North Carolina man gets life in prison for plotting Islamic State attack

21, of Morganton, was sentenced in federal court in Asheville on one count of attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Sullivan had pleaded guilty in November 2016, and the agreement with prosecutors called for the life sentence.

Islamic State has carried out or inspired attacks in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

Sullivan had discussed his plot online with an undercover federal agent, making plans to buy a semi-automatic rifle at a gun show and discussing potential targets.

Sullivan said he would use the rifle at a concert, bar or club in an effort to kill as many as 1,000 people, the Justice Department statement said.

At Sullivan's request, the undercover agent sent a homemade silencer to his home.

Sullivan's mother opened the package. When his parents questioned him about the silencer, Sullivan offered to pay the agent to kill them so they would not interfere with his plans, the statement said. He was jugged

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger likened Sullivan's plan to the deadly nightclub attack in Orlando in 2016. But he said his plot to use a silencer to kill as many people as possible made it even more sinister, prosecutors said in their statement.

Sullivan told the judge he was not "a cold-blooded killer," the Charlotte Observer newspaper reported.

Sullivan also faces a murder charge in state court in the 2014 death of his neighbor, John Bailey Clark. Prosecutors, who plan to seek the death penalty in that case, have said Sullivan told Sherlocks he stole his father's rifle for use in that crime.

North Carolina man pleads guilty to plotting U.S. terrorism attacks with a member of Islamic State that would have killed 1,000 people

[DailyMail] Justin Nojan Sullivan, 20, pleaded guilty in federal court in North Carolina on Tuesday after he plotted to carry out a terrorism attack at a concert or club where he believed as many as 1,000 people would die.

Justin Nojan Sullivan, 20, pleaded guilty in federal court in Asheville on Tuesday to one count of attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries.

He planned an attack at a concert, bar or club where he believed as many as 1,000 people would die, according to federal officials.

'Justin Sullivan planned to kill hundreds of innocent people,' said John A. Strong, a special agent in charge of the FBI's office in Charlotte. 'He pledged his support to ISIS and took calculated steps to commit a murderous rampage to prove his allegiance to the terrorist organization.'

Sullivan said in court that he planned shootings in North Carolina and Virginia that would cause mass casualties, according to U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose.

 member who asked him to make a video of the attack. Hussain, who was responsible for online recruitment and providing inspiration for attacks in Western countries, began conspiring with Sullivan by June 2015. Hussain was killed in a U.S. dronezap in Syria in August 2015.

But then Sullivan discussed those plans on social media with an undercover FBI employee, whom Sullivan tried to recruit to participate in the attacks, according to authorities.

He asked the undercover FBI employee to build silencers and told him that he planned to carry out his attack in the next few days.

Federal authorities have said they began investigating Sullivan after his father called 911 in April 2015 saying his son was destroying religious items in their home.

He also had offered to pay the undercover employee for killing his parents, who he believed would interfere with his terrorism plans.

A sentencing hearing hasn't been scheduled, although both sides agree a life sentence is appropriate.

Sullivan also faces state charges in the death of his neighbor, John Bailey Clark, who was killed in December 2014. At the hearing Tuesday, he didn't say he had killed Clark; however, prosecutors reserved the right to prove the charge at the sentencing hearing. Authorities have said Sullivan killed Clark and stole the man's money so he could buy an assault rifle to carry out the attacks

NC Prosecutors Want Death Penalty for Alleged Islamic State Sympathizer

North Carolina prosecutors have announced they plan to seek the death penalty for an alleged Islamic State sympathizer accused of killing his neighbor.

A court indicted Justin Sullivan, 19, in February for the death of his neighbor, 74-year-old John Bailey Clark in December 2014. Authorities arrested Sullivan in June 2015 on charges of "attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, receipt of a silencer with intent to commit a felony, and possession of an unregistered silencer."

Sullivan's father turned him in.

He reportedly also planned to kill "1,000 Americans" at clubs or concerts and allegedly spoke with an undercover FBI agent about these attacks, offering to pay the agent to kill his father.

North Carolina ISIS Suspect Now Also Accused of Murdering Neighbor

[LAWNEWZ] Justin Sullivan, who was accused of helping ISIL plan terrorist attacks, has now been indicted for the unsolved murder of his neighbor John Bailey Clark.

After Sullivan's June 19, 2015 arrest, the FBI searched for weapons at his home, tipped off by an undercover agent. Eventually, they found a crawl space with a .22 rifle, a black ski mask, a lock pick, and a silencer.

Authorities say the rifle was used to murder Clark, and a grand jury in Burke County agreed Monday. The 74-year-old man was found buried in a shallow grave December 2014.

Sullivan's father called 911 on his son last year for burning his religious belongings. They can be heard arguing throughout the call.

"You put gasoline in the house!" dad can be heard saying.

"According to allegations in the indictment, Sullivan attempted to provide material support to ISIL by acquiring weapons and planning to conduct deadly attacks on our soil," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin. The feds say Sullivan planned to commit liquidations and mass shootings for the terrorist organization.

[THEHILL] A 19-year-old North Carolina man was charged on Monday for planning a "big attack" on behalf of Islamic bully boys.

According to federal charges, Justin Sullivan claimed to be a part of the "Islamic State

Sullivan allegedly planned to obtain a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle at a gun show this weekend and use it to kill as many as 1,000 Americans on behalf of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

He planned on carrying out "minor liquidations before the big attack for training," the government alleged in its charges, and he also wanted to send a video to ISIS.

According to the government, an undercover FBI agent made contact with Sullivan earlier this month. At the time, Sullivan called himself "a mujahid" -- meaning that he was engaged in jihad -- and indicated he converted to Islam after seeing the rise of ISIS.

During the conversations, Sullivan mentioned his plan to buy an assault rifle at a gun show and discussed plans to make silencers to help carry out his attack, the government alleged.

"I'll kill people this month," he said, according to the criminal complaint. He later allegedly said he planned to attack a bar or concert and had looked through the online yellow pages for possible attack sites.

While Sullivan's ambitions appeared to be great, the federal charges make him appear unhinged. It's unclear how much he could have accomplished on his own.

In April, his father called 911 and reported Sullivan was had poured gasoline on some "religious" items in order to burn them.

In the background of that phone call, Sullivan could be heard stating "they" were going to put him "in jail my whole life," or "They are going to kill me."

During his conversations with the undercover office this month, Sullivan also allegedly speculated about robbing banks, coating bullets with cyanide and "set[ting] off a gas bomb to finish off the rest ... its [sic] easy to make."

Instead of making his own silencer, Sullivan had the uncover FBI officer mail him one. The FBI built a silencer out of a Maglite flashlight and sent it to Sullivan last week.

 on Friday. According to the Justice Department, he acknowledged to officials that he had discussed a planned massacre but "didn't mean it."

On Monday, he was charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS as well as with transporting and possessing an unregistered silencer.
