Six killed as gunmen spray car with bullets in Punjab's Gujrat: police |
2025-03-03 |
[GEO.TV] In a tragic incident, at least six people were killed after unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at a vehicle in Punjab's Gujrat city on Sunday. Police said that the incident took place in Miana Chak Dinga — a town in the city — where attackers fled after killing six people travelling on the vehicle. They added that the incident was the result of personal enmity. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and shifted bodies to the hospital. The slain persons were aged between 26 to 35 years. The deceased were identified as Zahid Nazim, 30, Mubashir, 26, Zunair, 30, Javed Iqbal, 33, Rukhsar, 35, and a 26-year-old unidentified man. Contingents of the police force cordoned off the whole area and commenced a search operation to arrest the culprits. A Punjab Police spokesperson said that the inspector general took notice of the firing incident and sought a report from the regional police officer (RPO). The Punjab IG ordered the immediate arrest of the responsible. Casualties in firing incidents due to personal enmity and tribal violence are not uncommon in Pakistan, given the authorities' failure to maintain law and order, as well as flawed prosecution resulting in the release of culprits in such cases. In January, a municipal department employee was shot dead at the Kahkashan Building on one of the busiest streets in Karachi, Tariq Road. |

Explosions, gunfire rock Lakki amid reports of more attacks |
2023-04-28 |
[Dawn] Multiple attacks, suspected to be terror incidents, were reported from across different parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday night, but there was no official word from military or security agencies regarding the incidents, or the number of casualties. A powerful explosion, followed by several blasts and heavy gunfire, rocked Lakki Marwat city on Thursday night, official sources said. Sources said the blast took place near the Government Postgraduate College, which houses security forces and a military camp. Residents said that after the first explosion, several other blasts were also heard, followed by heavy gunfire, which partially damaged houses in the settled area. People came out of their homes after the first blast shook the area, but subsequent explosions and gunfire drove them indoors. Citing preliminary reports, sources said bully boyz had attacked a military compound late in the night. "It was a bomb and gun attack," they said, adding that troops retaliated and a fierce gunbattle continued for about an hour. The management of the district headquarters hospital called doctors and paramedics to duty to cope with any possible emergency. A hospital staffer said that doctors and paramedics were put on alert, but no victim had been brought to the facility thus far. Muhammad Ashfaq Khan, Lakki Marwat’s district police officer, told Dawn that the exchange of fire stopped and no casualty had been reported until going to print. "All installations of the army and police are safe," he said, adding that security had been beefed up across the district after the attack. The attack came after three murderous Moslems, who had targeted a retired colonel in his guestroom, were killed on April 24 in a shootout with counterterrorism and coppers in the Paharakhel Thall village of Lakki Marwat. A CTD inspector, Javed Iqbal, who was maimed in the exchange of fire later succumbed to wounds at a hospital in Bannu. Meanwhile, ...back at the precinct house, Don Calamari's lawyer was getting even redder in the face... a number of other incidents were also reported in the early hours of Friday; two in the Janikhel area of Bannu district and one in the Mir Kalam area of Tank district. However, the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything... neither police nor Inter-Services Public Relations offered any information until the time of going to print. |

