[FoxNews] U.S. Indo-Pacific Command says 3 defense contractors also involved in fatal crash

A U.S. military service member and three defense contractors died Thursday in the Philippines after their surveillance flight crashed, officials say.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said the aircraft contracted by the Department of Defense went down in the southern province of Maguindanao del Sur
…in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Moslem Mindanao. Between resentful remnants of the the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF — get your snickers out, dear Reader, then we’ll go on) and ISIS-linked Daulah Islamiyah, successor to the infamous Maute Group, the region remains a hotbed of Islamic militancy…
"The incident occurred during a routine mission in support of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation activities," U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement to Fox News.

"We can confirm no survivors of the crash. There were four personnel on board, including one U.S. military service member and three defense contractors," it added.

The aircraft involved in the crash was a U.S. Marine Corps Beechcraft King Air 350, a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The names of those involved are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Windy Beaty, a provincial disaster-mitigation officer, told the Associated Press that she received reports that residents saw smoke coming from the plane and heard an explosion before the aircraft plummeted to the ground about half a mile from a cluster of farmhouses.

A water buffalo on the ground was also killed as a result of the plane crash, local officials said.

U.S. forces have been deployed in a Philippine military camp in the country's south for decades to help provide advice and training to Filipino forces battling Muslim militants, the AP reported.

The region is the homeland of minority Muslims in the largely Roman Catholic nation.

bandidos Lions of Islam in the southern Philippines over the weekend. The military said suspected members of Daulah Islamiyah, a hard boy group, waylaid troops from the 3rd Cavalry of the 40th Infantry Battalion on Sunday in Maguindanao del Sur province, a hotbed of Islamic militancy. The troops were returning to base after distributing supplies to villagers near the town of Datu Hoffer.

"We strongly condemn the cowardly ambush that targeted four of our courageous soldiers in Maguindanao del Sur on March 17," Marcos said in a statement. "The despicable act only strengthens our resolve to eradicate terrorism from the region and our entire nation."

Marcos said his administration remained "resolute in our pledge to ensure that justice is swiftly served" for the fallen troops. He said he has instructed the military to quickly release financial assistance to the families of the fallen soldiers.

Reports reaching Marcos’ office said the troops had left a remote village where they had distributed food for residents in observance of Iftar, the breaking of the daily fast that Moslems observe during Ramadan.

Leaders of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Moslem Mindanao, which includes Maguindanao del Sur, did not comment on the attack as they had not seen a report about it, according to military officials.

The autonomous region is home to a fragile peace between Manila and former Moro Islamic Liberation Front separatist guerrillas, who administer BARMM. The region has struggled with violence since its birth in 2019.

On Monday, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. extended his condolences to the families of the four "brave" soldiers who were killed. He said they were ambushed by at least 10 gunnies.

"The AFP vows to hunt down the perpetrators and neutralize these ruthless killers to finally put a stop to their violent mostly peaceful acts that disrupt peace and stability in the region," Brawner said, referring to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Brawner said the military efforts would focus on members of Daulah Islamiyah, which literally translates to the "Islamic State." It includes fighters from several Filipino hard boy factions, including the Maute Group, which had provided men and logistics during a five-month siege of Marawi city by pro-IS fighters in 2017.

That siege, considered by security analysts as the biggest attack by the Islamic State in the region, was meant to take Marawi by force to make it the base in the region. Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern fighters attacked Marawi, leading to a five-month battle that killed at least 1,200 hard boys, military, police and civilians.

Sunday’s attack came a little more than two months after two army intelligence operatives were killed in an ambush while gathering information against suspects linked to a bombing during a Catholic Mass in Marawi city in December 2023 that left four dead.

faceless myrmidons were killed and four government soldiers maimed in fierce fighting in the southern Philippines on Thursday, the military said Friday. The gun-battle between members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-Maute) and soldiers with the 103rd Infantry Brigade broke out in the late afternoon in Piagapo, a remote town in Lanao del Sur province, military officials said.

