Bahrain's Wefaq accepts Kuwait's mediation offer
2011-03-28
MANAMA -- Bahrain's opposition group Wefaq has accepted Kuwait's offer to mediate in talks with Bahrain's government to end the political crisis gripping the kingdom. Jasim Husain, a member of Wefaq, said on Sunday that His Highness Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Amir of Kuwait, has offered to mediate between Bahrain's government and opposition groups. "We welcome the idea of bringing in an outside element," Husain said.

He said that Wefaq had no conditions for entering mediation talks but the presence of foreign troops in Bahrain would be a thorny matter in the discussions. Wefaq and its six allies said last week they would not enter talks offered by Bahrain's Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa unless the government pulled troops off the streets and freed prisoners.

Husain said talks must be based on issues outlined by Shaikh Salman. These include an elected government and reform of electoral districts. Wefaq and its allies also want an elected council to redraft the constitution.

A Wefaq delegation is set to meet Kuwaiti politicians, including Parliament Speaker Jassem Al Kharafi, Kuwaiti daily Al Seyassah said.

Bahrain cut curfew times by an hour on Sunday. The curfew from Seef Mall through the financial district to the diplomatic area now runs from 11pm to 4am.

Kuwait speaker attacks US over charity freeze
2008-06-16
KUWAIT - A US decision to freeze the assets of a Kuwaiti charity could harm its relations with its key Gulf Arab ally, Kuwait's parliament speaker said on Sunday. The US Treasury Department said on Friday it has decided to freeze the assets of the Revival of Islamic Heritage Society, accusing it of financing terrorist activities.

Jassem Al Kharafi, a pro-government politician and former minister, criticised the decision and said such charities were under state scrutiny. ‘We wish that the United States respects the sovereignty of Kuwait and it should not take actions that would harm this (U.S.-Kuwaiti) relationship,’ Kharafi told reporters. ‘Who has a house of glass should not throw stones against others,’ he said, adding that the United States should first solve the problem of its prison at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.
My friend, please don't push us right now, we might hand you to the Iranians and walk away ...
‘If this is the way the United States deals with a sovereign state then what is the meaning of the excellent relationship we have with the United States,’ Kharafi said.

Kuwaiti officials rarely criticise the United States in public.
There's a reason for that ...

No party politics yet in Kuwait
2005-11-28
KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait’s parliament speaker said in remarks published yesterday the state needed to legalise political parties in the future but the time was not yet right. “The time is not suitable now for forming parties,” said House Speaker Jassem Al Kharafi during a visit to Qatar on Saturday in remarks carried by Kuwait newspapers yesterday.
They need to 'educate' the people first. Can't have them voting on their own. Next thing you know they might have .. democracy!
