Police arrest six over Manikganj murder, killers posed as RAB
2020-08-17
[Dhaka Tribune] Police have arrested six people over the murder of a readymade garment (RMG) trader in Manikganj in mid-July.

The suspects were identified as Farhad Hossain, Jalal Uddin Sumon, Kazi Akbar Ali, Saharul Islam, Aminul Islam and Monir.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Gulshan division arrested the suspects between August 6 and Saturday night. They also seized two jackets with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) logos, handcuffs, walkie-talkies, an ambulance, a pistol and bullets.

RMG trader Sultan Hossain lived in a flat at Nakhalpara, Dhaka and his body was found hidden in a bush on July 16. The trader’s brother filed a case with Singair cop shoppe two days later.

Moshiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB Gulshan division, said the members of the gang would observe transactions at the banking area in Motijheel and target people who made large withdrawals.

They targeted Sultan in Motijheel on July 14 and followed him with a rented ambulance, as they had information that he had withdrawn a large amount in foreign currency.

The gang kidnapped Sultan from the Pallabi area of Mirpur by posing as members of RAB. They then took him into the ambulance and searched him for the foreign currency but did not find anything.

At one stage, Sultan began shouting for help and the abductors suffocated him inside the ambulance, according to the deputy commissioner.

After conducting a shadow investigation, DB arrested Farhad from Sakhipur, Shariatpur on August 6. Farhad confessed to the murder and detectives raided Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Paltan based on the information he provided, leading to the other arrests.

Mentally challenged schoolgirl raped in Narail, locals erupt in protest
2018-08-14
[Dhaka Tribune] A mentally challenged fifth grader was allegedly raped by a school committee member in Narail on Monday.

The girl, who studies at KemongalHata Government Primary School in Lohagaraupazila went on August 5 to the committee member Kamrul's shop adjacent to the school to buy chocolates at noon. Kamrul took the girl to the store room after alluring her with food. Here he confined the girl and raped her repeatedly.

After returning home, the girl reportedly complained of pain in the stomach to her mother.

Her mother then informed the incident to the father of the child who was living in Dhaka for earning livelihood.

On August 10, the father of the girl returned home and filed a case with Lohagara cop shoppe.

The girl was admitted to the NarailSadar Hospital on the same day.

Enraged locals including hundreds of students from different institutions staged protests in front of KemongalHata Government Primary School from 10.30 pm to 1.30 am on Monday demanding the arrest of the accused.

The father of the girl said Kamrul is a very influential person in the area and he was trying to manipulate the case with money.

When contacted, Md Ataur Rahman, chairman of the school committee, said they had decided to suspend Kamrul.

Probir Kumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of the cop shoppe, said Kamrul had fled the house after the case was filed.

"We are trying to arrest him soon," he added.

Dr Moshiur Rahman Babu, medical officer of NarailSadar Hospital, said the victim had been admitted to the hospital after five days of the incident.

The facts would be determined after getting medical reports, he also said.