The soldiers were on a mission to hunt down two suspected DI-Maute snuffies who had been identified as the main perpetrators of a bombing that killed four people during a Catholic worship service at a university gymnasium in southern Marawi city in early December.
That would be the attack on Mindanao State University.
According to military officials, the Filipino snuffies were apparently acting under the instructions of the Islamic State, which had earlier owned up to the attack.

"During the military operations the troops killed eight enemies," Brig. Gen. Yegor Rey Baroquillo Jr., commander of the 103rd, told BenarNews. After the firefight, troops retrieved the bodies of the slain bad boys, he said.

Baroquillo said four members of the Scout Rangers, who were maimed in the fighting, were brought to a local hospital. He did not divulge the extent of their wounds.

He said the troops were after the Marawi bombers and that search operations were focused on three Lanao towns believed to be strongholds of the DI-Maute: Pantao Ragat, Poona PIagapo and Munai.

Brig. Gen. Anthon Abrina, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, told BenarNews in a phone interview that "we are on heightened, red alert status following the encounter Thursday evening."

Troop reinforcements have been brought in and several checkpoints were established along the national highway leading to the areas "to ensure the safety of civilians in their respective communities," Abrina said.

The towns in Lanao are near the city of Marawi, where the bombing took place.

Military chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has blamed the DI-Maute group for the bombing, saying it was carried out as Dire Revenge for a military operation elsewhere in the south that left over a dozen snuffies killed.

Two of those killed were identified as Mundi Sawadjaan and Jalandoni Lucsadato. Sawadjaan has been identified as a sub-leader of the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. , another Islamic State-linked group in the southern Philippines.

He was also the nephew of the late Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, who was thought to be the group’s leader before he was killed in 2020. The elder Sawadjaan at one time was also named as the IS leader for the Philippines.

Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan also criminal masterminded a January 2019 bombing at a Catholic church on southern Jolo island that killed 23 people including an Indonesian couple blamed for the suicide kaboom, according to Philippine authorities.

Philippine military: IS-linked militants kill 2 army intelligence operatives
2024-01-07
[BenarNews] Filipino Islamic murderous Moslems ambushed and killed two army intelligence operatives who were gathering information in the southern Philippines against suspects linked to a deadly bombing in Marawi city last month, the military said Thursday.

The soldiers were among three staff sergeants seeking information about the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group in Munai, a remote town in Lanao del Norte province on Wednesday, said local infantry chief Maj. Gen. Gabriel Viray III.

The third soldier survived the attack.

"They conducted intel gathering, information gathering. While returning [to their base], they were ambushed," said Viray, referring to the 51st Infantry Battalion members.

The soldiers, who wore civilian clothes and rode two cycle of violences, were attacked by at least six members of the "terrorist group," Viray said.

"Two of them died while the other is safe," he told news hounds, adding their families had been notified.

" in the local language and has fighters from several Filipino murderous Moslem factions. One of those groups is the Maute Group, named after the Maute brothers who led and provided logistics support during a five-month siege of the southern city of Marawi by pro-Islamic State (IS) murderous Moslems in 2017.

WORSHIP SERVICE BOMBED
On Dec. 3, a Sunday, murderous Moslems bombed a Catholic Mass taking place at a university gymnasium in Marawi, killing four people and injuring 50 others.

IS grabbed credit for the attack, which came slightly more than six years after fighters from Southeast Asia and the Middle East were expelled from Marawi after failing in their bid to make the lake shore city their caliphate in the region. The Philippine military, backed by the U.S. and Australia, retook the city on Oct. 23, 2017, following five months of fighting that left 1,200 murderous Moslems, soldiers and civilians dead.

Military and regional police have been on heightened alert and have launched a large-scale manhunt for two leaders who are believed to be the criminal masterminds of the attack on the church service in December, military officials said.

In addition, troops killed one of five suspected IS fighters who attacked an infantry camp near the town of Maguing, also in Lanao. The pre-dawn attack on Dec. 28 was repulsed after a few minutes and the body of the unidentified dead murderous Moslem, along with an assault weapon and ammunition, were left behind, the military said.

group have been killed in fierce fighting in the jungles of the southern Philippines, the military and police said Friday.

