How Russia is protected from the blow that destroyed the USSR
2023-04-05
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] In the 1980s, agreements between King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and President Ronald Reagan led to a precipitous drop in oil prices and seriously undermined the economic capabilities of the USSR. Washington would like to repeat today its success of that time. However, the coordinated decline in oil production by OPEC+ countries indicates that the United States has less and less leverage over the leadership of the oil-producing Arab states.
It’s true. The answer now is for America to increase drilling and processing domestically, going back to the situation before Joe Biden movied into the White House. But the Biden administration is adamantly opposed to actually fixing the problem. Still, all around the world nations that can find oil are working to get it out of the ground.
Gulf oil giants Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Sunday led coordinated production cuts across the Middle East. They called it a " precautionary measure " aimed at market stability. In the United States, they react violently and look for the guilty.

Cuts by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait totaling 772,000 bpd will take effect from May and last until the end of the year, according to statements released by official media. Iraq and Oman followed suit, while Algeria also announced voluntary cuts of 48,000 bpd over the same time period.

The decision to cut oil production by more than a million barrels was made in just a few days and in a very narrow circle. Specialists learned about it just a day or two before the announcement of this decision. Western officials said they were " completely stunned by this move ."

MULTIPOLAR WORLD IN ACTION
Back in February, Russia began to implement a voluntary reduction in oil production by 500,000 barrels per day until June 2023. But, as Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, the authorities decided to extend the decline in oil production in the country until the end of the year, acting within the framework of the agreed policy of OPEC + .

"As a responsible and preventive action, Russia is implementing a voluntary cut of 500,000 barrels per day until the end of 2023 from the average February production level, determined in accordance with independent sources," Novak said in a statement, which was published on the government website.

Earlier, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov called this OPEC+ agreement an example of a multipolar world in action.

"One of its most important features is the dispersal of global decision-making centers. It is not surprising that the US is struggling to establish such a world," he said.

The previous agreements of the OPEC+ countries to reduce oil production by 2 million barrels per day, which were reached at a ministerial meeting in Vienna on October 5 last year and entered into force in November, were called in the Kremlin a "victory of common sense" and a step that "at least somehow balances the lawlessness arranged by the Americans," trying to manipulate their oil reserves by throwing additional volumes of black gold into the market.

According to Western experts, Russia will certainly benefit from the current decline in oil production, especially since restrictions aimed at reducing Russian oil exports are not working the way the West hoped for.

Moscow's decision to cut production will not affect the volume of Russian oil on world markets. Its supplies, despite the restrictions of the West, are growing and, according to tanker tracking data compiled by Bloomberg , rose by 1 million barrels per day in the last seven days of March to a new high of 4.13 million.

Now, as Bloomberg highlights, "with OPEC members joining [to cut oil production], oil revenues that fuel the Kremlin’s war machine will be further boosted."

Naturally, Washington reacted extremely negatively. The Biden administration has already called OPEC's decision reckless.

The United States is interested in stabilizing markets at lower oil prices. This would allow the West as a whole to overcome the negative consequences of anti-Russian sanctions, preventing crises in the economies, and, of course, reduce Russia's income.

This can only be achieved by persuading the oil-producing countries to increase oil production instead of reducing it. But the United States has long and unsuccessfully sought to take account of its interests from OPEC+ members.

Now, the White House fears that the world economy is waiting for another outbreak of inflation, and gasoline prices will rise, including in the United States, as happened in 2022. World oil prices have already jumped by 6% and will continue to rise.

IT'S BIN SALMAN'S FAULT
In the United States, they tend to blame Saudi Arabia first and foremost.

During the Biden presidency, relations between the countries began to seriously stagnate due to the preaching rhetoric of the head of the White House against the kingdom and direct accusations of the de facto ruler of the KSA, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, of organizing the "Khashoggi affair" (an opposition journalist who was killed in the SA consulate in Istanbul. - Note ed.).

At one time, on the eve of his trip to the Middle East in the summer of 2022, President Biden counted on receiving the main prize - the return of Saudi Arabia to its role as an independent producer in the world oil markets and its refusal to participate in OPEC +, which includes Russia.

At that time, former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk said that the United States and Saudi Arabia may have reached an understanding that would allow Washington and Riyadh to pursue a coordinated policy to the detriment of Saudi cooperation within OPEC+.

