Outrage as French school makes Muslim and Jewish students wear coloured discs |
2015-09-29 |
[DAWN] A French school in being probed after it provoked outrage among parents of students in Auxerre, Burgundy for making Moslem and Jewish pupils wear coloured discs around their necks at lunchtime so canteen staff would not serve them pork according to a report on The Telegraph website. Students, who did not eat pork, at the Piedalloues primary school were ordered by staff to wear red-coloured discs while others, who did not eat meat, were given yellow discs to wear around their necks at lunchtime. Eighteen of the school's 1,500 pupils were made to wear the discs but the decision was taken back following protests by angry parents and community leaders, who said the move was similar of the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear under the Nazi occupation. "It's revolting. It reminds you of the darkest times," a local councillor, Malika Ounès was quoted as saying. "Practices like this are not acceptable. No one has the right to impose this on children." A probe was ordered by the town's Mayor, according to Christian Sautier, director of communications in the mayor's office who added that it was "an isolated, clumsy and unfortunate initiative" that lasted only one day. He further said that the step had been taken by the canteen staff without informing local authorities. "When we learned about it, we fell out of our chairs," Sautier said, adding that upon finding out authorities had ended the practise immediately. Serving non-pork meals to school children is a sensitive issue in La Belle France with Far-Right Nationalist leaders in past having tried to force school canteens from serving non-pork meals to students. La Belle France's former president Nicholas Sarkozy was also among centre-Right leaders to have opposed serving of pork-free options in schools. Headscarves and other forms of clothing linked to religious observances are banned in state schools and La Belle France had also banned the wearing of full-face Islamic veils in public in 2011. |

IMF boss Strauss-Kahn pulled off plane, arrested in sodomy probe |
2011-05-14 |
The French political bigshot who heads the International Monetary Fund was arrested for allegedly sodomizing a Manhattan hotel maid today -- getting hauled off an Air France flight just moments before takeoff from Kennedy Airport, police sources told The Post. Three Port Authority detectives pulled Dominique Strauss-Kahn from the plane's first-class cabin just two minutes before it was due to depart for Paris, the sources said. Strauss-Kahn, 62, was turned over to NYPD officers from the Midtown South precinct, and the case is being investigated by the Special Victims Unit. The trouble began around noon today, when a housekeeper entered Strauss-Kahn's room at the Sofitel on West 44th Street. Strauss-Kahn was in his bathroom, said sources. He emerged from the bathroom naked, said the sources, and grabbed her. Then, Strauss-Kahn allegedly threw the housekeeper on the room's bed and forced her to perform oral sex on him, said the sources. Strauss-Kahn let the maid leave -- and soon afterward, The NYPD's special victims unit is investigating the case, the sources said. His arrest tonight could force him to postpone a planned meeting in Berlin on Sunday with German chancellor Angela Merkel. Strauss-Kahn, a leader of France's Socialist Party, is the leading rival to President Nicholas Sarkozy in the 2012 election. Sarkozy was said in a news report yesterday to have begun a smear campaign against his rival that focused on his lavish lifestyle -- including Strauss-Kahn's purchase of suits from the same tailor who clothes President Obama. But Strauss-Kahn seems able to find trouble on his own. In 2008, he publicly admitted to "an error of judgment" for having an affair with an IMF subordinate. |

New poll favors French far-right politician over Sarkozy |
2011-04-05 |
An opinion poll in France has found that right-wing politician Marine Le Pen could defeat President Nicholas Sarkozy in upcoming elections, Le Parisien reported Saturday. The poll results, published in the Sunday edition of the French daily, showed the 42-year-old leader of the National Front party would receive 23 percent of the vote in the first of the two rounds of presidential elections due to occur in France next year. Center-right Sarkozy would only receive 21 percent of the vote, according to the poll. "This poll makes me believe that Nicolas Sarkozy will lose this presidential election," Le Pen said at a news conference in northern France. Part of Le Pen's platform so far has included comparing Muslims in France to an occupying force. Meanwhile, Sarkozy has initiated a national debate on the role of Islam in France, a move that some feel is designed to neutralize Le Pen. No margin of error was published for the poll, conducted between February 28 and March 3 with 1,618 people aged 18 and up. France's next presidential elections are set for May 2012. |

