Bombing at Shiite Mosque in Pakistan Kills at Least 56 Worshippers
2022-03-05
[NTD] Keeping the Islamic Love and Unity™
A powerful bomb was detonated inside a Shiite mosque in Pakistan during Friday prayers, killing at least 56 worshippers and wounding nearly 200 others, many of them critically, hospital officials said.

The deadly explosion, reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber, occurred as worshippers had gathered at the mosque in the country’s northwestern city of Peshawar. No terrorist group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

"First I heard five to six gunshots and then I saw the suicide bomber enter the mosque and a huge explosion occurred," a witness who identified himself as Naeem told Al Jazeera. "The doors of my house opened with a bang and I fell down on the ground. When I entered the mosque, there was smoke and dust and people were lying in blood."

Peshawar Police Chief Muhammed Ejaz Khan said the violence started when an armed attacker opened fire on police outside the mosque. One police officer was killed in the gunfight, and another officer was wounded, the chief said. Authorities said they fear the death toll may rise.
Dawn adds:
At least 57 worshippers bit the dust and 194 others were maimed when a suicide kaboomer let 'er rip inside a Shia mosque in the Koocha Risaldar area of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire...
’s old city neighbourhood on Friday, rescue and police personnel said.

The Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) confirmed the corpse count and injuries in the attack. LRH spokesperson Muhammad Asim said 10 of the injured were at death's door, while nine of the bodies were charred beyond recognition.

KP police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari said the lone attacker, who was on foot, first killed one of the police guards and then maimed the other before entering the mosque’s hall, some 25 yards away, where he detonated the explosives attached to his body in the third row of worshippers.

Police and witnesses said a man dressed in a black shalwar qameez shot the guards manning the main gate located at some distance from Jamia Masjid Koocha Risaldar, and then entered the mosque where he went kaboom! amongst nearly 150 worshippers, who had congregated for Friday prayers.

Jamil Khan, one of the coppers standing guard at the gate, was shot full of holes while his colleague was injured in the subsequent blast.

"The attack took place just when people were preparing for the main Friday congregation," Mr Jah added. He said police forensic teams recovered 150 ball bearings from the hall.

"At least six kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack," he claimed, adding there was no threat alert for February and March.
Is that big or small for a suicide vest? I can never remember such things.
The blast turned the densely packed hall of the mosque into a mess with blood and pieces of flesh strewn all over, and the ceiling fans into mangled pieces of iron. The heavy metal grill covering the windows also came off and the walls developed cracks.

Koocha Risaldar, a largely Shia neighbourhood in the old city, has witnessed many sectarian attacks in the past as well.

IS CLAIM
Late on Friday night, AFP reported that the murderous Moslem Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group had claimed the suicide kaboom in Peshawar.

"Today ... an Islamic State fighter succeeded in assaulting a Shia mosque in Peshawar," the group said on its Amaq propaganda site.

Even before the claim came to light, security officials were of the view that the attack bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group’s Khorasan chapter.

"We see the IS-K as the biggest threat, more than the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain," Mr Ansari, the Peshawar inspector general of police, said.
An interesting choice, given the history of TTP in Pakistan...
The IS-K is based in Afghanistan, but security officials say the anti-Shia terrorist group appeared to have shifted focus to Pakistain after coming under intense pressure from the Afghan Taliban.
Have they indeed? It couldn’t happen to a more deserving jihad-supporting government.

ASWJ chief allowed to contest Jhang by-election
2016-11-30
[DAWN] LAHORE: A full bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday allowed Maulana Mohammed Ahmad Ludhianvi, emir of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ), to contest by-election from PP-78 (Jhang).

The bench headed by Justice Shahid Jamil Khan issued the interim order on a petition of Mr Ludhianvi challenging a decision of a two-judge bench that had disqualified him from contesting the by-poll.

Extending the interim relief to Mr Ludhianvi on the grounds to be announced later, the bench issued notices to the respondents of the case and fixed Dec 14 for further hearing.

Assembly’s constituency had fallen vacant after the Supreme Court disqualified Rashida Yaqoob of the Pakistain Moslem League-N (PML-N) for concealing assets while upholding a decision of an election tribunal in October. She was elected to the assembly in the 2013 general elections and runner-up candidate Mr Ludhianvi had challenged her election.

Then the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) announced that it would hold by-poll in the constituency on Dec 1 for which Mr Ludhianvi as well as Ms Yaqoob also filed their nomination papers. However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
this time Ms Yaqoob was an independent candidate.

