Pro-Hamas mob once again terrorizing Paris, being violent with the police and chanting genocidal slogans against Jews
2024-11-14
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

They need a firehose to put out the fireworks. With Israeli skunk water would be best, but plain, cold water would suffice to get the message across.
The Times of Israel has reports:
Protests erupted in Paris on Wednesday against a gala organized by French far-right figures in support of Israel. The event, intended to raise funds for the Israeli military, had included Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich among its invited guests, though he didn’t end up attending.

The demonstrations came on the eve of a high-stakes soccer match at France’s national stadium against the Israeli national team, overshadowed by tensions around Israel’s wars against the Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups. Authorities in Paris announced that more than 4,000 police officers and 1,600 stadium staff would be deployed for the game.

Smotrich, a vocal advocate of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, had been expected to attend Wednesday’s gala, dubbed “Israel is Forever,” which was planned by an association of the same name. The group’s stated goal is to “mobilize French-speaking Zionist forces.”

After days of growing criticism of the event, Smotrich’s office confirmed Wednesday that the minister would not travel to Paris to participate.

But the invitation to Smotrich drew sharp criticism from local associations, unions and left-wing political parties, prompting two protests in the French capital. The minister, a hardline leader, has been promoting far-reaching settlement plans in the West Bank and drew international condemnation this week by saying he hopes the election of Donald Trump in the US would clear the way for Israeli annexation of the West Bank — a step that would likely extinguish Palestinian statehood dreams.

The French Foreign Ministry called Smotrich’s remarks “contrary to international law” and counterproductive to efforts to reduce regional tensions.

Critics also pointed at Nili Kupfer-Naouri, president of the “Israel is Forever” association, who sparked outrage in 2023, after the Israel-Hamas war started, when she tweeted that “no civilian in Gaza was innocent.” Gazan civilians have been found to be holding hostages abducted from Israel in their homes.

On Wednesday night, several hundred protesters marched through central Paris, denouncing the event as a “gala of hatred and shame.”

“Imagine if an association were hosting a gala for Hezbollah or Hamas — there’s no way the police would allow that,” said Melkir Saib, a 30-year-old protester. “The situation is just unfair.” (The EU designates Hamas and the military wing of Hezbollah as terrorist entities.)

Some demonstrators broke windows at a McDonald’s along the route, though the march was largely peaceful.

A separate group, including Jewish leftist organizations opposed to racism and antisemitism, gathered near the Arc de Triomphe chanting slogans against the gala and Smotrich.

French authorities defended the event, with Paris police chief Laurent Nunez stating that the gala posed “no major threat to public order.”

The protests came days after tensions flared in Paris — a massive “Free Palestine” banner was displayed during a Paris Saint-Germain Champions League match against Atletico Madrid last week — and after riots and violence targeting Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam.

ONLY ISRAELI, FRENCH FLAGS AT PARIS SOCCER GAME
French authorities stepped up security ahead of the Israel-France Nations League soccer match in Paris on Thursday, hoping to avoid a repeat of the violent clashes in Amsterdam.

“It’s an exceptional measure, three to four times greater than what we usually mobilize,” Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told RTL radio on Wednesday.

Only French and Israel flags will be allowed inside the stadium, he added.

In a rare move, police will also be deployed inside the stadium. Civilian staff are normally assigned to those roles.

An elite police unit will guard the Israeli team on its journey to and from the stadium and another 1,600 civilian security personnel will also be on duty at the match.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said after the Amsterdam clashes there was never any question the game would go ahead as planned.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Michel Barnier, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, Sports Minister Gil Averous, former President Nicolas Sarkozy, and former French president François Hollande were all set to attend the game in a show of solidarity. Israel’s ambassador Joshua Zarka will also be there.

Still, turnout will likely be low, with just 20,000 fans expected in the 80,000-capacity stadium north of Paris.

Israel coach Ran Ben Shimon said he wanted to separate soccer from the “difficult” context as his side prepared to take on France.

When asked about the context in which Thursday’s game was taking place, Ben Shimon said he remained focused on the match.

Passions over Israel’s war with Palestinian terror group Hamas in Gaza run high in France, home to Europe’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities. Reports of antisemitic acts increased by an “unprecedented” 284 percent in 2023, France’s Human Rights Commission said in June, while anti-Muslim acts rose around a third.

Aurélien Bernheïm, co-founder of the Movement for French Jews, a right-wing Zionist youth group, said around 30 of his organization’s members would attend the Paris match.

“But I won’t hide it, many of these young people were scared to go as they had in their heads these appalling images from Amsterdam,” he said.

Walid Attalah, president of the Associations of Palestinians in Ile de France, said the match should have been canceled.

“Russia has been banned because there was the occupation of Ukraine, it was illegal, there were war crimes, but Israel is never sanctioned for what it does,” he said.