Obviously, in the United States, preparing Biden's trip, they sought to persuade Saudi Arabia to some kind of separate deal and carried out appropriate work in this direction. But even before the visit of the owner of the White House to the KSA, it became clear that these hopes had collapsed and the leadership of the KSA would be true to its obligations under OPEC+.

At the same time, The Wall Street Journal reported that " Saudi officials say they are committed to making decisions on oil through [OPEC+ mechanisms] and in consultation with Russia " and will not agree to any agreements with Washington.

After another unsuccessful attempt to prevent a decline in oil production in Saudi Arabia last fall, the United States decided to toughen its line against Riyadh and switched from persuasion to threats.

In particular, then Biden said that Saudi Arabia would pay for supporting the decision of OPEC + to reduce oil production and for the fact that Riyadh "sided with Russia against the United States."

In turn, US Representative Ro Hanna and Senator Richard Blumenthal proposed to suspend the supply of weapons and the transfer of military technology to the KSA.

Several congressmen also proposed the withdrawal of all US troops from Saudi Arabia, including Patriot air defense systems and THAAD anti-missile systems. This, in fact, further convinced the Saudi leadership that it is not worth counting on the United States as its security guarantors, but that it should continue to diversify not only its ties in the field of defense and security, but also in the field of military-technical cooperation.

ATTEMPT TO DRIVE A WEDGE INTO CARTEL UNITY
When Washington's efforts to conclude separate deals with Riyadh, even under the threat of sanctions, proved futile, the United States launched an information-psychological operation to undermine the unity of OPEC.

Now the Americans have chosen the UAE as their main target. In the United States, they decided to provoke disagreements between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, backing it up with relevant information stuffing in order to prevent a new decline in oil production by the cartel countries. So, in early March, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the UAE was allegedly going to leave OPEC.

As the WSJ wrote, although the Emirates officially supported the current OPEC policy to reduce oil production, but in private, UAE officials allegedly told US officials that they would like to increase production in accordance with the wishes of Washington, and since then Abu Dhabi has tried in every possible way to defend itself in front of others cartel members their right to increase oil production.

American journalists also tried to portray the situation in such a way that Abu Dhabi is unhappy that OPEC - and especially Saudi Arabia - does not allow them to increase oil production, despite the available capacity.

The newspaper pointed out that Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman was absent from the January summit of Middle East leaders in Abu Dhabi. According to the publication, he deliberately avoids joint events with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan .

It is significant that against the backdrop of WSJ reports, the price of oil on the stock exchanges on the evening of March 3 began to decline by more than two percent. However, an hour later the quotes won back the fall.

Of course, there has long been some competition between the UAE and the KSA on a number of issues related to both the operation in Yemen and dominance in the OPEC system. Nevertheless, the differences are not so great that one can speak of a serious split. Both countries continue to coordinate their actions both in the military-political and trade-economic fields.

The fact that it was Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that led the coordinated production cuts in the Middle East on Sunday suggests that if there were any disagreements between the UAE and the KSA, then they are already in the past.

This indicates that the United States has less and less leverage in its own interests on the leadership of the oil-producing Arab states.

Gone are the days of collusion and secret deals between Washington and Riyadh, capable of bringing down oil prices on world markets in favor of American interests. As it happened in the 80s, when the agreements between King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and President Ronald Reagan led to a precipitous drop in oil prices and seriously undermined the economic opportunities of the USSR.

Front collapse in South Marib
2021-12-09
Text by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin.
[ColonelCassad] The Houthis took the eastern part of the mountainous region of Jabal al-Balak.

Having failed with frontal attacks, the Houthis changed the plate and bypassed it from the east, crushing a weak curtain of defenders and hitting the flank and rear of the defenders at heights, which led to a rapid collapse of the defenses and the rollback of demoralized forces to the northwest.

In addition to traditional drone and ballistic missile attacks, the Houthis presented the enemy with a surprise by using a Mi-24 helicopter in battle, which, frankly, no one expected. As they write, the helicopter successfully worked out several times on concentrations of infantry and strong points in the conditions of virtually no air defense, since the enemy was completely unprepared to meet the attack helicopter.

Thus, the Houthis took part of the last natural obstacle on the way to Marib. From the occupied heights, a view of the suburbs of the provincial capital is already opening up.

