Fulani expansion war, a federal pet, by Ochereome Nnanna - Vanguard News |
2025-04-23 |
A backgrounder on Nigeria's internal dysfunction. [VANGUARDNGR]Before his sudden, mysterious death, former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, left us with an enduring, prophetic soundbite. He said: “If an insurgency lasts for more than 24 hours, then, know that government has a hand in it”. Way back on May 8, 2014, The Cable newspaper published a retweet of the late General’s daughter, Ms Gumsu Abacha, quoting exactly the same one-liner in response to Boko Haram “exploits”. What would you say of the Fulani expansionism “insurgency” which has lasted 25 years? By “federal”, I do not necessarily mean the President Bola Tinubu administration, though it is also complicit as will be shown shortly. “Federal” here means the machinery of the Nigerian State, the ruling Establishment or dispensation, the power that be which produces and dictates to successive Federal Governments. Since 1999, this power dispensing machine has produced five presidents – Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, always making sure it does not fall into “wrong” hands. Only such mechanism could enact the magic of making Obasanjo president from jail, ensuring that no Northern candidate would stand against him. To the best of my knowledge, the Fulani wars of conquest started around 2001 in the Plateau area. Armed Fulani “herdsmen” were routinely massacring the indigenes to take over their fertile farmlands. The military, police, security and what have you, have failed to stop them despite several eye-service deployments. But when the Tarokh people armed themselves and retaliated in May 2004, President Obasanjo declared a state of emergency and removed PDP Governor, Joshua Dariye, who was seen as encouraging his indigenous people to defend themselves. What did Dariye do later? He joined Muhammadu Buhari’s APC and helped the party capture the state in 2015. Buhari pardoned and released him from his 14-year jail conviction for allegedly stealing N2bn. Dariye could not beat them. He joined them, and was rewarded by Buhari himself, just as Adams Oshiomhole had promised all who join APC. Lionhearted governors who were crushed became a lesson to others. Fight the State and pay for it; collude with the State against your people and be rewarded. When you see Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State running kitikiti-katakata to lick the toes of fellow governors from the North over the Uromi lynching, you know the fear the State exerts over occupants of powerful or lucrative positions. When Buhari came to power in 2015, he saw himself as the Nigerian variant of Omar Al Bashir of Sudan, who armed Arab pastoralist militia, the Janjaweed, to conquer and annex the lands of black Sudanese, thus sparking the Darfur crises. Buhari was determined to make Nigeria the new home of his Fulani kinsmen from everywhere. He tried to enforce his Ruga grazing routes, water resources and Livestock Plan policies throughout the country, but these were stiffly resisted. Buhari then threw open the borders for armed Fulani and their families, especially the nomads from everywhere, to relocate to Nigeria. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he and his powerful kinsmen used food and cement trailers and trucks to distribute armed Fulani youths in forests all over the Middle Belt and Southern states. It was clearly a well-organised operation aimed at forcefully grafting alien, violent Fulani elements among unwilling indigenous communities. They were camped in the forests where they killed people in their farms and harvested organs for sale. They kidnapped for ransom and used livestock to destroy farms. They flushed people out of their ancestral lands and occupied communities. The Federal Government and its organs of security and coercion protected them from those seeking to defend themselves. They were promptly released when arrested by vigilante groups and handed over to the supposed law enforcement agencies. Government and (unfortunately, sections of the media) deceived the public, calling attacks on innocent Nigerian farming communities “farmers-herders clashes”. Government kept promising displaced people they would be restored to their ancestral lands but have now become permanent occupants of Internally-Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps. The invaders are settling down and renaming conquered communities. The Federal Government refused to even acknowledge Fulani invaders as terrorists. Instead, they turned around to falsely slap that moniker on the Eastern Security Network, ESN, formed by the concerned diaspora Igbo through Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to defend Igboland. When Tinubu controversially won the 2023 presidential election, I consoled myself that Buhari the Fulaniser was out and Tinubu, being a Southerner, would check the Fulanisation agenda. It has also been wreaking even more havoc in the South-West, Tinubu's home zone. But we were in for a shock. After initially arresting and detaining Bello Bodejo, the leader of the loquacious and violent Miyetti Allah Kyautal Hore, Tinubu quickly released him when the Fulani elite threatened him. He even went ahead to create Federal Ministry of Livestock to appease them, thus fully resuscitating Buhari's Fulanisation agenda. Tinubu holds on to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu even after releasing Fulani's Bodejo and Sunday Igboho of Yoruba Nation. Under Tinubu, the cuddling of Fulani herdsmen terrorism continues unabated, and so do the endless barrages of meaningless condolence messages and empty promises. The entire landscape is filled with cowardly governors and political leaders who sell out their people for political power and lucrative posts. At this rate, the indigenous people of Nigeria are doomed. Retired Lt-General Theophilus Danjuma warned before (and has just repeated the warning) that the government is an enhancer of Fulani expansionism. ''They collude,'' he says. ''They will not protect you! Arm and protect yourselves''. Danjuma, a hero of the Nigerian side of the civil war, has written off the armed forces he once served and led. Who are we to believe otherwise? Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB and ESN have once again been vindicated, even by Danjuma! Self-defence is the first law of nature. The ball is in our court. Reported fighting in Sudan's Darfur mars fragile truce, fmr. Gen. Omar al-Bashir moved to army hospital
