TTP extends ceasefire until May 30 as talks continue in Afghanistan
2022-05-19
[Dawn] The outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) on Wednesday announced an extension in a ceasefire with the government of Pakistain as talks with the Death Eater group continued in Afghanistan.

In a statement shared with the media via WhatsApp, TTP front man Mohammad Khurasani said that the ceasefire would remain in place until May 30.

"Talks are under way between the committees of the TTP and the government of Pakistain," he said in the statement, adding that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan — the Afghan Taliban — was mediating between the two sides.

Khurasani went on to say that a 32-member committee of the Mehsud tribe in South Wazoo and a 16-member committee from the Malakand division also held talks with the TTP on May 13 and 14.

"The committees called for a ceasefire by both sides in light of the ongoing talks. Therefore, keeping in view the demand, both sides have announced a ceasefire until May 30," he said.

The Afghan Taliban also confirmed the talks in Kabul, with government front man Zabihullah Mujahid saying the Islamic Emirate played the role of a mediator.

In a series of tweets in Pashto, he reported "significant progress" in the talks and also shared that a ceasefire had been agreed upon.

"The Islamic Emirate Afghanistan, in a good faith, is making efforts to take the process forward. We hope that both sides will be accommodating and show flexibility," he said.

Dawn.com reached out to Pak officials for comment and is currently awaiting a response.

A Pak embassy source in Kabul confirmed the visit of the Pak delegation but remained tightlipped about the composition of the team and the details of the talks.

TTP attacks on Pak soil have of late witnessed an uptick.

The previous PTI government and the TTP had agreed to a month-long ceasefire to hold talks last year. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the Death Eater group had declined to extend the ceasefire after the one-month period ended, accusing the government of failing to honour the decisions reached earlier.

Earlier this month, AFP had reported that another ceasefire, agreed for the Eid period, had been been extended until May 16 in order to hold peace talks. A TTP letter outlining the truce had told fighters "not to violate the decision taken by the central command".

Reports had also emerged about the release of two key TTP leaders, Moslem Khan and Mahmood Khan, and their subsequent handover to the Afghan Taliban. Both leaders were on the list of over 100 detainees, the release of whom is one of the group's key demands.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the TTP front man did not comment on the matter when asked by Dawn.com. "I do not have any confirmed information about the prisoners," Khurasani said.

Two Pak Army soldiers martyred during gun battle with terrorists in South Waziristan: ISPR
2022-04-27
[Dawn] Two Pakistain Army soldiers embraced martyrdom in the Sararogha area of South Wazoo district during a shootout with terrorists, the military's media affairs wing said on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), armed snuffies attacked the soldiers in the Sararogha area, prompting immediate retaliation from the troops and an intense exchange of fire ensued.

The soldiers, after fighting gallantly among others, bit the dust, the statement said.

The martyred soldiers have been identified as 26-year-old Lance Naik Umar Ali Khan, a resident of Bannu; and 23-year-old Naik sepoy Muhammad Siraj ud Din, a resident of Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
The military said a clearance operation was being carried out in the area.

"Pakistain Army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve," the ISPR added.

On April 23, three soldiers were martyred in the Dewagar area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's North Waziristan district during an exchange of fire with snuffies from across the Afghan border.

Similarly, in January this year, ten soldiers were martyred after snuffies attacked a security forces' checkpost in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
's Kech district.

The ISPR had said the "fire raid" by snuffies occurred on the night of Jan 25-26. One terrorist was also killed in retaliatory fire by the forces.

Students Of Pakistani Madrassa Beheaded Their Female Teacher
2022-04-06
[MEMRI.ORG] According to Pak media reports, three female students of a religious madrassa in the Pak town of Dera Ismail Khan
... the Pearl of Pashtunistan ...
beheaded their female teacher because a 13-year-old female relative of theirs had dreamt that Muhammad, founder of Islam, had told the relative that the teacher had committed blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
and ordered that she be beheaded. Some Pak media reports have avoided mentioning Muhammad's name, while other reports said that the attackers were teachers. The victim has been identified in some reports as S. Bibi or Safoora Bibi.Roznama Mashriq, an Urdu daily, reported: "At 7 am on Tuesday [March 29, 2022], three female students — Razia Hanifa and Ayesha Noman, daughters of Allah Nawaz; and Umra Aman Hanifa, daughter of Deen Badshah belonging to the Mehsud tribe and residents of Anjumabad area — overpowered their 18-year-old teacher 'S' Bibi, resident of Tiarza in South Wazoo and currently resident of Nawab Multan
...Home of the Multan Sultans...
Road Dera, at the gate of the madrassa and beheaded her by mercilessly running knives on her throat."

The gruesome murder of the female teacher bring attention to the controversial blasphemy laws in Pakistain, where in December 2021 a mob burned alive Sri Lankan factory manager Priyantha Kumara, who had been accused of blasphemy.

