Jihadists Launch Deadly Attack On Russian Airbase On Syria's Coast |
2025-05-24 |
(ZeroHedge] In another clear indicator of just how drastically everything has changed in Syria in the wake of Bashar al-Assad's ouster in December last year, a militant group attempted to storm Russia's Hmeimim air base on Syria’s coast on Wednesday. Already the future of the base is uncertain, but Russia has still been maintaining it - given also Hmeimim is Moscow's only airbase on the Mediterranean. "Militants attacked a Russian air base in Syria, killing two soldiers, a Syrian government official and a local activist said Wednesday," according to The Associated Press. Russian statements, which offered little detail, did not indicate if the slain were Russian soldiers or possibly foreign nationals who were contractors. At least two militants were killed during their assault on the airbase. They are being widely reported as foreign Islamist fighters affiliated with the new Syrian government's military under President Sharaa (Jolani). The Jolani/HTS government has tried to distance itself from the attack, as it is still seeking diplomatic normalization with Russia and a reset in relations: The government official said the two militants who were killed were foreign nationals who had worked as military trainers at a naval college that was training members of the new government’s military. He said they had acted on their own in attacking the base and were not officially affiliated with any faction. Damascus has on Thursday deployed additional forces in an effort to stabilize the security situation in villages near the airbase. "The city of Jableh and the villages surrounding the Russian Hmeimim air base in the Jableh countryside are witnessing a security alert. Heavy deployment of public security forces has been observed in the villages of Al-Sharashir and Al-Qubaisa, both close to the base," the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) says. SOHR had further described "clashes in which medium and heavy machine guns were used, coinciding with the sounding of alarm sirens inside the base" - when the incident unfolded. One regional outlet has said Russian soldiers were killed, and that it was Uzbek terrorists behind the assault: According to a report by the Erem outlet, the 20 May attack resulted in the killing of three Russian soldiers and the injury of at least six others. The report says the attack was carried out by an Uzbek-led faction, which afterwards began to mobilize in the village of Al-Sharashir, just two kilometers from the base.
This coastal area near Latakia has for months seen attacks and massacres conducted by Islamic militant factions against the minority Alawite community of Syria. Christians and Druze have also been targeted. Thousands of Alawites have been reported killed, and while the Jolani government has formally condemned the killings, eyewitnesses have consistently said the attacks had the involvement of HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) fighters, which remains the ruling faction in Damascus. During the height of the sectarian killings, Alawite families sought refuge at Hmeimim air base in large numbers. Many thousands have been camped out on the base tarmac, with at times Russian troops seen handing out food and water and necessities of survival. Back in March, Alawites expressed their distrust of HTS provided "security"... HTS AlQaeda reps try to convince Syrian Alawi refugees to leave the Russian Hmeimim air base and go home. "Trust us now, mistakes happen, things got out of control". pic.twitter.com/JIpzSHpAB0 — tim anderson (@timand2037) March 18, 2025 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier this week expressed particular concern about the chaotic situation in Syria, where he said extremist militant groups are carrying out "real ethnic cleansing and mass killings based on ethnic and sectarian identity". He blasted what he called the West’s "stunning" indifference to mass killings acts of terrorism. The strong comments followed in the wake of President Trump meeting with Syria's Sharaa while in Saudi Arabia earlier this month. This stunned even some Washington officials, given that Sharaa/Jolani has long been a US-designated terrorist. Trump has said he wants to give Syria a fresh start, and also announced the US will drop sanctions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week told a Senate hearing that Syria could collapse within just weeks; however, he didn't acknowledge in the testimony that it was the CIA's Operation Timber Sycamore which served to weaken and destabilize the country in the first place. Lessons for the West and Kyiv: Don't forget that Russia can fight for a long time |
2025-05-20 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. by Dmitry Gubin [REGNUM] Our side has already outlined the main "positional points" following the direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations held on May 16 — the first in almost three years. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov pointed this out on May 19. The start of the negotiations marked changes in the "chess game" of the conflict. The Kiev regime has played to a clearly worse position compared to March 2022. ![]() On this occasion, the head of our delegation, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, gave a blitz lecture on air on Russia 24, citing, as a historian, analogies from the past and, as a politician, parallels with the current negotiations. LESSON 1: THE WEST, BY DISRUPTING NEGOTIATIONS, HARMS ITSELF The first historical analogy is with the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. “There were many Russo-Turkish wars, and as a result of one of these wars, which was caused by a major conflict in the Balkans – this was in the 1870s – we, in principle, came to an agreement with Turkey,” Medinsky noted. We remember from our school history course that Russia then helped the Balkan countries – Serbia, Montenegro, Romania – gain complete independence from the Turks and Bulgaria, which gained autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. Less well known is the diplomatic postscript to the exploits of Russian soldiers in Plevna and Shipka, the storming of Kars and the defense of Bayazet. On March 3, 1878, bilateral agreements between Russia and Turkey were concluded in San Stefano, a suburb of Istanbul. San Stefano, occupied by Russian troops, was not chosen by chance. The head of our delegation, Count Nikolai Ignatiev, wrote: “A wonderful place on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, there we will be the same as in Constantinople, and the English (who “demonstrated” their squadron. — Ed.) will have nothing to find fault with.” According to the treaty, the Ottomans agreed to transfer Macedonia, part of eastern Thrace and access to the Aegean Sea to the newly formed Bulgarian Principality. The territory of Serbia and Montenegro, allied with Russia, was increased, and Bosnia received autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. But “our Western partners” decided to devalue the results of the Istanbul negotiations of 1878. If in 2022 the Istanbul agreements were nullified by Boris Johnson, who persuaded Kiev to fight until “victory on the battlefield”, then almost 150 years ago this role was played by diplomats from Germany and Austria-Hungary - behind whom loomed the same Britain. In May–June 1878, the British signed two treaties: with the Turks (the Ottomans gave Cyprus to the British, and London promised to defend its borders in Asia by “force of arms” in the event of Russian encroachment) and with the Austrians on a common line of conduct. At the initiative of the Western powers, the Berlin Congress was convened. At these multilateral negotiations, Russia was forced to revise the Treaty of San Stefano. Russia returned the fortress of Bayazet to Turkey, the territory of Bulgaria was cut in half and divided into two parts with different levels of dependence on the Ottoman Sultan. Macedonia (which the Bulgarians considered historically theirs) was left with the Turks, part of the Bulgarian acquisitions were transferred to Serbia, and Bosnia, populated largely by Orthodox Serbs, was “gifted” to Catholic Austria-Hungary. It seemed that the goal had been achieved - the West “curtailed Russian appetites” and did not allow the new Balkan states to be turned into our satellites. "What did the West's 'improvement' of the bilateral agreements that had been reached lead to? Because then there were new Balkan wars, in 1912-1913. And ultimately, due to the unresolved problems in the Balkans, the First World War broke out," Medinsky notes. Let us explain: during the first, unexpectedly bloody Balkan War, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and the Macedonian rebels fought Turkey, which was “left too much” at the Berlin Congress. Bulgaria emerged victorious, and was immediately torn apart by its neighbors: Serbia, Greece, Romania and the same Türkiye. At the same time, the Bosnian issue fueled Serbia's hatred of Austria-Hungary, which resulted in "the most effective terrorist act in history" - the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The First World War, provoked by this shot, ended, among other things, with the death of the German and Austro-Hungarian empires - the two powers that guaranteed the Berlin Congress. And the British Empire also emerged from the war rather battered - especially if you consider that the First World War made the Second World War inevitable. Trying to dig a hole for Russia, which in 1878 almost reached an agreement with Turkey, the West dug one for itself. Another example close to the Istanbul-2022 and Istanbul-2025 incidents is the history of the Soviet-Finnish War. As historians point out (Medinsky in the interview is no exception), Joseph Stalin offered Finland a truce in the early stages of the war. Let us add that before the start