Some supporters, however, shrugged off concerns.

“I’m not worried,” said Yannick Vanhee, who leads a French supporters association in Dunkirk. “Authorities have been putting more and more security into these events.”

by Viktor Vasiliev

[REGNUM] On April 7, early in the morning, Rwandan President Paul Kagame lit a flame of remembrance at the Gisozi memorial. Five thousand guests, including more than thirty heads of state, government, former presidents and representatives of international organizations, gathered around a black stage with a large illuminated tree in the center. Rwanda marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide of the Tutsi, an event significant not only for the African continent, but also for the entire world politics. This is confirmed by the composition of the guests. Current and former leaders include Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, European Council President Charles Michel, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and former US President Bill Clinton, who led the White House during the Rwandan genocide.

Why Did The U.S. And Its Allies Bomb Libya? Corruption Case Against Sarkozy Sheds New Light
2018-05-05
[The Intercept] SEVEN YEARS AFTER the popular uprising against Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and the NATO intervention that removed him from power, Libya is extremely fractured and a source of regional instability. But while Congress has heavily scrutinized the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi a year after Gaddafi’s overthrow and death, there has been no U.S. investigation into the broader question of what led the U.S. and its allies to intervene so disastrously in Libya.

However, a corruption investigation into former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is opening a new window into little-known motivations in the NATO alliance that may have accelerated the rush to oust the Libyan dictator.

Last month, French police detained and questioned Sarkozy about illicit payments Gaddafi is said to have made to Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential election campaign. A few days after Sarkozy was released from detention, he was ordered to stand trial for corruption and influence-peddling in a related case, in which he had sought information on the Gaddafi inquiry from an appeals court judge. The scandal has highlighted a little-appreciated bind that Sarkozy faced in the run-up to the Libyan intervention: The French president, who took the lead among Europeans in the military campaign against Gaddafi, was eager to compensate for diplomatic blunders in Tunisia and Egypt and most likely angry about an arms deal with Gaddafi that went awry. Sarkozy, it now appears, was eager to shift the narrative to put himself at the forefront of a pro-democracy, anti-Gaddafi intervention.

Paris regional council vows to strip funding from BDS promoters
Fighting back.
[Jpost] A regional council in France that includes Paris passed a precedent-setting amendment that excludes funding from promoters of boycotts against Israel.

The council of the Ile-de-France region, where right-wing parties have a majority, adopted the amendment Thursday, the Le Monde Juif website reported the following day.

The report said the council’s president, Valérie Pécresse of the UMP party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, led the vote in keeping with her campaign promises to pursue vigorous measures against the BDS movement – an acronym for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

“In accordance with the law, I will not tolerate any form of boycotts against Israel in the Ile-de-France region,” she said while campaigning for the top executive political position of the region, which is home to most of France’s 500,000 Jews.

Robert Ejnes, deputy president of the CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish communities, in a Twitter post congratulated the council for its amendment, whose final text was not yet published. Ariel Goldmann, another CRIF vice president, wrote on Twitter about the measure: “Thank you and bravo.”

In France, several dozen promoters of a boycott against Israel have been convicted of inciting hate or discrimination. Some activists have been convicted based on the 2003 Lellouche law, which extends anti-racism laws to the targeting of specific nations for discriminatory treatment.

The judiciary in neighboring Spain has cracked down in recent years on BDS initiatives, declaring them unconstitutional. Last month, the high court of the Asturias region there joined other Spanish high tribunals in upholding rulings by lower instances declaring BDS discriminatory.

Britain’s ruling party is formulating legislation against BDS, officials said earlier this year.

Combatants claim LROR leader captured in Warshefana clashes

and two of his commanders killed, Warshefana military sources have claimed.

A deputy commander of Warshefana's Khaled Al-Abeid Martyrs' Brigade told the Libya Herald that Zawi was currently receiving treatment in Zahra following his capture. The LROR leader is said to be in a critical condition, having lost one arm in the fighting and sustained a blow to the head.

There have been unconfirmed reports from the LROR denying the capture, with some claiming Zawi left Libya two months ago. Others have said that Zawi was taken prisoner and then summarily executed by the Warfeshana forces.

Two of Zawi's commanders, Muhamed Luwai Al-Bishti and Salah Wadi were also reportedly killed in the fighting over the past two days. The Warshefana source claimed Bishti had been killed while fighting, with Wadi, who had been from Warshefana but was also a leader within the LROR's Brigade 27, dying from grave injuries in hospital.

Al-Thinni "will stay as Prime Minister" says GNC member
2014-03-18
[Libya Herald] Abdullah Al-Thinni, the current "caretaker" Prime Minister is likely to remain in post until the end of term of the General National Congress (GNC), one Congressman told the Libya Herald today.

