15 militants among 25 killed in Swat
2008-09-04
Fifteen militants, including a leading commander, and 10 civilians were killed and 25 others injured in heavy bombardment carried out by jet fighters on the Taliban strongholds in Peuchar area of the troubled Swat Valley on Tuesday.

The aircraft blitzed Peuchar, where Maulana Fazlullah-led militants have established their stronghold after they were flushed out from their former headquarters Mamdheri last year, four times on Tuesday and targeted the suspected hideouts of the Taliban.

A Mingora-based ISPR spokesman told The News by phone that 15 militants, including a leading commander, were killed and scores of others injured in the air strikes. He said the target was the command and control system of the militants, which, he claimed, was also destroyed. The first attack was carried out at 9am, which was followed by more deadly attacks. Local sources said that Gat Shawar, Gat bazaar, Peuchar and other nearby towns were bombarded that resulted in the killing of 10 persons, including two children, while another 25 were injured. The injured were rushed to Saidu Sharif hospital. Some of the injured were identified as Hakim Bacha, Bashir, Noordada, Abdul Karim, Sharafat Ali and Sarfaraz.

The assault also destroyed some houses and a mosque in the area. The Taliban spokesman said the attacks killed eight civilians and some cattle and Taliban were safe. The military has stepped up operation against the militants in the valley and now using jets, besides gunship choppers to eliminate militants and their hideouts, but they have constantly been carrying out their activities in various parts of the valley.

On Tuesday, the militants killed a traffic cop, Muhammad Siraj, at Green Square of Mingora and made good their escape. After the incident, the panicked traffic cops from all squares abandoned duty, which created worst traffic jam in the city. Brother of the slain cop, Muhammad Sher, a schoolteacher, was killed a few days back. The Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack. Unknown persons also killed a schoolteacher, Bakht Jehan in Koza Bandai area of Kabal tehsil.

In Matta, the militants blew up more shops of the Awami National Party central leader and former federal minister, Afzal Khan Lala. The leader has been under attack of the militants who had attacked his home twice and destroyed his market in Matta. The Taliban have asked the tenants of shops owned by him to leave the shops or else they would not be responsible for any loss.

According to ISPR, the relaxation period in curfew has been extended in Ramazan on the orders of Major General Nasir Janjua to facilitate the people. Now it would remain in force from 11pm to 5am.

2007-12-07
Seize weapons, computers and liquor bottles from Imam Dheri madrassa complex
Security forces captured Imam Dheri, headquarters of pro-Taliban militant leader Maulana Fazlullah, and the Khwazkhela area in Swat, officials said on Thursday. The army also blew up the houses of Fazlullah and his spokesman Maulana Sirajuddin, besides seizing several weapons, computers and some bottles of liquor from the site, army officials said. The liquor was believed to be seized at militants’ checkposts from people.
Right. It wasn't in the mullah's liquor cabinet. Nope.

Troops backed by tanks and gunship helicopters advanced towards Imam Dheri and seized control of a madrassa run by Fazlullah, and an adjacent mosque without any resistance.
troops backed by tanks and gunship helicopters advanced towards Imam Dheri and seized control of a madrassa run by Fazlullah, and an adjacent mosque without any resistance. De-mining experts have started combing the area for landmines and booby traps. In Khwazkhela, the troops have taken control of a police station from the militants and handed it over to the local police. The local administration in Swat announced a four-hour relaxation in curfew from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday.

The army took local reporters to Imam Dheri in the afternoon. Major General Nasir Janjua, commander of the Swat operation, told the reporters that the troops had operated very carefully in Imam Dheri to avoid any structural damage to the mosque-madrassa complex.

An unknown number of militants fled the towns before they were overrun. About 400 troops and police moved in, and found the complex abandoned, AP reported. The troops also dismantled a prison set up by militants inside a girls’ primary school in Matta and freed dozens of people, an intelligence official told AFP. There are reports that Fazlullah’s deputy, Maulana Shah Dauran, had been killed in a gunbattle late on Wednesday, provincial government spokesman Amjad Iqbal said.

Swat relief package soon
2007-12-05
  • Army says small pockets of resistance still exist

MINGORA: The federal government will soon announce a relief package for the residents of Swat district, the Peshawar corps commander said on Tuesday. Talking to journalists after visiting forward positions of troops at Nadia Top, Peshawar Corps Commander Lt Gen Masood Aslam said there would soon be a jirga that will give good news about enforcement of Shariah.
So they're just gonna go ahead and capitulate to the TNSM demands even after they've kicked Mullah Fazlullah's behind?
It makes sense in an Islamic way ...
Meanwhile, Swat operation in-charge Major General Nasir Janjua told journalists that 230 militants had been killed since the operation began on November 24. “Five army jawans have been martyred and several injured in the operation so far,” he added. The local journalists were also taken to Saidu Sharif airport and shown seized explosive material the militants were using in terrorist attacks.

Small pockets: The army, however, said small pockets of resistance still existed, which were preventing the army from completely restoring peace in Matta and Khawazakhela. “The army has taken control of hilltops overlooking the two areas where the militants’ presence was reported,” army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told Daily Times.

Military authorities also regretted the imposition of curfew and cessation of mobile phone service but said such actions were necessary to restore law and order. Meanwhile, local residents said mobile phone service had been restored and curfew hours relaxed. “From 7am to 6pm, there was curfew relaxation in Mingora city and GT Road,” they said.
