hard boyz from 19 to 20 May. The assault occurred in Kerawa, a locality on the border with Nigeria, within the Kolofata sub-division of the Mayo-Sava division in the Far North region.

A member of the local vigilante committee said the assailants, who came from Nigeria, targeted a Cameroonian military post. ''After opening fire on the post, the assailants quickly fled towards the Nigeria-Cameroon border,'' he stated.

The recent attack highlights an alarming trend, as Boko Haram hard boyz have become more aggressive since March, utilising previously unseen sophisticated weaponry during their operations. Notably, one major incident occurred on the night of March 24 to 25, 2025, in Wulgo, in the Logone-et-Chari division, where 12 Cameroonian soldiers bit the dust.

This week's deadly assault serves as a reminder that, despite claims of a retreat by the terrorists, the threat they pose remains constant within the Lake Chad Basin. Even with strong responses from the Cameroonian army, Boko Haram continues to conduct violent mostly peaceful operations, instilling fear and destabilising the border areas with Nigeria. This comes despite repeated assertions from the military that they have broken the back of Boko Haram in the region.

As part of its intensified violent mostly peaceful campaign, Boko Haram/ISWAP increased the deployment of improvised bombs (IEDs) along critical highways in the Lake Chad region, especially in Nigeria. Over the past month, numerous IED detonations occurred, resulting in casualties among both civilians and security forces.

Recent developments have seen two significant bridges — one in the Gujiba local government area of Yobe State and the other in the Biu local government area of Borno State — damaged by IED blasts attributed to the terrorist group. These incidents have significantly disrupted mobility, making entire routes perilous and putting commuters at heightened risk of attacks, particularly in resettled communities that are already unstable.

The destruction of these essential infrastructures also threatens humanitarian efforts and the region's economic stability. Human rights groups, humanitarian organizations, and local media have cautioned for months that resettling populations without adequate security measures may expose them to reprisals and further displacement.

Don't allow Marte, other Borno's towns captured, Zulum begs FG - Businessday NG
2025-05-21
[BUSINESSDAY.NG] Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has appealed to the Federal Government to deploy decisive strategies that will ensure that Marte town and other Borno communities do not fall under the control of the Boko Haram

and ISWAP turbans.

Governor Zulum, who was actively involved in coordinating security logistics till late in the night at the weekend, undertook a tour to assess the challenges faced in Marte town, while also exploring sustainable solutions to foster stability.

Before Governor Zulum's arrival, Marte was completely deserted following a Boko Haram attack last Friday, with thousands taking refuge in Dikwa town.

Speaking to journalists, the governor emphasised that his visit to Marte was to foster community cooperation, resilience and continuous support to the security agencies, stating that ''Marte was resettled about four years ago, but unfortunately, over the last three days, it was ransacked and was displaced again.''

''About 20,000 people left Marte for Dikwa; this huge number is a threat, as allowing them to stay in the camp may make most of the younger ones become vulnerable to recruitment by the turbans.

''Alhamdulillah, we returned to Marte yesterday and spent the night with the support of the Nigerian Army and our volunteers. The community is now resettled for the second time. Still, my prayers to the federal government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Army are that we do everything possible to keep this town on the ground.

''Hitherto, Marte Local Government comprises over 300 towns and villages, now we have only one standing, if we cannot maintain this one, then we will lose the whole Local Government to the turbans, which will be very obnoxious, and I think we will not allow this to happen. Therefore, I am calling on the federal government and the Nigerian Army so that we can put our heads together and hold our ground for this single town in this LGA to remain.''

The governor reiterated his commitment to supporting security agencies in attaining lasting peace in Borno State, saying, ''On my part as the Governor of Borno State, I would do everything within my power to support our gallant military in their efforts towards lasting peace in our beloved State.''

West Africa Province (ISWAP) stormed the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) base housing Nigerian and Cameroonian troops in the town of Wulgo in a pre-dawn attack, engaging troops in a shootout, the two sources said.

''Four Nigerian soldiers and a Cameroonian soldier were killed in the fighting,'' a Nigerian military source said.

''Nine of the bully boyz were also killed,'' the officer said.

The forces of Evil forced the troops to abandon the base after overwhelming them, said a second officer, who gave the same toll.

The attack came two months after a similar raid on the same base killed 25 Cameroonian soldiers.

Nigeria: Insecurity - Bandits Feed Our Babies to Their Dogs - Zamfara Lawmaker
2025-05-16
[ALLAFRICA] A member of the House of Representatives from Zamfara State, Aminu Jaji, has decried the "terrifying insecurity" in his constituency, narrating how "bandidos fed newborn twins to their dogs."

He painted a harrowing picture of "how bandidos attacked, committed mass kidnapping, their crass lawlessness," which have left the communities in his constituency devastated and many residents displaced.

