A gun attack on JI's Taiser Town office early on Tuesday morning had left one of its worker dead and three others injured, according to police and party sources. They said gunnies riding cycle of violences pulled up outside the party office in Sector 36-C where workers were busy arranging relief goods for distribution among the area's residents in the backdrop of the ongoing lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ![]() , and opened fire on some workers. One of the six people booked is an LEA personnel. The three named suspects have not been arrested so far. Officials said that the JI worker's killing could be the result of a clash between the two sides that took place on Monday evening. On that day, they said, JI workers and activists of another group were busy distributing ration among people separately in the same area. The activity took an ugly turn when a mob-like situation emerged and the two sides blamed each other for the mismanagement. "The argument turned into a scuffle between the workers of the two sides. They pelted stones and used sticks and bricks to attack each other. The situation turned normal after area residents intervened and police also rushed to the site and dispersed the activists," said an official of the Surjani Town cop shoppe. During the clash between the two groups, who were said to belong to the same neighbourhood, a person from the firing suspects' side was injured. Subsequently, on Tuesday morning, some gunnies riding cycle of violences pulled up outside the JI office. Two of them got off the two-wheeler and fired shots at a group of workers standing outside the office and sped away along with their aides. "As a result, 35-year-old Javed Ahmed went titzup while three others — the elder brother of the dear departed, 22-year-old Azeem and 18-year-old Adnan — sustained bullet wounds," said the official. |

Textbooks of hate |
2016-04-01 |
[DAWN] In a comprehensive and scathing survey of textbooks published by the KP Textbook Board, Tahira Abdullah sums up all that is wrong with them. In Textbooks of Hate or Peace? she says the books glorify war, ‘otherise’ non-Muslims, take a uni-dimensional view of reality, distort history and stereotype women. Textbooks of English, Urdu, Pakistan studies, social studies, Islamiat. general knowledge, geography and history published under three different governments that have ruled KP since 2002 have been analysed. What emerges clearly is that any subject can be used as an agent for pushing a narrow religious agenda. This in turn can be exploited for the attainment of nefarious political goals by those in office. The conclusion? The MMA, the ANP and now the PTI (in coalition with the Jamaat-i-Islami) have wreaked havoc on the minds of KP’s children. Tahira points out that the different ideological complexion of these three rulers has not made much of a difference. |

Opposition’s rigging allegation: Arrests as activists besiege police station |
2015-12-11 |
SAHIWAL: Nineteen losing candidates of the second phase of local elections and their 300 supporters on Wednesday dared police to arrest them after marching on the city police station to protest registration of a case. Having lost elections for the slots of chairman, vice chairman and councillor, they had arranged a gathering at Jogi Chowk on Sunday last to protest what they said rigging. Police registered a case against 22 losing candidates of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, the Jamaat-i-Islami and some independents and their supporters under 16 MPO. As the protesters besieged the police station, officials arrested the 19 candidates and detained them in lock-up. They refused to arrest 300 supporters on the plea that such an arrest could be made only after identification through videos. City police station SHO Masood Ahmed is the complainant in the FIR and interestingly he was not present at the time of arrests. These candidates blamed the PML-N district leadership, Punjab Minster for Ushr and Zakat Malik Nadeem Kamran, MPA Malik Arshad and MNA Pir Imran Shah for political victimisation through police action. Sheikh Ijaz, president of Tahaffuz-i-Sahiwal Forum, told the media that “we have been politically victimised for questioning rigging in urban union councils of Sahiwal city.” DSP Ziaul Haq, along with a heavy contingent of police and Elite Force, remained alert at the police station and had to resort to baton-charge of the crowd to disperse it. Police registered case against nine of the protesters and the DSP said more cases would be instituted if they refused to disperse. It merits mention that the returning officer of Union Council 6 has already written to the DRO that two bags of rejected votes had been misplaced at polling stations 64 and 69. Shafqat and Sheikh Ijaz contested election in the UC as independent candidates and they both challenged incomplete consolidation of final results by RO Khalid Khan on Nov 23. The Lahore High Court’s Multan Bench has already asked the Election Commission of Pakistan to stop the gazette notification of UC 6 chairman result which was won by Haji Latif of the PML-N with one vote. Sarmad Shafqat alleged that the RO consolidated results without counting 85 votes misplaced in two polling stations. Meanwhile, the opposition parties condemned police action and the Bar Council and different wings of the Anjuman-i-Tajran announced protest. Published in Dawn, December 10th, 2015 |