The men died during a firefight between a unit of the Army Scout Rangers and members of Daulah Islamiyah in the village of Piangologan, Lanao del Sur province, late Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza of the regional police said.

Three other soldiers were maimed in the clash and three young men recently recruited to the Moslem holy warrior group were also "rescued," he said.

"Daulah Islamiyah" means "Islamic State" in the local language. Its membership comprises fighters from several Filipino bad boy factions, including the Maute Group, which provided men and logistics during a five-month siege of Marawi by pro-IS fighters in 2017.
“Downsizing”.
The Marawi crisis was the biggest outbreak of violence attributed to IS in Southeast Asia, killing more than 1,200 bad boys, soldiers and civilians and leaving the city in ruins.

The turbans killed Wednesday belonged to a group that threatened to launch attacks last week in the area, security officials said.

Soldiers from the 7th and 9th Scout Ranger Company caught up with the Daulah Islamiyah fighters on May 31 after tracking them through jungle territory, Army front man Maj. Jairus Mark Mira said.
Sounds like a good time was had by all — except the dead guys, of course.
In the heavy fighting that followed, Private First Class Jemric Pol Contingo was killed and three soldiers maimed.
All honour to them — they fought the good fight.
An assortment of weapons were recovered from the dead bad boys, Mira said, though several men from the group escaped.

Maj. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, commander of the 1st Infantry Division that oversees the area, sought on Friday to assure the public that troops were scouring the territory and the group would be unable to carry out further attacks.

"Government troops will not stop pursuing the local terrorist group until they are all neutralized," Nafarrete said in a statement.

The fighting happened days after military intelligence officials told BenarNews they had received reports that local DI leader Abu Zacharia — the IS emir for Southeast Asia — was preparing attacks in the region to avenge the capture of four of his comrades.
He succeeded Owaida Marohombsar (also known as Abu Dar), the leader of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group who was killed in neighbouring Lanao del Norte province in March, 2019.
Abu Zacharia, who is also known as Jer Mimbantas and Faharudin Hadji Satar, survived a number of military operations in Lanao del Sur last year. He was part of the Maute group that seized Marawi in 2017, but escaped capture by authorities.

Little is known about him, except that he is a nephew of the late Alim Abdul Aziz Mimbantas, a ex-ranking leader in Lanao of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a former rebel group based in the southern Philippines that signed a peace pact with the government and now controls an autonomous region.

murderous Moslem group for the bombing of a passenger bus that left one person dead and injured 11 others at the weekend in the volatile south.

The vehicle from the Yellow Bus Line, with 29 passengers aboard, was approaching Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat province when the home-made bomb went off at noon on Sunday, regional military commander Maj. Gen. Roy Galido said.

"This is a cowardly act of the terrorist group and peace spoilers that put the lives of innocent civilians in danger and doing so is a violation of both human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
and international humanitarian law," Galido said.

"In this regard, we are working with the police Sherlocks and ready to assist them in law enforcement operations to neutralize these terrorists."

Philippine National Police spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo said the likely motive was extortion. She noted that the same bus line was attacked in a May bombing that maimed two passengers.

"Before the bombing incident, the management of the Yellow Bus received a call. Apparently they are extorting money from the bus company," she told news hounds in Manila.

Galido identified the suspects as members of the southern-based group Daulah Islamiyah, the Filipino term for Islamic State.

It consists of fighters from several Filipino murderous Moslem factions, including the Maute Group, which had provided men for the siege of Marawi City by pro-IS snuffies in 2017 that left more than 1,200 people, mostly combatants, dead.

The military said the latest bombing could also be a diversionary tactic by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF), another pro-IS group, to ease military pressure against them. Many of BIFF’s fighters often operate with other groups, such as Daulah Islamiyah.

