[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday that they had thwarted two separate Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) attacks targeting military checkpoints in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah provinces. The SDF also warned of an uptick in holy warrior activity aimed at destabilizing the region. "Our forces thwarted two separate ISIS attacks targeting our military checkpoints in the eastern Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah countrysides," the SDF said in a statement. Regarding the incident in Hasakah, the SDF reported that the attack occurred when one of their fighters stopped a "suspicious civilian vehicle" at a checkpoint. The vehicle was found to be carrying weapons and ammunition. Shortly afterward, two ISIS bully boyz on a cycle of violence launched an attack on the checkpoint. The SDF repelled the attack, which resulted in material damage but no casualties. In the Deir ez-Zor countryside, an SDF patrol came under fire from an "ISIS cell" while conducting a routine security operation. "Our forces responded effectively to the attack," the SDF stated, adding that "the losses inflicted on the Lions of Islam remain unknown." The SDF reported only minor material damage and confirmed that there were no casualties among their ranks. The SDF has been warning for months about a resurgence in ISIS activity targeting both their forces and civilians, particularly in oil-rich areas like Deir ez-Zor, which remains partially under their control. |

(ISIS) cells carried out an attack on their forces in eastern Syria, killing a fighter and injuring another. The "treacherous" attack targeted one of SDF’s checkpoints in Hajeen district of the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, according to a statement from the SDF. The oil-rich Deir ez-Zor is partially controlled by the SDF and has seen an escalation in ISIS activity. "These repeated terrorist attacks underscore the difficult challenges our forces face and reaffirm the critical importance of our mission to eliminate terrorism at its roots and uphold security and stability throughout the region," read the statement. The SDF, the de facto army of northeast Syria (Rojava), has reported several ISIS attacks in Deir ez-Zor. It has also captured several ISIS suspects. ISIS has also been active in parts of Deir ez-Zor controlled by Damascus. Syrian state media reported on Sunday that a suspected ISIS attack on a cop shoppe in Deir ez-Zor’s Mayadeen city. Three killed in car bomb blast targeting police station in east Syria |
2025-05-20 |
[Rudaw] Three people were killed and several others injured in a blast caused by an explosive-rigged vehicle in the Deir ez-Zor countryside of eastern Syria on Sunday, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). In a statement on X, SANA quoted a "security source" stating that "three deaders have fallen and several others were maimed in the initial toll of the earth-shattering kaboom that targeted a cop shoppe in the city of Mayadeen," located 45 kilometers southeast of Deir ez-Zor. The agency later confirmed that the three fatalities were coppers. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) shared footage of the deadly blast, adding that the earth-shattering kaboom occurred outside a prison in Mayadeen. Importantly, the deadly incident occurred just hours after the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that the Syrian General Security and General Intelligence directorates had launched a "joint security operation" targeting a "hideout of an Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) terrorist cell" in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo, northern Syria. The ministry reported that one Damascus-affiliated security officer was killed during the operation, along with three members of the terrorist cell. Four additional cell members were arrested for their involvement in "carrying out terrorist activities, including direct attacks on General Security personnel." The Syrian interior ministry further noted that "weapons, kabooms, and boom jackets" were seized from the suspects, reinforcing its "commitment to combating criminal cells" and emphasizing that it would "not hesitate to protect the security and stability of the country and confront anyone who attempts to disrupt it." In a separate development, Syria's Defense Minister, Murhaf Abu Qasra, confirmed on Saturday that all armed units had been integrated into his ministry to unify the country’s armed forces. He issued a ten-day ultimatum to "remaining small military groups" to complete the unification and organizational efforts, warning that any delay in compliance would be dealt with under the law. Abu Qasra further explained that the push to consolidate all armed units under a single institutional structure began shortly after the fall of Syrian dictator Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Lord of the Baath... in early December, when a coalition of opposition groups, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ![]() (HTS), overthrew Assad. On Saturday as well, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported capturing suspected members of an ISIS cell in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province. "Based on precise intelligence, our forces raided the location where members of the terrorist cell were hiding in the town of al-Busayrah and successfully captured them," read a statement from