Algerian troops kill seven ‘terrorists’ in ongoing operation
2022-02-20
[AlArabiya] Algerian troops killed seven suspected snuffies Saturday in an ongoing operation in the northeastern province of Skikda, the defense ministry said.

The seven "terrorists" were rubbed out during a search operation in forest areas of Collo district, the ministry added.

The Algerian army regularly reports deadly operations targeting murderous Moslem fighters, two decades after the end of a decade-long civil war between the state and hardline groups that left 200,000 people dead.

Despite a peace and reconciliation charter signed in 2005 to end the violence, gangs still carry out sporadic operations against security forces.

On January 28, the defense ministry said that two Algerian soldiers and two fighters were killed in a firefight near the desert border with Niger.

Last year, 23 "terrorists" were "neutralized" and more than 200 captured, according to ministry figures.

  • Threatened staff outside main Police Commissariat 'in the name of the Prophet'

  • Investigating source says he 'pulled open car door and started stabbing' at 6am

  • Assailant identified as 37-year-old Algerian who 'wanted to kill a cop', police said
The attacker was from the Algerian port of Skikda, and entered France through Italy.

‘He obtained a residence permit in Italy and he came to France to commit his crime,’ said David Lisnard, the Mayor Cannes.
Update from MSN at 6:40 p.m.
French interior minister Gerald Darmanin added that the assailant is a 37-year-old Algerian passport holder who arrived in Europe around 2009-10 and has been in France since 2016, having traveled from Italy where he had a residence permit.

Darmanin said the attacker had been trying to obtain a French resident card for "several weeks" but had not been granted one.
And there we have the motive for his attack on a uniformed unbeliever.
The assailant suffered unspecified injuries and is currently "between life and death" at Cannes hospital. He had no previous criminal record in France, said Darmanin.

Algeria Seizes Nearly $100,000 Militants' Ransom Cash
2020-12-30
[AnNahar] Algeria's army has retrieved a "slice of the ransom" cash paid out to free hostages held by "terrorist groups" in the troubled Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
, the defense ministry has said.

Soldiers "recovered the sum of 80,000 euros" ($97,900) during an operation in Algeria's northeastern Jijel province, a statement issued late Monday said.

Algerian authorities use the term "terrorist" to describe armed Islamists who have been active in the country since the early 1990s, including members of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The defense ministry said the cash was an "instalment of the ransom" paid out in a controversial October agreement, where neighboring Mali released some 200 prisoners including murderous Moslem leaders to secure the release of four hostages, including French aid worker Sophie Petronin.

Algeria condemned the deal, and Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad said the payment of ransoms "undermines our counter-terrorism efforts".

Algiers said it had subsequently arrested several Death Eater fighters who had fled across the porous desert border from Mali.

Earlier this month, in the same Jijel province, three Islamists fighters and an Algerian soldier were killed in festivities, while on December 16, troops arrested a man they described as "dangerous terrorist", named Rezkane Ahcene.

One of the men later arrested in Algeria alleged that a ransom was paid totalling "millions" of euros.

Rumours of ransoms paid for the release of western hostages in the Sahel region are common but rarely confirmed, and La Belle France has denied any involvement in negotiations for the release of the hostages.

, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger as part of its Operation Barkane mission fighting jihadist groups.

Three French soldiers were killed on Monday in Mali when their armoured vehicle struck an bomb, taking the total deaths to 47 since Gay Paree first intervened militarily in 2013.

Algeria Says Arrested Four Islamists, One Surrenders
2020-12-17
[AnNahar] Algerian security forces have arrested four Islamists, while another heavily armed krazed killer handed himself in, the defense ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The Islamist who surrendered was in possession of a machine gun, two rocket-propelled grenade launchers and ammunition, in Tamanrasset, in the extreme south of the country near the border with Mali, the statement said.

The arrests take the number of people detained on suspicion of supporting "terrorist groups" to 17 across the country since the start of December, according to the ministry.

Algerian authorities use the term "terrorist" to describe armed Islamists who have been active in the country since the early 1990s.

On December 1, the ministry reported that three Islamists had been killed in festivities with the army in the northeastern province of Jijel, and said the following day that an Algerian soldier had been killed in festivities in the same area.

State media has reported that the army recently thwarted a plan by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) to redeploy.

AQIM's leader Abdelmalik Droukdel
... aka Abdel Wadoud, was a regional leader of the GSPC for several years before becoming the group's supremo in 2004 following the death of then-leader Nabil Sahraoui. Under Abdel Wadoud's leadership the GSPC has sought to develop itself from a largely domestic entity into a larger player on the international terror stage. In September 2006 it was announced that the GSPC had joined forces with al-Qaeda and in January 2007 the group officially changed its name to the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb....
was killed in June by French forces in northern Mali, but was replaced in November by Abu Obaida Yusuf al-Annabi, a well-known AQIM veteran and Algerian national.

Algerian Terrorist Renounces Extremism in Response to His Family’s Appeal
2018-05-19
[AAWSAT] Terrorist F. Salah, whose family surrendered on 26 April, has in his turn surrendered on Wednesday, following the appeal by his family, said the Algerian Ministry of National Defence in a communiqué.

In line with the continuous efforts of the different units of our Armed Forces and following the appeal by his family, made up of ten members, who surrendered on 26 April 2018 in Jijel, terrorist F. Salah has surrendered today 16 May 2018 to the military authorities in Jijel (5th Military Region)," said the communiqué.