of hostilities, the Soviet leader offered the Finns a mutually beneficial compromise. Here we can draw a parallel with the compromises regarding security in Eastern Europe that Moscow offered the West in 2022, before the start of the Central Military District. "Since Leningrad cannot be moved, we ask that the border be 70 kilometers from Leningrad... We ask for 2,700 square kilometers," Stalin addressed the Finnish side. But the latter, feeling the support of Britain and France, stood its ground - just as the Kiev regime stood its ground on the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO and the return of the republic's nuclear status. In parallel with the battles at the front, " Stalin offers Finland a truce, that is, peace," Medinsky noted. But the Finns refused, because they were inspired by London and Paris. In France - as now, during the time of Emmanuel Macron - they began to threaten to introduce "peacekeepers" and even demonstratively began to assemble a volunteer expeditionary corps. Britain began to concentrate long-range bombers in Iraq (then a mandated territory), capable of flying to the Baku oil fields. But no "volunteers" came to help Finland - the Suomi authorities were unable to fight "to the last Finn" on their own, and on March 12, 1940, the Moscow Treaty was signed. The Finns recognized Soviet claims on the Karelian Isthmus and moved the border without any compensation from the Soviet Union. Britain and France, by inciting the Finns against the USSR and disrupting the negotiation process, did not win at all. It was not they, but Hitler who received another ally in Marshal Mannerheim. The Third Reich had enough forces and resources in the West both to defeat France and to wage war with Britain. Will the current leaders of the West, who are eager to become a third party in hypothetical negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv (and achieve an agreement that is advantageous to them and disadvantageous to us), learn historical lessons? LESSON 2: RUSSIA CAN PLAY THE LONG GAME AND GET WHAT IT WANTS However, it seems that Europe has a poor memory (or pretends to have a poor memory) of the history of the Napoleonic wars that ploughed up this continent in 1803-1815. Now the West and its Kyiv "clients" are taking the position of first stopping the fighting, a truce, and then negotiations. French President Macron, in particular, demanded a 30-day halt to the fighting. His more successful predecessor, Emperor Napoleon, acted differently: the Peace of Tilsit of 1807 (or rather, two peace treaties between France and Russia and Prussia) was preceded by negotiations between Paris and St. Petersburg and Vienna. And these negotiations, we note, were conducted against the backdrop of battles between Napoleon's army and the troops of the 4th anti-French coalition. There was no "ceasefire" until Tilsit. But the Napoleonic wars should be remembered not only as an example of how negotiations are conducted, but also for another reason. After the defeat at Austerlitz (which was a failure for our army as well) and the defeat of the Prussians and Russians at Friedland, after the forced diplomatic maneuver at Tilsit, there was the undermining of the power of Napoleon's great army in the Battle of Borodino. And then - the defeat of the French at Berezina, the Foreign Campaign of 1813-14 and the triumphal entry of Russian troops into Paris. Which was followed by the establishment of the post-Napoleonic order in Europe, where Russia played no small role. This is an example of how Russia can and does play the long game, achieving its goals after military failures and political compromises. In this sense, an even more striking example, which Medinsky also cited, is the Northern War of 1700–1721 “with Sweden, after which Sweden forever lost its status as a great power, and the Russian Empire became a great power.” Russia, under the leadership of Peter the Great, was returning its previously lost historical lands in this war — access to the Baltic Sea, which was taken from our country by the "advanced European power" Sweden during the time of Ivan the Terrible and later, during the Time of Troubles. As a result of the battles, our new (and in fact, returned to the Russian state) territories became the "Izhora and Korelskaya provinces". A new capital appeared on the ancient Izhora land, which was still owned by Veliky Novgorod — St. Petersburg. And here an important historical parallel appears: simultaneously with the military actions, but without interrupting them, Peter I offered Charles XII a compromise option: Sweden would agree to the transfer of Ingria, that is, the lands around St. Petersburg, to the Russians, and would retain the Baltics for itself. But Charles preferred to “defeat Russia on the battlefield” and fight for the borders of 1700. "Charles XII continues his insane war, despite Peter's repeated peace proposals. But the funniest thing is, who do you think supported Charles XII? England and France. They endlessly finance Sweden," scientist and politician Medinsky drew a historical parallel. But Charles did not take into account the main thing - the ability of Peter and his army, which had modernized during the war, to wage a battle of attrition and over large territories. The war was fought in the Ostsee (Baltic) provinces of Sweden, and on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and in Little Russia. The defeat of the main Swedish land forces near Poltava occurred on July 8 (1709 according to the new style), the "zeroing" of the Swedish fleet at Gangut - on August 7, 1714. And for almost seven more years the Russian army exhausted and finished off the enemy. As a result of the Treaty of Nystad concluded in 1721, Sweden lost much more than it could have conceded if it had not listened to London and Paris and come to its senses earlier. The successor of Charles XII, who died in 1718, Queen Ulrika Eleonora was forced to admit the loss of Ingria, Estonia with Reval (Tallinn), Livonia with Riga and Old Finland, that is, Eastern Karelia. Sweden forever lost its role as the hegemon of the Baltic and a first-rank European power. And after two unsuccessful attempts to play a rematch with Russia (1788–90 and 1808–09), these “descendants of the Varangians” ceased to pose a threat to our country and to Europe. Russia has been among the great powers since 1721 until now. The Swedes had enough historical memory from the beginning of the 19th century until the 2020s, when the country decided to join the anti-Russian alliance again, this time NATO. At the same time, Kiev preferred to forget how Sweden's client, Hetman Ivan Mazepa, ended his life. But in Russia they remember the lessons of history: including the fact that the 21-year war that Russia went through from the “confusion” near Narva to the Poltava “victory” and the political victory in Nystadt was not in vain. |

Draw with a taste of victory. Pakistan fought off India with Chinese weapons

Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. by Kirill Semenov [REGNUM] The escalation of the Indian-Pakistani standoff, caused by a series of border clashes, was temporarily halted by a ceasefire agreement on May 10. This provides an opportunity to sum up the preliminary results of the standoff. ![]() Despite mutual accusations of violations, the parties have refrained from previous large-scale actions, which allows us to talk about the preservation of a truce, albeit fragile for now. REASONS FOR ESCALATION The standoff between India and Pakistan, which began after the partition of British India in 1947, has resulted in four major wars (1947–48, 1965, 1971, 1999) and hundreds of border incidents. Kashmir remains the main bone of contention: both countries control parts of the region, considering it their own. According to various sources, since 1989 alone, the low-intensity conflict has claimed between 47,000 and 70,000 lives. The latest wave of tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad began after an April 22 attack on the mountain resort of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir. The attack, for which a previously unknown group called the Kashmir Resistance Front claimed responsibility, killed 26 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims. Survivors reported that the attackers deliberately questioned the victims about their religious affiliation before the shooting, which, although it points to an obvious “jihadist” trace, does not rule out a deliberate provocation. However, India, without waiting for the investigation to be completed, accused Pakistan of supporting the militants, which Islamabad categorically denied. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has escalated tensions with Pakistan to shore up his domestic political position, which was undermined by the 2024 elections, when his Hindu nationalist party posted its worst result since 2009. New Delhi launched Operation Sindoor, a series of strikes on targets in Pakistani territory that it described as “terrorist infrastructure.” Islamabad responded with its own Operation Buniyas al-Marsoos, which hit a number of Indian military bases. More than 60 people, including civilians, have been killed on both sides in five days of clashes, marking the worst flare-up since 2019, when India's abrogation of Kashmir's special status nearly led to a full-scale war. Experts say that the current escalation is characterized by the unprecedentedly large-scale use of artillery and drones, as well as the largest air battles since 1971, which increased the risk of mistakes and further escalation of the crisis, including an exchange of nuclear strikes. But the parties had enough willpower not to slide into the funnel of uncontrolled escalation and stopped at the red line. REASONS FOR PAKISTAN'S SUCCESS However, it is Pakistan that has emerged from the current stage of the conflict with a number of tactical and strategic advantages.
