Islamic Jihad threatens Israel as hunger-striking detainee reported in critical condition |
2022-01-02 |
The detainee, Hisham Abu Hawwash, has been on a hunger strike for 138 days in protest of his administrative detention. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) organization warned over the weekend that if a Palestinian administrative detainee who is on hunger strike dies it would consider his death an "assassination" by Israel. The detainee, Hisham Abu Hawash, has been on hunger strike for 138 days in protest of his administrative detention. He was recently transferred to the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh), where he is reported to be in critical condition. Abu Hawash has been held in administrative detention since October 2020.
PIJ Secretary-General Ziyad al-Nakhala threatened that if Abu Hawash dies, his organization would consider the death an assassination and respond accordingly. A PIJ statement issued in the Gaza Strip claimed that Abu Hawash was "being subjected to a process of assassination." "All options are open and on the table in case the occupation continues its procrastination and evasion of responsibility," the statement cautioned. A PIJ-affiliated armed group called the Jenin Brigades in the West Bank threatened that Israel would pay a heavy price if the prisoner dies. The group announced a "state of general mobilization" among its members, saying it was ready for retaliation. Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh on Saturday called on Israel to release the detainee. "Abu Hawash is in critical condition and we hold the occupation authorities fully responsible for his life," he said. On Friday, a delegation from the PA Health Ministry visited Abu Hawash at the hospital and found that his health condition was seriously dangerous as he suffers blurry vision, significant muscular atrophy and inability to move and talk, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said that it had reached out to international human rights organizations to demand that Abu Hawash be moved to a Palestinian hospital after the serious deterioration in his health condition. During his visit to the Iranian capital, on Friday, in a ceremony commemorating the first anniversary of the liquidation of Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis, Nakhalah reiterated his assertion that "Qassem Soleimani sent us missiles that struck the capital of the Zionist entity, and these missiles are still doing their work" and that this Iranian leader was present. He explained, "Qassem Soleimani was assassinated because he was an obstacle to the United States and Israel in their efforts to reform the region." Commenting on the recent Paleostinian military maneuvers in Gaza, Nakhalah told al-Mayadeen TV that it was "conducted with live weapons" from beginning to end, and that it was a message to Tel Aviv, despite its attempt to minimize it to reassure the Israelis, explaining that "long-range missiles have been tested. Its range exceeded approximately 100 km in the maneuver." |

Hundreds ‘ambush' Tampa police responding to report of shots fired, 2 officers injured, chief says |
2020-06-24 |
![]() Officers were responding to a report of shots fired and a possible gunshot victim at an intersection near the Ybor City neighborhood around 1 a.m., Chief Brian Duggan told reporters Monday. A crowd of hundreds was at the scene when police arrived. As offices searched for a possible victim, Duggan said the hundreds of people blocked all four ends of the intersection and became aggressive. The crowd surrounded officers, threw bottles and glass, and jumped on a police vehicle. Officers could not locate a victim. "It's an ambush. I have no other way to describe it,” Duggan said. “When there are that many people out there and clearly no one had been shot. It was just a set up to get the cops there." One officer was hit in the head with an object and suffered a small laceration and swelling, police said. The officer was treated and released from the hospital. A second officer who was hit in the head with a glass bottle is also expected to be OK. Aerial footage from the scene shows a crowd surrounding officers at an intersection and officials can be heard over audio saying that an officer had been struck with a bottle. At one point, a large group of the crowd can be seen running away down the street. “There were hundreds of them,” Dugan said, referring to the crowd. “Hundreds. We actually ended up having to call every single police officer that was available that night to respond there, from New Tampa to South Tampa.” Duggan said that over 100 officers responded to the scene. One person was arrested. Responding to a question on department morale during this time of heightened anti-police sentiment, Duggan said the pressure currently on police officers is “incredible.” “Just by doing your job, whether you’re right or wrong, it doesn’t matter right now,” he said. “No one is listening. Any justified action is getting twisted.” Related: Tampa: 2020-06-20 Florida man is dead after asking friend, ‘What, are you going to shoot me?’ Tampa: 2020-06-13 Abbas eulogizes jihad terrorist on FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List who once lived in Tampa Tampa: 2020-06-07 Former Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shallah finally moves on to a warmer place |