Army statement not a warning, says Fazl |
2015-11-13 |
![]() Talking to media personnel here before attending a tribal jirga on Thursday, he said that apex committees were the appropriate forums to discuss national issues, including implementation of NAP. “Take statement of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) positively... it should not be considered a warning,” he said when asked about the press release issued after the corps commanders’ meeting in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. “Apex committees exist and such issues can be discussed there,” he said, adding that the army chief could not issue directives to the prime minister. The apex committees, comprising civilian and military leaders, have been set up at the federal level and in the four provinces to take decisions regarding terrorism and governance. He said the government had tasked the army with restoring peace in Karachi, Balochistan and Fata and if bad governance was an issue and a hindrance to NAP’s implementation then an institution could send its proposals to the government. Addressing the grand jirga convened by JUI-F to discuss problems being faced by the people of Fata, Maulana Fazl criticised some political parties and a group of Fata lawmakers for campaigning for integration of tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that some political parties were trying to sabotage the efforts of the grand jirga which had been mandated in 2012 to work for peace in Fata. All major political parties like Awami National Party, Jamaat-i-Islami, Qaumi Watan Party, Pakistan Tehreek Insaf and other groups are in favour of merger of Fata with KP. The ANP has announced its support for a rally to be taken out on Nov 16 for Fata reforms. The JUI-F chief said that any decision relating to Fata should be taken after consultations with tribal elders. He said that tribal elders had reservations over the six-member committee set up by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to finalise recommendations about Fata reforms. Adviser to Prime Minister Sartaj Aziz is head of the committee. The jirga asked Maulana Fazl to hold talks with the prime minister and convey its reservations over Fata issues to him. |

JUI-F distances from counterterrorism legislation |
2015-01-06 |
Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Pakistan-Fazal (JUI-F) has startled its coalition partners by announcing that it will not support the amendments in the Constitution and the Army Act the PML-N-led government has tabled in the National Assembly to fight terrorism. “This is an action targeting the religious-minded of a single sect. We were neither informed about the amendments nor was our input (in drafting them) taken,” declared the party chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, at a press conference here. His statement came on the day the assembly started debating the bill amending the Army Act to allow military courts to try civilians too in terrorism cases. JUI-F chief was also critical of linking madaris (Islamic schools) and seminaries with the spread of terrorism in the country. His grievances were shared by the chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, the only other Islamic party represented in the parliament. Mr Sirajul Haq separately told a party gathering that the target of those decrying terrorism was Islam and the madaris. Both the leaders spoke of ‘consequences’ if their fears became the truth in the guise of counterterrorism under the National Action Plan (NAP) that their parties had agreed to in the aftermath of the Peshawar carnage of schoolchildren last month. However, Jamaat-i-Islami Emir sounded more specific. “If there is any large scale action against the madaris,” he said, Maulana Fazlur Rehman confined himself to saying that there is no distinction between terrorists. “A terrorist is a terrorist. How can one say this is religious terrorism? And what about killing in the name of ethnicity and tribes? Is that not terrorism?” he asked. Incidentally, neither the Maulana neither his party ever hinted at any of the known terrorist groups being behind the terror attacks the JUI-F have suffered over the years. Senior party leaders say the government’s approach to the issue is not directed to end terrorism, but to sidetrack the public sentiments from the root causes of terrorism. “This is a flawed policy,” spokesperson and former JUI-F MNA, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed told Dawn. “Who cut deals with Baitullah Mehsud?” he pointedly asked referring to the ferocious leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, killed in a US drone attack in August 2009. |

Elected dictatorship |
2015-01-06 |
FOR all practical purposes, Bangladesh is now an elected dictatorship. A year ago, Prime Minister Hasina Wajid stole the general election and then went on to consolidate her rule by crushing all dissent, wreaking vendetta on her foes and hanging opposition leaders through a judicial process condemned as flawed by world rights bodies. And if you can't believe the world's rights bodies who can you trust? On Sunday, the Bangladesh National Party’s head office was sealed and its leader, Khaleda Zia, confined to the party office for what the government called her own security. The real reason was to crush the countrywide strike called by Ms Zia to demand a fresh election, because Ms Wajid had abolished the constitutional clause providing for a caretaker, neutral government to hold the polls. This was a provocation to the opposition, because since 1991 general elections in Bangladesh had been held by caretaker governments. No wonder, the BNP and 17 other parties boycotted the polls in which Ms Wajid’s Awami League ‘won’ 153 of the National Assembly’s 300 seats because the opposition fielded no candidates. If you don't show up you don't win. The fraudulent majority in parliament has since then enabled the ruling AL to persecute the opposition. They didn't show up at the polls but they ran daily riots, with the Jamaat's cadres leading the way. The most blatant form of the government’s use of courts to destroy all dissent is to be seen in the flawed trials of many opposition leaders, especially those belonging to the Jamaat-i-Islami, which has for long been waging a campaign against the AL government. Like from before the time the country came into existence. Several JI leaders have been hanged for their alleged war crimes during the 1971 insurgency, and many more leaders, including those belonging to the BNP, are on trial. Their "alleged" war crimes were proven in court despite all the attempts at witness intimidation and in some cases murder. The BNP-led strike may not lead to a fresh election, They weren't able to derail the last one. but the violence seen on Monday could snowball and throw Bangladesh into anarchy. Kind of like a replay of the days running up to last election. Persecution of the opposition and judicial farce are not what Bangladesh needs. ... sez Pakistain... The rivalry between the two leaders and periodic strikes have done enormous harm to Bangladesh’s fledgling democracy and have hurt its economy. What the country needs is national reconciliation and peace to consolidate democracy and speed up economic development. What it needs is less hereditary political leadership and a lot less involvement of religious parties in a secular state. |