New Delhi's military actions, launched without any evidence of Islamabad's involvement in the terrorist attack, were perceived by Pakistanis as an act of blatant aggression and caused a wave of patriotism. At the same time, India, having a multiple military advantage, was unable to use it within the framework of limited tactical operations, while Islamabad was prepared for a balanced and effective response. Balanced enough not to lead to a full-scale war, but effective enough to force New Delhi to recognize the futility of continuing actions that only bring reputational losses, demonstrating the tactical weakness and vulnerability of the Indian armed forces. Clearly, Pakistan was able to learn from past mistakes, while India was confident of its advantage, which New Delhi was unable to exploit in a limited conflict. And the Indian leadership considered the transition to a full-scale war too risky due to the threat of the confrontation escalating into a nuclear one. PAKISTAN'S PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE DOCTRINE At the same time, India understood that Pakistan would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons. It could even be preventive, since Islamabad is ready to use them first, considering tactical nuclear weapons, among other things, as a key tool for disrupting a potential Indian invasion. And especially as a response to the “cold start” doctrine, in which a rapid offensive is carried out before the enemy is mobilized. Pakistan's short-range nuclear-tipped Nasr missiles, with a range of 60km, are designed to destroy armoured convoys in border areas to prevent a breakthrough. The strategy, Islamabad says, is aimed at “escalation to de-escalate” – stopping aggression with a local strike to avoid a full-scale war. There are several other scenarios that would activate the “inevitable nuclear retaliation” algorithm from Islamabad. For example, nuclear weapons could be used to prevent the Indian Armed Forces from invading vital areas of the country, which would threaten the very existence of Pakistan. Such areas include, for example, the Indus Valley. Nuclear weapons could be used to destroy a significant part of Pakistan's military potential, such as the Air Force, and even in the event of a naval and economic blockade that threatens to leave the Pakistani army without fuel. It is clear that such a blurring of the “nuclear threshold” and the placement of tactical charges close to the front line increases the risk of accidental escalation due to errors in threat assessment or loss of control over the arsenal. That is why such close attention is focused on any Indo-Pakistani escalation, which could quickly escalate into a nuclear conflict at any moment. WORLD PREMIERE OF CHINESE WEAPONS At the same time, it is now also obvious that another deterrent factor, in addition to nuclear weapons, for New Delhi has become Islamabad’s skillful use of modern Chinese conventional weapons. It had finally made its presence felt on the battlefield, and it promised the Indian army serious losses if the conflict continued. And even if it ended with a hypothetical overall success, India would be too vulnerable to China after the confrontation, given the losses it had suffered. Pakistan, traditionally the main operator of Chinese military equipment in the world, has demonstrated that even in conditions of intense combat, equipment from China is not inferior, and in some respects superior to systems developed in the United States and Europe. It should be noted that the key advantage of Chinese weapons remains their availability. For example, the JF-17 Thunder multirole fighters, jointly developed by China and Pakistan, are several times cheaper than the American F-16. At the same time, they demonstrate comparable characteristics in maneuverability, radar equipment and weapons. In addition to the JF-17, the Pakistani Air Force also used the heavier Chinese J-10C fighters, using them successfully in combat for the first time. Developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, these aircraft are equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and are capable of carrying PL-15 missiles with a range of up to 200-300 km. During a major air battle on May 7 involving up to 125 fighters from both sides, the J-10Cs demonstrated superiority over India's French-made Rafale jets armed with Meteor missiles. The J-10C's key advantage is its combination of maneuverability, electronics, and weapons. Experts compare it to later F-16 variants, noting that the Chinese fighter is capable of operating effectively in close combat as well as at long ranges thanks to its PL-15 missiles. Unlike the Rafale, which was positioned as a multi-role fighter with unique Meteor missiles (range up to 200 km), the J-10C was able to implement the “first strike” tactic, remaining outside the enemy’s engagement zone. India, which had relied on French fighters, ran into unexpected problems. According to Pakistani sources, three of them were shot down during the battle. US intelligence indirectly confirmed these losses, which was the first documented case of a Rafale being destroyed in high-intensity combat. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the Rafale was “overrated” and the Indian Air Force demonstrated “incompetence.” This dealt a blow to the image of not only France but also other Western manufacturers. A similar situation is observed in the UAV sphere: Chinese Wing Loong II drones, actively used by Pakistan for reconnaissance and precision strikes, are close in efficiency to the American MQ-9 Reaper, but their cost is 30–40% lower. The conflict also saw the use of Chinese HQ-9 anti-aircraft missile systems, which successfully intercepted modern aircraft. China's electronic warfare and cyber defense systems have been effective in suppressing enemy attempts to destabilize communications, according to analysts, putting them on par with developments by companies like Raytheon or Lockheed Martin. Thus, the Indo-Pakistani standoff has become further evidence that the Chinese military-industrial complex has not only caught up with the West in key areas, but has also created a new reality where price is no longer synonymous with quality. This opens the door for Beijing to leadership in the 21st century, forcing even traditional US allies to reconsider their approaches to security. The success of Chinese technology has already been reflected in financial markets: shares of Chengdu Aircraft Company rose by 30% after the fighting. AMERICA TAKES THE LAURELS The conflict between Pakistan and India has clearly not gone according to the scenario expected by the forces interested in a moderate escalation. This is especially true for the Donald Trump administration, which probably saw it as an opportunity to inflict a reputational defeat on Beijing through the political “humiliation” of its main ally, Islamabad. In this context, it can be said that Washington was interested in New Delhi’s military success. However, it later became clear that it would not be possible to give Beijing a pat on the back, and Washington abandoned non-intervention. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the United States, along with other countries, had begun pressuring New Delhi and Islamabad, and that talks involving Vice President J.D. Vance had reportedly led to an agreement on an immediate ceasefire. However, many experts familiar with the situation believe that the role of American diplomacy in resolving the current escalation is greatly exaggerated. Washington has decided to take credit for the peacekeeping role, while the contribution of the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which are strategic partners for both Pakistan and India, has been much greater. But China and Russia also had a major impact on the dynamics of the conflict, speeding its resolution. Beijing, an ally of Islamabad, not only called for restraint but also put pressure on both sides, as did Russia, which offered to act as a neutral mediator. RUSSIA BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN It is significant that Moscow, once a consistent partner of New Delhi, is now pursuing a multi-vector policy in the region and hedging risks. The United States and India, together with Australia and Japan, conduct annual Malabar naval exercises and form the QUAD coalition with a clearly anti-Chinese focus, while also developing other areas of military-political and military-technical cooperation. Against this backdrop, Russia is strengthening its ties with Pakistan. In 2020 and 2021, Moscow and Islamabad held joint anti-terrorism exercises called “Friendship.” In 2021, the first-ever Russian-Pakistani naval exercises, “Maritime Interaction,” took place in the Arabian Sea. And last March, the navies of the two countries organized the PASSEX maneuvers, which included practicing anti-submarine operations. An important area remains cooperation within the SCO: in 2023, joint exercises “Peace Mission” in Kazakhstan brought together the military of Russia, Pakistan and China. At the same time, Russia continues to develop a strategic partnership with India. Trade turnover with Delhi reached $70 billion in 2024, while with Pakistan it was only $1 billion. India also remains the largest importer of Russian weapons: recently, it received batches of Su-30MKI fighters, S-300/400 anti-aircraft systems and T-90 tanks. Therefore, it is probably most important for the Russian Federation to achieve long-term peace between New Delhi and Islamabad. Since their contradictions, superimposed on the conflicts of interests of India and China, are also an obstacle to the formation of closer interaction in the Russia-India-China triangle and the alliances based on these countries: BRICS and the SCO. CONSEQUENCES AND PROSPECTS While the current ceasefire has reduced the immediate threat of war, fundamental differences remain unresolved. A peaceful settlement requires not only international mediation, but also the willingness of the parties to compromise, which seems unlikely in the current political realities. In particular, the policy of the Indian authorities, who advocate Hindu religious nationalism, does not contribute to de-escalation. This has led to constant pressure on India's 200 million-strong Muslim minority, which has increasingly been subjected to discriminatory measures and practices, including mass Muslim pogroms, such as in Delhi in 2020, when dozens of Muslims were killed. This provokes the growth of radicalism and the acceleration of the formation of a resistance movement in the Indian Islamic environment. But the Indian authorities are inclined to see in all manifestations of radicalism not their own mistakes, but the hand of Pakistan. On the other hand, Islamabad indeed often turns a blind eye to the presence on its territory of bases of various rebel factions, including jihadist ones, acting under the banner of the struggle for the liberation of Kashmir or, in general, Indian Muslims from Indian rule. It is obvious that maintaining tension in the Indian part of Kashmir is in the interests of Pakistani special services. In case of conflict, this will allow them to ignite a mass uprising in the rear of Indian troops. Therefore, New Delhi's claims cannot be called unfounded. The key to a long-term settlement probably lies in re-establishing channels of communication between India and Pakistan. But it is precisely terrorist attacks that rupture such channels, as was the case after the Mumbai attack in 2008 or the Puluam attack in 2019. Overall, the tangle of Indo-Pakistani contradictions seems insoluble in the foreseeable future and will constantly make itself felt. And peace initiatives, such as the 1999 Delhi-Lahore Declaration, regularly fail due to lack of trust. However, the current pause offers a chance to tone down the rhetoric and begin targeted humanitarian exchanges. This may be the only way to avoid a new war in the Himalayan valleys. At least there are positive examples: the ceasefire agreement concluded in 2003 lasted almost five years. Therefore, the main task now is to make the pauses between escalations as long as possible, and the escalations themselves quickly relieved.