2023-04-28 | |||
![]()
The truce eased fighting in the country's capital, creating a lull that allowed foreign governments to evacuate thousands of their nationals. Tens of thousands of Sudanese traveled to their country's land borders with Egypt, Chad and Æthiopia, and to a port city on the country's Red Sea. The new festivities targeted civilians in the capital city of Genena, the residents said, an area that is regularly roiled by outbursts of brutal tribal violence. They described attacks by fighters, mostly wearing the uniforms of the country's powerful paramilitary, on several neighborhoods across the city early Thursday, forcing many families to leave their homes. "The attacks come from all directions," said Amany, a Genena resident who asked to withhold her family name for her safety. "All are fleeing." Much attention has been centered on the capital's intense fighting, including ![]() KABOOM!... s and artillery and dronezaps, since the country's military and its powerful paramilitary known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) started battling for key government institutions and military bases on April 15. The fighting in the capital has created dire conditions for many struggling to obtain food and water, and electricity is cut off across much of the capital and other cities. Multiple aid agencies have had to suspend operations, a heavy blow in a country where a third of the population of 46 million relies on humanitarian assistance. But there are now more indications that other remote provinces are witnessing deadly violence. Fighting in Genena first escalated earlier this week. Residents reported widespread looting and destruction of government offices and aid agencies' compounds in the city including U.N. premises and the headquarters of the Sudanese Red Islamic Thingy. Adam Haroun, a political self-proclaimed genius in West Darfur, said dozens of people were killed over the past two days in Genena. He said the fighting "with light and heavy weapons" has already turned into tribal violence. Speaking over the phone from Genena's western neighborhood of Gamarek, Haroun said tribal fighters were roaming the streets, destroying and looting "whatever they found." He said Genena's main open market was completely destroyed. "The battles are raging right now," he said over the phone, the sound of gunfire overtaking his voice at times. "It's scorched-earth war." Volker Perthes, the U.N. envoy for Sudan, said late Wednesday that the Genena festivities have been centered on civilians and run the risk of kicking off a dangerous cycle of violence between rival tribes. Sudan: Omar Al-Bashir moved to military hospital
![]() ArabizeDarfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Hee was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it... was moved to an army hospital after heavy fighting broke out leading to a jailbreak last week, military officials said, amid speculations that the former strongman managed to escape from prison during the unprecedented melee. Fighting broke out between the Sudan Armed Forces [SAF] and the paramilitary wing Rapid Support Forces [RSF] with both claiming to be interested in restoring civilian rule in the country. It is during the battles that a number of inmates managed to escape, leading to speculations about the whereabouts of the former leader. In a statement, the army said that al-Bashir and 30 other prisoners were moved to Aliyaa Hospital which handles patients in the forces, abruptly ending his stay at Kober prison in Bahri in northern Khartoum where he was being held with several other former government officials. "Former President Bashir’s family members said they are waiting for the fighting to end so he can go to trial and prove his innocence," said Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum. The release of about 25,000 convicted criminals added to a growing sense of lawlessness in Khartoum, where residents have reported worsening insecurity with widespread looting and gangs roaming the streets.
Among those who escaped are Ahmed Harun, a former official in the ousted regime of Omar Al-Bashir who reported that he had managed to escape from the correctional facility along with a number of other Islamist hardliners, including Ali Osman Taha, Awad El Jaz, and Nafi Ali Nafi. Harun, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hauge was however quoted by the Tayba Satellite TV station saying that he and other former government officials who had escaped will be ready to defend themselves before a judge. He added that they decided to flee the prison to escape heavy bombardment and repeated power and water outage in the facility since fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Raid Support Forces (RSF) broke out on April 15th. However, a hangover is the wrath of grapes... the RSF has accused the Sudanese Army of being behind the release of the former government officials from prison.

