Pakistani troops kill 34 militants after attack
2010-03-27
[Al Arabiya Latest] Pakistani troops killed at least 34 militants after about 150 Taliban attacked a military checkpost in the northwest on Friday, challenging government assertions crackdowns have weakened the group.
Back in my day we used to kill them in the course of the attack and then stop killing them when it was over.
The fight in Orakzai district, part of Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt shadowing the border with Afghanistan that Washington considers an al-Qaeda headquarters, was the deadliest such incident for Pakistani troops in months.
" Last night at Kalaya in Orakzai agency terrorists attacked and captured a check post. Security forces counter-attacked and recaptured that check post "
Pakistan military statement

"Last night at Kalaya in Orakzai agency terrorists attacked and captured a check post. Security forces counter-attacked and recaptured that check post," the Pakistan military said in a statement Friday.

A senior military officer and four paramilitary soldiers were also killed in the attack a day after Pakistani jets killed nearly 50 people, mostly militants, in strikes on a school and a seminary in the same region, a government official said. Fourteen soldiers were wounded in the Taliban assault.

Orakzai, one of seven Pakistani tribal regions near the Afghan border, also known as agencies, has seen a surge in military attacks in recent months, targeting militants who were driven out of their bastion of South Waziristan.

Pakistan mounted two offensives last year in the northwestern Swat Valley and in South Waziristan on the Afghan border, which it says threw al Qaeda-linked militants into disarray.

But despite losing ground, the Taliban hit back with bombings that killed hundreds, prompting troops to step up attacks in other northwestern regions where militants are believed to have taken refuge after offensives.

In the latest attack, about 150 Taliban launched a pre-dawn assault on a checkpoint in Orakzai, triggering fierce fighting. "They attacked from three sides which continued for nearly three hours in which a lieutenant colonel and four other security officials were killed," said government official Khaista Rehman.

"Security forces launched the counter-attack in which 24 militants have been killed," he said. A paramilitary official, said as many as 30 militants may have been killed.

Army jets and helicopter gunships later targeted suspected militant hideouts in various parts of Orakzai and killed another 10 militants, said government official Mohammad Asghar Khan.

Orakzai is considered a militant stronghold of Pakistan Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, who is widely believed to have been killed in a U.S. drone aircraft attack in January.

Pakistani action against militants along its Afghan border is seen as crucial to the U.S. efforts to bring stability to Afghanistan, particularly as Washington sends more troops there to fight a raging Taliban insurgency before a gradual withdrawal starts in 2011.

The two allies pledged increased cooperation in tackling militants during two days of talks in Washington that ended on Thursday, with Washington promising to speed up overdue military payments.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates praised Pakistan for increased coordination over stabilizing Afghanistan, including the recent arrest of a key Afghan Taliban commander in what has been described as a joint American-Pakistani raid in Karachi.

Baitullah loses support in Waziristan
2009-06-09
[Geo News] Pakistani tribesman avenging a mosque attack surrounded two militant strongholds and destroyed the homes of some Taliban commanders, an official said Monday as the death toll in the fighting hit 13.

As many as 1,600 tribesmen have joined a citizens' militia in Upper Dir district _ an indication of rising anti-Taliban sentiment in Pakistan as the military pursues its offensive against the militant group in the nearby Swat Valley.

The militias, known as lashkars, were focusing on two villages known as Taliban strongholds, said Khaista Rehman, a local police chief. Officials said Sunday the tribesmen had managed to clear three other villages.

``An intense fight between the lashkar and the Taliban is still going on and the lashkar has destroyed 25 homes of Taliban commanders and their fighters in various villages,'' Rehman said. ``The Taliban had set up their offices in those villages but the local residents and the lashkar have attacked them, and we hope the lashkar will succeed.''

The attack on the mosque Friday left 33 worshippers dead and wounded dozens more during prayers, angering residents of the Haya Gai area of Upper Dir district, where minor clashes with local militants have occurred for months.

Including 11 militants killed over the weekend, the insurgent death toll reached 13 Monday, senior police official Nawaz Khansaid. Two tribesmen were wounded during Monday's fighting in the two villages.

The government has encouraged citizens to set up militias to oust Taliban fighters, especially in the regions that border Afghanistan where al-Qaida and the Taliban have hide-outs. But villagers' willingness to do so has often hinged on confidence that authorities will back them up if necessary.

With the army reporting advances against the Taliban in Swat _ an operation that also reaches into Lower Dir district and has broad public support that confidence appears to be growing.

Already, military officials say that as they've proceeded with the operation in Swat, local residents who have remained in the region have grown increasingly cooperative, providing tips on militants' hide-outs and more.

Also Monday, the leader of a Taliban faction at odds with Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud denounced Mehsud for staging attacks inside the country, a sign of rivalries within the collection of groups identified as the Taliban.

In a face-to-face interview with a foreign news agency, Qari Zainuddin urged tribal leaders to resist Mehsud and said his fighters, he claimed to have 3,000, would stay neutral if the army launches an operation in South Waziristan, Mehsud's stronghold.

``Whatever Baitullah Mehsud and his associates are doing in the name of Islam is not a jihad, and in fact it is rioting and terrorism,'' Zainuddin said. ``Islam stands for peace, not for terrorism.''

He insisted he would resist any U.S. attempts to attack Pakistan.

Army takes control of Kabal in Swat
2008-11-23
Security forces have taken complete control of Swat's Kabal tehsil, a military statement said on Saturday. It said the Taliban had fled the area after heavy casualties and a team of engineers was detecting and removing landmines and remote-controlled bombs that Taliban had planted in the area.

