Chad general dies in rebel battle
2006-03-31
Chad's senior army commander has been killed in fighting with rebels on its border with Sudan, army officials say.

Gen Abakar Itno - the nephew of Chad's President Idriss Deby - died of injuries in clashes in the Moudeina area, south of the border town of Adre.

Chad alleges Rally for Democracy and Liberty rebels receive support from the Janjaweed militia operating in the neighbouring Sudanese region of Darfur.

Aid officials say the fighting involved about 1,000 men on each side.

Gen Itno was commanding the military operation launched 10 days ago against the rebels.

"Gen Abakar Youssouf Mahamat Itno has died of his injuries," an unnamed military source told Reuters news agency.

"Caught without communications, the general was surprised by the rebels who seriously wounded him," the source added.

Tensions

The start of the operation came a week after the Chadian government said it had foiled a coup attempt against President Deby.

Chad: Ripe for a coup?

In December, Chad declared a state of war with Sudan following a deadly attack launched from Darfur by Chadian rebels.

Sudan repeatedly denied allegations made by Chad that it was backing the rebels and sending Arab militias in support.

In February, Chad and Sudan signed an accord to resolve their differences over fighting along the border.

Mr Deby seized power in 1990 after launching a rebellion from bases in Darfur.

Chad president says he fears fresh attack from Sudan
2005-12-28
Chad, which accuses Sudan of backing rebel attacks on its eastern border, fears Khartoum may be preparing a fresh assault which could also destabilise other neighbouring states, President Idriss Deby said. Deby briefed the president of Central African Republic, Francois Bozize, late on Monday about Chad's charges that the Sudanese government organized and directed two attacks by Chadian rebels against the border town of Adre on Dec. 18. "One can't rule out Khartoum making another repeat attack against Chad," Deby told reporters in N'Djamena after meeting Bozize. He said the Sudanese government was preparing for such a move at el-Geneina in Sudan's western Darfur region.

On Friday, Chad said a "state of belligerence" existed between itself and Sudan. The Sudanese government expressed surprise and said it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks on neighbouring states. But Deby, who accuses Khartoum of supporting Chadian rebels of the Rally for Democracy and Liberty (RDL) who are seeking to topple him, said Sudan's government had sent a 50-vehicle motorised military column towards the southern Sudanese border. Without offering more details, he suggested this might risk destabilising Central African Republic, which lies southwest of Sudan. "This is a worry not just for Chad but for all of Sudan's neighbours ... if Chad is targeted, I don't see how Central African Republic won't be affected," Deby said.

Chad declares 'state of belligerence'
2005-12-24
The Chadian government has said that it is in a "state of belligerence" with neighbouring Sudan, which it blames for an attack on a border town last weekend.
That means they're at war...
That's not good enough for the liberal left, since the Chadians actually didn't declare war ...
If a state of belligerence exists, that implies they did. But they don't have UN permission, so it prob'ly doesn't count.
Chad's declaration is also awaiting certification from the editorial boards at the New York Times and the Grauniad...
Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor, a government spokesman, told reporters on Friday: "Chad is today in a state of belligerence with Sudan. The friends of Chad must support it by all means possible in this ordeal."
We should be in on that, but I'm sure the Donks would kill any move toward supporting them...
... cheez, you want someone to get hurt?
The comments came a day after Idriss Deby, the president of Chad, accused his Sudanese counterpart of plotting to destabilise his country, blaming Khartoum for a rebel attack on the frontier town of Adre. The president made the accusation during a visit to the town to decorate troops who killed about 100 rebels while repelling the attack by forces of the Rally for Democracy and Liberty. Doumgor said: "The government of Chad believes that one must not stop at simple condemnations of principle but that the enemy of Chad must be pointed out ... [Sudanese] president Omar Hassan Ahmed el Bashir."