the SDF. The operation was carried out with the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). "The captured holy warriors were planning to carry out attacks targeting our military and security forces, as well as civilians and public institutions in the area," the SDF statement added. ISIS, which was territorially defeated in 2019, has recently attempted to regain ground, taking advantage of the prevalent instability in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime. On Friday, the SDF announced that they had captured 10 ISIS suspects in Deir ez-Zor after one of their fighters was killed and three others injured in an ISIS attack. According to the UK-based war monitor, SOHR, there have been 84 operations carried out by ISIS cells in northeast Syria (Rojava) since the beginning of 2025, including armed attacks, assassinations, and bombings. Syria gives armed groups 10 days to integrate into defense ministry
2025-05-18 | |
A reminder: Y’all have been conquered. That means your only option is to surrender, so please get in with it. NOW. [Rudaw] Syria’s defense minister announced on Saturday that all armed units have been integrated into the Ministry of Defense, unifying the country’s armed forces, though he gave "remaining small military groups" a ten-day deadline to complete the process."Today, we convey to our honorable people the news of the integration of all units into the Syrian Ministry of Defense," Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said in a post on X. He said that the process to unify all the armed units under a single institutional structure began immediately following the end of the former regime. "Given the importance of institutional work, we stress the need for the remaining small military groups to join the ministry within a maximum period of 10 days from the date of this announcement, in order to complete the efforts of unification and organization," he added, warning that any delay complying would be dealt with under the law. In December, the rebel coalition, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ![]() (HTS) that led the final offensive to oust Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Light of the Alawites... , agreed to merge into the Syrian defense ministry. The Syrian Democratic forces (SDF), which control the northeast, signed an agreement with Damascus on March 10, to integrate "all civil and military institutions in northeast Syria [Rojava] under the administration of the Syrian state, including border crossings, the [Qamishli International] Airport, and oil and gas fields." Despite this deal, Kurds in Rojava are concerned about key decisions the new authorities in Damascus have made to centralize authority. The Damascus leadership in late April censured SDF's call for federalism, saying it contradicts their agreement.
The new administration also dissolved all armed factions including Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the lightning offensive that toppled Assad in December. Factions that agreed to dissolve were integrated into the defense ministry, and General Security, the country’s new police, opened the door to recruits as part of both institutions’ efforts to create a new army and security force. Factions from Daraa in the south, as well as ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... -backed factions in the north and Islamist groups also joined the ministry’s forces. These factions have retained their weapons and remain deployed in their areas of operation. But HTS and Islamist groups aligned with it remain dominant, especially in their original stronghold in Idlib in the northwest and in Damascus. Syria’s new authorities face major challenges preventing them from asserting control over all of the war-torn country, including the presence of gangs with varying loyalties. The main challenge for Abu Qasra, who as a rebel commander led the offensive that overthrew Assad, is building a new national army.

(ISIS) from camps in northeast Syria (Rojava), during a meeting with the mission’s head in Iraq on Wednesday. The message, delivered by UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) chief Mohammed al-Hassan, "commended Iraq’s recent accelerated efforts in repatriating Iraqi nationals from al-Hol and Roj camps and detention facilities in Syria," said a statement from Sudani’s office. Guterres assured Sudani that the UN will continue cooperation with authorities in Baghdad on the matter "to ensure the safe return and reintegration of Iraqi citizens," according to the statement. Roj and al-Hol camps, both located in Rojava’s Hasaka province, house tens of thousands of individuals, mainly Iraqis and Syrians, with ties to ISIS. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which control the area, have warned of the continued threat of radicalization within the camps. "The message stressed the importance of allocating sufficient resources to support rehabilitation, reintegration, and accountability in line with international laws and standards," the statement added. Iraq has repatriated around half of its citizens in batches, placing them in rehabilitation programs prior to reintegration. The repatriation of ISIS affiliates has long been a contentious issue in Iraq, given the heinous human rights ...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedomat the convenience of the state... violations and war crimes the group committed following its 2014 seizure of large swaths of territory in Iraq’s north and west. While some tribes and communities have expressed willingness to integrate individuals linked to the group, others argue that reintegration should be limited to families of ISIS members, particularly those who were not directly involved in severe crimes. ISIS captured vast swathes of northern and central Iraq in 2014, but the group’s so-called caliphate was dismantled in 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces, with support from a US-led international coalition, retook the territory. |