It said the fleeing Taliban had robbed several houses and offices.

Minister's brother: An unidentified gunman shot dead NWFP Forest Minister Wajid Ali Khan's brother in Mingora on Saturday, witnesses and officials said. Farooq Khan, an NWFP Police inspector in Mingora, was heading on his motorbike for a market in Mingora city, officials told Daily Times. The gunman then escaped on foot from the scene on the outskirts of Mingora, local police official Khaista Rehman told AFP.

"It was a targeted killing. The militants threatened him several times," he said. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told Daily Times the inspector was not on the Taliban 'hit-list'. But he owned the attacks on Awami National Party (ANP) leaders and relatives of provincial ministers from the district in the recent past.

ANP called the killing 'terrorism' against Pashtuns. "The terrorists are out to kill Pashtuns," Asfandyar Wali Khan said. "But the ANP will not step back from its struggle for the rights of the Pashtun people." "The day has come when the (Pashtun) nation stands up to protect itself and cleanse the land from the anti-Islam enemies of peace," the ANP leader said in a press statement issued in Peshawar.

Taliban flog: Locals said Taliban punished two men with 39 whips each on charges of adultery in Kabal tehsil. In Charbagh tehsil, they also punished two alleged drug peddlers with 20 whips each. The punishments followed rulings of their own 'shariah courts'.

Video shop: In Mingora, unidentified men set fire to a CD and video film store. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far, but Taliban have owned such incidents in the past.

Seven killed in Bajaur: Four Taliban and three women were killed in bombing by fighter aircraft in Bajaur Agency on Saturday. Officials said the aircraft attacked suspected hideouts in Kas, Gatki and Kharki areas of Mamoond tehsil. Locals said one of the bombs was dropped on a stream where women had gathered to fetch water. Officials did not confirm the killing of women.

Security forces claimed to have made swift advances in Nawagai teshil and taken over several areas that were under Taliban control.

Northern Areas: Inspector General of Police for Northern Areas Khursheed Alam Khan said on Saturday that police would conduct a grand operation against criminals by the end of the current month. A statement said that around 150 commando detachments would be formed for the operation, while security arrangements on Karakurram Highway for Chinese engineers and foreign and local tourists have been completed.

He said that around 400 non-locals have been expelled from the areas, and peace committees are being formed in the villages. He said that police officials have been asked to eliminate crime by November 25 or face stern action.

'Baitullah in hot water'
2008-01-09
Simultaneous attacks on the offices of pro-government peace committees supporting commander Maulvi Nazir will lead to “serious consequences” for Baitullah Mehsud, officials and tribal elders said. Baitullah is being chased by the government for his alleged involvement in the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto.

“Anyone who is from the Mehsud tribe is leaving Wana following the late Sunday night attacks in which ten comrades of Maulvi Nazir were killed,” the officials told Daily Times. “The current situation will help the government and endanger Baitullah Mehsud’s life,” the officials said. Maulvi Nazir’s men retaliated and killed a Mehsud Talib and captured four others hours after the attacks.

A Mehsud tribesman said that there was tense situation for non-Wazir residents in Wana where announcements were being made via loudspeaker-mounted vehicles asking the Mehsuds to “leave the Wana soil. Most Ahmedzai Wazirs believe the attacks were orchestrated by Baitullah Mehsud and that Maulvi Nazir people can retaliate.”

Separately, Nazir summoned a meeting of elders of his clan on Wednesday to discuss the situation after the killings, his aides told AFP. The Mehsud tribe also held a meeting and decided to send a delegation for talks with aides of Baitullah Mehsud, local administration official Khaista Rehman said.

Militants vow 'gift of death'
2007-07-24
Pro-Taliban militants on Monday warned Pakistani soldiers to quit fighting or face more suicide attacks, as peace talks faltered in the conflict-torn area bordering Afghanistan. The militants threatened that explosives would bring soldiers the gift of death in a pamphlet entitled Till Islam Lives in Islamabad, distributed in Miranshah in the North Waziristan tribal district.

The pamphlet, issued by a group calling itself the Mujahedin-e-Islam, accused troops of doing the bidding of the United States and leading impure lives. The Governor’s FATA Secretariat on Monday set up a 48-member peace committee for Sarokai, sub-division of South Waziristan Agency, to maintain peace in the area. The committee consists of leaders from diverse tribes, religious scholars and agency councillors, according to South Waziristan Agency Political Officer Khaista Rehman.

He said the committee was first of its kind in Sarokai, adding that more committees would be established in Ladha and Wana divisions. He said these committees would help solve minor conflicts of the local tribes. The peace committee members will meet fortnightly to review its performance, Rehman said.

24 TSNM activists arrested for TV bonfire
2006-08-11
PESHAWAR: Police arrested 24 activists of a banned religious organisation, Tehrik-e-Nifaz Shariah Muhammade (TNSM), for setting TVs, CDs, and VCDs on fire during their campaign against obscenity and vulgarity in Manglawara and Charbagh. Interior Minster Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao told reporters in Islamabad that the government would take stern action against people involved in the incident. He said that nobody could stop people from watching TV.

"The activists were booked ... for terrorising people in the area," Manglawara Station House Officer Khaista Rehman told Daily Times. She said that TNSM leaders including Dost Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Anwar, Fazal and Tajud Din had been arrested. According to eyewitnesses, the activists bought VCDs, VCRs, TVs and VCDs, and set them on fire along with shops. Residents of the area also joined the campaign after clerics threatened them. Clerics used loudspeakers to tell people to join hands with them. Eyewitnesses said that the activists also launched a door-to-door campaign to 'motivate' people.