The Houthi command states that "The decisive hours are near for Marib" and notes the heavy losses of the invaders in the intense fighting. It also claims that some tribal leaders and mercenary leaders are already looking for ways to negotiate with the government in Sana'a.

Houthi propaganda encourages hesitants to rush to decide their fate, as the forces of occupation and collaborationists in Marib "are approaching their collapse."

The Hadi command, despite yet another failure to maintain a static front, declares that this is a temporary military failure and the Hadis will fight for Marib. Now there is a hasty transfer of two more brigades from the east to strengthen the southern bypass of the city's defense and prevent the Houthis from reaching the main supply route of the entire Marib group.

It is also worth noting that the Houthi air defense shot down another Scan Eagle UAV yesterday (it was the 7th in 2021), and today it downed another Chinese CH-4 drone. The Saudis carried out more than 80 air strikes in this direction in 2 days, but they only slowed down, but did not stop the Houthis.

And further.
The Saudis just reported that they were able to shoot down 2 ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis at Riyadh. The Patriot PAC-3 air defense missile system was in operation.

At the same time, the Houthis declare successful drone attacks on targets in southwestern Saudi Arabia, where they managed to overcome the air defense umbrella. In total, 25 kamikaze drones and several ballistic missiles were launched against targets in Saudi Arabia against targets in Riyadh, Taif, Jizan, Najran and Asir.

Six Samad-3 drones and several Zulfikar missiles were launched at Riyadh. Their targets were the building of the Ministry of Defense of Saudi Arabia, the airport named after King Khalid and a number of other targets. Since the Saudis reported only about two downed missiles, one must understand that everything else somehow passed through the air defense umbrella.

Another 6 UAVs "Samad-2" and "Samad-3" were aimed at the King Fahd airbase in Taif and Saudi Aramco facilities in Jeddah.
The rest of the missiles and drones were aimed at Saudi army and industrial infrastructure facilities in Asir, Jizan and Najran.

The Houthi Command urges Saudi Arabians to stay away from military and industrial sites, which are legitimate military targets and will continue to do so until Saudi Arabia stops bombing Yemen.

[KhaamaPress] Head of Afghanistan’s second-largest political part-Jamaat Islami- Salahudin Rabbani
...highly educated (King Fahd U, Kingston U, Columbia U) son of post-Communist/pre-Taliban Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani who held a number of positions in the Afghan government over the past two decades, both abroad and at home ...
reacted to the caretaker government of the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
and said that a government which composed of a single ethnic group will not last long.

Salahuddin Rabbani has written on his Facebook post that the monopoly of power has been experienced in the past which was defeated and the Taliban with this cabinet will too bite the dust.

The former foreign minister is writing the statement from an unknown place as he had fled Afghanistan to Islamabad prior to the Taliban takeover and Pak officials say that he has left that country as well.

Rabbani said that the Taliban had pledged to be establishing an all-inclusive government which is not seen at all in their new cabinet and accused the Taliban to be tribal hard boys.

"The people of Afghanistan will never accept the regimes which have been imposed through force and will fight to change the ongoing undesirable situation." Reads the statement.

Rabbani has called on the international community and the regional countries in particular not to rush the recognition of the Taliban because the government does not represent all the classes and ethnic groups of Afghanistan.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan announced a 33-member caretaker cabinet on Tuesday, September 7 in which no woman is seen.

Houthis Target Mecca for Second Time in 3 Weeks
2016-10-29
Jeddah-The command of the coalition forces to support the legitimacy in Yemen has announced that the Saudi Air Defense was able to intercept a ballistic missile launched by Houthi militias on Thursday evening from the province of Saada towards the Mecca area.

In a statement, the coalition said the ballistic missile was destroyed about 65 km away from Mecca without causing any damage.

It added that the coalition air forces then targeted the site from where the missile was launched.

Meanwhile, a high-ranking U.S. officer said his country has intercepted weapons shipments sent by Iran to Houthis in Yemen.

U.S. Vice Admiral Kevin Donegan said the shipments included assault riffles, sniper riffles, Kalashnikovs, anti-tanks missiles and other weapons.

“Either U.S. ships or coalition ships … intercepted four weapons shipments from Iran to Yemen,” Donegan said.

The Admiral said the four military shipments were intercepted on several phases since April 2015, when the Arab Coalition began its military operation to support the legitimate government in Yemen.