"There are a lot of candidates for Prime Minister but because of arguments between GNC members it is not easy to agree on any one person," the Congressman said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
. "I think Thinni will remain in this position for a long time."

Thinni was sworn in as a "caretaker" Prime Minister last week after the GNC passed a vote of no-confidence on former Prime Minister Ali Zeidan
... served as a diplomat for Libya during the 1970s, serving in India under Ambassador Mohammed Magariaf. Both men defected in 1980 and went on to form the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. Zeidan spent nearly three decades in exile in Geneva after the defection. During the revolution Zeidan served as the National Transitional Council's Europe envoy, and is credited as having played a key role in persuading French President Nicolas Sarkozy to support the anti-Qadaffy forces...

Doubts still hang over the vote that ousted Zeidan, with opponents calling into question the legality of the vote.

Zeidan himself said, in a televised interview on Saturday, that the vote of no-confidence was illegal, saying that the required quorum to dismiss him was not reached. Only 113 Congress members voted in the sitting, he said, with extra votes added later.

GNC spokesperson Omar Hemeidan, however, told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the vote was legal and had been recorded. He called Zeidan's comments on TV inappropriate for a former Prime Minister.

"If Zeidan has any doubts about the decision, he can appeal it in front of the Supreme Constitutional Court," said Hemeidan. "If he does not recognise the decision he should follow the legal path instead of talking through the media".

Some members of Congress themselves are also in disagreement over the vote.

Congressman Ibrahim Abdulaziz Sahad told the Libya Herald that he had attended the sitting and confirmed that 121 GNC members voted to withdraw confidence in Zeidan. Another three members who were outside the hall then cast their votes, he said, taking the number up to 124.

Zeidan flouts travel ban and heads for Europe

left Libya last night and headed for Europe, after the General National Congress (GNC) passed a vote of no-confidence against him.

Zeidan flew first to Malta, where he spent two hours waiting for his plane to refuel, according to the Maltese press.

Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that he had briefly spoken to Zeidan who, he said, was en route to another European country.

By leaving Libya, Zeidan flouted a travel ban imposed by Attorney General Abdel Qadar Radwan. The ban, directed to the head of the Passports Agency, was issued last night. It said Zeidan was to be prevented from leaving the country until ongoing investigations into financial irregularities had been completed.

International Airport last night at 9pm. He said that authorities at the airport had been tricked into allowing the private jet to both land and depart.

"The private plane put in a call to Tripoli Air Traffic Control requesting permission to land to pick up some diplomatic persons, whose names were not given," a source said. The plane was given permission to land in a special area of the airport set aside for VIP flights, and a member of the airport's immigration staff was sent to check the passports of the diplomatic person or persons leaving, he said.

When the official arrived at the plane, however, he was apparently grabbed and held until the plane had safely taken off, the source said.

The investigations cited by the Attorney General as prompting the travel ban appear to relate to allegations that money was offered to gangs controlling three oil export terminals in the east of the country to end their blockades. Ibrahim Jadhran, the self-styled leader of the federalists occupying the ports, accused GNC Energy Committee head Naji Mukhtar and the government of trying to bribe him with LD 30 million to end the blockade in September last year.

Zeidan denied any involvement but Mukhtar admitted giving a number of cheques to one of Jadhran's brothers Salem. He said that these could not be considered bribery because the accounts held insufficient funds for them to be honoured. One cheque for LD2.5 million was, however, reportedly cashed.

Libya ex-Rebel Chief Shot Dead in Gadhafi Home Town

The local military councils, which are under the jurisdiction of the defense ministry, were set up amid lawlessness that spiraled after Qadaffy's overthrow.

Ferjani's killing is the latest to target the army, security forces, judges and other public figures, mostly in eastern Libya where the uprising took root.

Libya Denies Rumours of Impending Coup
2014-02-15
[An Nahar] Libya's government and armed forces on Friday moved to quash rumors of an impending coup after a retired general called for parliament and the government to be suspended.

In a video posted on the Internet, Khalifa Haftar announced an "initiative" under which the interim authorities would be suspended.

Both the prime minister and the head of the armed forces responded by pouring scorn on the idea of a coup d'etat.

Haftar commanded ground forces during the 2011 uprising that overthrew the 42-year dictatorship of Muammar Qadaffy
...whose instability was an inspiration to dictators everywhere, but whose end couldn't possibly happen to them...

"The command of the Libyan national army announces its initiative for a roadmap, that will be made public in the coming days" in consultation with different parties, Haftar said in the video.

The initiative foresees the suspension of the General National Congress (GNC), Libya's highest political authority, and the transitional government.

It also looks to the formation of a presidential commission headed by the president of the Higher Judicial Council.

"The Libyan national army has decided to act... not in order to govern but to prepare the proper conditions" for elections, Haftar said.