Suspected militant hideout cordoned off in Narsingdi
2017-05-21
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has cordoned off a suspected holy warrior hideout in Narsingdi’s Gabtoli area.
Whoa! How is it that this was not concluded in a rapid crossfire in the small hours of the night, while all honest citizens are snugly asleep in their little beds?
However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
those inside the building claimed that they were not bully boyz when contacted by the Dhaka Tribune.
Even more off script. This will not do.
"We have surrounded an under-construction building
...a suitably proletarian location...
from Saturday afternoon
Eh? Since when is the RAB about during the day, except to receive an award for ridding the world of a substantial number of serious miscreants wanted on twelve systems?
on suspicion that a few bully boyz are holed up in the ground floor of the two-storey building," RAB 11 Commanding Officer Lt Col Kamrul Hasan said.
That would be information received, as they say, from Mahmoud the Weasel's fourth cousin twice removed, who is handling the family business in this locality.
Later, RAB-11 Assistant Director Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Alek Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: "Five to six bully boyz may be inside the residence. We have asked them to surrender, but there has been no response from inside the building."
No, no -- first the miscreants' Spidey Sense is triggered, causing them to exit their proletarian meeting place (strawberry field, brick manufactury, banana plantation, etc) shooting wildly, then the RAB respond with two precisely placed shots --one behind each ear -- at the miscreant in question, who dies promptly on The Spot. This time it has gone very, very wrong.
"We could not confirm the existence of any woman or child in the residence," he also said; adding that RAB and local police have cordoned off the residence and surrounded areas since 4pm.
"Yo, miscreants! Ya got any wimmen and kiddos in there?"
"Yes, Mr. jawanwallah: four wimmen and 17 kiddos, half each boys and girls -- Aishaullah is a hermaphrodite."
"Got it, thanks. *aside* They could be lying, Sarge -- I checked the form for not sure."
The decision to start an operation inside the den will be taken soon, after RAB high-ups from Dhaka reach the spot.
The Spot is a necessary part of the script...
Azar Bin Mahfuz, who claims to be the brother-in-law of one of those in the building,
...his wife married up...
spoke to news hounds after rushing to the scene upon hearing news of the raid.
The Mahamoud the Weasel clan inform in both directions, it appears; keeping their extensive offspring in braces and piano lessons is an expensive undertaking...
He alleged that those inside were madrasa students,
...Eh? What are they doing meeting in so proletarian a spot as a half-built building?
not holy warriors, and provided the contact number of his brother-in-law Masudur Rahman.

When contacted, Masudur told the Dhaka Tribune that he was in the building with four others. They are: Salahuddin, Moshiur Rahman, Mojibur Rahman and Abu Zafar.
You can't fool me. That last one is a Disney cartoon monkey.
Masudur claimed that none of them were bully boyz and that four of them had gone to the building to receive private tuition from Abu Zafar.
They have a madrassah, so why do they need a dangerous and dirty building site?
He added that the doors and windows of the building were unlocked,
...and, in fact, nonexistent...
but law enforcement officials were not allowing them to leave. He also denied having been asked to surrender by the officials.

The house is owned by Mainuddin, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Libya. His family had lived there before the death of his wife a year ago.

The building has been empty since then.

"One Salauddin rented the ground floor flat by introducing himself as a madrasa student one month ago. Five more people were seen residing with him in the house," said Nurul Islam, owner of a neighbouring shop.
Stranger and stranger, and without any conclusion whatsoever. Send the script back for a rewrite.

Five charged with Oyasiqur murder
2015-09-03
[Dhaka Tribune] At least eight members of banned myrmidon outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team were involved in the murder of secular activist Oyasiqur Rahman Babu on March 30, the Detective Branch (DB) of police said in the charge sheet submitted yesterday.

DB Inspector Moshiur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court showing 40 people as prosecution witnesses.

He named five Ansarullah members in the charge sheet since details about the three others -- Masum alias Masud, Sharif and Abrar -- were not found.

"They will be named in a supplementary charge sheet once we get details or arrest them," the IO mentioned in the charge sheet. It says the killers first planned to kill Oyasiqur in December.

General Recording Officer of the CMM Court Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain said: "The charge sheet will be produced before the court of Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman on Thursday [today] for next course of action."

The five accused are Zikrullah alias Hasan, Ariful Islam alias Mushfique, Saiful Islam alias Monsur, Akram Hossain Hasib alias Abdullah and Maulana Junayed alias Taher. Of them, Akram and Taher are on the run.

Of the others now in jail, Saiful was locked away

with firearms and machetes in his possession in Jatrabari area on March 23. Police claimed that Saiful along with Zikrullah and Arif were going to kill Oyasiqur on that day.

On the other hand, Zikrullah and Arif were held by some transgender people when they tried to flee after hacking Oyasiqur to death at Begunbari in Tejgaon Industrial Area. Another killer Taher expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

In primary interrogation, they claimed that a "hujur" (religious scholar) had professed to kill atheists while a "Boro Bhai" (senior brother, Abdullah) gave them Oyasiqur's photographs and the murder weapons.