Turkey says its anti-PKK operations continue in both Iraq and Syria despite progress in peace process |
2025-05-17 |
[Rudaw] The Ottoman Turkish defense ministry announced on Thursday that its cross-border operations against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) continue. The statement comes just days after the Kurdish group declared its decision to dissolve itself and disarm, expressing hope that Ankara would take concrete steps to advance the emerging grinding of the peace processor. In a Thursday briefing, the Ottoman Turkish defense ministry’s Spokesperson Zeki Akturk stated that the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) are continuing to take "intensive and effective measures" against the PKK at ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... ’s borders with the Kurdistan Region and northeast Syria (Rojava). Akturk noted that "within the scope of the ongoing Operation Claw-Lock," Ottoman Turkish forces have recently seized "a large number of weapons, ammunition and living materials from the caves" belonging to the PKK, rendering them unusable. He also reported that one PKK member "surrendered" during the week, highlighting what he called "the effectiveness of the ongoing search and screening activities" in the region. Operation Claw-Lock was launched by Turkey on April 18, 2022 with the goal of targeting PKK positions in the Metina, Zap, Avashin, and Basyan areas in northern Duhok province along the Ottoman Turkish border. In Syria, Ottoman Turkish forces have destroyed extensive underground infrastructure used by the PKK and the People’s Protection Forces (YPG), Akturk said, elaborating that "since January 8, approximately 99 kilometers of tunnels in the Tal Rifaat region and 112 kilometers in the Manbij region have been destroyed." The YPG is the backbone of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — de facto army of Rojava. Founded in 1978, the PKK initially sought an independent Kurdish state but later shifted its focus toward securing broader political and cultural rights for Kurds in Turkey. The group announced on Monday that it would disband and end its decades-long armed conflict with the Ottoman Turkish state, calling it a step toward a peaceful resolution. The group reported intense bombardment by Turkey while they were holding their much-anticipated congress. Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ![]() stated on Wednesday that Turkey’s intelligence services will closely monitor the PKK to ensure the group follows through on its pledge to dissolve and disarm. Erdogan described the PKK’s decision as indicative that "we have entered a new phase in our efforts for a terror-free Turkey." "The era of terror, guns, violence, and illegality has now come to an end," he stressed. For his part, Akturk, stated in his Thursday briefing that the PKK’s decision "should be implemented without wasting time," warning, "We are careful and prepared against any situation that could sabotage the process, including verbal and action-based provocations." Akturk concluded, "Land search and scanning operations, detection and destruction of caves, shelters, mines and homemade explosives... will continue with determination until it is ensured that the area is cleared and will no longer pose a threat to our country." Syrian militants continue abuses in north Syria despite integration: HRW |
2025-05-15 |
[Rudaw] Syrian National Army (SNA) Death Eaters continue to detain and extort civilians in northern Syria despite a decline in arrests in recent months, a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report said on Wednesday, warning that commanders complicit in serious human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... abuses are now being integrated into Syria’s official military structure. "These fighters are being integrated into Syria’s Armed Forces, with their commanders appointed to key government and military positions, despite their past involvement in serious abuses," HRW said, calling on the transitional government in Damascus to "end and investigate ongoing abused and exclude those with records of abuse from the Syrian security forces." The report cited Syrian for Truth and Justice (STJ) - a local human rights organization - which last month documented dozens of arrests by SNA factions in January and February. Despite the removal of most SNA checkpoints in the vicinity of the Kurdish city of Afrin in northern Syria, "hundreds remain detained in SNA-run, Ottoman Turkish-supervised prisons." The watchdog also cited a December attack by fighters from the SNA’s notorious Suleiman Shah Brigade, who allegedly took control of a village in Aleppo province, beat residents, stole personal belongings, and arrested seven men "under the pretext of searching for weapons." Two of the men "remained in detention" as of early May, according to the HRW. It also referred to earlier reports that detail "abductions, arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, including of children, sexual violence, and torture by the various factions of the SNA, the Military Police, a force established to curb such abuses, and members of the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces and Ottoman Turkish intelligence agencies." "The primary targets were Kurds and those linked to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Turkiye considers part of the armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party [PKK], which announced its dissolution on May 12," HRW said. "Turkiye, which still oversees former SNA factions and continues to provide weapons, salaries, training, and logistical support to these factions, also bears responsibility for their abuses and potential war crimes," it added. In 2018, ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire... and its allied Syrian militias seized control of Afrin, a Kurdish enclave in Rojava. Thousands of Kurds fled, with many settling in the nearby Shahba region. International organizations have recorded widespread violations in Afrin since then, including killings, kidnappings, looting of crops, and extortion of Kurdish farmers. In December, the Islamist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ![]() (HTS) launched a blistering offensive from their stronghold of Idlib in northwest Syria and marched on Damascus, overthrowing Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Lord of the Baath... ’s regime. HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa set up a transitional government and appointed himself as interim president. But Syria’s new authorities have faced backlash, particularly from the Kurds, for appointing militia leaders complicit in serious human rights abuses, including Ahmad al-Hayes, better known as Abu Hatem Shaqra, the former leader of the SNA’s Ahrar al-Sharqiya, and Mohammad Hussein al-Jassim (Abu Amsha), the notorious commander of the Suleiman Shah Brigade. In 2021, the US sanctioned Hayes, accusing him of serious human rights violations, including trafficking Yazidi women and kiddies, and connections with the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. (ISIS). He is also accused by Syrian Kurds of killing popular Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf during Turkey’s 2019 military offensive against the Kurdish-led SDF in northern Syria. Washington has also sanctioned Abu Amsha for "serious human rights abuses" in the Afrin region and for ordering his Death Eaters to "forcibly displace Kurdish residents and seize their property" in northern Syria. "The fall of Assad’s abusive government has meant decades of atrocities by that government have come to an end," said Adam Coogle, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "But Syrian National Army factions are continuing to detain, extort, and torture residents with impunity." Notably, Damascus has also faced criticism over a deadly crackdown in the Alawite-majority coastal areas, where at least 1,500 people, mostly civilians, were killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In late April, over 100 were also killed in southern Syria’s Druze-majority areas after sectarian violence erupted ![]() Sharaa met with locals in Afrin in February and pledged to remove gangs and end abuses. In March, he signed a landmark agreement with SDF chief Mazloum Abdi to integrate the SDF into Syria’s state institutions, declare a nationwide ceasefire, and facilitate the return of displaced Syrians under government protection. The deal resulted in a prisoner swap and a joint security arrangement in Kurdish-majority neighborhoods north of Aleppo previously held by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) - the SDF’s backbone. Ahmed Hassan, head of Afrin’s council of the Kurdish National Council (ENKS), told Rudaw in March that the number of Kurds returning to Afrin has significantly increased since the deal, with some Arab settlers reportedly leaving the city. However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... Nadine Maenza, president of the International Religious Freedom (IRF) Secretariat and former chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), told Rudaw in April that many displaced Kurds and Yazidis are still afraid to return due to militia presence. "The Syrian transitional government should urgently unify its military under an accountable command with civilian oversight and ensure adherence to international human rights standards. It should take steps to prevent further abuses against Kurdish and other residents in northern Syria, ensure the release of all arbitrarily detained people, and investigate past abuses with fair legal proceedings," HRW said, also calling on Ankara to suspend its support to abusive SNA commanders and factions and provide reparations to victims. The human rights watchdog also called on the international community to provide assistance to ensure that civilians are protected under the new transitional authorities, "including supporting an independent judiciary to ensure lawful detention and treatment of detainees." "As Syria’s transitional government is integrating into its ranks SNA factions and other gangs, it must exclude those in the SNA that are responsible for abuses and hold them accountable," Coogle said. "If it doesn’t do so, the Syrian people will not be able to trust their armed forces and will be vulnerable to yet more abuse." |