Suspected members of a BIFF unit have been on the run from military personnel since Saturday, when government troops killed two snuffies during an operation in Shariff Aguak, a town in Maguindanao province. The military launched the offensive in retaliation for a murderous Moslem attack that killed one soldier as soldiers manned a bridge in the area on Friday.

Rommel Banlaoi, a counter-terrorism analyst at the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research, said BIFF was gearing up for more attacks after its leader, Abu Turaife, allegedly released a new video urging his followers to press on with a jihad in the south.

Turaife is one of the hardcore leaders of BIFF, a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which signed a peace deal with Manila in 2014 and now controls a Moslem autonomous area in the south.

"The remaining followers of Turaife have acquired the skill of bomb making from their previous colleagues in the MILF," Banlaoi said.

murderous Moslems and a soldier were killed in a gunbattle when government forces stormed the holy warriors’ jungle camp in the southern Philippines, the military said Friday.

The clash that took place on Thursday outside the remote town of Butig in Lanao del Sur province was the deadliest during the holy month of Ramadan involving suspected Islamic bad boys. Ramadan in the Philippines ends on Sunday evening.

"Five members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group were killed," said Brig. Gen. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, adding that a soldier was killed and a second was injured during the intense ground and air attacks.

"Daulah Islamiyah" means "Islamic State" in the local language. The group has members from several Filipino bad boy factions including the Maute Group fighting out of Lanao.

Cuerpo said the troops launched the operation following reports from residents weeks ago about the presence of gunnies in the mountainous part of the village of Ragayan. Those complaints corroborated intelligence reports about an alleged terror group stockpiling construction materials and food supplies in the area.

"The encounter is proof that the forces of Evil are out to disrupt the peace whenever they are capable," Cuerpo told news hounds.

"It is for this reason that the Army is aggressive in its counter-terrorism operations. We will never let them succeed. Despite the unfortunate loss of one of our brothers-in-arms, we will never abandon the fight against forces of Evil wherever they may be."

FOUR-HOUR CLASH
Local battalion commander Lt. Col. Romulus Rabara, who led the assault on Thursday, said about 40 members of the Maute Group were present in the area, precipitating a four-hour gunbattle. Troops attacked with rounds of heavy artillery, Rabara said Friday, adding that Air Force attack helicopters provided air support to the ground offensive.

Rabara told news hounds he believed other murderous Moslem could have been injured, based on radio monitoring on the ground.

After the clash, troops recovered four high-powered firearms, including a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, ammunition, and improvised landmine and other materials.

holy warriors, according to military records.

BIFF is a breakaway of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a former separatist group that signed a peace deal with the government and heads a transitional government in a Moslem autonomous region in the south. Abu Sayyaf is known for kidnappings, beheadings and kabooms. One of its factions is allied with the Islamic State

In May 2017, Maute group leaders and others launched the siege of Marawi, the capital of Lanao del Sur, joined by murderous Moslems from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The attack lasted five months and as many as 1,200 bad boys, troops, and non-combatants were killed before the military, supported by foreign intelligence, regained control of the southern Philippine city.

Five years later, some areas of Marawi continue to remain inaccessible because of unwent kaboom! ordnance that has yet to be removed. Thousands of citizens remain in transitional centers..

A large Moslem minority lives in the southern part of the Philippines, Asia’s only predominantly Catholic nation.

turban group’s new emir for Southeast Asia as the leader of a local bully boy faction being targeted in an offensive underway in the southern Philippines.

Abu Zacharia (also known as Jer Mimbantas and Faharudin Hadji Satar) is believed to have survived the military operation in Lanao del Sur province that was launched on Tuesday and involved air strikes and ground troops.

"We have information that Abu Zacaria was designated as (IS) emir for Southeast Asia," Brig. Gen. Jose Maria Cuerpo II told news hounds on Wednesday. Cuerpo is the commanding officer of 103rd Infantry Brigade, which led the assault.

The offensive overran Zacharia’s base in a hinterland village in Maguing town, the military said. It announced that another suspected bully boy had died, bringing the corpse count to three Death Eaters and one soldier.