2023-04-25 |
[Dawn] At least a dozen people, including police officials, bit the dust in a powerful explosion inside the Kabal cop shoppe late on Monday evening. According to hospital sources, at least 57 people — including three civilians — sustained injuries in the blast. The explosion that rocked the cop shoppe, which reportedly occurred on the premises of the Counter Terrorism Department office, came hours after a raid by the CTD in Lakki Marwat resulted in the killing of three suspected turbans. However, you can observe a lot just by watching... speaking to media persons later at night, DIG Malakand Nasir Mehmood Satti said the incident was not a result of any terrorist activity or suicide kaboom ![]() The police officer, however, said a probe was still underway in light of emerging evidence. 20 TRAPPED UNDER RUBBLE The blast, which shattered the roof of the cop shoppe, the CTD office, and a mosque located inside the station, was also followed by a fire. According to senior police officials, at least 20 coppers were trapped under the roof, which collapsed due to the intensity of the earth-shattering kaboom. Imdad Khan, an injured policeman at Saidu Teaching Hospital (STH) said that he was inside the kitchen with other coppers when the powerful blast destroyed the building. "Portion of the kitchen building collapsed. A huge fire also erupted after the blast," he told Dawn, adding that he heard multiple blasts. In a comment on the number of blasts, the DIG said since the earth-shattering kaboom occurred at the depot due to ammunition stored there, minor blasts also followed. Emergency was declared in health facilities soon after the earth-shattering kaboom and Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the spot. Security was put on high alert following the earth-shattering kaboom and the area was cordoned off by law enforcement agencies. Meanwhile, ...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout Montefiore's foot was still stuck and the hound had completely soaked his uniform with slobber... the Swat Olasi Pasoon announced a protest against the blast in Mingora today. THREE KILLED IN LAKKI Among the three slain faceless myrmidons was the alleged killer of a retired military officer who was rubbed out at his residence by gunnies on Sunday. The police said the ex-army officer, who had served in an intelligence agency, was receiving guests at his Hujra on the second day of Eidul Fitr when two unidentified gunnies entered the Hujra and fired at him. Col Khan was killed while the gunnies who had held others in the Hujra hostage at gunpoint managed to escape from the scene, the officials said. "Three turbans, including Nouman, were killed and another turban, Tehseenullah, sustained injuries," a senior CTD official said. However, you can observe a lot just by watching... he said, the CTD believed other faceless myrmidons had sustained injuries and could be present in the area terming it the reason why a search operation was launched in the area by police and the security forces. The officials said Inspector Javed Iqbal and Constable Irfan of the CTD were seriously maimed and shifted to the Combined Military Hospital, Bannu, and Khalif Gulnawaz Hospital. Pakistan hangs brigadier for spying |
2019-11-26 |
[Rediff] Social media posts in Pakistan indicate Brigadier Raja Rizwan was hanged on Sunday, November 24, 2019 after his mercy plea was rejected for spying against the country. He had been charged for espionage and leakage of sensitive information to foreign agencies prejudicial to the national security. Cases involving two senior Pakistan army officers, Lieutenant General Javed Iqbal and Brigadier Raja came to light in October 2018 after Ali Rizwan, Brigadier Raja's son, filed a habeas corpus petition in the Islamabad high court reporting that his father had gone missing on October 10, 2018 evening, near a busy shopping centre in the city. Justice Aamer Farooq heard the petition and sought a report from the authorities. In the last week of February 2019, Major General Asif Ghafoor, director general Inter-Services Public Relations, admitted while addressing a news conference that two senior officers were in military custody on charges of espionage. Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had ordered their field general court martial. General Ghafoor also disclosed that the retired army officers were arrested in individual cases and there was no link between them. There were three separate cases. One other, involved a civilian working in a sensitive nuclear installation, Dr Wasim Akram. Brigadier Rizwan hailed from Khanpur, Rahimyar Khan district, Punjab. His father was a junior commissioned officer (JCO, Engineers). He had his early education at the Hassan Abdal cadet college, a popular nursery for army recruits. He joined the 68th PMA course at Kakul and was commissioned in the 10th Frontier Force Regiment. While in the army, he commanded a brigade in the tribal areas and thereafter, held a prestigious appointment as Pakistan's military attaché In Germany for three years, from 2009 to 2012. He retired from service in 2014. Peers within the Pakistan military speculate he may have been honey-trapped as he had the reputation of having a glad eye. A video created by a Pakistani Pashtun Web site circulated on YouTube some time ago alleged India's Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW) may have initiated the honey-trap. This seems unlikely. It is more probable he may have been snared and recruited by the Americans during his tenure in Germany. There was a sideshow involved, apparently relating to alleged army assistance to selected sectarian groups, which was being fed to the CIA possibly through US Defence Intelligence Agency officials in their embassies in Berlin and Islamabad. Investigation by the ISI's counter-intelligence wing found traces to foreign bank accounts and vast properties disproportionate to known sources of income of the arrested brigadier. Some social media tweets in Pakistan today alleged that Brigadier Raja's death sentence was expedited only because he was a Shia, while the other officer convicted of spying, General Javed Iqbal is still languishing in jail on a 14-year conviction. He was not hanged only because he is a Sunni. Questions have also been asked why the nature of punishment meted out is different for sons of JCOs and civilians while generals were given more lenient punishment, though crimes damaging national security may be similar. Brigadier Raja's fast-track hanging at this juncture seeks to wrest mileage by stressing across-the-board accountability in the armed forces in Pakistan, which has been an exception rather than the norm. The army's sanctimonious stance is unlikely to convince cynics in civil society there. 'Bigger crime than murder': SC throws out acquittal plea of acid attacker despite victim's forgiveness |
2019-07-12 |
[DAWN] In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the plea for acquittal filed by an acid attack convict, saying he deserved no mercy despite the claim that his victim had forgiven him for the crime. "Acid attack offenders do not deserve any clemency," Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa declared while hearing an application filed by convict Javed Iqbal, who approached the apex court with an appeal against the sentence he was awarded for throwing acid on a woman. The lawyer for the petitioner informed the SC bench that the female victim of the acid attack had "forgiven" his client. But Justice Khosa said that there could be no compromise in a case concerning an acid attack. "The affected woman may well forgive [the convict], but the law cannot forgive an acid attack suspect," the top judge added. He clarified that the law regarding acid attacks was "extremely strict", saying: "Burning someone with acid is a bigger crime than murder." Justice Khosa said the petitioner had committed "extreme cruelty" by attacking the woman with acid. He said the punishment for throwing acid was life imprisonment and that it was a "crime against the state". "It is possible that the affected woman was threatened into going to the Supreme Court to give a statement [of forgiving the convict]," the chief justice observed. "The law cannot forgive anyone who burns someone's face with acid," he concluded, rejecting the convict's plea for acquittal. |

NAB arrests Zardari in Park Lane case as well |
2019-07-02 |
[DAILYTIMES.PK] Former President and Pakistain People’s Party (PPP) supremo ![]() Ten PercentZardari ... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ... was arrested in the Park Lane case as well on Monday after National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal approved his warrants in the case. The former president is already in the NAB detention in the fake bank accounts case after his bail was rejected by the Islamabad High Court last month. NAB has accused the former president of purchasing 2,460 kanal land in a posh locality in Islamabad through Park Lane Estate (Pvt) Ltd in March 2009. In 1997, the NAB had dropped a case against Zardari pertaining to the same property over lack of evidence. The property worth Rs 2 billion was acquired in Rs 620 million, NAB sources said. The former president is likely to be presented before an accountability court on Tuesday. In June, the NAB had arrested Zardari from the federal capital in the fake bank accounts case which pertains to transactions worth over Rs 35 billion to the private companies allegedly through fake bank accounts. NAB Sherlocks are of the view that if Zardari’s physical remand, which ends today, is not extended by the court, they will require another option and can use the arrest warrants in the Park Lane case to keep him in NAB custody for longer. On June 26, Zardari had withdrawn his bail applications in three cases saying he knew why he was suffering and ’does not want to embarrass anyone’. |