More than a decade on, 2,500 Yazidis still missing after ISIS attack |
2025-05-12 |
[Rudaw] Over a decade after the Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) launched its brutal attack on the Yazidi heartland of Shingal (Sinjar) in northern Iraq, the fate of approximately 2,500 Yazidis remains unknown, a Kurdish official told Rudaw on Sunday, adding that most of the missing are believed to be in Syria. Hussein Qaidi, head of the Office for Rescuing Abducted Yazidis — affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Presidency — stated that "around 2,500 Yazidis remain missing to this day, the majority of whom are believed to be in Syria, particularly in the northeast [Rojava]." On Friday, families of the missing staged a rally in Shingal, urging the Iraqi government to press on the new authorities in Syria to help find their loved ones. Qaidi noted that some of the missing Yazidis are believed to be held in the infamous al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria, while others may have been transferred abroad. The al-Hol Camp located in Syria’s Hasakah province, currently holds over 40,000 people - mainly women and kiddies with alleged or confirmed ties to ISIS. The majority of the camp’s residents are Iraqis and Syrians, and security is maintained by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Since ISIS's territorial defeat in Iraq (2017) and Syria (2019), al-Hol has drawn international concern as a potential breeding ground for extremism. Qaidi on Sunday added that his office, which functions directly under the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, has successfully rescued 3,587 Yazidis so far. These include women, men, and children who were kidnapped during ISIS’s 2014 assault on Shingal and surrounding areas. In June 2014, ISIS seized large parts of northern and western Iraq. Two months later, in August, the group launched a devastating campaign against the Yazidi community in Shingal, abducting 6,417 Yazidi women and kiddies. Many were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labor. Approximately 200,000 Yazidis were displaced from Shingal during the onslaught, and many remain in displacement camps across the Kurdistan Region, especially in Duhok province. The United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... has officially recognized ISIS’s crimes against the Yazidis as genocide. Qaidi confirmed that the rescued Yazidis, though now free, are in dire need of psychological support. He highlighted a 2015 agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the German government, under which around 1,090 survivors were sent to Germany for treatment. Since then, additional survivors have been sent to Australia, Canada, and the United States for similar assistance. "Those who go abroad for psychological treatment are free to return or stay in those countries, based on their own choice," Qaidi said. |

"Today, our forces successfully thwarted an attempted terrorist attack by ISIS cells on one of our military points in the Hawaij Dhiban, Deir Ezzor’s eastern countryside," read a statement by the SDF. It added that "the terrorist attackers, riding a cycle of violence, opened fire on the military point using AK-47 rifles. Our forces responded decisively, engaging in a direct clash that forced the Death Eaters to flee under heavy fire. One member of the attacking cell was maimed, while no casualties were reported among our forces." Earlier in the same day, the SDF announced it had thwarted two additional ISIS attacks in the same region. "Our forces successfully foiled two ISIS terrorist attacks Wednesday evening in Deir Ezzor’s eastern countryside, when ISIS cells targeted a checkpoint of the Internal Security Forces [Asayish] in Dhiban and a Self-Defense vehicle in Jdeidet Akidat," the SDF said in a statement. No casualties were recorded in the attacks, according to the SDF. "Vigilance and swift response by our forces foiled both attacks," the statement added. These incidents are part of a broader uptick in ISIS activity in Deir ez-Zor. On Tuesday, the SDF reported the deaths of two of its fighters following a machine-gun assault by an ISIS cell on a military point in the town of al-Bahra, located in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. The assailants reportedly expeditiously departed at a goodly pace on cycle of violences. The SDF, backed by the United States, functions as the de facto military force of northeastern Syria (Rojava) and remains a key partner of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. The Kurdish-led force on Tuesday characterized the latest attacks as "part of a broader escalation by the terrorist organization against our forces in northern and eastern Syria, making use of the ongoing chaos in the country." "Our forces reaffirm their commitment to pursuing these terrorist cells until they are completely dismantled and the security and stability of the region are secured," the SDF asserted. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported in early April that ISIS has ramped up its attacks in SDF-controlled areas, targeting both civilians and security forces. The monitor documented over 50 such incidents since the beginning of 2025. SDF chief Mazloum Abdi has repeatedly warned about the persistent threat of ISIS, especially within detention centers and camps. In January, Abdi stressed the "need to intensify efforts to continue the fight against ISIS if we don’t want to see it make a comeback." |