The charge sheet says that Abdullah, who works as an organiser for the outfit, criminal masterminded the killing, and gave arms and training to the killers for three months.

A travel agency trainer by profession, Oyasiqur was an active campaigner of the ongoing war crimes trials and advocate of secular spirit.

In early May, a group called al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) grabbed credit for the murders of Oyasiqur and other secular activists since 2013. It is alleged that Ansarullah members are representing AQIS in Bangladesh.

The charge sheet says that the accused first planned to kill Oyasiqur after holding a meeting at Arif's house in Mirpur 11 area on December 15 last year. They also sat together at a house of South Kajla in Jatrabari some days before the killing.

Zikrullah is a student of Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong. Arif had been a student of the same madrasa and later became a student of Mirpur Darul Ulum Madrasa.

Arif was arrested in September 2012 from Raipura of Narsingdi during training at a myrmidon camp.

Three domestic helps flee judge's flat breaking window
2014-09-09
[Dhaka Tribune] Law enforcers yesterday rescued three children, who were working as domestic help at a flat of Additional District Judge of Narayanganj Niazi Shahidul Alam Chowdhury, from the capital's Shantinagar area.

They were rescued by the police around 3pm while hanging from a sun-shed outside a third-floor flat of the multi-storey building.

They were taken to the Victim Support Centre (VSC) after receiving
treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The trio were identified as Fatema Akther, 13, Kulsum Begum, 12, and Mohammad Shamim, 11.

They tried to get rid of torture of the landlord, Parul Akhter, sub-inspector of the VSC, told the Dhaka Tribune quoting the three.

She said: "We have already contacted with the parents of these children. They all are from Mymensingh. Among them, Kulsum and Shamim are
cousins while Fatema is their relative."

Police were informed by locals that three children had been stranded on a sun-shed holding a sewerage pipe of Kulsum Tower of Shantinagar. Then a team of fire service unit rushed to
the spot and recovered the children from the place safely, said Ataur Rahman, duty officer of fire service control room.

The children sustained minor injuries while climbing down using the pipe from the sixth floor. They came out of the flat after breaking the kitchen's window since the door was locked from outside.

Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna police, told the Dhaka Tribune: "The children informed us that Kulsum came to work in that house first about three years back. Fatema came around one year ago while Shamim joined a couple of months back.

They claimed that even though they used to work hard, the landlord used to torture them even for a minor mistake. They were even barred from contacting their families at home which prompted them to escape.

They had been planning to escape the flat for sometime, but could not be successful as their employer always go out locking the flat's gate.

The gate was locked yesterday too. Then with the help of iron rod and hacksaw blade they cut the window grill and used the pipe to climb down. Later they were stuck on the sun-shed of the third floor.

Asked about taking action against the landlord, the Ramna OC said they had already contacted with the wife of additional judge, Shamima Shahid. "They told us that they were also confused why the children tried to go out of building this way."

The couple stayed in the flat with their only child.

Moshiur added that they were verifying the claims made by the children. The police are also waiting for the family members of the children.

[Bangla Daily Star] Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday pressed charges against 13 members of banned Death Eater outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI)
Founded in 1984 by Fazlur Rehman Khalil and Qari Saifullah Aktar. The Bangla branch was established in 1992 with assistance from Osama bin Laden. Recruits come mostly from Deobandi madrassahs. HuJI and Fazlur Rehman Khalil are signators of bin Laden's declaration of war on the west.
including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan in two cases filed over the kabooms on a CPB rally in 2001.

Of the 13 accused, HuJI chief Mufti Hannan, Mufti Mainuddin Sheikh, Arif Hassan Sumon, Maulana Sabbir Ahmed, Maulana Shawkat Osman and Md Moshiur Rahman are currently behind bars while Mufti Abdul Hai, Shafiqur Rahman, Jahangir Alam Badar, Md Nur Islam, Mohibul Mustakin, Anisur Rahman and Rafiqul Alam Miraj are in Pakistain have been absconding ever since the incident.

