Over 30 airport workers expelled over suspected Hezbollah ties

[AnNahar] Lebanese authorities have started "curbing Hezbollah’s influence at the Rafik Hariri International Airport," after the Airport Security Apparatus revoked the authorizations of a large number of airport workers who are loyal to Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia

"More than 30 airport workers have been informed of the expiry of the permits granted to them and that it will not be possible to renew them," an informed source at the airport told the daily.

This decision "did not only involve workers who carry travelers’ luggage into and from the airport, but also those who carry luggage into and from planes, in addition to a number of employees who worked at the department of baggage inspection and lost items," the source said.

"The decision represented a shock to those affected by the expulsion, especially that they spent long years working at the airport while enjoying freedom of action and without any accountability," the source added.

These measures are aimed at "enhancing the security of the airport and travelers and weakening Hezbollah’s influence in it to the greatest extent," the source went on to say, noting that those expelled were "Hezbollah’s eyes and ears inside the airport and a main source of the information it used to gather about the movement of travelers from and into the airport."

"Granting them work and airport access permits used to take place following requests and pressure from Hezbollah, and anyone who was not loyal to Hezbollah used to be denied such a permit, which broadened its influence at the airport for long decades," the source added.

A security source meanwhile told Asharq al-Awsat that similar measures will target members and officers from the customs administration, Internal Security Forces and General Security, adding that many are suspected of having facilitated Hezbollah’s transactions over the past period.

responded to in kind, followed Israel’s public warning on Thursday that Tehran was using civilian planes to smuggle cash for Hezbollah to rebuild itself, in violation of the November 27 ceasefire agreement between Israel and the terror group. Throughout nearly 14 months of war until the ceasefire, Israel had repeatedly accused Hezbollah of using Lebanon’s only airport to smuggle in supplies from Iran.

The refusal to let Iranian planes land in Beirut sparked pro-Hezbollah riots, during which the UNIFIL general’s car was torched. Lebanese authorities have detained more than 25 people as part of an investigation into the attack, which the US State Department said was carried out "reportedly by a group of Hezbollah supporters."

In a statement Sunday, Hezbollah condemned the incident and said it "affirms its firm rejection of any targeting of [UNIFIL] as well as any harm to public and private property."

The condemnation came at the end of a message assailing the Lebanese military for attacking what Hezbollah described as "a peaceful movement and a civilized expression of popular opposition to unjustified submission to foreign dictates."

"The protesters were surprised when some Lebanese army personnel launched tear gas canisters toward them," said the terror group, adding that it "calls on the army leadership to open an urgent investigation into this condemned attack."

Hezbollah urged Lebanon’s government to "assume its responsibility in protecting the peaceful protesters."

The terror group also demanded the government "reverse its decision to prevent Iranian planes from landing at Beirut Airport, and take serious measures to prevent the Israeli enemy from imposing its dictates and violating national illusory sovereignty."

On Sunday, a Lebanese security source told AFP Washington had warned Beirut that Israel could shoot down two Iranian flights to Lebanon, one on Thursday and another on Friday.

Under the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, Israel is entitled to carry out attacks against imminent threats by the terror group.

The source who spoke to AFP said that Israel conveyed to Lebanon on Thursday, via the US, that "it would target the airport if the Iranian plane landed in Lebanon."

"The American side told the Lebanese side that Israel was serious about its threat," said the source, adding that Lebanon’s public works and transport ministry then refused clearance for the flight after consulting the prime minister and president.

The message was passed on to Iran before the flight took off, said the source.

Another flight was also barred from taking off from Iran on Friday, which prompted the Hezbollah supporters to block the road to Lebanon’s only airport.

Lebanon’s new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, whose government includes Hezbollah as a minor member, said Saturday that "the security of Beirut airport takes precedence over any other consideration."

"And the safety of travelers as well as the safety of Lebanese citizens are elements on which we will not compromise," he said.

Salam, a former top judge at the International Court of Justice, was tapped for premier by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun last month. His election, with the backing of Gay Paree, Riyadh and Washington, ended a two-year impasse.

