Rivlin tasks Netanyahu with forming government
2021-04-07
[IsraelTimes] President Reuven Rivlin announces Benjamin Netanyahu is his choice to take the first crack at forming a government.

He speaks of his trouble in choosing a candidate, and says the president can’t be a replacement for a court and make a decision a judge will not, referring to Netanyahu’s legal woes.

"According to the court and the law, a prime minister under indictment can continue to serve," he notes.

"This was not an easy decision," he says.

Netanyahu will now have 28 days to try to muster a coalition that can win majority support in the Knesset.

Israel's new Gulf relations give Biden's team a new Middle East hub
2020-12-07
[TheHill] November became a turning point for Israel’s new ties with Gulf states. It began with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announcing a $23 billion deal that included advanced F-35 warplanes and drones for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and ended with important delegations from Bahrain to Israel. Together, these bookends represent just two facets of multifaceted diplomatic relations. The new ties that the Trump administration helped broker among Israel, the UAE and Bahrain were part of a push for normalization and peace, but they are rapidly growing into a relationship with cultural, trade and academic ties and ramifications for strategic defense concerns.

In retrospect, it seems natural that the real symbol of new Israel-Gulf ties would not be in the hard politics of diplomacy, but rather in trade. Tel Aviv, the city that always seems to have a new tower under construction along the main Ayalon freeway when I visit, and Dubai are perfectly placed to plug in to one another. Both are centers of trade and commerce, and only COVID-19 has set them back from setting new record years of growth.

Speaking at a recent first Israel-Dubai conference, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said on Nov. 25 that "this is not something I was sure I would see in my lifetime." Rivlin met with a delegation from Bahrain’s King Hamad

Why did Balad change its mind about Benny Gantz?
2020-03-16
[JPost] - Balad’s decision on Sunday to join its partners in the Joint List by endorsing Blue and White head Benny Gantz to form a coalition government came as a surprise to Arab Israelis, who appeared to be divided on the move.

While many welcomed Joint List’s unanimous endorsement of Gantz, others expressed disappointment over Balad’s change of heart.

After the election in September, Balad refused to join its allies in the Joint List by endorsing Gantz for the premiership.

In recommending Gantz then, Joint List leaders told President Reuven Rivlin that "for us, the most important thing is to remove [Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu from power."
Should've made Israeli "Anyone but Bibi" crowd stop and think. Alas, they can't think.

What will be the political fallout of the security situation? - Analysis
2019-11-12
[Jpost] Islamic Jihad commander Bahaa Abu al-Atta has been in the IDF’s crosshairs for a long time; his assassination considered over a year ago, and finally decided, together with Prime Minister and then-defense minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to do it 10 days ago. And while the IDF’s considerations were apparently free of politics, there will likely be political reverberations to the actions taken in the middle of the government-forming period.

...Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. Blue and White leader Benny Gantz has eight days left until his deadline to form a government, and President Reuven Rivlin cannot legally give him an extension.

In a video addressed to the citizens of Israel, Gantz reassured the public that the strike on Gaza was not political and had to be done even in the difficult political timing.

"For the sake of Israel's security, the political and security echelons are often tasked with making difficult decisions, while taking into account the potential ramifications," he said. "Such was the decision to execute last night's operation, on which I was briefed ahead of time. This was an appropriate decision, both politically and operationally.

...Those accusing Netanyahu of allowing the operation to move forward now for political reasons ‐ like the Joint List and some MKs in Labor-Gesher and Democratic Union ‐ might point to Avigdor Liberman’s remarks in an interview on Walla! News in which he said that he wanted the assassination to happen last year, when he was defense minister, but Netanyahu blocked his decision. Then, Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin all but confirmed it’s true by responding to a question from Channel 12 about the comment by saying he’s surprised Liberman would reveal classified contents of a Security Cabinet meeting.

It must be said, though, that if Netanyahu was doing this for political reasons, he could have picked better timing. Blue and White leader Benny Gantz currently has the mandate to form a government. If this suddenly inspires Likud and Blue and White to put their differences aside and form a unity government, then Gantz would legally be prime minister first, which is not what Netanyahu wants.

If the IDF had its eye on al-Atta for so long, the ideal political timing for Netanyahu could have been three weeks ago, when he still had the mandate, or even in May, when he was struggling to convince Liberman to join a right-wing coalition.

...There is one political option that has come up in recent weeks that could be taken totally off the table due to the latest events, and that is the possibility of Gantz forming a minority government supported from the outside by the Joint List.

If some in Blue and White were willing to ignore the deep differences between them and the Joint List for a shared goal, getting rid of Netanyahu, that will be much harder to do now.
The fact that Arabs are for it, should've clued you jerks
Gantz may have said "this action will have no impact on the political advances taking place," but it is almost guaranteed to narrow his options and rid him of what little leverage he had in negotiations with Netanyahu.