Priest from Sudzha: A thousand people were burned alive in our temple |
2025-05-13 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. by Marina Akhmedova [REGNUM] In the most desperate hours of August 2024, when Sudzha was being captured by the enemy army, many people showed themselves to be absolutely heroic, evacuating the townspeople and - under shelling and explosions - returning for more. ![]() One of the first and most fearless rescuers was the rector of the Trinity Church, Fr. Evgeny (Shestopalov). At first, he hid the children in the church, then tirelessly took them to safe places. Some of Fr. Evgeny's parishioners are no longer alive. Father Evgeny told the editor-in-chief of the Regnum news agency Marina Akhmedova about his experiences - and how he tried to explain everything that happened to himself. How did people behave during the occupation? Why is it easier for a believer to survive in extreme conditions? How can one rid the soul of hatred? And what is it like to serve in a church, in the basement of which are the remains of several hundred victims of a terrible war? NOT FEAR, BUT BEWILDERMENT — Friends, good afternoon. Today we are finally visiting the priest whom I have been wanting to visit since August of last summer. But it was impossible because he was in Sudzha during the Ukrainian Armed Forces offensive. This is Father Evgeny, the rector of the Trinity Church in Sudzha. Father Evgeny, I have the simplest questions. How did the offensive begin for you? — I’ll tell you the main things. At three o’clock in the morning, between five and six, a siren sounded. Although we had long been accustomed to the sounds of sirens, explosions, drones flying overhead, we immediately woke up with the feeling that something was wrong. Four houses burned down in June — it was, apparently, a test run. And indeed, the attacks began right around the temple. At about six in the morning, we went out, the children with me. We looked at the destroyed houses near the sanitary and epidemiological station, talked to the neighbors. And we decided to take a broom and sweep the street. Because everything was covered, it was impossible to drive a car: glass, nails, boards, stones. And we had such a good intention: to sweep the street. — To leave? — No, just to restore order. No one was going to leave. I got in the car and drove around the city. We saw that the court was destroyed, the prosecutor's office was hit directly. The National Guard was burning. An apartment building on our square… — What does a person feel who has lived his whole life in his city and has seen this? — There was misunderstanding, honestly. There was no fear. There was bewilderment and a premonition of something very bad. And when we started taking children from the neighborhood, I realized that there were no options: we had to open a church. My church is old, from 1812. The walls are massive, the vaults are powerful. - Why not run away? — We thought it would all pass right now. Well, two or three hours, maybe a day or two. But we had a premonition that it was not without reason. There had never been such a massive shelling. Fourteen hours of non-stop artillery and mortar work. We heard the takeoff and then, two or three seconds later, the landing. We climbed the bell tower, tried to find a connection. There was no water, gas, electricity. I jumped out, drove to Soldatskoye, bought bread, water, came back, gave it to people. Then I realized that I had to leave. And on the seventh we began to evacuate people. — Why didn’t you go yourself? — The task was to save children, invalids, old people who were hiding in my church. Their houses were already burning there in Zaoleshenka. — And did you record a video then? — Yes, I recorded a video. I posted it later, in my group, when I climbed the hill and there was a connection, out of a desire to warn people, to tell them that everything is really scary, and that we have a place where they can save themselves. There were only 200 people in my group. These are my city parishioners. It so happened that the video spread and I was seen everywhere, all over Russia. But that's not the point. Hiding in the temple was no longer safe. We spent the night, cooked on a fire. We fed everyone. I went to Soldatskoye several times, and that's where I sent it from. I just didn't know that the video wouldn't reach anyone, because there was no connection in all of Sudzha. And my group only included Sudzhans. And the people who saw this video were those who had already left Sudzha. Well, that's good. They should have known what was going on. And as soon as I showed up at Bolshoy Soldatskoye, the calls started: Father, take those away, help these leave. Addresses started coming in, hundreds of addresses - who stayed where. Parents, grandfathers, grandmothers, some grandmothers with children. It was impossible to read, to perceive, to comprehend. I realized: the scale of the tragedy was such that the whole world would now know about Sudzha. I was returning closer to evening, taking people away - everyone we could take out of the temple, we took out. The guys from the Patriot center helped us, the head of the city Vitaly Slashchev took the children out in his car. Many people had the opportunity and courage to go, they also picked up and took out. There were many people, well, and we were among them. HEART ATTACK ON LEGS — And when you received these hundreds of requests, you didn’t say to yourself: this is too much, I’m just a human being, I can’t handle this. I have to leave myself… — It was a shame to refuse. - And in front of whom? - In front of people. They saw me as the only way to connect. — And why did they see salvation in the priest? — Probably because I was returning. And on the 7th, when I was driving from Bolshoe Soldatskoe around five o’clock, I came across an armored personnel carrier with ten Ukrainian servicemen with blue armbands on their sleeves. We just met eyes like that. And I realized that the enemy had already completely occupied the entire city. That was August 7th. — How did you perceive these people? — It was fine. They met us at the dam with machine guns, they jumped out of the bushes so rudely. I explain: I am a priest, although I am sitting in a T-shirt, imagine, it is hot. I am leading parishioners out of Sudzha. They swore, threatened that if they saw us again they would shoot us, all obscenities. But they let us go, they did nothing. That is, probably, some people still had something human. - And when was there no longer anything human? — We saw the consequences. Burnt cars, people shot on the road, soldiers killed in cars. Here, very young boys. Well, for example, here is a situation. It was a second, a split second: from the side of the road we saw just legs, children's, in tights. It was a girl. I can't say for sure, because in those moments and even now a lot of things are remembered as if in a fog. — And you didn’t complain then? - I grumbled. What are you talking about? I grumbled at the government, at the army, I swore at everyone. — And what about God? - No, I didn't complain about God. Somehow that didn't happen. — And how did you explain to yourself these little children’s legs in tights? — I was even afraid to think about it. Yes, I probably had a heart attack on my feet somewhere around those days. Apparently, adrenaline, a feeling of fear and the state you are in, it somehow played a role. I didn’t even notice that I had a heart attack. - Look, we are sitting here, it seems to me that nothing could be more beautiful than this spring blossoming, the trees are just beginning to blossom. And in this world, on the side of the road, there are children's legs in tights. How can all this be brought together? — In soul. I think we were all given this test. Everyone. We didn’t understand it right away. There were a lot of questions, especially from people, well, not close to the church. One, just one question: why? Why? Children, old people, women, who certainly didn’t fight with anyone, who may have relatives somewhere in Ukraine. They probably even have some connections, because we live in the border zone. Why? We couldn’t find answers then. God thinks differently than we do. — Do you think there will ever be an answer? - Well, I probably found it. Apparently, because of our sins. So that we would understand differently where we live... One person from Sudzha said wonderful words: "We are the happiest people. We now have only what we are given. Because everything we had, the Lord took from us. And we must get used to it." And he didn't just take away material things - he simply took out the soul. Because the Motherland is not a house, not a garden, not a farm that you are used to. You understand, it is much more. It is people, atmosphere, relationships. I have never seen a better place than Sudzha, I simply have not seen one. I am not from Sudzha. I was born in the North Caucasus and grew up in the city of Kurchatov. From there I joined the army. Worked at a nuclear power plant. And from there I entered the university. And only then did I end up in Sudzha. But for me, this is my homeland. Our great actor Yevgeny Leonov once said some wonderful, simple to the point of ugliness words about the homeland as the unity of the people. If very different people strive for unity, they are invincible. Maybe I am taking it out of context, but that is how I remember it. And here it is indeed. We meet Sudzhans in Kursk, with whom in Sudzha, perhaps, we would not have greeted. And here we hug each other, cry. - And Sudzha is dear to everyone. — To the question "For what?" My first thought as a believer: for sins. We have sinned before God somewhere. That's one. And secondly, we have stopped appreciating what the Lord has given us. I speak for myself, I can't speak for everyone. Deaths are in God's hands. We will never understand this. God thinks differently than we do. Maybe he protected our relatives and friends who