The PML-N gave its ticket to Sheikh Sheraz Akram. On a petition filed by him, the two-judge bench on Nov 11 restrained both Ms Yaqoob and Mr Ludhianvi from contesting the by-poll.

Mr Akram had argued that the name of Mr Ludhianvi was included in a list of fourth-schedule and more than a dozen criminal cases were registered against him.

He had also pointed out discrepancy in details of the assets provided by Mr Ludhianvi to the ECP in connection with the 2013 general elections and the upcoming by-poll.

At a later stage, Mr Akram withdrew his candidature and was replaced by Haji Azad Nasir Ansari as PML-N candidate.

Mr Ludhianvi had challenged the decision contending that FIRs registered against him were not in his knowledge when he filed his nomination papers. He had requested the court to allow him to contest the by-poll and set aside the two-judge bench’s decision.

[DAWN] Gunmen killed a Shia Mohammedan scholar in the restive northwestern Pak city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on Monday, police and hospital officials said.

Allama Alim Al-Musvi was shot while walking to the mosque in the historic Kissa Khwani market of Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtukhwa province that borders Afghanistan, police said.

"Two gunnies opened fire on the scholar and escaped in the narrow streets when he came out of his house and walked towards the mosque," local police official Fazal Jan told AFP.

Al-Musvi was a locally respected scholar and used to deliver sermons at special Shia gatherings, he added.

A government hospital front man, Jamil Khan, confirmed the death.

There has been a rise in sectarian violence in Pakistain after several deadly festivities between Sunni and Shia Mohammedan groups near the capital Islamabad in November.

On November 19 gunnies killed a senior Shia university director along with his driver in Lahore, while another Shia leader and his guard were killed in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
in early December.

Three days later, Shamsur Rehman Muawiya, chief of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jammat (ASWJ) for Punjab province, was killed in Lahore.

On January 3, gunnies killed two senior members of a Sunni Mohammedan group in a rare attack in the Pak capital.

Pakistain is rife with sectarian festivities, with Sunni Death Eater groups linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban often attacking gatherings by Shias, who constitute some 20 per cent of the country's predominantly Mohammedan population.

Funds embezzlement Bail denied to NGO official
2013-06-21
[Dawn] The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of the Small Scale Enterprise Promotion's project director jugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
by National Accountability Bureau for corruption.

Justice Nasirul Mulk and Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani of the Supreme Court, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. registry ruled that petitioner Fasihuz Zaman, of Swiss-funded nongovernmental organization, was not entitled to the concession of bail.

They, however, directed NAB to conclude the trial in two months, observing that if that didn't happen, the petitioner could again move the court for bail.

The petitioner is charged by NAB with embezzling around Rs27.56 million of the project.

NAB deputy prosecutor general Jamil Khan told the court that the trial of the petitioner was in progress.

He said NAB had been trying to locate some witnesses to record their evidence and conclude the trial.

Mr Jamil said NAB was not to blame for delayed trial as the petitioner's lawyer had been busy in lengthy cross-examination of prosecution witnesses, including the investigation officer, and that had been causing the delay.

He said the petitioner was also not entitled to bail on merit as he had remained absconder for almost nine years. He feared that if the petitioner was granted bail, he would again go into hiding.

The petitioner's lawyer said his client had been behind bars since Nov 23, 2011. He said the high court had twice given time to the accountability court for the conclusion of the trial but that could not be implemented.

The lawyer said the high court had ordered the completion of the trial within three months but when the order was not complied with, the court gave eight more days for the purpose.

Last month, the high court had dismissed bail plea of the petitioner.

In 2002, the accountability court had declared the accused a proclaimed offender after he had failed to turn up despite issuance of warrants for his arrest and several notices to him.

In the instant case, NAB had begun inquiry at the request of the Swiss government after the media reported the alleged corruption and sexual harassment in the NGO.

Project coordinator of NGO Abdul Manan was arrested on Nov 12, 2002 and after his application for plea bargain was accepted he was set free on payment of Rs600,000.

The said project was initiated within the framework of Agreement on Technical and Scientific Cooperation between the Swiss and Pak governments.

The development cooperation programme was formed initially for three years (1995-97). It was later extended twice to 2000 with an aim to improve technical skills of construction-related small-scale industries, silk weaving industry, cottage textile industry etc.

Taliban kill tribal elder, wife and son in Bajaur
2010-05-28
[Dawn] Taliban armed with rockets and grenades stormed the home of a pro-government Pakistani tribal elder Thursday, killing him, his wife and son before blowing up their house, officials said. The pre-dawn killings took place in Asghar village, about 40 kilometres northwest of Khar, the main town in Pakistan's lawless tribal district of Bajaur, which borders Afghanistan.