2018-04-20 |
[Gulf News] President Omar Al Bashir on Thursday fired Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ebrahim Ghandour after he said that Sudanese diplomats abroad had been unpaid for months due to a government cash shortfall, state media reported. In a speech to politicians on Wednesday, Ghandour, who negotiated the lifting of decades-old sanctions with Washington in October 2017, said his ministry had also been unable to pay rents for several Sudanese diplomatic missions. |

Weapons continue to flow from Turkey and Qatar to terrorists, claims Ministry of Interior |
2015-03-02 |
[Libya Herald] ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... and Qatar ...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates... are continuing to supply Lions of Islam operating in Libya with a steady flow of illegally imported weapons, Libyan acting Interior Minister, Colonel Ahmed Ali Baraka, has said in a TV interview. According to Baraka, Turkish and Qatari aircraft are flying in and out of Libya Dawn ...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar... -controlled Mitiga air base with the weapons which, he said, showed "clear and explicit support" for terrorism in Libya. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens is unavailable for comment. The accusations against Turkey and Qatar by the Libyan government have been ongoing since the attacks began on Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... by the Misrata Brigades this past summer. Last June, General Khalifa Hafter issued an order for all Turks and Qataris to leave eastern Libya within 48 hours under the suspicion that they were supporting terrorist activity. Last September, Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni accused Sudan and Qatar of backing Libya Dawn and warned that if they did not stop, diplomatic relations would be cut. Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir has since patched things up with Thinni. The latter had also suggested that Qatar had changed its policy. However, it's easy to be generous with someone else's money... this latest attack, indicates a continuing suspicion. Just last month, Qatar and Turkey were forced to withdraw from the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... 's International Contact Group for Libya (ICG-L) in Addis Ababa after the delegates from Libya, Egypt, the UAE, Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... and Guinea boycotted the session over the presence of the Qatar and Turkey, claiming that the two countries had nothing to contribute to the African Union (AU). Qatar continues to be widely accused in Libya of interfering in Libyan politics and of supporting the Moslem Brüderbund and Islamists, an accusation it denies. Turkey denies similar allegations. It points out that it has been at the forefront of trying to help rebuild stability and security in the country by helping train the Libyan police and army. Nevertheless, Turkey is one of a handful of countries which has publicly received officials from the otherwise internationally-rejected Tripoli administration and parliament. |

Bashir launches reelection bid |
2015-01-12 |
[ARABNEWS] Sudans President Omar Al-Bashir launched his bid for reelection Sunday, facing little threat to his quarter century in power despite an ailing economy, multiple insurgencies and allegations of war crimes. Bashirs supporters view him as a strong hand capable of holding the chaotic country together, while his opponents are hounded by the security forces, marginalized inside Sudan and riven by personal rivalries. It is unclear whether anyone will challenge Bashir to lead the country of nearly 39 million people. Formal applications to register for the April 13 vote opened on Sunday, and the electoral commission said it had already received Bashirs nomination. The opposition looks set to boycott the vote, as it did in 2010 in the first contested election since Bashir seized power in a 1989 coup. |

King Abdullah: We shall not rest till we eradicate terrorism |
2014-10-06 |
[ARABNEWS] King of the Arabians, Sheikh of the Burning Sands, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Sunday emphasized the importance of dialogue in combating extremism and promoting world peace. He also reiterated Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... 's determination to root out terrorism. "Engaging in dialogue is the only method to live in peace and harmony with other communities in the world. The dialogue will eventually prevent bloodshed and avoid disunity, ignorance and extremism," the king said in his message to the guests of God who have to come for Haj this year. King Abdullah stressed: "We shall not rest till we eradicate terrorism along with the misguided sect that has used Islam as bridge to achieve its vested interests and unlawfully stigmatizes the beauty of Islam with their misleading thought." Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, read out the king's message during a reception in Mina, which was attended by Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, Bangladesh President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen and Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and representatives of foreign Haj missions. In his keynote address, King Abdullah emphasized the Islamic teachings and values that urge Moslems to live in peace with other sects and faith communities. "It has been reported that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said while circumambulating the Holy Kaaba 'how pure and good you are! how pure and good your fragrance is! how great and exalted you are! And how great and exalted your sanctity is! But I swear by Allah that the sanctity of a believer's blood and property in sight of Allah is greater than your sanctity," the king said. He noted the impact of the International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue in Vienna, which is named after King Abdullah, saying its activities would contribute to eradicating terrorism and promoting a cultural dialogue in the world. "We pray to Allah Almighty that dialogue will become a tool for debate and an essential approach of dealing between nations and peoples. However, a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... we hereby declare that Saudi Arabia will continue its efforts in fighting terrorism and extremism." |