Earlier in his confessional statement, Mainuddin had admitted his involvement in carrying out the attack, and said Mufti Hannan and several others were involved in this as well.

Of the cases, one was filed for killing five people and injuring 50 others while another was filed under the Explosive Substances Act following the kaboom on a rally of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) at the capital's Paltan Maidan on January 21, 2001.

CID Inspector Mrinal Kanti Saha, also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the cases, submitted two charge sheets to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka with a list of 107 prosecution witnesses.

During the investigation, 26 people including Mufti Hannan were tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
for their alleged involvement with the kaboom.

The names of 20 people have been dropped from the charge sheets as no evidence of their involvement could be found.

According to the charge sheets, the accused carried out the blasts on the pretext that the CPB members were "atheists".

Asked about the charge sheets, the then CPB president Monzurul Ahsan Khan, also the complainant of the cases, told The Daily Star that he was satisfied with charge sheets despite the fact that it took 12 years for the police to do that.

Soon after the blasts, police arrested 12 people but the CID, in its final investigation report submitted on December 17, 2003, cleared the arrestees of the charges as no "correct, impartial and reliable" evidence was found against them.

Later the home ministry ordered a reinvestigation into the incident following an application submitted by the CID in 2005.

Blogger Asif arrested
2013-04-04
[Bangla Daily Star] Detectives yesterday enjugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
blogger Asif Mohiuddin, who had been attacked by Islamist fanatics in January following alleged postings on the Internet "comments derogatory to Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!)".

The arrest comes a day after police captured bloggers Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, Rasel Pervez and Moshiur Rahman Biplob in the capital in connection with similar offences.

A team of Detective Branch of police picked up Mohiuddin around 2:00pm yesterday at his sister's Segunbagicha home, where he had been staying since January 13 when he was stabbed by fanatics at Uttara.

The arrests came amid strong criticism over the government's role, which many termed as "submissive", after some radical Islamist organizations threatened to unleash anarchy if the "atheist bloggers are not hanged".

Many think the arrests would add to the growing frustrations of the youths and online activists who had been agitating from the platform Gonojagoron Mancha since February 5 demanding death penalty for all war criminals. The three bloggers arrested Tuesday were affiliated with the platform.

Mollah Nazrul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Detective Branch, yesterday said, "We have arrested Asif as he had posted many pieces insulting Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!) and Islam on different blogs and pages."

Nazrul said, "He [Asif] had been continuing his activities even after being attacked."

Hours after the arrest of three bloggers and before his own arrest, Asif via facebook condemned and protested the arrests.

He said, "To drag religion into politics and playing with it like a football is the real offense towards religion. So separating religion from the state is the primary concern of the blogger community in Bangladesh, and also to save religions from being insulted."

'Outlaw' killed in 'shootout'
2012-11-04
[Bangla Daily Star] The ringleader of the outlawed New Biplobi Communist Party (NBCP)
We haven't had one of those for a while. I thought they'd finally gone extinct, but it looks like they are merely endangered.
was killed in a "shootout" between his accomplices and Rapid Action Battalion personnel in Dumuria upazila of Khulna early yesterday.
Hurrah! With the Rab on the case, we know the crossfire will be done right.
Deceased Shailendra Nath Biswas Shailan, 48,
A four-namer, though not one of them is Mohammed. Must've been rich.
was a listed criminal operating in the southwestern region of the country, said police. He had also been sentenced to life term imprisonment in a murder case.
Clearly an ambitious criminal type, though not up to the usual wanted on twelve planets standard. But read on, dear Reader, and perhaps more will be revealed.
On information that some outlaws were holding a clandestine meeting at Shalua Bazar in the upazila,
"Hist! Mahmoud the Weasel the 27th here! There's to be a secret meeting in the upazila!"
a Rab team raided the area around 3:30am, said Lt Commander Noor-e-Alam, operation officer of Rab-6, Khulna.

