IDF: Returning fire at Palestinian gunmen, troops critically wound Palestinian child |
2023-06-02 |
[IsraelTimes] Military ’regrets’ harm to civilians, says troops near settlement responded to gunfire, mistakenly hitting father, toddler; separately, soldier lightly hurt in shooting near Nablus A Paleostinian father and a young boy who were seriously maimed in an exchange of gunfire between Paleostinian button men and Israeli troops near an Israeli settlement in the West Bank were apparently hit by Israeli fire, the military said late Thursday. An earlier report had suggested the father and boy, a three-year-old, were likely hit by Paleostinian fire when the button men shot at an Israeli military post near the settlement. The Israel Defense Forces said that following an initial investigation, it appeared two Paleostinian button men opened fire on the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf (also known as Halamish), near the Paleostinian town of Nabi Saleh on Thursday night and that troops stationed at the adjacent army post on Route 465 returned fire. Moments after the exchange, a Paleostinian man and his child appeared at the entrance to Neve Tzuf with serious injuries to seek medical help. It appeared that "as a result of the gunfire by the [Israeli] forces, two Paleostinians were hurt," the military said in a statement, adding that it "regrets the harm" to noncombatants. A probe into the incident was underway, it said. The military was searching for the suspected shooters, the IDF added. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said its medics treated the three-year-old boy at death's door and the man in his forties at death's door. The toddler was rushed to the Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan by military helicopter, while the man was taken by the Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy to a hospital in the West Bank. The Israeli hospital said the young boy remained at death's door. The Rescuers Without Borders emergency service had initially said that the two Paleostinians arrived near the IDF post when it came under fire, and were thought to have been hit by the gunshots fired by the Paleostinian attackers. Separately, Israeli troops stationed near the West Bank village of Dayr Sharaf came under Paleostinian fire from "deep within the city of Nablus" early Friday morning, and one soldier was lightly maimed, the military said. The soldier was taken to hospital for treatment. The shooting on Thursday night came two days after an Israeli man was rubbed out by Paleostinian button men in the northern West Bank. Tensions between Israel and the Paleostinians have been elevated for the past year, with the military carrying out near-nightly raids in the West Bank, in the wake of a series of deadly Paleostinian terror attacks. The IDF said that during arrest raids early Thursday troops detained 19 wanted Paleostinians. During operations early Friday, two suspects were detained, including one suspected of opening fire at an IDF ambulance in the southern West Bank on Monday, the IDF said. |

It was the second shooting attack within hours, and came amid an uptick in attacks in the West Bank. Footage published by Paleostinian media outlets purportedly showed the moment of the attack. The gunman can be seen standing outside of his vehicle firing several times toward the military post. The Israel Defense Forces said troops returned fire before beginning a pursuit of the gunman, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. He was rubbed out in the nearby Paleostinian town of Dayr Dibwan. "During the pursuit, the suspect spotted the soldiers, got out of the vehicle and fired at them. The soldiers responded with live fire and neutralized the assailant," the IDF said in a statement. Images from the scene showed the dead gunman on the ground next to an SKS assault rifle, the gun apparently used in the attack. The man was named by Paleostinian media as Mojahed al-Najjar, 32, a former Paleostinian prisoner in Israel. The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said it was notified of al-Najjar’s death. The IDF said it was conducting scans in the area for additional suspects. No soldiers were hurt in the shooting attack, which came hours after Paleostinians shot at a military post close to the nearby village of Nabi Saleh in the early hours of Wednesday. On Monday night, the same military post near Ofra was targeted by Paleostinian button men, without causing any injuries. The military said it suspected al-Najjar was responsible for Monday’s attack, as well as other recent shootings in the area. According to the Paleostinian Ministry of Health, the deaders were identified as Wadee El-Houh (31), Hamdi Sharaf (35), Ali Antar (26), Hamdi Qayyem (30) and Meshal Zahi Baghdadi (27).