"Malik tur Mulla, his wife and a son died in the attack while one women was wounded," Irshad Khan, a local administrative official in the area, told AFP by telephone. His son was 22 years old, Khan said.

Mulla, 52, raised an anti-Taliban militia in the Chaharmang valley and returned home last year after the army claimed the area was secure following prolonged fighting designed to crush militant sanctuaries.

"Taliban militants attacked the house. First they fired rockets and hurled hand grenades. Then they entered. They killed Malik and his family with Kalashinkovs," Jamil Khan, a local government official, told AFP by telephone.

Two intelligence officials described Mulla as an active tribal elder in the area who supported military operations against the Taliban in Bajaur.

Pakistan launched operations in the district in August 2008 and has claimed several times to have eliminated the militant threat.

Bajaur is at the northern tip of the semi-autonomous tribal belt that Washington calls the most dangerous place on Earth. It has seen a spike in attacks since security forces opened new fronts against the Taliban elsewhere.

The country's northwest tribal belt has become a nest of homegrown militant groups, Afghan Taliban and other foreign extremists since the 2001 US-led invasion that brought down the hardline Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

13 die in Karachi target killings
2009-06-08
The capital of Sindh witnessed a day of bloodshed on Sunday, as 13 people, including 10 members of various political parties, were murdered in 12 separate incidents.

The number of political activists murdered in target killings during the first week of June has now reached 29. Police officials told Daily Times they believed the situation could worsen unless the Home Department intervenes and re-establishes the government's control in the city.

MQM-H targeted: Sunday's unrest started early in the morning when unidentified gunmen barged into the house of Salimuddin -- a legal adviser for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) -- within the limits of Jamshed Quarters Police Station and killed him, while injuring his wife Farida, and daughter Sehrish. His daughter has filed a first information report (FIR) against unidentified persons. Another murder believed to be a political killing was that of Nadeem Khan, whose brother, Moin, is a unit incharge of MQM-H. Khan was also shot dead by unidentified assailants. Forty-year-old Naseem Ahmed, a member of the MQM-H eldersrs' wing, was also killed at his house, while his wife, Seema, was injured in the attack.

In Malir City, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a taxi, killing 28-year-old Noman, and injuring his brother, Zeeshan, and mother, Nasima. Police said the attack might have been politically motivated, as Zeeshan was the former bodyguard of MQM-H Chairman Afaq Ahmed. The body of MQM-H activist Hassan Ali was found near Azeem Pura graveyard, while the body of a fruit vendor, Shehzad, was found in Korangi. Shehzad was also a former activist of the MQM-H.

Other parties: In Korangi Industrial Area's Mehran Town, a rift between two groups over the encroachment of government land resulted in the death of 14-year-old Hardeen Khan. His family has nominated activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Raees Mama, Naeem Gadha, Asif and Hussain, in the FIR. Local leaders of the Jeay Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party, meanwhile, have claimed the deceased was a party worker. At Eidgah, near old Haji Camp, 40-year-old Faqeer Muhammad and Razaullah alias Pappu were killed by unidentified people. Razaullah was a transporter, but police sources said Faqeer had been an MQM worker. A friend, Yaseen, was also injured in the shooting. Unidentified assailants also killed a daily wager, Jamil Khan, on Sunday. Police believe this killing to be politically motivated, as Khan was a supporter of the Awami National Party.

Also on Sunday, Shakeel Naata was killed while his associate Imran, alias Para, was injured. Police claim the two were robbers who turned their guns on each other when they started fighting over the distribution of their loot. There were also reports that the two were MQM-H workers, but party leaders have refuted the claims. Police also found the gagged bodies of two unidentified men.

Taliban kill two in Orakzai, behead three in Bajaur
2009-03-14
Two bodies were found in Sam Paga area of Upper Orakzai Agency on Friday. A note found near the bodies said the men were spying for the United States, warning that anyone found guilty of spying would meet the same fate. Separately, a body was found in Charmang valley of Bajaur Agency, identified as Abdul Ghafoor, who was abducted two days ago.
Things're gonna be much better when the Talibs are the police...
However, AFP reported that residents found three headless bodies dumped in the wilderness in Charmang tehsil of the agency. Local administration official Jamil Khan confirmed one of the bodies was Ghafoor's.

Residents said the Taliban had kidnapped Ghafoor and two other tribesmen because they were considered to be supporters of the government. Also, the political administration has started crackdown on illegal Afghan refugees in the agency's Khar tehsil.

Meanwhile in another incident, unidentified men fired at a car on the Kohat-Hangu national highway, killing two people and injuring five others.
