and instead called on the Nawaz-led party to join him in the opposition. “But Shehbaz left without responding to my offer [...] for me, the parliament has lost its credibility. If the establishment this that the elections were fair, then the May 9 narrative has been buried.” Related: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam: 2024-01-07 'TTP on agenda' as Fazl gears up for visit to Afghanistan Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam: 2024-01-06 Sunni Ulema Council's Maulana Masoodur Rehman Usmani gunned down in Islamabad Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam: 2023-11-22 PML-N, JUI-F hit back at Bilawal as electioneering picks up pace Related: Fazlur Rehman: 2024-02-14 Former PDM leadership wants to see PTI part of 'reconciliation' Fazlur Rehman: 2024-02-13 Disappointing electoral performance prompts resignations of JI's Haq, IPP's Tareen Fazlur Rehman: 2024-02-10 PM hopeful Nawaz Sharif seeks unity govt after 'election triumph' Related: Imran Khan: 2024-02-13 Why Nawaz Sharif failed to win Pakistan election despite tacit army support Imran Khan: 2024-02-13 NA-57 candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Adnan gunned down in Rawalpindi Imran Khan: 2024-02-13 PML-N not luring independent candidates to join party, says Khawaja Asif Related: Qamar Javed Bajwa: 2023-05-21 In audio leak, Imran Khan pleads with US lawmaker to intervene amid crackdown on PTI Qamar Javed Bajwa: 2023-04-29 Ex-COAS Bajwa's statement on combat worthiness against India misquoted: ISPR Qamar Javed Bajwa: 2023-04-26 ‘Taliban consulted Gen Bajwa before reaching out to India’ Related: Pakistan Democratic Movement: 2024-02-13 Why Nawaz Sharif failed to win Pakistan election despite tacit army support Pakistan Democratic Movement: 2023-05-15 Daily Evacuation Brief May 15, 2023 Pakistan Democratic Movement: 2007-09-06 Nawaz says he's in contact with Saudis Related: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2024-02-13 Disappointing electoral performance prompts resignations of JI's Haq, IPP's Tareen Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2024-02-12 PTI looks towards COAS Gen Munir for leaders' release, mandate acceptance Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2024-02-11 Vote counting in Pakistan hit by unexpected delays after millions cast their ballot in controversial general election Related: Shehbaz Sharif: 2024-02-14 Former PDM leadership wants to see PTI part of 'reconciliation' Shehbaz Sharif: 2024-02-13 Why Nawaz Sharif failed to win Pakistan election despite tacit army support Shehbaz Sharif: 2024-02-13 Minus-PPP govt won't last more than six months: Faisal Vawda Related: Pakistan Peoples Party: 2023-12-12 JI announces no-trust motion against PPP's Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Pakistan Peoples Party: 2023-11-22 PML-N, JUI-F hit back at Bilawal as electioneering picks up pace Pakistan Peoples Party: 2023-08-28 Nawaz Sharif has no plan to return to Pakistan soon: Khursheed Shah Related: Faiz Hamid: 2023-12-14 Nawaz denies plotting against ex-army and spy chiefs, seeks action against 'conspirators' Faiz Hamid: 2023-03-09 Ex-ISI chief being investigated for corruption: Sanaullah Faiz Hamid: 2022-07-24 Military huddle discusses ‘peace talks’ with TTP Related: Balochistan Awami Party: 2019-03-09 Balochistan ATC refuses bail to BAP lawmaker accused of abducting tribal leader Balochistan Awami Party: 2018-07-23 Mastung bomber studied in Karachi seminary Balochistan Awami Party: 2018-07-21 Alleged facilitator of Mastung blast killed in FC operation in Kalat district |

PTI looks towards COAS Gen Munir for leaders' release, mandate acceptance |
2024-02-12 |
[GEO.TV] Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) top leader Barrister Gohar Khan Sunday demanded the release of the party's "political prisoners," including founder Imran Khan, in reaction to Chief of the Army Staff General Asim Munir's "healing touch" statement on general elections. Congratulating the nation over the conduct of the February 8 polls, the army chief, on Saturday, said the nation needed stable hands and a healing touch to move on from the politics of anarchy and polarisation. Gen Munir had said that Pakistan’s diverse polity and pluralism would be well-represented by a unified government of all democratic forces imbibed with national purpose. According to the military's media wing, the COAS had said the nation needs stable hands and a healing touch to move on from the politics of anarchy and polarisation, which does not suit a progressive country of 250 million people. “Elections are not a zero-sum competition of winning and losing but an exercise to determine the mandate of the people.” Responding to Gen