'We aim to form a government through free and fair elections'
2024-09-02
[DHAKATRIBUNE] Ruhul Kabir Rizvi continues to be a prominent leader within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), serving as the Senior Joint Secretary General since his election at the party's sixth conference on March 19, 2016.

Rizvi, originally from Kurigram district, is recognized for his academic accomplishments, holding a Master's degree in both Geography and History, as well as a Bachelor's degree in Law from Rajshahi University.

Rizvi's entry into politics began in student activism with the Left-wing Revolutionary Students' Union.

Following the formation of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
(JCD), the student wing of BNP, he became actively involved, initially serving as the publicity secretary for the Rajshahi University unit.

His leadership capabilities were soon recognized, and he rose to become the president of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Additionally, Rizvi was elected Vice-President (VP) of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (Rucsu) in the 1989 elections.

His extensive experience in both student politics and the broader national political arena has provided him with a nuanced understanding of Bangladesh's political dynamics.

As a seasoned spokesperson, Rizvi plays a crucial role in articulating BNP's positions on various issues, particularly emphasizing the party's commitment to democratic governance and national development.

Rizvi recently spoke with Dhaka Tribune's Siam Sarower Jamil to discuss the current political situation in Bangladesh, the legitimacy of the interim government, and the BNP's stance on various national issues.

LEGITIMACY OF THE GOVERNMENT
When questioned about the legitimacy of the interim government, Rizvi acknowledged that while some view the government's rise to power as unconventional, it is essential to understand that the government operates with the people's support.

He said: ''The constitution exists for the people, and what matters is that the government has the people's support. This government took power in a unique situation, backed by the people's mandate.''

Rizvi also accused deposed prime minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and now exiled former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She was President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia showed such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums. That is probably because Khaleda's late husband was the Pak tool who had Mujib assassinated...
of manipulating the constitution to establish an authoritarian regime, which he believes has been overcome.

DURATION OF THE GOVERNMENT
Regarding the duration of the interim government's tenure, Rizvi emphasized that it should remain in power only as long as necessary to ensure a stable transition.

He said: ''They will remain in power as long as necessary. The government should initiate reforms as soon as possible, focusing on laying the groundwork for a literate and articulate state. We're willing to give them the time they need, but it shouldn't be prolonged unnecessarily.''

RELATIONS WITH JAMAAT
Despite differing views on the current interim government, Rizvi dismissed any notion of conflict between BNP and its longtime political ally, Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
''BNP has a broader role in this country's politics. We aim to form a new government through free and fair elections. There's no conflict between us,'' he said.

Regarding student movements forming a political party, Rizvi expressed support for a democratic state where all voices could be heard.

CONCERNS OVER SECURITY
When asked about the release of some murderous Moslem leaders and the potential threat to law and order, Rizvi refrained from commenting, saying that these were matters for the legal process and the courts.

He also addressed allegations of BNP leaders and activists being involved in criminal activities following Sheikh Hasina's fall, saying that the party is committed to maintaining discipline and has taken actions against any misconduct.

ANTI-INDIA SENTIMENT
Rizvi clarified BNP's stance on relations with India, denying accusations of anti-India sentiments.

''There's no such thing as being anti-India or pro-India. We protest actions that are against the state. India is our big neighbor, but people are angry for various reasons,'' he explained, pointing out issues like the release of floodwaters affecting Bangladesh.

He also said that BNP has no foreign masters, only friends, and is open to constructive relationships with any country that respects Bangladesh's illusory sovereignty.

PROTECTING MINORITY COMMUNITIES
Responding to concerns about attacks on minority communities after Sheikh Hasina's government fell, Rizvi highlighted the role BNP played in protecting minority homes and temples, asserting that the party stands with all citizens of Bangladesh.

He further reassured that BNP is focused on ensuring the continuity of a democratic government and trusts that the interim government will fulfill its responsibilities in ensuring free and fair elections.

Police: Shibir again plans mayhem in the country
2015-02-22
[Dhaka Tribune] Leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir
... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh...
have been regrouping to conduct massive destruction across the country, Chittagong police claimed yesterday following the arrest of a central leader of the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
along with two other local leaders.

To topple the government, Shibir has planned to carry out subversive activities like 2013, when Jamaat-Shibir men conducted attacks on police, pro-government activists and ordinary people killing dozens centring the delivery of war crimes case verdict against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
, police say.

The Shibir high-command has allegedly instructed its leaders to visit different district and other units with a view to bridging the gap with root-level activists and fortify the ongoing anti-government movement.

"Shibir's Central Executive Committee Member Enamul Kabir came to Chittagong on February 12 with a written message from its President Abdul Jabbar for handing it over to city (north) unit President Nurul Amin," Kotwali circle Assistant Commissioner Shah Muhammad Abdur Rouf told news hounds yesterday.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive in Bogar Beel area under Bakalia cop shoppe around 10pm on Friday and nabbed Enamul and city unit leaders Mushfique Abrar and Golam Mostafa while holding a secret meeting in the dead of night, he said.