Nasrallah threatens US, protesters amid economic turmoil - Explainer |
2020-06-17 |
Cry me a river The long speech was reprinted at Iran’s Fars News and was tweeted online in translation by expert David Daoud. The speech was wide ranging and touched on several key topics. He began by memorializing a Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader named Ramadan Shallah who died on June 7. Islamic Jihad is supported by Iran and Hezbollah. It has been the source of attacks on Israel over the past years and Israel has targeted its members. Nasrallah said Palestinians are under threat of Israeli annexation and must unify. He spoke about unifying the Islamic "ummah" in the face of Israel and that Shi’ites and Sunnis should work together. Iran and Turkish leaders have also said this in recent weeks. Because they've gotten along so well over the last 1300 years Hezbollah wants to try to unite Shi’ites and Sunnis under its banner to fight the US and others. This was clear from the speech. Nasrallah fears sectarianism or a return to civil strife. Hezbollah, it must be remembered, emerged during the civil war in Lebanon and emerged stronger after it. Hezbollah took credit for Israel’s withdrawal in 2005 and then murdered the Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafic Hariri in 2005. In 2008 it clashed with protesters in Beirut and took over Beirut in a show of force. Since then it has held the presidency hostage, maneuvered its people into the presidency and Prime Minister’s office and sent forces to fight in Syria and to Iraq. Hezbollah now wants to be the arbiter of Lebanon’s future and it knows that sectarian strife can undermine that. |

He was elected head of Paleostinian Islamic Jihad after the killing of the group's former chief, Fathi Shiqaqi, in 1995.
Shalah was appointed head of the terror group after the assassination of his predecessor, Fathi Shikaki in Malta, which was widely attributed to Israel. He was succeeded by Ziad al-Nakhala in 2018. In 2003, Shalah was among eight Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives indicted in the United States on 53 terrorism and racketeering counts for running a cell out of Tampa, Florida. Though four suspects were arrested, Shalah was overseas and charged in absentia. The US Department of Justice, in a statement on the indictment at the time, underlined the terror group’s role in suicide bombings that killed scores of Israelis, and at least two Americans, 20-year-old Alisa Flatow and 16-year-old Shoshana Ben-Yishai. In April 2018, Shalah was transferred from Damascus, where he lives, to a hospital in Beirut after suffering a series of heart attacks, a source close to the group told the Palestinian Quds Press news agency. Shalah has been unconscious since undergoing surgery at the Beirut hospital, the report said. Although the source attributed the Islamic Jihad leader’s deteriorating health to “natural causes,” the Palestinian Authority embassy in Beirut believed there’s a possibility Shalah may have been poisoned. Egypt negotiates with Palestinian Islamic Jihad on Rafah crossing |

[Al Ahram] Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah... (PIJ) has offered Egypt an initiative on administering the Rafah-Gazoo border, sources told Ahram Online PIJ secretary-general Ramadan Shallah visited Cairo on Sunday to discuss the situation at the Rafah-Gazoo border with Egyptian officials, as Egypt reportedly demanded all Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, staff stop all contacts with the Egyptian side. Egypt has increasingly expressed its distaste for Hamas rule in Gazoo stressing it will only deal with the Paleostinian Authority on this issue, sources said. An Egyptian intelligence source said that Cairo has been dealing for a while with the PIJ. The source added that Jihad, the second largest Islamist organization in the Israeli-besieged Strip, has shown more "flexibility" in dealing with Egypt than Hamas. Egypt has accused Hamas, which rules the Gazoo Strip, of involvement in terrorist activities in the Sinai Peninsula. However, a lie repeated often enough remains a lie... Hamas leaders have distanced themselves from violence in Egypt and say they have no armed presence in areas outside Paleostinian land. In October, Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah crossing following a major deadly attack by Islamist snuffies on an Egyptian army checkpoint which left more than 30 dead. |

Thousands Join Islamic Jihad Rally In Gaza | ||||
2012-10-05 | ||||
[Ma'an] Tens of thousands of Islamic Jihad supporters gathered in al-Kateba square in Gaza City on Thursday to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the movement's founding. The event also marked the 17th anniversary of the assassination of Islamic Jihad's founder Fathi al-Shiqaqi. Islamic Jihad secretary-general Ramadan Shallah addressed the crowds and called for a new national strategy. "The Palestinian project of establishing a state on the 1967 borders through negotiations has obviously failed," Shallah said. Nineteen years of failed negotiations have created a crisis which cannot be resolved by insisting on more negotiations, or through non-violent resistance, he added. Shallah said Islamic Jihad supported all methods of resistance, and would not rule out armed struggle from the Palestinian agenda. He said regional revolutions were "a double-edged sword": they gave hope to Palestinians, but Arab countries were too embroiled in domestic concerns to help the Palestinian cause.