Hariri asked to be caretaker PM |
2011-01-14 |
![]() This is just as a caretaker. Hezbollah is working frantically to replace him with someone, anyone, who can then be bullied into shutting down the STL. Sleiman's announcement on Thursday comes as Hariri prepares to return to Leb to confront a government that has effectively collapsed following the withdrawal of the Hezbullies-led opposition bloc from his cabinet. In response to the crisis, Hariri cut short a visit to Washington DC, during which he met with US president Barack B.O.Obama. He was set to meet with Nicholas Sarkozy, the French president, on Thursday night before returning to Leb on Friday. Nabih KnobbyBerri, ... the Hizbullah sock puppet ... the Lebanese parliament speaker, said on Thursday that Sleiman will launch formal talks on Monday to create a new government. Officials have declined to say whether Hariri, whose coalition won a 2009 parliamentary election, will be asked to form a new government, or if someone else would be nominated. Leb's opposition, the so-called March 8 coalition between Hezbullies and other parties, including the predominantly Christian Free Patriotic Movement, Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic... resigned from the cabinet over disagreements stemming from a UN investigation into the 2005 liquidation of Rafiq al-Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister and Saad al-Hariri's father. There has been growing political tension in Leb amid signs that Hezbullies members could be indicted by the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Leb (STL). Ten ministers tendered their resignations on Wednesday after reports that Hariri had refused their call to convene a cabinet meeting to discuss controversial issues including the investigation. An eleventh member, Adnan Sayyed Hussein, later stood down from the 30-member cabinet, automatically bringing down Hariri's government. The request to convene a cabinet meeting came on Tuesday after Syria and Soddy Arabia, who have for months been attempting to act as mediators in Leb's political crisis, announced their efforts had failed. The standoff between Hariri's camp and Hezbullies over the UN tribunal has paralysed the government for months and sparked concerns of sectarian violence similar to the one that brought the country close to civil war in May 2008. |

Sarkozy to lose presidency: Iran cmdr. |
2010-10-20 |
[Iran Press TV] A senior Iranian commander says Nicholas Sarkozy's compliance with Washington and the Israeli lobby will come at the expense of his presidency. "Sarkozy's blind obedience to the administration of [US President Barack] and the Zionist lobby has brought about serious problems for the French and has distanced the French community from the country's honorable past," said the deputy head of Iran's Armed Forces Joint Chiefs of Staff. Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri stressed that the inefficiency of the French government will prompt the French people to seek to unseat Sarkozy, IRNA reported. France is the scene of violent protests against the government's new pension reform plan that would increase the minimum retirement age from 60 to 62. However, The infamous However... Sarkozy says the changes will go ahead as the French Senate is expected to give the final vote over the bill by the end of the week. "As the days pass, the cultural, economic, political and security troubles increase and the Sarkozy government is incapable of controlling its collapse," Jazayeri continued. The French government is too weak to bear the people's pressure and demonstrations and he will have no choice but to step down power, the Iranian commander said. A poll published in Le Parisien newspaper showed 71% of French people support the strikers. 71% want to retire early ... and have the other 29% support them. |