The headline in Roznama Mashriq reads: "Three Female Students Of Madrassa Murdered Female Teacher After Having A Dream." A sub-headline reads: "Describing the dream, a female student declared that the female teacher was a blasphemer, after which the three female students beheaded the female teacher."

A report in Dawn newspaper named the three girls who committed the crime: 24-year-old Umra Aman, 21-year-old Razia Hanifa aka Hanifia, and 17-year-old Aisha Noman. All three were taken into police custody. As per the statements that they gave the police, "a religious personality appeared in the dream of one of their relatives — a 13-year-old girl — and said the teacher had committed blasphemy" — the Dawn report noted.

Another report in the Urdu daily Roznama Jang confirmed this account: "A 13-year-old girl who is a relative of the three women told them that she had dreamt that the victim had blasphemed against the religion [of Islam], based on which the order for beheading was given [in the dream]." Police have arrested the 13-year-old girl and the three students.

According to a police statement: "The three accused ladies have so far disclosed that one of their relative, about a 13-year-old girl, had seen a dream last night [preceding to March 29] that the Prophet [Muhammad]... had directed them that the victim had committed blasphemy against the prophet and that the prophet had ordered them to slaughter the victim."

According to the Samaa TV report, the female students were radicalized by Islamic holy mans opposed to Maulana Tariq Jameel, a Sunni religious scholar who belongs to the revivalist group Tablighi Jamaat
A peaceful group of itinerant Deobandi preachers who form one of al-Qaeda's recruiting arms...
and is wildly popular for his television speeches on religious and non-religious issues delivered to Moslem audiences across the world via the Internet. "The three women accosted the victim outside the seminary and accused her of being impressed by religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel and [of] committing blasphemy," the police statement noted.

Police Officer Najam Hasnain Liaquat said that the name of the 13-year-old girl who reportedly had the dream was Umema. A controversy had been ongoing, the police officer noted, between two religious seminaries for women situated in Dera Ismail Khan, the headquarters of Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Afghanistan
Taliban victory in Afghanistan is victory of entire Muslims: TTP leader
2021-07-28
And if they do not win?
[KhaamaPress] The leader of Tahrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) Noor Wali Mehsud
...the fourth Number 1 of the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, he was tapped for the honour after his predecessor was dronezapped in 2018. A member of the Mehsud tribe of South Waziristan, the right reverend mufti (a title he earned by acquiring a diploma from a Pakistani madrassah, impressive in a society where most are completely illiterate) is especially keen on the hospitality aspect (to domestic and foreign jihadis) of Pashtunwali ...
appeared in a TV interview for the first time ever and said that their relations with the Afghan Taliban are based on brotherhood, sympathy, and Islamic principles.
He seems to prefer the turban to the pie-hat
Mehsud was interviewed by CNN
...the organization formerly known as the Cable News Network. Now who knows what it might stand for...
through intermediaries somewhere along the Pak-Afghan border.

The TTP leader acknowledged that the victory of the Afghan Taliban in Afghanistan is not limited to the country but it is a victory for the entire Moslem people in the world.

The victory of the Afghan Taliban is voiced at a time when nearly half of the Afghan districts have fallen to the fighters.

Earlier, US CENTCOM Commander General Frank McKenzie had said that the Taliban are pretending their victory is inevitable which he believes is not the case indeed.

The Pak Taliban’s leader though claims their core objectives to be fighting Pak Security Forces and gaining control over the Pak tribal regions, they have too conducted heinous attacks in Afghanistan close to the border with Pakistain.

Their bloodiest attack in Afghanistan was that on a base in 2009 in which seven CIA officers and contractors were killed in Khost province
... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. Khost is populated by six different tribes of Pashtuns, the largest probably being the Khostwal, from which it takes its name...
bordering Pakistain.

As per political analysts, the Afghan Taliban’s so-called victory in Afghanistan will harm Pakistain as the latter will face an influx of Afghan refugees in case civil war erupts.

, a paramilitary force which has been fighting snuffies in the tribal districts. Officials said that gunnies used light and heavy weapons in the attack.

The martyred soldiers were identified as Naib Subaidar Shahid Anwar, Naik Ahmad Khan, Lance Naik Shehryar and Sepoys Ayub and Shahzad and the injured as Shahid Afzal.

No group has accepted responsibility for the attack yet.

A resident of Sara Rogha, Iqbal Mehsud, told Dawn that heavy firing started late night and continued for a long time. The local people came out of their houses after hearing gun shots.

Later, police and paramilitary forces conducted a house-to-house search operation in the area to arrest perpetrators of the attack.

Sara Rogha was cleared of gunnies after security forces conducted Operation Rah-e-Nijat in 2009.

However,

recently attacks have taken place on security forces in the areas of Ahmadzai Wazir and Mehsud tribes of South Waziristan district. Two soldiers were martyred and five others injured when an improvised bomb hit their vehicle and went kaboom! near Wana, the administrative headquarters of South Waziristan, on Sunday night.

