Sudan: Teen Bride Who Killed 'Rapist' Husband Appeals Her Death Sentence
2018-05-26
[All Africa] A Sudanese teen sentenced to death after killing her husband as he tried to rape her has appealed the ruling amid growing support by celebrities and on social media.

Lawyers defending 19-year-old Noura Hussein said they filed the appeal on Thursday, according to U.S. rights group Equality Now, which has worked with the Khartoum-based Seema Foundation to bring attention to the case.

Hussein faces death by hanging after a Sharia court, which follows Islamic religious laws, found her guilty of premeditated murder for stabbing her husband as he tried to rape her in April. It sentenced her to death earlier this month.

The case has drawn condemnation by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
and international rights groups who have said Hussein is a victim of child marriage and acted in self-defense.

"Let it be known here today that Noura was a victim of child marriage, forced marriage, rape and denial of justice," said a statement by Hussein's defense team passed on to Equality Now.

"Noura and indeed the women and girls of Sudan have too often been treated as chattels to be traded and given away as though they are property and as though they have no rights," it said.

After her marriage ceremony, Hussein refused to have sex with her husband who raped her as three of his male relatives restrained her.

A day later, as he attempted to rape her again and she struggled to stop him, she stabbed and killed him.

Hussein had a 15-day period to appeal following her sentencing on May 10.

Celebrities from model Naomi Campbell to actresses Emma Watson and Mira Sorvino have promoted an online campaign to rescue the teenager, adopting the hashtag #JusticeForNoura in Twitter messages of support.

Nordic farms flourish on fur comeback
2014-02-19
[NEWS.YAHOO] Fur has made a comeback on the world's most important catwalks, fostering a thriving industry in the Nordic region to the dismay of animal rights activists.

In the 1990s, supermodels like Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell posed in the buff for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) under the slogan "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" -- part of initiatives that helped make fur politically incorrect.

Two decades later, mink and fox fur have become regulars in the most prestigious fashion shows.

According to www.fashionista.com, 70 percent of designers used fur in their fall-winter collections in 2013, a trend that seems set to continue in this year's shows.

Some professionals think the comeback may be due to the financial crisis.
Or maybe the weather...
"If you're in a situation where the economy is on a downward trend, politicians tend to focus on essentials -- how to get economic growth going again, securing jobs," Fur Europe lobby head Bo Manderup said. "The luxury of political correctness may have gone down the drain with the financial crisis."

In the last 10 years, global mink fur production has doubled, reaching 66 million skins last year, according to Finnish auction house Saga Furs.

Taylor prosecutor seeks 80-year sentence
2012-05-05
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] The chief prosecutor in the trial of Charles Taylor
The former President-for-Life of Liberia, of whom the best that could be said was that he wasn't quite as horrible as Prince Johnson, at least not usually.
has suggested an 80-year sentence after the Liberian former president's conviction for war crimes, according to a document made public Thursday.

The prosecutor said the term would be fair given Taylor's role in arming and aiding rebels who killed and mutilated thousands in neighbouring Sierra Leone during the 1991-2001 civil war, one of the most brutal conflicts in modern history.

"Should the trial chamber decide to impose a global sentence, 80 years imprisonment would be appropriate," said the document, signed by the Special Court for Sierra Leone's chief prosecutor Brenda Hollis in The Hague.

"The recommended sentence is appropriate to reflect the essential role that Mr Taylor played in crimes of such extreme scope and gravity."

Taylor, 64, was found guilty by the UN-backed court last week for aiding and abetting war crimes.
So he should be 144 years old when he gets out, except that this is Europe so he'll be 71...
In the first judgement against an ex-head of state by a world court since the World War II Nuremberg trials, Taylor was convicted on all 11 counts including acts of terrorism, murder and rape committed by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels, who paid him for arms with diamonds mined by slave labour.

Taylor will be sentenced on May 30 by the court, based in the leafy suburb of Leidschendam outside The Hague. Should he get jail time, it will be spent in a British prison.

The hearings, which saw model Naomi Campbell testify she had received diamonds from Taylor, lasted a liesurely four years, wrapping up in March 2011.

Liberia's Taylor awaits verdict in blood diamond trial
2012-04-25
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Liberian former leader Charles Taylor
The former President-for-Life of Liberia, of whom the best that could be said was that he wasn't quite as horrible as Prince Johnson, at least not usually.
awaits a verdict Thursday on charges of arming Sierra Leone's rebels in return for "blood diamonds" in the 1990s.