Munir's statement, Barrister Gohar said "healing touch" means there should be no political prisoners in the country. This comment by the politician, who also represents Khan in his legal battles, came during an interview with Arab News, setting the tone for the party's future moves as its candidates lead in the polls. "[PTI] mandate has to be respected. Short of it there can be no healing touch.” Gohar, while responding to the COAS's "unified government" stance, added that it does not necessarily mean a coalition government. "United government means that every party should be united in one thing, which is that you have to respect and regard people’s mandate first,” he said. The politician, who won the general elections from the NA-10 constituency, added: "The people have spoken [through the vote] and for the first time they have spoken in a very tough situation [amid a crackdown against PTI]." In the interview, the PTI chairman said that 95 out of the 102 total independent candidates were backed by the party and remained its loyalists. The PTI will also contest the results in "at least 50 seats" where it considers the results have been manipulated. The lawyer-cum-politician maintained his party is "near victory in Punjab" and has "two-thirds majority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa". "We are actually close to the final figure in the Centre. We would be hopefully forming the government in the Center, as well as Punjab and the KP," he added. Gohar, like several other politicians, also complained about the delay in the release of results by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), even two days after the end of the polling process. "We are giving time to the Election Commission [of Pakistan] to announce all the results by 12 [am] tonight [Sunday],” he warned. "If they do not, then we are going to hold a peaceful protest in front of the RO [Returning Officer] offices in all those areas where elections [results] have not been announced or elections [results] have been withheld," Gohar added, Stating that the nation has decided in favour of the PTI, the politician also hinted at the possible release of the party's founder in the coming days. "I think we will go to the high court, these convictions [against Khan] would be set aside and he will be out soon," said Gohar. Vote counting in Pakistan hit by unexpected delays after millions cast their ballot in controversial general election |
2024-02-11 |
[CNN] Vote counting in Pakistan’s general election has been hit by unexpected delays after millions cast their ballot in a race in which old dynasties are vying for power while the country’s widely popular former leader languishes behind bars. There had been no final result as of early Friday evening, more than 24 hours after polls closed. Pakistan’s Election Commission on Friday said it had given “instructions to ensure immediate declaration of results.” With 156 out of the 266 contested seats counted, independent candidates were in the lead with 62 seats. The majority of the independents are affiliated with the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The much-anticipated vote, already delayed for months, comes as the country of 220 million faces mounting challenges – from economic uncertainty and frequent militant attacks, to climate catastrophes that are putting its most vulnerable at risk. Police in Pakistan’s capital announced a ban on gatherings as vote counting continued. Islamabad police imposed Section 144 in the city, which prohibits gatherings of more than four people. “Legal action will be taken in case of any disturbance,” the police force wrote in a post on X on Friday. Khan’s party earlier accused authorities of delaying results in an attempt to rig the vote, accusations they have denied. “This is the second half of counting & the point when manipulation takes place,” Khan’s PTI said in a statement Thursday, adding it was “clearly leading” in 114 constituencies across the country. Pakistan’s National Assembly consists of 336 seats, of which 266 are decided through direct voting on polling day. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan described the “lack of transparency” surrounding the delay in announcing the election results as “deeply concerning.” |

ECP moved against Shah Mahmood Qureshi's 'unlawful abduction' |
2023-12-28 |