died in Sudzha from some sins. Although good, wonderful people, believers, died. The same Slavik Kazak, the same Yura, a former Makhnovist, a villager, who came to my church. I can name many people. The same boys who lived next to us, Sasha, Vanya, Maxim. — Why did they die? - They were simply shot. Some for breaking curfew, some for something else. ON EARTHLY AND DIVINE JUSTICE — This is the moment of faith, which is quite difficult to understand… There is a parable about Job, from whom the Lord took everything, and then rewarded him with everything. But how? You can return the land, wealth, home. But children? To replace children with others, some people with others, I could never understand that. — You know, God is unfair. He has no justice. Justice is purely human, invented by people. Let us recall the parable of the workers. People who endured the heat and toil and labor all day received as much as a man who came and worked for one hour. Yes, the Lord rewarded everyone equally. And then those people who worked all day were indignant and asked: “Lord, why is this so?” And God says: “I want it this way.” Where is justice? It is God's will. He decided so. And with time we may understand something for ourselves, why he decided so. Why we, in particular, lived through all this, endured it. Maybe Sudzhi has some future purpose that we don't know yet. And again, when I say that God is unfair, I know what I am talking about. God's will is not always accessible to human understanding. How God thinks, we really don't know. That's why faith is needed. — And love? — I love God. I know that everything, sooner or later, is for our good. We won’t understand it now. - At that moment, of course, I didn’t understand it either. When you were hiding, when Slavik and Sashka were shot… - No, we cried, worried, were angry, indignant. But no one complained about God. Not even my loved ones. We were offended by our army, which for some reason withdrew its troops from Sudzha. There was no one to protect us. There were boys on the border, against whom there were several brigades of well-armed enemies. They simply crushed all defenses, which in fact did not exist. We understand that the Lord does not send us trials beyond our strength. But at the time, it didn't seem that way to us, to me for example. In some places it was scary, excuse me, to the point of shitting - from these sounds, from the whistle of shrapnel. From the sight of tanks we drove past, from enemies with blue armbands. I didn't see their faces, because everything was erased, everything was kind of blurred. There was a situation when in the last days we were returning to Sudzha through Makhnovka. It was either August 11 or 12 already. Our helicopter tried to stop us - to warn us that we should not go there. It hovered above us and released heat charges above us. Do you know how scary it was! We even saw the pilots' faces... But we went anyway. — But is there some kind of presence of God in this? It’s scary, you can’t go back there, and the body may not obey: the will is embedded inside. — Well, who did we rely on when we were driving back every day? We were returning late at night, because we were trying to take the last people not just to the point where they were picked up, but to take them to Kursk, and, well, deliver them to their loved ones. We went to bed late. In the morning we woke up, drank coffee, got in, filled up the car, and drove back again. - This cannot be explained rationally in any way. Only by this manifestation of God in man. — Yes, you overcome yourself. You understand, you think, well, that's it. Family and friends are here. The worst thing that could happen has already happened. We already have everything: there is no city, there is nothing. But there are people we can help. So, we have to go. Well, that's it. You overcome yourself, and then the fear disappears. When you are already in the city, some kind of unhealthy, I would even say, excitement appears. Probably adrenaline, the effect of this hormone. NARROWING OF SPACE — And how did the space feel? Here is the garden where we are now sitting quietly. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming — a real blessing. But if we imagine that the enemy is approaching: the picture is completely different. We will perceive both the sun and the flowers differently. Does the space change? — It changes a lot. It narrows in the literal sense. You don’t pay attention to anything: here is the target, you are flying towards it, a turn here, a turn there. God has no space, no time. And I’ll tell you straight: someone must have been leading us, leading us right there. We stopped exactly one and a half meters from the mines. We drove past the tanks. The military told us: don’t even think about driving, equipment just fired at us. And then the soldier looked at us like this: aren’t you a priest? Then drive. Pray, he said, and drive. - Our little soldier? - Ours. They say: we are leaving our positions, we were ordered to retreat. They were driving back, and we were driving there to jump out into the city. The guys from the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade forbade us to go. They said: guys, well, you won’t get through, they’ll just shoot you. We went along a different road, and there were tanks here. We drove past them, thank God. And when Natalya Mikhailovna and I jumped out of Makhnovka, and a column of these enemies came towards us. So leisurely, they weren’t afraid of anything! They felt like they were at home. These machine guns were on top. There were probably six cars. And we were this little box, a black car in an open field. Now he’ll turn around, give a burst, there’ll be nothing left of us… Natalya Mikhailovna sits and says: yes, I’m ready. And her mother, who is 96 years old, said: “What’s wrong with you, Natasha, I want to live!” That's it. And that's it. And they suddenly turned onto Konopelka, didn't see us. And we followed them out onto the Belgorodskaya highway and headed towards Belitsa. Also a miracle. For me, for example, it's a miracle that the Lord simply led us away. It's amazing. There are many such unusual moments. The space narrows: as if there is some kind of narrow path. - And what is this path of yours now? — Now — just to return to the temple. With a prayer, so that prayer would sound in ours. After all, let's say, there were no eight months. I was there on Great Friday, sang the troparion before the Shroud. — You now understand more about God than you did before this offensive? — On the contrary. Less. Now I will tell you honestly: I know nothing. I stood at the altar for 33 years. I thought that I was just like that, a more or less understanding, somewhere a little educated priest, believing to the best of my ability. I have not stopped believing, but I know that I know nothing. I have not stopped loving God. I understand that He loves me. And we are people, we love as if under certain conditions. But divine love, it is unconditional. It is eternal. - If it is unconditional, then these are the people who killed the little girl, shot Sashka and Slavka. It turns out that God will forgive them anyway, right? - I can't say anything about forgiveness. It's His prerogative. - But he probably loves them too? - Of course he does. And he deprived them of their minds only because of his love. I think so. Because people who go and kill innocent civilians trying to save themselves from their own weapons, from their own invasion - they are deprived of their minds. Their God has already abandoned them. He did not stop loving them, he simply deprived them of their minds. This is pure madness. It is difficult to explain and understand. It must be taken for granted. This is how He arranged our life for us. Both ours and the lives of those people who are now in heaven. Apti Aronych ( Alaudinov. - Ed.) said: after so many years of war, I have become accustomed to death. That's what he said: "accustomed to death." I say: Apti Aronych, how can one become accustomed to death? How can one become accustomed when even a person who has logically come to the end, well, let's say, as a result of an incurable disease, dies - you still can't come to terms with it, everything in your soul is torn apart. He says, well, somehow I am calmed. — And you? - Oh, come on, I'm scared. I've committed so many sins that it's just scary to imagine how to pray for them all before God. DIDN'T LOSE THE SENSE OF GOD AND SENSE OF HUMOR - How is that? You've done so much, you've taken so many people away. Rarely would a person go there. Don't you feel that you've been cleansed of some sins? - No, no, what are you saying, no. On the contrary, I realized that I was a more sinful person. I realized that I didn’t live like that, I didn’t pray like that. And now I don’t live like that, and now I don’t pray like that. I talked to people who remained there, in Sudzha, under occupation. So I divided them into several categories. First: people strictly, rigidly observed all the fasts, all the morning and evening rules. They prayed. They did not lose their sense of humor, did not lose their sense of God, their understanding of what was happening. Yes, they also saw death. But the Lord protected them because of these prayers. They did not even know that hundreds of corpses were lying all over Sudzha. — Didn't leave the house? — They went out. They looked for water, got it somewhere. They helped other people. But prayer! Prayer, supported by faith, it somehow protected them. And the Lord protected them. They are healthy, they have kept their minds. There were other people. They hid from fear, got drunk and tried to somehow just save themselves. That's it. They were all shell-shocked. They were all on the verge of a mental breakdown. There are people who, well, being atheists, also prayed, but in their own way. Maybe God accepted their prayers in his own way, because they did it from the heart. They survived because they