A three-judge bench will read the historic decision -- the first verdict against a former head of state by an international court -- at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in Leidschendam outside The Hague.

Taylor, 64, is accused of helping Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels wage a terror campaign during a civil war that claimed 120,000 lives between 1991 and 2001.

The trial, which saw model Naomi Campbell testify she had received diamonds from the flamboyant Taylor, wrapped up in March 2011.

Prosecutors alleged that the RUF paid Taylor with illegally mined so-called blood diamonds worth millions, stuffed into mayonnaise jars.

"He (Taylor) was really key in people's minds as to who was accountable for what happened," Elise Keppler, who monitored the trial for Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
, told AFP this week.

She added: "He is a former head of state, the first to hear a judgment against himself: it is unprecedented, it is a historic moment."

During the trial, prosecutor Brenda Hollis told the court: "Charles Taylor created, armed, supported and controlled the RUF in a 10-year campaign of terror against the civil population of Sierra Leone."

Charles Taylor war crimes trial enters final phase
2011-02-07
[The Nation (Nairobi)] Charles Taylor's war crimes trial enters its final phase on Tuesday after three years of gripping, often gruesome, testimony on the Liberian ex-president's alleged warmongering in Sierra Leone.

Prosecutor Brenda Hollis will present her closing arguments to the Special Court for Sierra Leone, insisting that Taylor armed rebels who staged one of the most brutal conflicts in modern times, in exchange for illegally mined diamonds.

"Charles Taylor created, armed, supported and controlled the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in a ten-year campaign of terror" that claimed some 120,000 lives until 2001, states the prosecution's final trial brief.

Thousands of civilians had limbs severed in one of history's bloodiest civil wars, which Taylor started "by sending ammunition, weapons and manpower to the RUF and its allies", according to the prosecution.

"The crimes suffered by the people of Sierra Leone would not have occurred but for Taylor's supervision and support for the RUF."

Taylor, 62, received "mayonnaise jars" of so-called blood diamonds from the RUF, a handful of which he presented to supermodel Naomi Campbell at a charity dinner in South Africa in 1997, according to testimony before the court.

"Many millions of dollars worth of ... diamonds, most mined by civilians under conditions amounting to slavery, were delivered to Taylor," states the prosecution brief.

Lawyers for Taylor, who has pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, will present their closing arguments on Wednesday.

Models may sashay to head of US visa queue
2008-08-03
Supermodels have it all - looks, money and some powerful admirers who are willing to change US law so they can pass more easily through border controls.

Anthony Weiner, a member of the US House of Representatives, is pressing for the creation of a new kind of visa that would keep the catwalks of New York and Los Angeles packed with exotic foreign beauties. With annual limits on the number of visas for foreigners with special talents, models find themselves competing against computer geeks and scientists for access.

Weiner, 43, denied he was campaigning in the hope of meeting Naomi Campbell or Giselle Bundchen. "Current visa laws are . . . a mess, and representative Weiner hopes by taking models out of the equation and into their own category to relieve some pressures on every area of business," said an aide.

Naomi Campbell: British Airways called me a "golliwog"
2008-06-29
SHAMED supermodel Naomi Campbell has accused British Airways staff of calling her a "golliwog" during the row that led to her arrest. She came out fighting after appearing in court on Friday to plead guilty to attacking two policemen called to calm the fracas on board a transatlantic jet.

In a television interview, the hot-tempered catwalk queen claimed her foul-mouthed out burst-during which she kicked and spat at police - was provoked by a member of the airline staff racially abusing her. She said: "I was called a 'golliwog supermodel'. I don't think that's really fair, do you?

"I was called a racial name and that was my reaction - nothing to do with the police but from British Airways. I took it too far but I don't apologise to British Airways. I think they're disgusting because there are people still waiting for luggage. I have travelled with them for many years and I think they have been harsh."

British Airways flatly denied her claims yesterday with a spokesman saying: "We do not accept any allegations of racism."

Campbell went berserk when she was asked to leave a Heathrow to LA flight because her bag had gone missing during the Terminal Five chaos in April. She told police officers on the plane: "It is because I am a black woman, you are all racists. I am going to sue you. I am going to f*** you."

And she blasted BA Captain Miles Sutherland ranting: "I can't believe you have lostmy f****** bag. You are a racist, you wouldn't be doing this if I was white." The 38-year-old, who has a track record for violent outbursts, avoided jail as it was her first criminal conviction in the UK. Instead she was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.