Liberman: I wanted al-Ata killed a year ago, Netanyahu prevented it
2019-11-12
Success has many fathers
[Jpost] Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman claimed in an interview to Walla that he wanted to target kill top Islamic Jihad commander Bahaa Abu al-Ata a year ago, when serving as Defense Minister, and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the one who resisted and prevented it.

"I claimed a year ago that we should have looked for a targeted killing of [al-Ata], then it was the prime minister who forcefully prevented it. It doesn't matter why, he just did, but it's better late than never," Liberman said.
President Reuven Rivlin and politicians from across the political spectrum came out in support of the IDF operation Tuesday morning which killed top Islamic Jihad commander Bahaa Abu Al-Atta in the Gaza Strip earlier in the day.

"We stand behind the security forces, who have been working for the success of this morning's operations for a long time," Rivlin said in a statement. "I know that they, and the Israeli government that approved the operation, have Israel's security, and only that, in their minds.

"This is no time for political squabbles, and those who do so bring no credit to themselves. It is the time to stop such statements immediately. Israeli citizens – please listen to the life-saving instructions of the IDF Home Front Command and take good care of yourselves."

Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, a former IDF chief of staff, praised the military for the successful operation and said it was the "right decision." He said that he had been updated about the strike before it was carried out.

"Blue and White will support any justified action taken to keep Israel safe and we place the security of our residents above politics," Gantz said.

Kurdish politician appeals to Israel for help in northern Syria
2019-10-20
[ALMASDARNEWS] An unnamed Kurdish politician appealed to the Israeli government for assistance against the Ottoman Turkish forces in northern Syria, the publication UAWire reported.

Citing the unnamed politician’s interview with Israeli Army Radio this week, the latter asked the Israeli government for help, pointing out if they do not, "the whole region will suffer" if no one stops the Ottoman Turkish operation in Syria.

He also warned of severe consequences not only for the Middle East but for the whole world if former bully boyz of the Islamic State

They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, who fled because of the Ottoman Turkish invasion, will get out of Syria.

Earlier in the week, the Israeli Chief Rabbi David Lau called on Israeli President Reuven Rivlin to support the Syrian Kurds in their opposition to Ottoman Turkish aggression. "These days, our hearts are with the Kurds, who are facing mass destruction," said Lau.

Rivlin taps Netanyahu with forming coalition
2019-09-26
[IsraelTimes] President Reuven Rivlin taps Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new coalition, for the second time in five months.

The move comes after efforts to force a unity agreement with Blue and White’s Benny Gantz fail.

Rivlin says he made the decision after consulting with party leaders.

Neither Netanyahu nor Gantz received 61 nominations from MKs, says Rivlin. He therefore decided to pick Netanyahu (55 votes) as he was better poised to form a government than Gantz, who received 54 nominations, 10 of whom ‐ the Arab politicians ‐ have ruled out joining a Gantz-led coalition.

Under the law, Rivlin has seven days after receiving the results to name someone to form a government, but has opted to move ahead without delay.

Netanyahu will now have 28 days to form a government, with a possible two-week extension.

If all attempts fail, Rivlin can then assign the task to someone else. After that, if 61 politicians nominate another candidate, that politician will also be given a chance.

Otherwise: Israel heads to its third election in a year.

Netanyahu edges out Gantz in nominations for PM
2019-09-23
A total of 55 Knesset members recommended to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu be the one tasked with forming the next government, making it likely that Rivlin will acquiesce to their demand.

Previously, Blue and White candidate MK Benny Gantz had 57 MKs recommending him for premier. However, Rivlin accepted the request by the Joint Arab List's Balad faction to withdraw their recommendation, leaving Gantz with a maximum of just 44 recommendations.

Israel's Netanyahu clings to power as coalition talks loom
2019-09-21
[DAWN] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced local media headlines on Friday suggesting power is slipping from his grasp after an election in which he trails his main rival with nearly all votes counted.

The right-wing leader failed on Tuesday, for the second time in five months, to secure a clear election victory and the centrist Blue and White party led by ex-armed forces chief Benny Gantz rebuffed his calls to join a unity government on Thursday.

Near-final results released on Friday by the Knesset's election committee showed Blue and White will be the largest single party in the new parliament with 33 of the 120 seats, with Netanyahu's Likud winning 31 seats, three less than it had before.

Israeli newspapers and commentators depicted the 69-year-old leader as in a weakened position, with headlines such as: "Himself Alone" and "Political Death Spasms".

Israeli president Reuven Rivlin will on Sunday start consultations with the parties about choosing a leader to put together a coalition.

There were only narrow differences in the two main parties' campaigns on many important issues, and an end to the Netanyahu era would be unlikely to bring significant changes in policy on relations with the United States, the regional struggle against Iran