Salah, alias Abu Oussama, who joined terrorist groups in 1998, was in possession of a Kalashnikov submachine gun, three stores loaded with ammunition," added the Ministry's communiqué

What happened "reaffirms the determination of the National People's Army units to cleanse our country from the remnants of terrorist groups as well as the effectiveness of the approach adopted by the high command of the army to eradicate this phenomenon from our country," the ministry added.

This policy, according to observers, is considered one aspect of the "reconciliation" that Algerians supported in a 2005 referendum, represented in revoking prison sentences issued against hundreds of murderous Moslems in return for surrendering themselves and their weapons.

Saleh’s family, which has renounced terror strongholds less than a month ago, consists of his wife, son, five women, two children and two infants.

The army then published three pictures, taken at a military site, showing the women and kiddies with their faces covered.

Algeria Says al-Qaida Propagandist Killed by Army
2018-02-01
[AnNahar] The Algerian army has killed a bigwig of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in an operation in the northeast of the country, officials said Wednesday.

Adel Seghiri -- also known as Abu Ruwaha al-Qasantini -- was among those running the group's al-Andalus media wing responsible for putting out videos and statements.

The army said it killed "two dangerous terrorists" in the Jijel region, 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

The defense ministry and security sources said the propaganda boss -- reportedly among the 40 most wanted "terrorists" in Algeria -- was one of those killed.

On Tuesday, death announcements for the "martyr Abu Ruwaha al-Qasantini" were posted on jihadist websites, U.S. monitor SITE Intelligence Group said.

The propagandist was an active member of jihadist groups since Algeria's "black decade" of conflict between the government and Islamists in the 1990s.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has staged kidnappings and attacks across Africa's Sahel and Maghreb regions.

Algerian Troops Kill Two Islamist Militants
2016-06-15
[An Nahar] Algerian soldiers have killed two armed Islamists in an operation east of the capital, the defense ministry said on Tuesday.

It said the two "terrorists" were killed on Monday in the Jijel area more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) from Algiers, and added that guns, ammunition and improvised bombs were also found.

The authorities in the North African country use the term "terrorists" to refer to Islamist holy warriors.

A brutal civil war in the 1990s between the government and Islamists claimed about 200,000 lives.

Despite adopting a peace and reconciliation charter in 2005 aimed at turning the page on the conflict, gangs remain active in central and eastern Algeria.

According to an AFP count compiled from official bulletins, security forces have killed at least 75 armed Islamists this year.

Algerian Army Kills 2 Armed Islamists
2015-08-28
[AnNahar] The Algerian military has killed two armed Islamists who had been active for more than 20 years, the defense ministry announced Thursday.

The two "dangerous terrorists" were killed in an ambush late Tuesday in the Jijel region, around 300 kilometers (180 miles) east of Algiers, it said on its website.

In the 1990s when Islamist violence rocked the country, Jijel was a stronghold of gangs locked in a battle with authorities that cost a total of 200,000 lives.

The two men killed in the ambush were named as Nefla Nouredine, an emir, or commander, and his deputy Bouhnika Abdelouahab who had joined the insurgency in 1994, according to the ministry.

It says more than 60 Islamists have been killed in festivities so far this year, and around 100 in 2014.

Bouteflika Rally Marred by Arrests as Army Kills Armed Islamist
2014-04-07
[AnNahar] Algerian police beefed up security and arrested about 20 people on Sunday at a campaign rally for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's re-election, a day after violence ended a similar gathering.

Dozens of students hostile to the ailing 77-year-old's bid for a fourth term tried to demonstrate ahead of the rally in Tizi-Ouzou, in the mainly Berber region of Kabylie east of the capital.

"Free and democratic Algeria!" and "Boutef, pull out!" they chanted of the veteran leader, before police arrested about 20 people, journalists said.

Abdelmalek Sellal, the former prime minister who is Bouteflika's election campaign manager, then arrived to address the gathering of hundreds of supporters.

Bouteflika is widely expected to clinch another term in the April 17 election, but without taking to the campaign trail because of concerns about his health.

Tensions over his re-election bid turned violent on Saturday when protesters stormed a campaign rally in Bejaia, also in the Kabylie region, and torched portraits of him before attacking a television crew covering the event.

In 2001, 126 people died in Kabylie during violent clashes between the security forces and Berbers protesting about discrimination, poor living and working conditions and alleged government corruption.

Bouteflika's main challenger, Ali Benflis, condemned the violence which prompted Sellal to call off Saturday's rally.

"I regret that this campaign is taking place in a climate of tensions," Benflis said in a statement issued Sunday at a rally in his hometown of Batna, in another mainly Berber region, the Aures.

"I have to be honest and say nothing has been done to ensure it is taking place in a calm and serene" atmosphere, he was quoted as saying.

"I call for the respect of freedom of expression in all circumstances, a value which is the cornerstone of my policy of national renewal."

Bouteflika's campaign headquarters blamed the violence on the Barakat movement (Arabic for 'That's Enough') formed to oppose his candidacy.

Sellal and other Bouteflika aides have been doing the leg work for the president, who is too frail to campaign after a mini stroke last year confined him to hospital in Gay Paree for three months.

The defense ministry, meanwhile, said the army killed an armed Islamist and seized weapons and equipment in a raid Saturday on hideouts in Jijel area of Kabylie.