Campbell lashed out at officers and staff who attempted to remove her from the plane, claiming that she was being targeted because she was black. She pleaded guilty at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in west London to two counts of assaulting a police officer; one count of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and using threatening, abusive words or behaviour to cabin crew on a flight.

Her community service order stands for 12 months. In addition she was told to pay compensation of s200 each to the police officers she assaulted, a further s150 compensation to the aircraft's captain Miles Sutherland, and fines totalling s2300.

BA'S STATEMENT: 'British Airways does not accept any allegations of racism - we are proud of our diversity. We have strict policies concerning dignity at work and have long-standing training programmes on diversity and inclusion.'

Big Baby Supermodel Campbell charged over 'air rage'
2008-05-30
British supermodel Naomi Campbell has been charged with a string of offences after allegedly assaulting a police officer at London's Heathrow airport, her lawyer said Thursday.

Campbell, 37, was taken off a British Airways plane by officers on April 3 after she boarded a flight to Los Angeles in the US and was told that one of her bags was missing. She is charged with five offences -- three counts of assaulting a constable, one of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and one of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour to cabin crew.

The star will appear at in court in west London on June 20, her lawyer Simon Nicholls said, after she answered bail at Heathrow's police station.

"Miss Campbell is bitterly disappointed that the prosecutors have advised her she is to be prosecuted for various offences," Nicholls said in a statement read out on her behalf outside the police station.
She'll never grow up.
"She respects that decision and she hopes this matter is dealt with expeditiously."

The incident took place as Campbell was travelling through the airport's new Terminal 5 building, whose high-profile opening in March was marred by serious problems with the baggage handling system.

Last year, the supermodel was ordered to spend a week mopping floors at a New York City warehouse for hitting her maid with a mobile phone. She was sentenced in January 2007 after pleading guilty to reckless assault, and also ordered to attend a two-day anger management course and cover her victim's medical expenses.
Well, I guess they didn't require that she actually get a passing grade or something.

UK police escort Naomi Campbell off plane
2008-04-04
British police escorted supermodel Naomi Campbell off a U.S.-bound flight at London's Heathrow airport on Thursday, airport sources said. "Police were called to remove a passenger from a British Airways flight this afternoon," a spokesman for the British airport authority told Reuters.

Police said they had arrested a passenger on suspicion of assaulting an officer but declined to provide further details.

Airport sources identified the passenger as Campbell who was on a BA flight due to depart for Los Angeles.

Campbell spent five days mopping floors as part of a community service sentence in New York last year and was ordered to attend anger management classes after throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper during a row over a pair of jeans. The model has blamed her temper on resentment of her father who abandoned her as a child.

"Touch my monkey!" - Chavez tells Naomi Campbell
2008-01-08
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez in an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell predicted that the U.S "empire" is about to fall, called Jesus Christ history's No. 1 revolutionary -- and offered to pose topless.

"Why not? Touch my muscles!" the burly, 53 year-old former paratrooper said, when asked if he would follow the example of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who caused a stir last year with a series of shirtless pictures.

An actress and model of Jamaican heritage, Campbell was hired by GQ magazine to interview the left-wing leader, who is known for his tirades against the United States.

In the article, to be published on Thursday, Campbell describes Chavez as a "rebel angel," praises his singing voice and chats with him about the Spice Girls.
Read the rest and learn how Naomi has conquered her gag reflex.

Naomi Campbell interviews 'rebel angel' Hugo Chavez
2008-01-07
Never did like the bi+ch. She should just shut up and keep mopping in her high heels. And nothing else. >:-}

British supermodel Naomi Campbell has interviewed Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, describing him as a "rebel angel" who is unafraid to speak his mind but poses no threat to democracy.
Campbell was granted an audience with the outspoken left-wing leader as part of her new brief as contributing editor for British men's lifestyle magazine GQ, interviewing leading figures from politics, sport and entertainment.

She wrote in the article, out Thursday but extracts of which were released in advance, that she was aware her choice of subject would be controversial, but insisted she did not go to Venezuela for political reasons.

"I'd always heard Hugo Chavez was a people's president and I wanted to see if that was true... I didn't want to judge Chavez, or probe him for his political views, even though he gave them freely," she wrote.

"I simply went to interview Hugo Chavez the man," she added. The catwalk star also said she wanted to get him to donate to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which she represents, and see some of his social programmes.

Campbell said the Venezuelan leader -- who in November was told to "shut up" by Spain's King Juan Carlos I -- was forthright and "fearless, but not threatening or unreasonable".