Previously the commander of Lebanon’s military, Aoun has vowed to maintain a state monopoly on arms — a thinly veiled threat against Hezbollah’s extensive arsenal. The terror group was the only Lebanese militia not to surrender its arms to the state when the country’s 15-year civil war ended in 1990.

Hezbollah is required under the ceasefire agreement with Israel to vacate southern Lebanon. Israel was given 60 days, until January 26, to withdraw from the area. The withdrawal deadline was extended, with Beirut’s approval, to February 18. Israel is reportedly seeking to stay longer in some areas of south Lebanon.

Since a Lebanese man, who was missing for 40 years, was freed by Syrian rebels from a prison in Hama last week, many Lebanese families are demanding to know the fate of their loved ones who are thought to be detained in Syrian prisons since Lebanon's civil war when Syrian troops were in Lebanon.

- ASSASSINATIONS BLAMED ON SYRIA -
Hariri was assassinated in 2005 by a bomb in Beirut, blamed on Syria and Hezbollah. His liquidation sparked protests that ousted Syrian troops from Lebanon. Following Hariri's killing, several anti-Syrian figures were assassinated, including Samir Qassir, George Hawi, Gebran Tueni, Pierre Amine Gemayel, Antoine Ghanem and Walid Eido. Others escaped liquidation attempts including Elias Mur, May Chidiac, and Samir Shehade.

Jumblat's father, Kamal Jumblat was assassinated in 1977 in his car near Baakline by unidentified button men suspected to be members of the pro-Syrian faction of the Lebanese Syrian Social Nationalist Party, in collaboration with the Ba'ath Party.

In 1982, President Bashir Gemayel was killed with 26 other politicians by a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party who detonated a bomb from a few miles away using a remote detonator. He said he killed Gemayel because of his collaboration with Israel, which invaded Lebanon in 1982.

Kataeb leader and Bashir's nephew Sami Gemayel wrote on X that "the criminal tyrant has fallen". "But Lebanon remains and the Kataeb remains."

2 killed, 2 wounded in Israeli strikes on south Lebanon

[An Nahar] An Israeli strike on the southern border town of Aita al-Shaab killed two people and injured one Friday, the National News Agency said, while another strike on Kfarkela injured one person.

One Israeli soldier and three Lebanese civilians were earlier maimed in overnight cross-border fire between

Hezbollah and the Israeli army.

The three Lebanese civilians were maimed in an overnight strike on the southern border town of Kfarhamam in the Arqoob region while the Israeli army said Friday that one soldier was maimed in a Hezbollah overnight attack on Metula.

Hezbollah said it attacked soldiers and military vehicles in the Malkia post and another military vehicle in Metula.

Later on Friday, Israeli warplanes raided Kfarkela, Tayr Harfa, Aita al-Shaab, the outskirts of Shebaa and houses in Zalloutieh and Yarin, while Hezbollah targeted the Hadb Yaroun post, a group of soldiers in Manara, and surveillance equipment in the Zar'it barracks.

An Israeli tank also shelled Kfarkela and al-Khiam.

On Thursday Hezbollah carried out five attacks on posts in northern Israel and the occupied Kfarshouba Hills and Shebaa Farms near Kfarhamam.

Syria accuses Israel of rare daytime strike, says 3 soldiers wounded

Israel carried out a rare daytime strike against targets in northwestern Syria on Sunday morning, injuring three soldiers and causing damage, the state-run broadcaster SANA said.

While alleged Israeli attacks in Syria typically take place under the cover of darkness, Sunday’s strike was conducted at around 7:15 a.m., according to SANA.

There was no response from the Israel Defense Forces, in line with its policy of not commenting on specific air raids in the country.

Stephanie Saliba arrested over Riad Salameh's case

The development is the latest in the controversy surrounding Salameh, who is being investigated for corruption as an economic meltdown and financial collapse convulse the tiny nation.

According to the National News Agency, a judge, acting on a request by Financial Prosecutor Judge Ali Ibrahim, ordered that Saliba be placed in jug after she showed up earlier in the day at the prosecutor’s office in Beirut for questioning. The report gave no reason for her arrest.