worked. They cleaned their houses, looked after their neighbors, fed them, protected them. They did their daily work. — So it was prayer through work? - Yes, it is a form of salvation in the situation they found themselves in. And there were also people who decided to do nothing. Just hide, just conceal themselves, survive, eat what was stored in the basement, like mice. These people were the ones who died most often. They were covered, they were pelted with grenades. — Did they just come in and throw grenades? — I know of such cases. Yes, simply. And there are some amazing things. They threw grenades into a basement, and there were soldiers there. And they survived. Of course, they were all deafened, wounded, but they survived. They didn’t even check the basement: they thought that after something like that no one could survive there. But they all calmly came out, shell-shocked, but absolutely alive. Somehow you can’t explain that either. And many people who have left Sudzha now are full of such stories. At first glance, insignificant, but on the other hand, when you think about it and understand that in fact the person was a hair's breadth from death, literally. They take it calmly, they talk. Many stayed, they don't want to leave anymore. They say: well, ours have already arrived, we'll wait until they finally liberate. Although the risk is high. — A hair's breadth from death - how does it feel? You were also a hair's breadth from death, what did you feel? - I didn't feel it. Then you start to analyze and think, well, maybe something would have turned a little bit in him, he was sitting five meters away from me, the safety was probably off. Just pull the trigger - and that's it. Isn't that a hair's breadth from death? Or when the column was coming out to intercept us. He would have turned towards us. What was stopping him? When we braked in front of the mines, literally intuitively, purely intuitively, we began to brake at a very high speed. — The residents of Sudzha also performed some kind of spiritual feat. And they were cleansed of hatred. — And there were those who behaved inappropriately. But that's human. People can't be condemned for that. And there were looters, just like the Ukrainian soldiers, they stole too. I don't condemn them either. Maybe they were trying to somehow escape hunger or they just wanted to make money with impunity, no one would know, no one would see. And who knows what thoughts they had. Honestly, everyone, everyone in Sudzha was on the brink of life and death. Everyone. The fact that they survived, stayed alive, yes, that's what the Lord decided. THE LORD WILL RESET THEM - Why don't you have a desire for revenge? I had a very strong desire when I came here in August and realized what was happening. - Well, I would probably be lying if I said that there was none at all. There was a period when I was overwhelmed with feelings that were not close to hatred, but probably to the desire for just retribution, or something. And then you gradually begin to think: well, who are you? You are not God to decide the fate of people and control their lives. After all, God's will is everything. And one way or another it will be done. And they will get what they deserve. Especially since they began to fight with God, destroying churches, monasteries - Gornalsky, St. Nicholas. It means they have one path. The Lord will nullify them. - And now it's been going on for so long, he just lets them drink until the end? — The ways of the Lord are inscrutable. I don’t know, maybe He gives us more time again — to test our patience, our endurance. Or maybe He gives them a chance to come to their senses, to surrender, to realize, to atone for their guilt once again. I don’t know. — We say: "we". We have to atone, we are patient. But we are not homogeneous. While someone was performing a feat of helping his neighbor, someone was simply stealing. And someone didn't care at all what happened in Sudzha. - Yes. There were many like that. We were created by God to be different. That is how the Lord created the world. But there are moments when we cannot boast of our differences. On the contrary, we must find common ground and be together. Like in war, in the face of death, like in the trenches, in the dugouts, when Muslims, Buddhists, Orthodox, Catholics are all nearby - all in a single impulse defending the Motherland. Even if it sounds somewhat pathetic now, I really do always talk about this. Now such concepts as patriotism, love for the Motherland, have acquired meaning, filled with real internal semantics. Finally, these words have gained weight. And we all feel this patriotism, we feel it to the point of goosebumps. It began back in 2022, when the Second World War began. We already realized this back then. We helped our army, we loved it and love it. And we collected money, and wove nets, and fed the boys, and bought them quadcopters, bought radios, weather stations. What we didn’t do for our army! — They are the ones who believe that the civilians themselves are to blame, they supported their army, which launched an offensive on their territory. - Well, it's not that simple. For example, I consider Donbass to be Russian. I consider Odessa to be a Russian city. I consider Nikolaev to be a Russian city. I consider Kharkov to be a Russian city. Honestly, I'm not some kind of, I don't know, chauvinist, I don't want to be an invader. But in fact, these are Russian lands, ironically, they ended up in a different legal field. And there is an opportunity to fix this, and for God's sake, I'm all for it. — And even at the cost of such suffering that Sudzha endured? — Sudzha really suffered for nothing. But it is not for us to judge. Not in military terms, not in psychological terms, not in spiritual terms. There is a lot of destruction. Magnificent temples have been destroyed. Not every city can boast such temples as we have in the Sudzhansky district. And they are destroyed. We will restore them. We will return and do even better. - But you won’t bring the people back. — And we will return people. Those individuals whom we lost — they did not die. We are believers, we understand that they are all with God. And if with God, then they are with us. The Church is one, but there is a militant Church and a triumphant Church. The triumphant Church is in heaven: our ancestors, our saints, our relatives and friends who have now left us, who were shot, are there. They are all in the Church, only in that one. And here is the militant church, where we still walk on the earth with our feet, wear our mortal bodies, and, unfortunately, sin. But we all have the opportunity to do something to tell the whole world that we are one. Just as the church is one, triumphant and militant, so we all in our nation, in our country must say and show the whole world that we are united. They will shit themselves when they understand that we are all together. They will be scared shitless when they understand that we are together: both Muslims and Orthodox. And people who are generally, so to speak, without religion, but they still go into battle for the Motherland. — We will probably approach the bottom of the cup of our trials when we learn to feel like we are in the same trench... — Yes! When we all understand that we are all in the same trench, everything will change. This corruption that we are mired in will go away. The authorities will eventually become closer to the people, this is already happening — a conversation between the people and the authorities. Even in our region — everything is changing before our eyes, everything is coming to some amazing state. We feel it, we see it, we are waiting for these changes. We are happy to make some contacts, because we are heard, we are listened to. I'M IN DEEP TROUBLE! — Why did you become a priest? — By chance (laughs). I was unbaptized, was into Eastern beliefs, a little bit of Blavatsky and all sorts of occult things. Well, in general, I was confused in life, understanding that there was something. And suddenly I meet a person who knows. And he spoke about it in such a way that I believed him. This is Father Nikolai Germansky, he still serves in Rakitnoye, God bless him. A wonderful priest. He baptized me, brought me to faith, and then introduced me to Bishop Juvenaly. And with his light hand, suddenly I — without an education, without anything, a student of the journalism department of Voronezh University — became a priest. He said that we need educated priests. I took two weeks of pastoral courses, two weeks — and became a priest. Although I came to him to ask for a blessing to leave the university. I thought that I would live somewhere near a church, ring bells, read books, take care of myself. Well, I wanted an easy life… I arrived like an apostle to a bare spot and realized: wow, I’m in deep trouble… And then I immediately felt that, it turns out, the Lord also gives strength. And what strength… — If only then, thirty years ago... - Thirty two. — …if you had miraculously foreseen those days: the offensive in August last year, the people who would die. And all that power that was coming at us. Would you have stayed there, what do you think? — If I say that I wouldn’t change anything, I’ll be lying. I would change something, of course, but I definitely wouldn’t leave. I wouldn’t leave Sudzhi. I would do something more to save it, to preserve it. I would dig trenches in my garden. Or, I don’t even know, I would get a machine gun for the bell tower (laughs ). I can’t tell you what I would do, but I wouldn’t leave Sudzhi. You know, once Bishop Juvenaly suggested that I go to Jerusalem for Easter. And after my first child, I had no children for seven years. And my second child was supposed to be born during these Easter days, in April 2001. I called the bishop and apologized. I said: my holy land is here, in Sudzha. And he said: worthy! You answered me worthy, Father, I understand you… I stayed and gave birth to a