Venezuelans also seemed happier than her last visit 10 years ago for a Sports Illustrated magazine photoshoot, she added.

"I hope Venezuela's relations with America will improve in the immediate future. Whatever the future holds, for me his role will always be that of a rebel angel," she said.

During her time in Venezuela, she was treated to Chavez's familiar rhetoric against the United States and in particular President George W. Bush.

Chavez -- who once described Bush as "the devil" during a United Nations General Assembly address -- said the US president was "completely crazy" and Condoleezza Rice was "secretary of state of a genocidal government".

Asked if he thought Bush wanted to kill him, he replied: "I think he does. Him and his companions."

Elsewhere, Chavez found time to defend Venezuela's human rights record and vaunt his country's oil reserves, but also gave his views on less weighty matters like fashion, pop music and the British royal family.

Cuba's Fidel Castro was the world's most stylish leader, he said ("His uniform is impeccable. His boots are polished. His beard is elegant"), he was aware of the newly-reformed Spice Girls and admired Britain's Prince Charles.

He also refused to rule out following Russian President Vladimir Putin's example and posing for topless photographs. "Why not? Touch my muscles," he reportedly told the supermodel.

The secret weapon of the stars - Israeli bodyguards
2007-12-11
Recently, Lohan unveiled her new bodyguard - an unnamed ex-Israeli Army specialist. Kevin Federline's lawyer hired IDF-trained Aaron Cohen, founder of the Beverly Hills-based IMS Security, to serve Britney Spears' camp with subpoenas for their custody battle. Even that dubious friend to the Jews, Mel Gibson, has relied on one to part the waters for him. For more than a decade, Avi Korein was Gibson's personal bodyguard before he opened his own Beverly Hills security firm, Screen International Security Services.

So what's the allure of these Israeli security mavens? According to industry experts, it's a combination of discretion and training.

"There's a mystique surrounding the Israeli military, based on their past performance and handling of information," says an American IDF-trained security specialist in the Washington, DC area who gives his name solely as "Josh" for security purposes. Josh served in the Israeli infantry as a designated marksman from 2004-6 through Mahal 2000, a preparatory program for non-Israelis who want to serve in its army.

"Discretion at all times is paramount with Israelis in regards to operational and personal security," he told ISRAEL21c.

"In America, particularly in the celebrity scene, there are occasional leaks of personal information," he adds. "But it doesn't happen as much in Israel. Privacy is of great concern. That attitude and conditioning translates to the private security field. Bodyguards revealing secrets about celebrity clients is considered unprofessional and in poor taste."

While celebrities might favor their ability to check wagging tongues, security firm CEOs seek out ex-Israeli military members for their training - particularly when it comes to high-alert situations.

"The Israeli intelligence gathering is among the best. I don't have to train them as much" as people from other backgrounds, says Emiel Fisher, the CEO of RDP Worldwide in Richmond, Virginia, who has handled security for touring rock stars. "They garner a lot of respect from the private security industry."

Page 2

Elijah Shaw, CEO of Icon Services Corporation in St. Paul, Minnesota, once hired an ex-Israeli commando to guard a famous actress who was being stalked on an international tour.

"I've used members of the Israel Special Forces - its equivalent of the Navy Seals - when I've had a specific, high-level threat," says Shaw, whose clients include Naomi Campbell, Michael Bolton and 50 Cent. "They operate at such a heightened sense of awareness. Because of the constant conflicts there, they're always on alert; they never switch off."

IDF-trained security specialists often see more similarities than differences between guarding celebrities and countries.

"Stalking is a form of terror," counter-terrorism expert Aaron Cohen told The Forward in October. "The formula is a lot like counter-terrorism, because you need to see who you're dealing with before you freak out."

Cohen is a Beverly Hills native who served in the elite Israeli combat unit Duvdevan, which specialized in tracking terrorists. He founded IMS - Israeli Military Specialists - a Los Angeles-based private security firm operating in Hollywood.

"The same security principles apply whether a person is going out to dinner or out of the country," adds 'Josh'. "Counter-surveillance is employed as a protective tool. The things that affect a client is not necessarily terrorism. The idea is to protect a client against harm or embarrassment. We focus a great deal on behavioral profiling - how to assess threats through situational awareness - for example, body language exhibited by one member of a group that contrasts the others can indicate the individual has a different agenda or intent. You take in everything and ID what doesn't belong."

With personal screening like that, it's no wonder that Hollywood's elite are putting their trust in this new breed of Israeli commando.