Sudan shaken up by new gov't changes as regime opponents press on for reform |
2013-12-08 |
![]() Based on a key demand on the Sudanese street, however, many believe that change will come in the form of a regime shakeup, one that would get rid of the old guard and the ruling party. One of the first and foremost indications of such change was the stepping down of First Vice President Ali Osamn Taha, the second man in command and a staunch figure in Bashir's regime, last week. Taha engineered the Naivasha Agreement that ended years of civil war between North and South Sudan, and ultimately led to their partition. And although details around Taha's sudden exit were not fully disclosed, he himself revealed that he had left without dispute or disagreement with the government, believing himself to be a proponent of the batch of changes promised by Al-Bashir in 2011. Sudanese opposition and activists, nonetheless, do not view Taha's stepping down as real change. They cite the possibility of his return in the 2015 elections as a presidential hopeful and political heir to Al-Bashir, who declared he did not want to run himself. However, you can observe a lot just by watching... an editor-in-chief of one of the prominent local papers said in a special interview that the "time for Taha to become president has passed; he is paying the price of the peace agreement." "I find it hard to believe that he would be Bashir's successor according to the balance of power in the country at this point," he continued. In that vein, prominent National Congress Party (NCP) leader Mahgoub Abdel Salam told Ahram Online: "The in-place programme aimed to salvage the country has undergone several changes since 1989." "But an impending change is behind the current panic; some faces are fixed, and do not change, including Abdel Rahim Hussein, who worked between the presidential office and the interior ministry." Others were reshuffled only to hold posts in other ministries. "Those have remained in power for 24 years, representing the face of the salvationist government -- such as Taha when adopting the slogan of unity between the Islamists and the military." "Even though the absence of Taha from the political stage is hard to believe, if proven true it would entail a kind of transformation and could usher in a new era." Taha's safe exit paves the way for a successor, one who many believe was being long groomed for the position. Minister of Presidential Affairs General Bakri Hassan was an agreed-upon candidate within the ranks of the NCP, and even nominated by Taha himself. Hassan is the last remaining officer from the RCC, which was formed by 15 officers who staged a coup d'etat in the late 1980s. Besides that, he is Bashir's close confidante and former fellow paratrooper, seen also as the guardian of the command council. Whether evident consensus over Hassan is a mark of a peaceful transition of power in Sudan is up for question. However, you can observe a lot just by watching... a high profile source confirmed that Bashir "did not trust any other military man but Hassan." A criticism pointed at the current scenario is that changes are being made from within the palace, not outside it. Other considerations must also be taken into account, which might tip the power balance. A recent division within the ruling party has shaken up those in power, set off by the resignation of Deputy President Ghazi Salah Eddin following the crackdown on peaceful protests in September, and which led to the deaths of over 100 people, according to The anti-government protests fretted the regime, as many observers claimed in interview with Ahram Online, particularly because the regime employed Janjaweed mercenaries -- the same used in Darfur -- and did not resort to its usual forces. In the midst of protests, more than 30 of its top members presented a memo to the president criticising the government's decision to remove subsidies on fuel and other basic commodities, saying it "harshly" impacted Sudanese citizens. Another consideration to be made is the upsurge of reform movements and oppositional coalitions such the Reform Now Party, initiated by Salah Eddin. Others formed anti-government campaigns, such as "We're Fed Up" and "Change Now." Eddin, for one, believes his party will play a huge role in future politics in Sudan. He also thinks that the Sudanese tribes are another player that cannot be neglected, and whom, like Islamist powers, would refuse any hint of a power vacuum in Sudan. Such changes come in the wake of difficult economic conditions, especially as the inflation rate reached 45 percent in October 2013, according to official figures, while fuel prices are expected to spike by 90 percent. What has led to the further deterioration of the situation is the refusal of Gulf States and neighbouring African countries to provide financial support for the current government to help it out of the crisis. |

Sudan on verge of collapse: Ruling party reformer |
2013-10-22 |