As soon as the team reached the spot,
...marked with an X, of course...
the outlaws opened fire on the Rab men, forcing them to fire back.
They would have preferred to negotiate a mutually agreeable outcome, but what can one do?
Well, they always do so well in that sort of thing, don't they?
That triggered a "shootout", the Rab official said -- a common version provided by the law enforcers after every such shootout when deaths take place.
Deaths do keep occurring around the Rab. It's because those miscreants will insist on opening fire the moment their Spidey Senses tingle.
After the criminals managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...
the Rab team found a man lying on the ground with bullet injuries, he said.
One behind each ear. The Rab were both shocked and appalled, poor dears.
The newest corporal had the vapours and had to be led away until he calmed down.
Local people identified the man as Shailen.

He was then taken to Dumuria Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
He's dead, Jim!
The body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

The Rab personnel recovered a 9mm pistol, a revolver and six rounds of bullets from the spot.
They will be cleaned until the sergeant can see his face in them by the newest corporal, then returned to their velvet-lined cases in the evidence room for next time.
Rab claims that a patrol car of Rab was also damaged during the "shootout".
Oh dear. Someone will have to do something about that. It is unlikely to be pleasant.
Shailen, son of Kalipodo Biswas of Sholua village in the upazila, was accused in 28 cases, including for extortion and murder filed with Dumuria Police Station, said its Officer-in-Charge Md Moshiur Rahman.
Ah hah! There's our wanted on twelve planets, and a Mohammed. It pays to continue reading.
The victim was the second-in-command of the NBCP until 2004. But after the killing of its ringleader Monoranjan Goshai Mrinal by his rivals at Bangaon in India's West Bengal, Shailen was made chief of the outlawed party, the OC added.

A few years back, Shailen fled to 24-Parganas in India where he was cooled for a few years
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
six months ago for his involvement in criminal activities. A local court incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
him for two months, said Moshiur.
"Sixty days or sixty dollars!"
"Arrrr! I can do sixty days standin' on me head!"

After he returned from India last month, Shailen started to reorganise his party, the police official said, adding that Shailen was reportedly killed by his rivals in Paschimbanga on January 30 this year. But the report could not be independently confirmed at the time.

'Shootout' victim's father sues OC
2012-04-02
Father of a man killed in a "shootout" with police last month filed a murder case on Sunday against 11 persons including the officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station in the city.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Moniruzzaman, after a brief hearing, ordered a judicial inquiry in the incident. The magistrate earlier recorded the statement of the complainant, Md Dadon Miah, took into cognizance the charges against the accused.

The accused are OC Anisur Rahman, Sub-Inspector Md Zahid, assistant sub-inspectors – Moshiur Rahman and Mozammel Hossain, and Jhut (garment by-products) traders – Nantu, Ayub Ali, Kuddus, Sentu, Bulu alias Ripon, Shamim and Sakir.

Police had earlier claimed that the 26-year-old Md Masud was killed in a "shootout" with the law enforcers on March 25.
I think we missed that one...
In his complaint, Dadon Miah alleged that Jhut traders –Nantu and six others – had a feud with his two sons – Masud and Asad for a long time over jhut business. As a result, the seven goons paid Tk 5 lakh to the OC to kill his son, adding that his son was a helper of ETC Paribahan Ltd, not an extortionist, he said.
Oh no, his boy was an honest jhut trader...
The complainant said on the night of the incident police called out of his son from their residence and took him to a place in the city’s Mirpur Zoo area.
Could have been worse, he could have been shot in a banana grove...
Later police killed Masud and then made a drama of ''shootout'' saying he was killed during an exchange of bullets between the law enforcers and assailants, Dadon Miah alleged.
That's about how it's done, folks. Will the courts in B-desh catch on or do they enjoy the decreased workload courtesy of the RAB?

50 hurt as JP men run amok
2012-01-29
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 50 people, including a politician, were hurt during a clash between Jatiya Party
...aka Jatiya Front; a political party established by Bangladictator Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1986 to lend a veneer of respectability to his rule. Since nobody was amused he was forced to resign by popular demand in 1990. The party remains in existence with about a dozen seats in Bangla's parliament...
activists and employees of Rangpur Medical College Hospital in the northern city yesterday over the politician's "demand" for jobs for his men.