Report: Netanyahu ready to discuss Golan pullout |
2009-11-13 |
![]() In a 'relayed message' to Syrian President Bashar Assad through the French President Nicholas Sarkozy, Netanyahu said that "We have accepted the principle of withdrawing from the Golan; let's discuss the details," the Saudi-owned Arabic-language satellite TV channel, Al-Arabiya, reported on Thursday. The Al-Arabiya report highlighted that France and Israel agreed not to reveal the content of the message, which was coordinated with Washington, until it is relayed to Assad during his expected meeting with Sarkozy in Paris on Friday. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office on Thursday denied the report. "The Al-Arabiya report has nothing to do with reality. Nothing of this kind ever happened," said Netanyahu's office, in a response. However, a senior political source in Jerusalem on Thursday said that Netanyahu is considering French mediation for talks with Syria because of Sarkozy's close ties to both him and Assad. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that Israel would be prepared to hold immediate peace negotiations with Syria, as long as the talks were held without preconditions. Netanyahu made the remarks in a meeting with French counterpart, Sarkozy, in the Elysée Palace. Netanyahu's declaration regarding Syria came hours after Assad said he would not set any preconditions for peace negotiations with Israel. "Resistance to Israeli occupation has been at the core of our policy in the past and in future. We do not put forward conditions to achieve peace. We nonetheless do have rights that will not abandon," Assad said in a speech opening the fifth Conference of the Arab Parties entitled 'The Independent Arab Decision' in Damascus. |

Angela Merkel win ends Turkey's EU hopes |
2009-09-29 |
Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Free Democrats (FDP) are both hostile to the accession of the overwhelmingly Muslim country of 71 million. The CDU is against the Turks joining for cultural reasons while the FDP leader, and probable new foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle has said the country's economy is too far below European standards to integrate comfortably with other members. With almost three million ethnic Turks living in Germany, many as citizens, Germany also fears there would be a flood of immigrants after Turkish accession. Chancellor Angela Merkell has warned her Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call that Germany foreign policy was under review. An EU meeting to review the Turkish role in the unification of Cyprus in December will represent the first test of the policy. The Turkish reaction to the German election result has been open dismay. The country's liberal broadsheet Milliyet summed up the mood in Ankara's political circles. It said: "Turkey is the loser". The mass-market Aksam told Turks to be braced for a change in approach from Europe's biggest country. It said: "We should expect Merkel to sharpen her opposition to Turkey's membership." The German chancellor shifted the country's stance at the outset of her first government in 2005 to a more sceptical position and has said she would prefer if Turkey was offered a "privileged position" not membership. But the Social Democrats, her previous coalition partners, blocked any move to join the other big continental powers in rejecting Turkey. Turkey applied to join the forerunner of the EU as early as 1958 but bureaucratic hurdles have always kept it out. Nicholas Sarkozy, the French president, has already moved to torpedo Turkish accession to the bloc by stopping ratification efforts in five key areas. Brussels has imposed penalties on Turkey over its ban on flights and ships originating in the Greek-controlled part of Cyprus. Turkey's military still has an estimated 35,000 personnel in Cyprus, more than 30 years after it sent an expeditionary force to protect the Turkish population of the island. Cyprus became an EU member at the end of 2007 just after a reunification agreement collapsed and Brussels has since been embroiled in torturous negotiations to resolve the divide. Huseyin Ozgurgan, the foreign minister of northern Cyprus, has complained that the EU is a "negative player" in the reunification negotiations. |

Sarkozy to Netanyahu: Lieberman must go |
2009-06-30 |
[Iran Press TV Latest] France calls on Israel's hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dispose of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who is labeled as 'racist' by critics, a report says. The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has urged the Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu to dispose of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, a report says. During Netanyahu's meeting with the French president in Paris last Wednesday, Nicholas Sarkozy advised the Israeli premier to appoint opposition chairwoman Tzipi Livni in place of hardliner Lieberman, according to a report circulated by Israel's Channel Two on Monday. "With her and (Defense Minister Ehud) Barak you can make history. I have always accepted Israeli foreign ministers, and I loved to have Tzipi Livni here at the Elysee, but with (Lieberman) I can't," Sarkozy was quoted as saying. The Israeli Foreign Ministry in a statement censured Sarkozy's remarks and described them as "intolerable intervention in internal Israeli affairs." Meanwhile, the Member of Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Ahmed Tibi welcomed Sarkozy's comments, saying that he hopes "the international community has started to absorb the danger of the fascism being taught by Lieberman." Lieberman -- a West Bank settler who is seen as an ultra nationalist -- was dubbed 'racist' by his critics after making harsh statements about Arab Israeli lawmakers and refusing to recognize Palestine's statehood. |