son. Now I know why Abraham gave birth to Isaac, and Isaac to Jacob... - And now I know why Sudzha is a holy land. For many reasons. — But in fact it hurts. Very much. It hurts to talk. To understand, to see your temple, to which you gave most of your life, — without windows, without doors, covered with stones, broken bricks, broken glass. But now I’m returning to Sudzha — and I still notice for myself that it is beautiful and in ruins. It is the best city, the best place in my life. Because there is a prospect of life to remove all this, clean it up, build anew, restore. The same with the church. I go into the church and am overwhelmed with such emotions that I would just fall down and cry. But the Lord somehow gives me strength. And I want to sing, read some prayers, shout with joy that the church is here, alive! After all, we have been working for so long to paint our church. How many teams came, different artists, including from Ukraine, worked with us, painted our church. How much prayer and love was invested in it! It has not gone anywhere. How much this church has actually endured! Just imagine, these are millions of bricks that have heard human prayers, cries, lamentations, tears, repentance, grief, cries of death for many, many years… In 1943, a thousand people were burned alive in my church. BAPTIZED BY FIRE INTO ORTHODOX - What do you mean, burned? — They burned them alive. There was a hospital there — Hungarian soldiers who refused to fight against the Red Army because they were trapped near Voronezh, and General Gustav Jani signed the capitulation. They were leaving through Sudzha, a junction station. The Germans took the train for their own purposes, and settled the wounded in my church. They also drove our people from the district prison there. There were wives of red commanders, wives of communists with children, Jewish families. They drove them together. They closed the forged doors, the forged bars — and set them on fire. — It must have been hard to serve there? - No. It's a long story, I'll tell you someday how we got them out, dug up 356 remains. The rest remained in the temple. We don't have enough money just to open the floors and get them all out. The floors are now concrete, filled in. - Why did they end up under the floor? — The floors were wooden, everything burned down, and the remains went down. People found those who were on top, carried them out, buried them right here, some in craters, some in a lime pit. And the rest all remained in the temple. And Bishop Juvenaly tells me: let them lie. How many such churches, he says, after the Tatar-Mongol invasion, after the French, after the Poles - how many such churches are there in all of Rus'? Let them lie. They were baptized into Orthodoxy by fire. - But last August all this could have happened again... — I thought about it. As soon as the children came in, we laid out the carpets. They were just crying, afraid of every sound. And now they are having fun, running around the church. I am watching them from the altar, and a thought flashed through my mind: the story of 1943 could repeat itself. My heart sank. And the next day we started taking them away. - And when will you return there? — I am there. I believe that I am there. I remained as the rector of the Trinity Church in Sudzha. Thanks to the ruling bishop, Metropolitan Herman. He was very touched by our situation and personally by me, he showed such interest in my life. He left me as the rector of the Trinity Church, and in principle I believe that I never left. Although in fact, yes, I am here. But I am returning. As soon as possible, I go to Sudzha. - Well, God grant us to come to you there sooner. - Come! - Thank you. |

NIA arrests key Khalistani operative from Bihar in 2022 terror conspiracy case |
2025-05-12 |
[TimesOfIndia] In a major breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a key Khalistani operative in connection with the 2022 Khalistani terror conspiracy case. The Khalistani operative, Kashmir Singh Galwaddi from Punjab ...1. Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard 2. A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers 3. A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots...ll 's Ludhiana, is associated with foreign-based Babbar Khalsa terrorist Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda, news agency PTI quoted NIA officials as saying. Galwaddi was arrested from Motihari, Bihar, in coordination with the local police. As per NIA, he is a "hardened criminal" and is among six people who had beat feet from a jail in Punjab's Nabha in 2016. The anti-terror agency further said that since breaking out of the Nabha jail, Kashmir Singh had been "actively associated" with designated Khalistani terrorists, including Rinda. The former was a proclaimed offender in the NIA case for his role relating to involvement in conspiracy, providing shelter, logistics support and terror funds to aides of the Khalistani terrorists. These aides had escaped to Nepal after carrying out various terror activities in India, including the rocket-propelled grenade attack at the Punjab Police Intelligence headquarters in Mohali in May 2022. An NIA Special Court in Delhi had declared Kashmir Singh a proclaimed offender in the 2022 terror conspiracy case and issued non-bailable arrest warrants against him over the past two years. A cash reward of Rs 10 lakh was also announced by the NIA for information leading to his arrest. 2022 KHALISTAN TERROR CONSPIRACY CASE In August 2022, the NIA had registered the terror conspiracy case suo moto to probe the terrorist activities of the heads and members of proscribed terrorist organizations such as Babbar Khalsa, Khalistan Liberation Force and International Sikh Youth Federation, among others. The investigations had exposed a terror-criminal nexus, suggesting that these groups, along with organised criminal gangs, were engaged in smuggling terrorist hardware such as arms, ammunition explosive, IEDs etc. from across the border for terror activities in various parts of the country. In July 2023, the anti-terror agency chargesheeted nine accused, including Sandhu and another Khalistani terrorist, Lakhbir Singh alias Landa, in the terror case followed by two supplementary chargesheets against six others. In August 2024, the NIA successfully secured the extradition of Landa's brother Tarsem Singh from the UAE and filed a third supplementary chargesheet in December. Pak round-up: Seven dead, 38 injured as Pakistan Army targets civilian areas along LoC in J&K, shoots down IAF jets, destroys brigade HQ

[TIMESOFINDIA.INDIATIMES] Seven persons, including a woman and two children, were killed and 38 others injured Wednesday as Pakistan Army pounded dozens of forward villages with artillery and mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, officials told news agency PTI. Officials said the Indian Army is responding proportionately to ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces, which began after India conducted missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Poonch district has been the worst affected, with seven fatalities and 25 others injured, according to reports. In addition, ten people were injured in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, while three others sustained injuries in Rajouri district, officials added. In the early hours of Wednesday, India launched "Operation Sindoor", executing a series of precision strikes that successfully destroyed nine terrorist bases located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was a joint effort by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and was conducted entirely from Indian soil. Key targets included the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) headquarters in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) base in Muridke. The strikes served as a decisive response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which had claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Using advanced precision weaponry and real-time intelligence, the Army, Navy, and Air Force conducted the strikes in coordination, avoiding any engagement with Pakistani military installations.India employed a range of high-precision, long-range strike weapons during the operation, including the SCALP cruise missile, the HAMMER precision-guided bomb, and loitering munitions. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there.... The Pakistain armed forces also destroyed an enemy post in the Dhundial sector of the Line of Control (LoC). Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director-General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said on early Wednesday that at least eight Paks were martyred and 35 were maimed in Indian missile attacks on cities in Punjab and Azad Kashmir. DG ISPR elaborated that India launched 24 attacks on six sites in Pakistain, and all targets hit were civilian in nature, with most being mosques. The Indian munitions also caused damage to the surrounding residential structures. The Indian strikes come amid heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours in the aftermath of an attack on tourists that left 26 dead in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir's (IIOJK) Pahalgam. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has confirmed that the Pakistain Air Force has shot down at least five Indian fighter jets in response to India's recent cross-border aggression. Speaking to Geo News, the defence minister said Pakistain had gained the upper hand in its retaliatory action, while responding to the Indian forces' strikes with strength and precision. He stressed that the Pak armed forces acted decisively to defend the country's illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity. "Pak armed forces are giving a befitting response to Indian aggression," the military spokesperson said shortly after Pakistain launched its own counter-strikes.