Lanao del Sur is where hundreds of pro-IS Death Eaters laid siege to Marawi, the historic provincial capital, for five months in 2017.

On Tuesday, the military launched pre-dawn Arclight airstrike

s while sending ground troops to attack positions of Zacharia and his men. The military has been pursuing Zacharia’s group since January, Cuerpo said, adding that a recent intelligence report warned that his group might be preparing for a new round of hostilities.

"We have evidence, that is why we launched the offensive," Cuerpo said.

Abu Zacharia succeeded Owaida Marohombsar (also known as Abu Dar), the leader of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group who was killed in Lanao del Norte, a neighboring province, sometime in March 2019. Daulah Islamiyah means Islamic State in the local language.

"A firefight ensued after which [the] enemy withdrew, leaving behind the dead body of one of their slain comrades," he said, adding that Alim escaped but two others were caught.

The military identified the slain fighter as Saipoden Bangka Ayok and the two captured suspects as Datu Saida Abikan and Alimusa Ayon Bagol.

Alim is believed to be a commander of the DI-Maute Group, which in 2017 made up the majority of the Filipino Lions of Islam who took over the southern city of Marawi during a five-month siege.

Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, commander of the Joint Task Force Central and 6th Division, confirmed that another DI-MG member was killed during the clash.

"The fleeing enemies brought along with them the remains of the other slain comrade," Uy said in a statement.

Four marines were maimed and brought to a hospital for treatment, he said. They are believed to be in a stable condition, he added.

Police operatives and marines who conducted a clearing operation said they recovered assorted weapons left behind by the turbans, including high-powered rifles and a grenade launcher. They also seized "war materials" from a shallow bunker where the button men were believed to have holed up, the military said.

military intelligence officials earlier told BenarNews that a few IS Lions of Islam who had beat feet from troops in Marawi in 2017 were in the process of rebuilding their ranks.

recent military victories in the field have disrupted their command structure, with the overall leader of Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan’s group under assault farther south on Jolo Island, officials added.

Sawadjaan himself may have been killed in a clash in 2020, but the military could not confirm his death because no body was found. Philippine officials accuse him of orchestrating a suicide kaboom of a Catholic church in Jolo in 2019 that left 23 dead, including an Indonesian couple who were the bombers.

The following year, his nephew, Mundi Sawadjaan, criminal masterminded another bombing on Jolo that left 14 dead.

suspects being present in Shariff Saydona Mustapha town when the suspects shot at them on Saturday morning, precipitating a gunbattle, said Lt. Col. Benjamin Cadiente, commander of the 33rd Infantry Battalion.

"While troops were approaching the reported location of the terrorists, they were fired upon by an undetermined number of Dawlah Islamiyah-Hassan Group members, which forced the soldiers to retaliate," Cadiente said in a statement, using the Philippine name for the Islamic State (IS) group led by Salahuddin Hassan.

A suspect identified only as "Tong Bomber" was killed in the shootout, according to the state-run Philippine News Agency. He was a bomb expert believed to be responsible for attacks against military convoys and installations in Maguindanao, the PNA report said.

"He was killed following the 7 a.m. encounter in Barangay Nabundas, Shariff Saydona Mustapha town," PNA quoted Cadiente as saying in his incident report to the Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander.

A soldier was maimed in Saturday’s incident, but was out of danger after receiving medical treatment, the military said.

The three suspects allegedly belonged to a faction of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters

(BIFF) led by Hassan, which has pledged allegiance to IS.

BIFF is a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which signed a peace deal with Manila in 2014 and controls a Moslem autonomous area in the south.

In January, BIFF snuffies allegedly carried out two roadside kaboomings in the south that killed three and injured scores of people.

In May, BIFF briefly took over a southern town, but bloodshed was averted when they left after a tense standoff.

During a trip to the south soon after, President Rodrigo Duterte warned Moslem leaders he would have to wage an all-out war similar, if local authorities did not rein in the bully boys.

Since January 2021, government forces have captured or slain some 150 bully boy suspects, of whom 19 were from DI and 131 from BIFF.