Worst European crisis ever!!! |
2009-06-08 |
Europe is struggling through the longest and most difficult crisis ever in its history, and the long tunnel which began five years ago with the first European elections including its new Eastern European members has entered a new stage today with the casting of ballots in the midst of the world economic crisis. Preliminary data already show some clear, unmistakable signs, allowing for an initial analysis: Europeans are showing ever greater indifference with the lowest voter turnout ever (43.09%), more support has been given to Euro-sceptic and xenophobic parties, and the tendency is growing to vote as a form of protest against an economic crisis which continues to afflict the middle class and the poorest ones of all European countries. In addition, at the moment there seems to be a growing distance between representatives of European institutions and the perception that citizens of the EU-27 have of the European Union. From a strictly political point of view, what stands out is the strong showing by the PPE, which has kept its place as the top European party (263 seats out of 273). However, the left has suffered setbacks with the British Labour Party and the French Socialists, for both of whom support plunged, as well as with the first real defeat seen for Spanish premier Jose' Luis Zapatero. Left-wing parties are struggling to keep the positions they held five years ago and, according to the initial figures, will be getting around 155-165 seats in the European Parliament, a significant decline. However, the most noteworthy and worrying aspect from a political standpoint is that of growing disillusion on the part of European citizens towards European issues. In most EU countries, very little is ever said about the Union. In some cases European issues have disappeared entirely from election campaigns. However, if voters have abandoned Europe, then the same can be said of a large part of the candidates themselves. The rise in xenophobic and anti-European parties is worrisome but not new. This tendency was already clear five years ago in the elections held a month after celebrations in Dublin marking the EU enlargement from 15 member states to 25, with the entrance of many Eastern European countries. However, in five years little has changed in the attitudes held by European institutions and national leaders towards their own citizens. Europe has a mysterious aura surrounding it and is seen as something far removed from daily life for those eligible to vote. In addition to this difficult issue of distance, there is also the serious economic crisis which is hitting many Europeans with a dearth of future prospects and hopes, with lay-offs abounding and fear for the future, the desire to shut themselves in and to give up on the idea of a wider view or Community solidarity. These elements explain the success of the Dutch Freedom Party, xenophobic and anti-Islamic, which raked in 17% of votes (triple what it had in the 2006 general elections). Though one of the founding members of the EEC, it also buried European hopes for large-scale reform with the 'no' in the 2005 referendum for the draft of the EU Constitution. They explain - serving as an example for all - the growth of the nationalist, anti-immigrant and anti-European party the True Finns, which got 10% of votes compared with 0.5% in the previous European elections of 2004. In Europe's largest country, Germany, both Premier Angela Merkel's party and the Socialists saw support slide - perhaps the most significant example of a ''vote against the government'' seen across Europe with the exception of only two large countries: Silvio Berlusconi's Italy and Nicholas Sarkozy's France, both of which due to national contingencies. A few days will be needed to digest these results. However, Europe cannot afford to continue down this slippery road, ever more fragmented and indecisive on what it wants from the future, unable to play a leading role on the international stage. The Lisbon Treaty - which contains small but sufficient reforms for the overall effectiveness of the EU - must be quickly ratified and, once again, the final word will be given to Ireland, where widespread dissatisfaction has dealt a harsh blow to Brian Cowen's government. In the future, European leaders will have to find the courage to use strengthened cooperation in a systematic manner, as provided for by European treaties: small groups of pioneering countries which move forward in individual initiatives while waiting for the others to decide whether or not to follow suit. It is important to get back the spirit of the founding fathers and a renewed European spirit to get the EU back on its feet - with reforms, new institutions, and a common direction - as part of a global scene in a world that is changing rapidly. This is the only way to prevent today's crisis from becoming a collective shipwreck tomorrow. |