Five truckload of stick-wielding Jatiya Party activists led by politician Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif, nephew of JP chief HM Ershad, went to Rangpur Medical College Hospital to demand 30 class-III and class-IV jobs for his party men around 12:30pm, sources and witnesses said.

This did not go well with the employees of the hospital and they set up a barricade between the JP activists and the hospital director's office. A clash ensued and law enforcers had to fire 40 teargas canisters and use truncheons to dispel the feuding sides.
This did not go well with the employees of the hospital and they set up a barricade between the JP activists and the hospital director's office. A clash ensued and law enforcers had to fire 40 teargas canisters and use truncheons to dispel the feuding sides.

Lawmaker Asif, eight journalists and seven coppers were among the injured, said Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Police Station. Of the injured, Asif with head injuries and a police sub-inspector were admitted to the very hospital while others received first aid.

Witnesses said the MP along with his party workers and followers went to the hospital to demand the jobs for JP men. After the initial clash at the barricade, employees of the hospital unitedly put up a resistance.

Around 1:30pm the JP activists tried to move towards the hospital again but police lobbed around 40 rounds of tear shells and charged truncheons on the JP activists and the hospital employees.

Officer-in-Charge Altaf Hossain said they tossed in the clink Abu Bakar Siddique, the son of an employee of the hospital, in connection with attacking the politician.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
Rangpur Medical College Hospital Director Toufiqul Islam told The Daily Star that Asif demanded 30 jobs for his men and as he refused, the MP and his men went to his office to assault him. He denied any irregularities in the appointments of the class-III and class-IV employees.

Lawmaker Asif refused to make any comment on the incident.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
JP Presidium member Moshiur Rahman Ranga and the party's Rangpur secretary general Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa denied allegations made by the hospital director. They too refused to comment on yesterday's incident.

Convener of class-III and class-IV employees union of the hospital Mafizul Haque said Jatiya Party leaders and activists demanded jobs in the hospital and mounted pressure on the director which led to an altercation between them and resulted in yesterday's clash.

The hospital authorities held exams on December 10 last year to appoint 186 class-III and -IV employees. The result was published two weeks later and their interviews were taken in December and January. It is now appointing the selected candidates.

On January 19 leaders of Rangpur Medical College Hospital Bangladesh Chhatra League

Police and family sources said a gang of 10 to 12 men went to Mizan's house around 12:30am and asked him to open the door.

Failing to get response from inside, the attackers broke open the door and entered the house around 1:15am. "They chopped and killed Mizan," victim's wife Doly Khatun told news hounds.

The incident took place within 10 to 15 minutes in front of Doly and her two daughters Mitu and Mili. The gang beat feet the scene exploding two bombs when the villagers started rushing to the spot, said locals.

Police Super of Chuadanga Nazrul Islam said they suspect issues over the up coming Union Parishad election might appear to be the reason behind the killing.

According to local sources, several groups are active to secure the union parishad chair. Deceased Mizan had rivalry with one of the aspirants, Nurul Islam who is also an incumbent UP member.

When the offenders reached the spot, Mizan repeatedly phoned Hogoldanga police camp and Damurhuda Police Station for help but received no response, claimed Doly.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Damurhuda Police Station, Sikdar Moshiur Rahman said he received Mizan's phone call around 1:0oam when he was going to take meal.

"I started for his house, about 10 kilometres off the cop shoppe, soon after I received his call and reached there around 1:50am. But I found Mizan dead," added the OC.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Hogoldanga police camp Monsur Ahmed denied receiving any phone call from Mizan on that night.

Our Kushtia correspondent reports, Mizan was made the acting UP chairman after the elected chairman, Moniruzzaman Moni was suspended on charge of corruption and landed in jail in 2007.

Moni secured bail in 2009 and since then he has been living in Dhaka. He is also the organising secretary of Damurhuda upazila unit BNP.

Arrestee Rokunuzzaman, who was jugged twice in 2007, is the younger brother of Moniruzzaman Moni, said police.