The view from Israel: IDF: Lion’s Den leader, 4 other gunmen killed, bomb factory destroyed in Nablus raid[IsraelTimes] Top terror group commander Wadee al-Houh ’main target’ of overnight operation in West Bank; 6th fatality reported near Ramallah; PIJ vows Dire Revenge, Abbas aide pans ’war crime’ Israeli soldiers killed the leader of a Nablus-based terror group and destroyed an explosives workshop in the West Bank city, the military said early Tuesday, in an extensive raid that sparked intense festivities, leaving another four button men dead, and over 20 injured, according to Paleostinian health officials. The Israel Defense Forces said 31-year-old Wadee al-Houh led the Lion’s Den terror group in Nablus and was responsible for numerous attacks. The group mourned him as a "leader" in a later statement. Blasts and gunshots rang out for over an hour in Nablus after a large convoy of IDF vehicles entered the West Bank city before 1 a.m. Tuesday. Nablus has been the focus of weeks of operations targeting the Lion’s Den terror group, responsible for a string of attacks on military positions, settlements and other targets. "A joint force of IDF soldiers, Shin Bet security service agents and anti-terror forces raided a hideaway in Nablus’s old city that was being used as a bomb workshop by central members of Lion’s Den," the IDF said in a statement released following the raid. The IDF said troops had used shoulder-launched missiles against the building. "The bomb workshop was blown up by our forces," the military said. The army said soldiers opened fire on a number of button men, citing Paleostinian reports of casualties. It said soldiers also returned fire when shot at during rioting in the city. "During the operation, dozens of Paleostinians burned tires and threw stones at troops," the army said. The IDF said no soldiers were hurt in the overnight operation. The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry reported that five Paleostinians were killed in Nablus and over 20 were maimed, several of them seriously. It also reported that a sixth person was killed in festivities with troops in Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah. The IDF said that man was shot by soldiers after hurling an bomb at them. The ministry named the fatalities in Nablus as Hamdi Ramzy, 30, Ali Antar, 26, Hamdi Sharaf, 35, Wadee al-Houh, 31, and Mishaal Baghdadi, 27. al-Houh was a senior and founding member of Lion’s Den, according to Israeli officials and Paleostinian media reports. al-Houh was also responsible for manufacturing bombs and procuring weapons for members of the group, the IDF charged. The IDF said al-Houh was a "main target of the operation." Separately, the military said Paleostinian button men shot up the Salem crossing in the northern West Bank early Tuesday. The checkpoint and adjacent base has been the target of numerous shooting attacks in recent weeks, leading Gantz to order it shut. The IDF said troops returned fire at the button men, and later arrested one of them at their home in the town of Rummanah. Two other wanted Paleostinians were detained in overnight raids in other areas of the West Bank. After the Nablus operation early Tuesday, the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah... said in a statement that its "fighters were involved in Paleostinian reports claimed that members of the PA’s security force were caught off guard by the raid and also shot up the Israeli troops, who shot back, resulting in injuries. The military, however, said it was unaware of any festivities with PA forces overnight. The raid was the latest in the city to target Lion’s Den, a recently formed group made up of members of other terror organizations that has claimed a slew of attacks in the weeks since Israel killed senior al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade member Ibrahim al-Nabulsi in late August. One Israeli soldier — Staff Sgt. Ido Baruch, 21, — was killed in an attack by the group and a second person was lightly injured in a separate assault on civilian vehicles. The other attacks have been ineffectual, but videos of the shootings uploaded to social media have helped it win it massive popularity on the Paleostinian street in a short period of time. On Saturday night, a Lion’s Den fighter, Tamer al-Kilani, was killed in the Old City of Nablus by an "explosion" attributed by the group and the Israeli press to a bomb remotely activated by the Israeli army. The military has not commented publicly on the claims. A defense official said Kilani, previously tossed in the calaboose I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece! in Israel, was directly involved in sending a Paleostinian man to attempt to commit a "large-scale" attack in Tel Aviv last month, among several more shooting attacks in the Nablus area. The Tuesday statement blamed Lion’s Den for the foiled attack in Tel Aviv, which was thwarted when the would-be assailant was searched by police in Jaffa, who found guns and improvised explosives in his bag. It also said the group was responsible for planting a bomb at a gas station in the settlement of Kedumim, attempting to carry out an explosives attack on the settlement of Har Bracha, and throwing a fragmentation grenade at troops stationed in Nablus. Tensions in the Nablus area have ratcheted up in recent weeks, with Israel’s military placing a cordon around the Paleostinian city to crack down on Lion’s Den. The pressure has been exacerbated by increasingly frequent assaults by settlers in the area angry over the army’s inability to rein in the groups, who has taken out frustrations on Paleostinians in Huwara and other towns abutting settlements. [IsraelTimes] Army launches manhunt, closes off entrance to nearby Paleostinian village after attack on soldiers near settlement of Halamish, northwest of Ramallah, amid uptick in violence Four Israeli soldiers were maimed after Paleostinians hurled an improvised bomb at a military post in the central West Bank on Sunday night, the military said. The incident came amid rising violence in the West Bank, and hours after three Paleostinians shot up a bus carrying soldiers, wounding seven people. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the IED was hurled at a military post near the West Bank settlement of Halamish and the adjacent Paleostinian town of Nabi Saleh. The four soldiers were listed in light condition and treated at the scene, the IDF said. The Rescuers Without Borders emergency service said one was taken for further medical treatment at the Tel Hashomer hospital in Ramat Gan after sustaining injuries from shrapnel. The military launched a manhunt for the suspects who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. According to Paleostinian media reports, the army closed the main entrance to Nabi Saleh, a frequent flashpoint between soldiers and Paleostinians. Tensions have escalated in the West Bank in recent days. Israeli security forces have stepped up arrest raids and operations and there have been several attacks by Paleostinian button men on military posts across the West Bank. Earlier on Sunday, three attackers opened fire on a bus carrying soldiers, seriously wounding the driver and leaving six troops with non-life-threatening injuries. Palestinian shot dead by Israeli troops in West Bank — PA |

![]() A Paleostinian man was rubbed out by Israeli soldiers near Nabi Saleh, a small town northwest of Ramallah, the Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said on Tuesday. The man was identified as Nihad Amin al-Barghouti, a resident of nearby Kufr Ein in his 20s. al-Barghouti previously served a term in Israeli jail for security offenses, according to Paleostinian media. The Israeli military said in a statement that troops had fired on "dozens of Paleostinians" who approached a reinforced army post next to Nabi Saleh and threw stones at soldiers. The soldiers "responded with riot dispersal means and suspect arrest procedure, which included live fire," the Israeli army said in a statement. "A report has been received about the death of a Paleostinian. The matter is being examined," the army concluded. But a Paleostinian witness who spoke to The Times of Israel rejected that account. According to the witness, whose house overlooks the military observation tower, only a handful of Paleostinians — "four or five" approached the tower. "These weren’t really festivities. The small group approached the tower. The soldiers descended from the tower and then they started firing — just one shot," said the witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal. "Afterwards, we went down to try to offer him first aid, but he had already lost consciousness," the witness said. When asked whether the Paleostinians threw stones, the witness did not deny it. But they why it was necessary for the soldiers to descend from the tower in the first place. "If they’d stayed in the tower, it was reinforced, they would have been in no danger. This proves that the intention was to kill. These were young kids — [al-Barghouti] was the oldest of them," the witness said. Al-Barghouti’s death comes as tensions between Israel and the Paleostinians have risen across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Clashes have erupted for the past several nights in the flashpoint East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Dozens of Paleostinians and right-wing Israelis have faced off, with police arresting some and firing sound grenades and high-pressure water to disperse the gatherings. Sheikh Jarrah has become one of Jerusalem’s tensest neighborhoods. Far-right Jewish nationalists have sought to evict Paleostinian residents in legal battles that helped touch off violence between Israel and the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terror group last May. Paleostinians in Sheikh Jarrah have recently been protesting the pending eviction of the Salem family. The eleven Paleostinians are set to be evicted by Jerusalem city councilmember Yonatan Yosef as early as March. Far-right Israeli politician Itamar Ben Gvir has set up a temporary "office" in the neighborhood, further stoking tensions. Ben Gvir said he was protesting the insecurity felt by Jewish Israelis living in Sheikh Jarrah, following the Molotov cocktailing of a home where a Jewish family lived. Two suspects were arrested earlier this week in connection with the Friday attack. On Tuesday, Israeli troops raided al-Quds University in Abu Dis to break up a protest against the Sheikh Jarrah evictions. In video from the scene, students and faculty could be seen running for cover as tear gas canisters arced through the air inside the campus. The Israeli army did not respond to a request for comment on the Abu Dis incident. |

First responders indicated that the alleged attacker had been evacuated in the same helicopter as the soldier after the attack near Halamish, a settlement also known as Neve Tzuf. The suspected attack came amid a recent rise in violence by Paleostinians against Israeli civilians and soldiers in the West Bank and Jerusalem, including a deadly shooting attack last month outside the illegal Homesh outpost, as well as an increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Paleostinians. The IDF has deployed additional soldiers to the West Bank in an effort to prevent further violence. |