![]() Despite the disciplinary action against him, former presidential adviser Ghazi Salahuddin Atabani told AFP the reformers would not back down. Atabani was the lead signatory on a letter by 31 prominent National Congress Party (NCP) reformers to President Omar Al-Bashir. They said the government's response to the late-September demonstrations over fuel price hikes betrayed the regime's Islamic foundations. The reformers made a series of recommendations, including for an independent probe of the shooting of civilians during the protests, but they instead found themselves under investigation by a party committee. Asked by AFP whether his party membership had been suspended, Atabani said: "I did receive a letter this morning from the committee to that effect." But he said the committee's decisions are "null and void" because it was not formally established by the NCP. "It is more significant though to note the huge importance the NCP leadership is attaching to this minor internal issue at a time when the country is on the verge of collapse," Atabani said. Thousands of people, many of them Khartoum-area poor, erupted into the streets after September 23 when the government cut fuel subsidies, forcing retail prices up by more than 60 percent. The protests and their Arab Spring-inspired calls for the downfall of the regime were the worst urban unrest of Bashir's 24-year rule. Authorities report 60-70 deaths, and say they had to intervene when crowds turned violent, attacking petrol stations and police. Bashir said slashing the subsidies aimed to prevent the "collapse" of an economy beset by inflation and an unstable currency since the separation of South Sudan. Khartoum lost billions of dollars in export earnings when the South became independent in 2011, taking with it most of Sudan's oil production. Sudanese have endured two years of rising prices, a sinking currency and an unemployment rate estimated to exceed 30 percent. The country ranks near the bottom of international indexes of corruption, human development and press freedom. Atabani, a member of parliament, said the reformers "will pay little attention to the committee, and instead produce more political initiatives addressing the current political situation." In their memorandum to Bashir, the reformers said the government's economic measures were not presented to parliament and citizens had no chance to give input peacefully. They called for a reversal of the price hikes and for "professionals" to take over economic policy assisted by members of other political parties. The reformers also sought compensation for those maimed and killed in the protests, an end to press censorship, and respect for constitutional freedoms including peaceful assembly. Another reformer, Osama Taufiq, told AFP he had also received a letter "that said my activity in NCP has been frozen." He said the NCP's investigative committee is "not neutral". Party officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Taufiq is a leader of Al-Saihun ("Tourists for the sake of God"), an elite group of volunteer mujahedeen fighters from the 1983-2005 civil war with now-independent South Sudan. Analysts said Al-Saihun was close to a group of military men tossed in the clink Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! late last year for an alleged coup plot against the Khartoum government. Retired armed forces Brigadier Mohammed Ibrahim, who was among the 31 who signed the reformers' memorandum, was sentenced to five years in prison in April for allegedly leading the plot. Bashir later granted amnesty to him and others involved. |

Bashir's relatives protest for free expression in Sudan |
2013-10-12 |
[Al Ahram] Two relatives of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir led an anti-government protest on Friday calling for freedom of expression and a transitional administration, an AFP news hound said. Al-Tayeb Mustafa, Bashir's uncle, and Amien Banani who is related to Bashir's family by marriage, joined about 150 other people in the rally at the gates of a central Khartoum mosque. "We want freedom of expression... and freedom of peaceful demonstration," said a memorandum to the president read out by Banani, a former minister in Bashir's government. Banani now heads a small faction of the opposition Justice Party. Mustafa is chief of the bad boy Just Peace Forum party and runs Al-Intibaha, Sudan's most popular newspaper. Hundreds march for 'freedom' in Sudan |
2013-10-05 |
[Al Ahram] Hundreds of men and women marched for "freedom" in the Sudanese capital on Friday despite the deployment of militia, troops and riot police, AFP correspondents reported. One of the largest rallies occurred in the poor Shambat area of North Khartoum, where several hundred residents marched along the dirt roads between their houses. They tried to make their way to a large lot but were blocked by uniformed security officers armed with rifles. "A million deaders for a new dawn," they called. "Freedom! Freedom! Justice! Justice!" They chanted: "The people want the fall of the regime," rallying cry of the 2011 Arab Spring revolts which toppled longtime rulers around the region. Elsewhere, hundreds demonstrated outside a state security service building, a United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... source said, adding there had been a number of other peaceful demonstrations. The protests followed the main weekly Musselmen prayers and came in spite of the roundup of hundreds of people after deadly demonstrations last week. Authorities say 34 people died after petrol and diesel prices jumped on September 23 when the government cut fuel subsidies, sending thousands into the streets in the worst urban unrest of President Omar Al-Bashir's 24-year rule. |