Officials said that snuffies had also suffered heavy casualties in festivities with the security forces, which had resulted in the killing of 60 terrorists, including 10 key leaders.

Following an attack on security forces, the district administration imposed curfew in Wana and its adjacent areas on Wednesday.

Residents said that the administration lifted curfew on Friday after negotiations with the local elders. Earlier local people staged a demonstration near Wana to protest against curfew.

Polio mess
2019-12-31
[Dawn] THE outgoing year has proved a devastating one for the anti-polio campaign. As 2019 progressed, reports about the number of polio cases and the mismanagement of the campaign itself went from bad to worse. At least 119 cases have been reported so far, making the previous year’s tally of 12 look almost paltry by comparison. What is also unnerving are the reports of the large number of children who were missed in the vaccination drives. Health authorities in Sindh have revealed that out of the 9m children targeted in the recent polio drive earlier in the month, some 297,000 children were not vaccinated against the crippling disease. The highest number of children who were not administered the vaccine were from Larkana division, followed by Hyderabad division, Shaheed Benazirabad and then Mirpurkhas. Though the number of children may not seem that high given the target of 9m, there are reasons why the matter should still be of concern. The first is that polio officials in Sindh had claimed at the conclusion of the immunisation drive that they had achieved ‘101pc coverage’. In fact, this puzzling assertion was not limited to Sindh; even the Ministry of National Health Services claimed that 99pc children under the age of five had been immunised across the country in the latest vaccination drive.

The other reason is the constant emergence of new polio cases from Sindh and KP, even in winter that is usually seen as as the low-transmission season. Immunisation drives carried out in the colder months are important for building up herd immunity in children, which is more difficult to achieve during the summer. The fact that polio cases keep emerging is a sign that immunisation drives carried out earlier in the year may also have missed their intended targets. The battle against polio is long and Pakistan has just begun its struggle anew. Perhaps it is time to review our anti-polio efforts and make them more transparent and credible for the collective benefit of millions of children across the country.

Wana hospital official kidnapped
2019-09-13
[DAWN] The in-charge of Wana TB hospital was kidnapped by masked button men on Wednesday from Wana, the headquarters of South Wazoo tribal district.

The local administration confirmed the incident and said that Dr Noor Khanan Wazir was kidnapped by the button men travelling in a non-custom-paid vehicle.

A bigwig said that security forces cordoned off the area soon after the incident and started a search operation. However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
nobody was arrested till the filing of this report.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister’s adviser on merged district Ajmal Khan Wazir said that the provincial government had directed the deputy commissioner and district police officer of South Waziristan to take immediate steps for safe and speedy recovery of the kidnapped doctor.

Dr Noor Khanan hails from the Ahmadzai Wazir clan. He is the brother of Dr Maulana Taj Mohammad Wazir and son of former MNA Maulana Noor Mohammad.

Maulana Noor was killed in a suicide kaboom on a mosque in Wana in 2010 when he was giving Koran lessons to his students. At least 35 other people were also killed in the bombing.

Both the children are yet to see their first birthday. With the addition of these cases ‐ one each from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh ‐ this year’s total number of victims of the crippling disease has reached 62, the highest since 2015.

Twelve cases were reported in 2018, while only eight children had been tested positive for the virus in 2017.

About the latest case from KP, an official of polio virology laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, requesting anonymity said: "It was a clear case of refusal."

The victim was a 10-month-old boy. The case was detected in South Waziristan.

‐ on Monday. The campaigns of various lengths will span over the next 7 days.

Previous attempts at such campaigns and use of the anti-polio vaccine have been met with resistance amongst some parts of the country which has led to many children not being vaccinated against the disease.

This lack of control has caused Pakistain to be one of three remaining nations ‐ the other two being Afghanistan and Nigeria ‐ that are still fighting polio.

Most recently, five new cases of polio have brought the total number up to 58 this year. This indicating a sharp increase of 383.33 per cent from last year’s figure of 12.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
showed "serious concern" over the recent spike in polio cases in the country and directed federal and provincial government officials to undertake effective awareness and immunisation campaigns so that the disease can be kept in check.

The premier also announced that he will start leading the polio programme from November.

vaccination campaign starting from Aug 26 in protest against the government’s failure to construct a bridge over a stream near their village.

Shamankhel rustics told Dawn on Friday that absence of bridge over the stream was causing them great distress as the locals, including children, had to cross the stream to reach markets and schools located on the other side. They said when it rained the stream overflowed, cutting them off from rest of the areas.

The rustics said they would boycott the anti-polio campaign due to government’s apathy towards their plight. They demanded that the government immediately construct a bridge over the stream.

Miraj Mehsud, 24, told Dawn that due to absence of a bridge over the stream their children could not attend school. He said some pregnant women died for want of medical treatment as crossing the stream was an uphill task for people, particularly for women.