The letter says coordination among the leaders and activists during the movement is so poor that the government cannot be removed with this strength.

Therefore, Chittagong's root-level leaders and activists have been instructed to stay united under the leadership of former Jamaat politician Shahjahan Chowdhury.

The Shibir high-command has also instructed the Chittagong unit leaders to join hands with the 20-party alliance organizations especially Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
, the BNP's student wing.

Enamul during preliminary interrogation said they planned to carry out massive sabotage acts which had been seen soon after Sayeedi's verdict.

activist, received a phone call on January 20 that instructed him to set a bus on fire in his area.

"You have to set a bus on fire," the order came from the other end of the mobile phone to Fazal Miah alias Sajal, 22, when he was working in his garage.

"A boro bhai (big brother) named Pavel rang me," he said this while he was presented before the media at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Community Center yesterday.

"He first told me that I have to do something but as I asked him about what I have to do he said I have to set alight a bus.

"I told him I only know how to fix vehicles and have never ever done such a thing but he insisted. Later I went out with him about 12am on January 20 and set a bus on fire at 2am."

Fazal along with two others ‐ Khairul Islam alias Silti Khairul, 26, and Shawkat Islam, 24, ‐ for setting fire to a passenger bus in Keraniganj area, the outskirts of the capital.

"Based on information, detectives arrested the three from Noadda village of Rajendrapur Bazar under Keraniganj cop shoppe early yesterday," says Habibur Rahman, superintendent of police of Dhaka.

SP Habib said the arrestees are actively involved in the politics of Chhatra Dal.

"On January 20, about 1:45am the arrestees set fire to the bus of Sirajdhikhan Paribahan which was parked at Rajendrapur Bus Stand of Dhaka-Mawa Highway.

The driver and his assistant were sleeping inside the bus when it was put on fire but somehow they managed to escape the fire but were burnt badly, said SP Habib while briefing at the media center of DMP.

Habib says that a case was filed with South Keraniganj cop shoppe against 30 named and 10 to 12 unnamed persons in connection with the arson attack.

Sub-inspector Sohrab Hossain of the cop shoppe filed the case.

While investigating the case, district police detectives found involvement of the three in the bus fire case and arrested them, says Habib adding that in primary interrogation the three confessed to their involvement in the bus blaze.

Another arrestee Shawkat said they first poured petrol into two soft-drink bottles. "When the opportune moment came we opened a window of the bus and poured petrol before we set it on fire."

"We have done this on the instruction of boro bhai," added Shawkat.

About Pavel, SP Habib says Pavel Mollah is the joint convener of Chhatra Dal Tegharia Union unit under Keraniganj cop shoppe.

Pavel and his younger brother Babu are involved in violence and sabotage in the area.

"We are now trying to arrest Pavel," says SP Habib.

"The three were placed before a court yesterday evening followed by their confessional statement before Senior Judicial Magistrate Afroza Shiuli.

2 'JCD men' held over Shahbagh bus torching
2013-12-08
[Bangla Daily Star] Detectives yesterday enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
two people for their alleged involvement in torching a bus in the capital's Shahbagh 10 days ago, that left three passengers dead and 16 injured.

After primary interrogation of the arrestees, police identified the two as Uzzal Hossain, 26, president of the ward-70 unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
(JCD), and its activist Sohel Chan Milon, 28, DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam told newsmen at a presser at the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Mintoo Road.

A Dhaka court placed each of the "JCD men" on a three-day remand for further quizzing, said another official of Detective Branch of police.

Uzzal was arrested in the capital's Shantinagar, while Sohel in Bangshal.

On November 28 evening, unidentified myrmidons hurled a petrol bomb on a Mirpur-bound bus of Bihanga Paribahan near the Shishu Park in Shahbagh. A 71-hour blockade of roads, rail and waterways by the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance ended at 5:00am the following day.

Caught on fire, driver Mahbub Hasan lost control of the steering and the bus, carrying about 50 passengers, hit the road divider.

Most of the passengers jumped out of the vehicle through windows.

Quoting the arrestees, DB official Monirul Islam said some seven to eight myrmidons gathered at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the afternoon on that fateful day.

After the Maghrib prayers, the group took position on the footpath and the road divider.

As the bus approached them, myrmidons tried to stop it and blasted a petrol bomb on the windowpane of the driver's side and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

Uzzal and Sohel, along with a few others of the gang, had been carrying out such acts of sabotage on instructions of their big shots, mentioned Monirul.

Led by Uzzal, a group of eight to 10 people carried out such attacks in different parts of the capital, including Bangshal, Kotwali, Sutrapur, Paltan, Motijheel, Ramna and Shahbagh, over the last few months, he added.

The Daily Star could not independently verify the accounts of the two arrestees.

Earlier, law enforcers arrested BNP Vice-president Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed for their alleged involvement in the November 28 arson.

Police on the same day had filed a case against 16 opposition leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for torching the bus.

Fakhrul, however, blamed government agencies and ruling Awami League men for the attack.