After Haftar's video was released, rumors quickly spread on social networks that a coup may be in the offing.

"It's a lie. The situation is under control and there is no suspect movement," the army chief of staff's front man Colonel Ali al-Shikhi told AFP.

Prime Minister Ali Zeidan
... served as a diplomat for Libya during the 1970s, serving in India under Ambassador Mohammed Magariaf. Both men defected in 1980 and went on to form the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. called the rumors "ridiculous", saying that Haftar "is not a member of the military".

"He was retired," Zeidan said, adding that state institutions were functioning normally.

It is not known if the former general has any support among the ranks of the army or from powerful groups of former rebels.

Analysts also said that Haftar's initiative did not amount to an attempted coup by the military.

"The army is trying to break Libya's current political deadlock but is too small and weak to be able to take over government in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and enforce its writ," said Anna Boyd, senior Middle East analyst with IHS Country Risk.

"There is no indication that the army has made any move to seize power, for instance by surrounding government buildings," she said.

"Haftar does have support from officers in eastern Libya concerned about Islamist influence inside Libya's GNC, but it is very unlikely that he speaks for the whole army."

Haftar, originally from eastern Libya where the revolt against Qadaffy erupted in February 2011, served under the strongman before defecting in the late 1980s.

He returned to join the rebels after spending more than two decades in the United States.

Kidnappers of diplomats give Egypt 24 hours to release LROR head

.

One of the kidnappers then told the presenter that their demand was the immediate release of LROR head Shaban hadia Al-Zway, who was arrested in Alexandria on Friday night. Egyptian media have said that Zway was arrested on suspicion of being affiliated with Al-Qaeda and for possession of foreign currencies, documents and CDs.

The kidnapper said that the group would give the Egyptian government twenty-four hours to release Zway, before the line went dead.

After the call, the presenter called the front man for the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdulaati, who said that Zway was being held while investigations were ongoing. "If he is found to be innocent, he will be released, otherwise he will be put on trial," Abdulaati said. "We are a country of law and we are treating him very well and with respect."

He said that the Egyptian authorities had not had any contact with the kidnappers. They were working only with the Libyan government, Abdulaati said, and had spoken to Prime Minister Ali Zeidan

Tug of War with Islamist MPs Paralyses Libya
2014-01-24
[An Nahar] A tug of war between Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan
... served as a diplomat for Libya during the 1970s, serving in India under Ambassador Mohammed Magariaf. Both men defected in 1980 and went on to form the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. and Islamist ministers threatens to further paralyze a government already weakened by growing unrest in the North African country.

The latest row erupted when the Justice and Construction Party (JCP), political arm of the Libyan branch of the Moslem BrĂĽderbund, withdrew its five ministers from Zeidan's 32-member government.

Their resignation on Tuesday in protest at persistent lawlessness in Libya since its 2011 uprising came after three weeks of wrangling over an Islamist-inspired censure motion against the premier.

But Zeidan, an independent who himself was the victim of a bungled abduction last year by ex-rebels who toppled the regime of now slain dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...The late megalomaniac dictator of Libya, admired everywhere for his garish costumes, funny hats, harem of cutie bodyguards, and incoherent ravings. As far as is known, he is the only person who's ever declared jihad on Switzerland...
, vowed to stay at his post.

The Islamists effectively failed to clinch the required 120 votes in the 194-member General National Congress (GNC) -- Libya's top political authority -- to pass the motion against Zeidan.

Ninety-nine politicians signed the motion against Zeidan, an independent who still has the backing of 94 GNC members, mostly from the liberal Alliance of National Forces.

But analysts say the vote has weakened the government and will further undermine Zeidan's powers in the future.

"Ali Zeidan... will not be able to get the backing of the National Congress for his decisions because the majority of its members are against him," said political sciences professor Khulud al-Aguili.

The dispute pitting Islamists against liberals threatens "to push the country even more into a dark tunnel," added political analyst Khaled Tajuri.

Zeidan will be put to the test in coming days when he is due to present the 2014 budget to the GNC, with analysts saying politicians could throw it out.

The prime minister is also expected to face growing hostility when he tackles a government reshuffle to replace the five Islamists who quit the lineup and other ministers.

'Revenge' or 'political diversion'?

Zeidan had promised repeatedly last summer to undertake a major government reshuffle, after the resignation of his interior minister and to replace the foreign minister who has said he wants to quit.

Now he must also fill the portfolios vacated by the Islamists -- oil, electricity, housing, economy and sport.

The Islamists are waiting for their "Dire Revenge™" and to derail his efforts when he presents the GNC with a new cabinet lineup, said Aguili.

Analyst Abdelaziz al-Sukni and former government official Mahmoud Shammam dismissed the wrangling between Zeidan and the GNC as "political diversion" aimed at bolstering the GNC's grip over Libya.