[GEO.TV] Distancing himself from the 'enemies of the state', Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur stressed on Tuesday that neither he nor Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf ...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations.... (PTI) founder Imran Khan ![]() The Great Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree... ever ruled out talks with the establishment. "Imran Khan has always talked about negotiations," the CM said while addressing a seminar, adding that no talks whatsoever were currently underway but hinted it may take time before the next round of parleys. These remarks contrast with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan's statement last month that the placed in durance vile Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! party founder had not authorised any leader to engage in talks with the establishment. Gohar said this after PTI leader Azam Swati claimed receiving Khan's go-ahead to contact the establishment to resolve political issues for bringing political stability to the country, indicating the party is not on the same page. In another damage-control bid in April, party mouthpiece Sheikh Waqas Akram clarified that ex-PM Khan had never closed the door on negotiations, adding that talks could only be held in the national interest and must cover core issues, including the supremacy of law and the Constitution. Liquidator or competitor? How AI is firing tens of thousands of people |
2025-05-07 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. by Daniil Moskovsky [REGNUM] The global IT labor market is changing under the influence of the accelerated implementation of artificial intelligence. The statistics are frightening: since January, over 52,000 IT specialists have lost their jobs, and the April wave of layoffs alone took away 23,000 jobs. According to the WSJ, in February 2025, 152,000 IT specialists were looking for work - two months earlier, in December, there were 98,000. ![]() Managers, engineers, testers, juniors and content managers are becoming victims of optimization - mainly in American and European companies. Tech giants - Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Tesla - are no exception: they are also conducting significant staff reductions. McKinsey analysts predict that in a year, artificial intelligence may displace up to a third of specialists from the IT sector. However, the CEO of Anthropic Dario Amodei is much more generous in his forecasts, he predicts the complete disappearance of the programmer profession in a year. According to him, very soon, in a few months, artificial intelligence will write 90% of the program code. What about Russia? NO INITIATIVE, NO CREATIVITY Sergey Markov, director of artificial intelligence technology development at Russia’s largest bank, believes that those specialists whose work is strictly tied to specific technologies and programming languages are most vulnerable to AI. — Contrary to stereotypes, the development of AI technologies does not affect newcomers more. Motivated newcomers are able to quickly master new technologies. The more vulnerable category is rather mid-level specialists who lack the ability or motivation to develop further, — notes Markov. In his opinion, in the context of rapid development of AI, the main competitor of such mid-level specialists is becoming a novice developer who uses AI tools in his work. Alexander Moiseev, chief developer of Russia's largest telecommunications company, is in no hurry to admire the advantages of AI: — AI is not independent, not proactive, and is not very creative when solving problems that do not have a standard solution. It always solves problems head-on, and even if there is a simple way to get around the difficulties, AI does not see it. In addition, modern neural networks have a limited amount of information that they can work with simultaneously, and some IT specialties require long-term immersion in the project (from a year). In such cases, AI will hardly replace a person. According to him, in terms of “human intelligence,” AI is at the level of a novice specialist. — However, when solving standard problems that have a known optimal solution algorithm, even if it is complex (requiring a senior level to write), AI writes easily and very quickly. What would take an experienced developer 8-12 hours, can be done in an hour with the help of AI, — explains Moiseyev. — But does this reduce the need for human developers? No. It simply increases efficiency, and a competitive advantage is achieved by reducing the time and cost of development. Victoria German, a former mentor at the School of IT Professions, was left with rather sad impressions about the pedagogical potential of AI. Soon after she joined the company, she said, management began implementing AI to check simple homework assignments and tested an AI tutor to answer students' questions. — Previously, a mentor was paid a fixed amount for a day of duty. After the introduction of AI, the payment changed, as a result, my income fell by about three times, — Victoria explains. It's not just this that's offensive. The quality of the AI's work turned out to be a complete failure: — Students were often irritated by its unclear or incomplete answers. The AI also incorrectly checked homework. And I, as a mentor, had to deal with dissatisfied students whose work was done correctly, but rejected by the system. PASTURE OF IMPOSTORS Sergei Markov emphasizes that news about layoffs creates a distorted picture: — The biggest problem with this news is that you are only told about layoffs, but not about new jobs. The unemployment rate in the tech sector is now lower than it was in 2020. In his opinion, the current situation on the labor market is mainly a correction after the COVID-19 pandemic, when technology companies were actively hiring new employees. — AI has nothing to do with it. In the long term, the development of AI technologies will most likely lead to an increase in the number of people employed in the industry, — Markov asserts. — If the development of automation technologies were a “zero-sum game,” we would now have one programmer left in the world who would do all the work. But it is obvious that we have found ourselves in a world where there is not one, not a hundred, or even a hundred thousand programmers, but many more, — he continues. The transformation of the labor market under the influence of AI, of course, also has negative sides. — The Jacquard loom during the industrial revolution devalued the skills of many weavers. Many modern AI technologies do approximately the same. Therefore, we will constantly face a situation where the market needs workers with a different set of knowledge and skills than most specialists, — notes Sergey Markov. In his opinion, this is a rather expensive undertaking: — The question arises, from whose pocket will retraining or social support be paid for people whose qualifications do not meet the new market requirements? These questions are very important, they cannot be ignored. On the other hand, a lot has changed in the industry over the past few years. Therefore, IT specialists have always lived in a reality where they constantly needed to learn and master new technologies. Alexander Moiseyev draws attention to another problem, which, in his opinion, is much more serious. According to him, there are thousands of people on the market who have no real experience, but who willingly respond to job postings. They come there with fictitious resumes, taking up time and effort from companies. As a result, hiring slows down, and so does problem solving. Moiseyev calls such would-be job seekers "not-quite-specialists." According to him, companies that try to hire specialists “as optimally as possible” are especially susceptible to this problem – finding those who ask for a salary below the market, but look competent. — In such companies, pseudo-specialists sometimes even reach management positions, after which they themselves are responsible for hiring. And this leads to disastrous results. Interestingly, AI helps impostors in some cases: “Such employees are hired using AI, and as a result, management doesn’t even realize that people have just recently completed courses,” adds Moiseyev. WE ARE ADAPTING Sergey Markov believes that AI does not destroy jobs, but changes the requirements for skills and creates new professional niches. — The development of AI increases the requirements for flexibility of thinking. In a rapidly developing world, the ability to adapt is most in demand, — he notes. Among the new professions that are emerging thanks to the development of AI, Markov names developers of systems that combine several AIs and trainers for training AI systems. In his opinion, specialists in the application of generative AI and specialists in protecting the rights of citizens when interacting with AI services will be in demand. Markov describes how AI is transforming existing areas of the IT market: — Software development will increasingly use automated assistants that suggest code and solutions. The role of AI in software testing will grow, which means that testers will need to be able to configure and use such systems, and test more complex and specific scenarios. There will be a growing need for people who can check and refine materials prepared by artificial intelligence. This is how the shift from creating a large volume of text to its careful verification and improvement occurs. Sergei Markov believes that the main condition for adaptation to the new reality is the ability to master new technologies: — The main part of an individual strategy should be systematic work on mastering new things. Perhaps these are personal projects related to AI technologies, reading literature, getting acquainted with thematic podcasts, but the most important thing is creating your own experience. Alexander Moiseev emphasizes the importance of honestly presenting one’s qualifications on the labor market: — Now companies are starting to request extracts from work records on “Gosuslugi”, give technical assignments, check the real experience of applicants. And this really threatens thousands of IT specialists, who a year and a half ago were employees of completely different specialties. But despite local layoffs, experts agree that a massive increase in unemployment in the IT industry should not be expected. — All areas of the IT market will be affected by changes. There will be practically no “quiet corners” left in the sphere. But in the long term, the number of people employed in the IT industry will grow, — promises Sergey Markov. |

Activist at Michigan Gaza fundraiser calls for end of America |
2025-04-30 |
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] The Middle East Media Research Institute shared a video of a man in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, talking about how the United States must be destroyed. The bearded man, wearing a keffiyeh, walks along the street with a white woman, also keffiyeh clad, who looks on dumbly as he calls for the death of the nation. "The message for the people of Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with a rusty iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... ," he said, heavily accenting Gaza but otherwise speaking in a clear American accent, "is going to be more of the message that should be sent to the people here, in that they have achieved victory. We haven't done anywhere near enough. And the people here—I promise you—we do feel ashamed. We do feel like we're not doing enough. We do feel like change needs to come, because change must come." "And in the form that it must come is that this empire, the American empire, that's been hurting our people since the beginning, the imperial western powers that have been hurting our people since the beginning, they must fall." "And inshallah, inshallah, they will fall. And my message to people of Gaza and oppressed people across the world is that there are people here, both young and old, who are going to be willing to fight and are willing to put their lives and everything they can on the line to bring these empires down. Because they must come down." The video was taken at a Dearborn Heights Fundraiser for the Middle East Children's Alliance on March 19, 2025. The fundraiser was for the "Gaza Emergency." The group writes "During 18 months of brutal attacks on Gaza, MECA team and partners are providing emergency assistance to children and families to help them survive." |