[GEO.TV] A petition was filed in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the “unlawful abduction” of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood WormtongueQureshi ![]() , who was re-arrested just minutes after coming out on bail. The senior politician was taken into custody earlier in the day by Rawalpindi police from Adiala jail in connection with a case related to May 9 violent protests, a day after being detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (3-MPO) following approval of his bail in the cipher case last week. In response to the former foreign minister's arrest, his daughter demanded the electoral body to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities and ensure the safety and release of Qureshi, who is a candidate standing the upcoming elections from multiple constituencies of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies of Punjab and Sindh. Meherbano stated in the petition that Qureshi had been granted bail by the Supreme Court, and referred to the remark of Justice Athar Minallah, who stated: “The incarceration of the petitioners will not serve any useful purpose. Moreover, their release on bail during the period of elections would ensure ‘genuine elections and thus enable the people to exercise the right to express their will effectively and meaningfully.” Related: Shah Mahmood Qureshi: 2023-08-26 Nawaz to return to Pakistan in October, confirms Shehbaz after London meeting Shah Mahmood Qureshi: 2023-08-20 Good Morning Shah Mahmood Qureshi: 2023-06-25 Policeman martyred as woman suicide bomber blows herself up in Turbat Related: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2023-11-22 Pak Purge: IHC nullifies August 29 notification for Imran Khan's jail trial in cipher case Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2023-10-11 Meet the Harvard Students Supporting Hamas' Invasion of Israel Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf: 2023-05-19 Eight 'terrorists' fleeing from Zaman Park arrested: Punjab govt Related: Adiala jail: 2023-12-21 Pindi police rebut reports of firing at Judge Mohammad Bashir's car Adiala jail: 2023-12-06 Lawyers try stop export of F-35 parts from Netherlands to Israel Adiala jail: 2023-11-30 IHC acquits Nawaz Sharif in Avenfield reference Related: Athar Minallah: 2023-12-23 Apparently PTI's allegations regarding level-playing field are correct: Justice Minallah Athar Minallah: 2023-12-23 SC grants bail to Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi in cipher case Athar Minallah: 2023-05-12 Supreme Court declares Imran Khan's arrest 'illegal', orders him to appear before IHC tomorrow |

Pak Purge: IHC nullifies August 29 notification for Imran Khan's jail trial in cipher case |
2023-11-22 |
![]() A special court has been conducting the trial in jail citing security concerns since Khan was indicted on the charges last month. The PTI chairman is currently in Adiala jail after he was indicted by the special court on October 23. "Islamabad High Court has declared illegal the notification for jail trial," said Naeem Panjutha, the lawyer, in a post on social media platform X. The ruling came as a division bench comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Saman Riffat Imtiaz announced the verdict it reserved earlier in the day on the intra-court appeal filed by the PTI chief against his jail trial. It seems like, after the order, the court proceedings that have taken place in jail have been nullified as a whole. Allowing Khan's intra-court appeal, the division bench declared the law ministry's notification "to be without lawful authority and no legal effect". The IHC stated in the three-page short order that the jail trial can be conducted in "exceptional circumstances". "In exceptional circumstances and where it is conducive to justice, a trial can be conducted in jail in a manner that fulfills the requirements of an open trial or a trial in camera provided it is in accordance with the procedure provided by law." The court also declared that the November 15 notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice after the caretaker cabinet's approval of the jail trial "cannot be given retrospective effect". ![]() “We, the undersigned student organizations, hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence,” the letter read. “The apartheid regime is the only one to blame. Israeli violence has structured every aspect of Palestinian existence for 75 years.” To date, the Hamas invasion has killed over 900 Israeli citizens, and at least 11 American citizens. Reports of Hamas raping Israeli women, and videos of militants holding Israeli children in cages, have flooded social media. In one violent spectacle, Hamas militants paraded the naked, dead body of a German woman through the streets of Gaza in the back of a vehicle. In some cases, Hamas terrorists even uploaded images or videos of their victims on the victims’ own social media accounts. Despite such horrific brutality, the Harvard student groups offered Hamas their public support and blamed Israel for the murder and rape of its own citizens.
