Indian opposition politician dies
2006-05-04
A top leader of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) died on Wednesday, 11 days after his younger brother allegedly shot him over personal disputes, his party and hospital authorities said. Pramod Mahajan, a former federal telecommunications minister and high-profile general secretary of the Hindu nationalist party, was shot at his home in the financial capital of Mumbai on April 22. "He finally succumbed to the bullet injuries," said Anupam Verma, spokesman of Hinduja Hospital.
"I just got off the phone with Dr. Quincy. He sez he's had a quiet day and we can go ahead and pull the plug."
"It's about time. He's starting to stink."
Mahajan, 56, was hit by three bullets. Doctors at the Mumbai hospital had performed three surgeries to try to revive him. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
"Cheeze, Dr. Verma! You can't operate on that! It ain't even attached anymore!"
Mahajan's younger brother, Pravin, surrendered to police shortly after the shooting. Police say Pravin shot Mahajan three times because he resented the latter's success and felt ignored and humiliated by him. The younger brother's lawyer claims his client is "deranged."
Doh! We never even guessed! And it was there all the time!

‘Shot Indian politician improving but still critical’
2006-04-24
MUMBAI: A top leader of India’s opposition Hindu nationalist party who was shot and critically wounded by his brother at the weekend has improved slightly, a hospital spokesman said Sunday.
"He's not dead. Yet."
“The condition of Pramod Mahajan has slightly improved but still remains quite critical and he is on life support measures in the Intensive Care Unit,” Anupam Verma of Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital told reporters. “Mahajan showed signs of consciousness, such as moving of fingers,” he added.

The 56-year-old Mahajan, a senior general secretary of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was shot early Saturday. According to police, Mahajan’s younger brother shot him in the abdomen three times following an early morning argument. He was rushed to hospital for emergency care, with specialists discussing a possible liver transplant. Doctors said in their latest update that three bullets lodged in Mahajan’s body could not be immediately removed because of massive blood loss. The bullets “shattered the liver, the pancreas, the intestines,” they said.
"Hello?... Yes, this is Dr. Quincy... You do?... Sam! Do we have room for another stiff?... Okay. Can you keep him on life support for another 24 hours? We're kinda crowded here..."

Sanjay Nirupam Quits Shiv Sena
2005-03-10
Sanjay Nirupam, a member of India's upper house of Parliament, quit Shiv Sena yesterday after refusing to apologize to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan for alleging that Mahajan was involved in the Reliance shares scam. According to Shiv Sena sources, Nirupam was ordered to resign by party chief Bal Thackery, following protest from the BJP, a Shiv Sena ally. Nirupam stood his ground and accepted that there had been serious differences between him and Mahajan over the involvement of him and his family members in the Reliance shares scam. "Yes, I said that there cannot be two sets of law in the country, and that I had demanded in a statement that a thorough investigation be made into Mahajan's role in the scam," Nirupam said. A defiant Nirupam said that there was no question of his apologizing to Mahajan or the BJP, and he was quitting the party because Thackeray had asked him to.

Indo troops will remain on Pak border
2002-01-20
  • India asserted its troops will remain on Pakistan's border until it has extradited 20 alleged fugitives, and rejected as non-serious a similar counter-demand made by Islamabad to the government in New Delhi. The strongly worded statement came from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan. "Pakistan, even as a joke, had never made an allegation that India was sponsoring cross-border terrorism. So how can we take this seriously?" Mahajan said of Sattar's weekend announcement.
Closing down the Bad Guys and arresting the worst of them is a good first step. Give him a chance to come through with some more.