AFP quoted Donegan as saying that the naval officials were able to determine the destination of the boats by analyzing GPS settings and interviewing the crew.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Prime Minister Ahmed bin Dagher asserted on Thursday that his government has not yet received a draft of U.N. envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed’s peace proposal.

Bin Dagher said that any proposal failing to respect the three references would be revised.

He said: “We are searching for a lasting peace based on the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanisms, Security Council resolution 2216 and the outputs of the national dialogue.”

Meanwhile, Houthi militias and their followers deliberately sold more than 2,000 tons of gasoline that were intended to run al-Hadidiyah Electricity station.

Also, Houthis threatened on Thursday to seize shops in the besieged city and to imprison merchants who fail to pay monthly fees to support the “Central Bank” and the “military efforts” of militias.

More from Ahram
Shiite rebels in Yemen fired a ballistic missile toward the holy Muslim city of Mecca overnight, Saudi Arabia said Friday, the insurgents' deepest strike yet into the kingdom amid the country's stalemate civil war.

Rebel media in Yemen said the missile targeted an international airport in Jiddah, though Saudi Arabia said it was "intercepted and destroyed" 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Mecca, which is home to the cube-shaped Kaaba that the world's Muslims pray toward five times a day.

The missile launch shows the capability of Yemen's Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and their allies to continue to strike Saudi Arabia. It also drew the immediate anger of Saudi citizens, as the protection of Mecca is a key pillar of the Saudi royal family's prestige and the country's national identity.

The Saudi military said the missile, fired Thursday night from Yemen's northwestern Saada province bordering the kingdom, caused no damage. The Saudi military has a supply of U.S.-made, surface-to-air Patriot missile batteries it previously has fired at Houthi-launched missiles.

The military said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency that it immediately targeted the area where the missile was launched in airstrikes.

The Houthis and their allies, including forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, have a stockpile of Soviet-era Scud missiles and locally designed variants. The Houthi-controlled satellite news channel Al-Masirah published a bulletin saying its forces had fired a Volcano-1 variant missile at Jiddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport, without mentioning Mecca. That airport is 75 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Mecca.

The Houthi-controlled SABA news agency said the missile "directly hit" the airport and caused massive destruction. There were no immediate delays or diversions affecting the airport Friday.

A Houthi ballistic missile fired earlier this month targeted Taif, home to Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Air Base, which also is near Mecca.

Yemen, on the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, has been in the midst of a civil war since September 2014 when the Iranian-backed Houthis swept into the capital of Sanaa and overthrew the country's internationally recognized government. In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries began a military campaign against the Houthi forces, saying its mission served in part as a counterbalance to Iran's influence following its nuclear deal with world powers.

The Saudi-led campaign initially had the logistical and intelligence support of the U.S., but mounting civilian casualties from its airstrikes led to America pulling back, especially after a Saudi strike earlier this month on a funeral in Sanaa killed some 140 people and wounded over 600. The U.S. also fired Tomahawk missiles at mobile Houthi radar sites after reporting its warships came under fire in the Red Sea near the crucial Bab al-Mandeb strait.

In recent days, two commercial ships reportedly have come under fire in the same area.

How the FBI is whitewashing the Saudi connection to 9/11
2015-04-15
[NYPost] Just 15 days before the 9/11 attacks, a well-connected Saudi family suddenly abandoned their luxury home in Sarasota, Fla., leaving behind jewelry, clothes, opulent furniture, a driveway full of cars -- including a brand new Chrysler PT Cruiser -- and even a refrigerator full of food.

About the only thing not left behind was a forwarding address. The occupants simply vanished without notifying their neighbors, realtor or even mail carrier.

The 3,300-square-foot home on Escondito Circle belonged to Esam Ghazzawi, a Saudi adviser to the nephew of then-King Fahd. But at the time, it was occupied by his daughter and son-in-law, who beat a hasty retreat back to Saudi Arabia just two weeks before the attacks after nearly a six-year stay here.

Neighbors took note of the troubling coincidence and called the FBI, which opened an investigation that led to the startling discovery that at least one "family member" trained at the same flight school as some of the 9/11 hijackers in nearby Venice, Fla.
We've been following this story for years. We had a nice summary article here (scroll down), for instance. Very well connected, indeed. Others have been following the story, too; a quick google yielded this, from 2011.
