US soldier sentenced to 25 years for allegiance to IS

[StarAdvertiser] A federal judge sentenced [US Army SFC] Ikaika Erik Kang ...the tactical combat instructor from Hawaii who for years was obnoxious about his support for ISIS, then managed to hook up with yet another FBI undercover operator. He is also in our archives as Ikaika Kang ... to 25 years in prison today for trying to help the Islamic State group, or IS. Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway also sentenced Kang, 35, to undergo 20 years of probation-like court supervision after he completes his prison term. Until he’s eighty? Goodness. Kang, a 2001 Kaiser High School graduate and a sergeant first-class air traffic controller for the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade at Wheeler Army Airfield, pleaded guilty in August to four counts of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Each charge carries a maximum 20-year prison term... The government also promised not to charge Kang with federal espionage, terrorism, firearm and other crimes.

US soldier pleads guilty to trying to help Islamic State

[Ynet] A US soldier based in Hawaii pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to help the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... group‐admitting he provided secret military information, a drone meant to track US troops and other support to undercover agents he believed were members of the terrorist organization. Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang, ...the tactical combat instructor who for years openly proclaimed his support for ISIS, then managed to hook up with yet another FBI undercover operator. He is also in our archives as Ikaika Erik Kang... handcuffed and wearing beige prison jumpsuit, spoke in a clear and confident voice when he told a US magistrate judge in Honolulu he's guilty of all four counts charged in an indictment filed last year. "Your honor I provided unclassified, classified documents to the Islamic State," Kang said, adding that he also provided the drone. He agreed when Assistant US Attorney Ken Sorenson described other support he provided to undercover agents Kang believed were part of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. Soldier stayed in Army despite support for Islamic State

In 2012, the US Army revoked the security clearance of a soldier arrested on terrorism charges over the weekend because he had shown support for the Islamic State group. But Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang was allowed to stay in the service after having his clearance reinstated in 2013. Retired Army judge and prosecutor Col. Gregory A. Gross said Tuesday he is perplexed that the Army allowed Kang to remain active even after his comments about the Islamic State. But Gross said the Army may have decided Kang was just mouthing off and was not a threat. The case highlights the challenges investigators face with protecting the public from a potentially dangerous actor on one hand and gathering sufficient evidence to enable prosecution on the other.