This came as the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, expressed concern over the current insecurity in the country, blaming the situation on the spillover effects from the Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...

the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Christopher Musa, said that the military is more determined than ever to go after all snuffies to restore peace and stability in the country.

Jaji, who previously chaired the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence, said, "Over 200 attacks have been recorded in communities across Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State alone, including Dayo, Banga, Gabaki, Korea and Madura."

The politician, who was briefing newsmen at the National Assembly, said: "Just two days ago, 60 people were kidnapped in Banga. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N30 million. Out of those kidnapped, 10 were killed, and the fate of the remaining 50 hang in the balance."

The politician lamented that while leaders often make lofty promises, little is done in practice.

"We gave assurances that if our party came to power, insecurity will become history. Unfortunately, the reality today is different," he said, adding, "Many communities have been turned into ghost towns due to persistent attacks.

bully boyz killed over 40 people in multiple attacks across Borno State, razing down houses and a church, The PUNCH reports.

The tragedy comes after Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army's commitment to enhancing the capacity of its troops to neutralise ongoing threats to national security

One of our correspondents gathered that the Borno attack occurred in different locations between Kalabalge and Damboa Local Government Areas.

The PUNCH had reported that on Monday, around 12pm, 26 travellers ran over an Improvised Explosive Device suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram bully boyz while traveling along the Kala-Balge road to Gamboru Ngala Local government Area of Borno State.

Confirming the incident to The PUNCH, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the injured victims were still in the hospital.

He said, ''Earlier today at about 12pm, an Isuzu pickup van with registration number XA265KKU drove all the way from Kalabalge area enroute Gamboru Ngala stepped on an IED around Furunduma village. The tragic incident led to the death of 26 persons, which includes 16 males and four females and six children.''

Seven hours later, around 7pm same day, the bully boyz stormed a funeral gathering, shooting sporadically, reportedly killing about 15 mourners.

, and the situation is getting worse, according to a bishop.

Bishop Bartholemy Yaouda Hourgo of the Yagoua Diocese in Cameroon's Far North region, Bartholemy Yaouda Hourgo spoke to Crux about the deteriorating security situation in the area during the 50th Ordinary Plenary Assembly of the Cameroon Bishops' Conference.

''The current situation of insecurity is worsening,'' he said. ''I say this because just recently, soldiers were killed only 5 kilometers from my village.''

On March 25, Boko Haram fighters, disguised as herdsmen, launched a deadly assault on a military base in Wulgo, near the Nigerian border. The base, operated by Cameroonian soldiers from the Multinational Joint Task Force, was overrun by the assailants, resulting in the loss of at least 20 soldiers.

According to sources cited by the French news channel Africa 24, the faceless myrmidons seized Soviet-made Shilka guns — lightly armored, radar-guided anti-aircraft weapons further escalating the threat.

Yaouda Hourgo expressed concern over the worsening security situation, emphasizing that the terrorist organization is increasingly acquiring sophisticated weaponry.

''Boko Haram now has access to drones,'' the bishop told Crux.

On Tuesday, ISWAP grabbed credit for an attack on Borno state that killed at least 26 people, the group said in a statement on Telegram.

The hard boyz have been battling security forces for over 15 years in the northeast and often use improvised bombs to attack civilians and security forces.

sect in parts of the North-East has set alarm bells ringing again. When Nigerians thought that the lawless group had been significantly degraded, it began to make a forceful comeback, in concert with ISWAP, leaving many astounded.

According to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, the renewed attacks indicate that the government is worse off.

He said, ''As I address this important gathering today, it is unfortunate that the renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities, almost daily, without confrontation, signalled that Borno State is losing ground.''

Zulum lamented that the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in some LGAs, among other related killings of innocent civilians and security agencies, called for serious concern.

The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar el-Kanemi, hailed security agencies in the fight against terrorism, but emphasised that three LGAs of Guzamala, Marte, Abbadam and some parts of Mobbar were still under the total control of Boko Haram. He said most of those communities were without civil authority.

The Nigerian military, however, denied the governor's assertions.

Bulama Bukarti, a security expert and senior fellow at the Extremism Policy Unit of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, said, ''We know that Boko Haram now operates unmanned drones. They survey military formations in the North-East with unmanned drones.''

These revelations are a sobering indicator that the deadly sect continues to expand its methods on various frontiers without being effectively challenged.

The situation is quite grim and dire for thousands of resettled persons in various Borno communities in Gwoza LGA and other places deemed to be safe.

Some of these communities are far-flung and are not regularly covered by security forces.

Lions of Islam in the Tumbus areas of Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills within the Sambisa Forest in the state.

Governor Zulum lamented what he called a setback in military operations in the state, saying Boko Haram Lions of Islam were regrouping in the Tumbus water areas on the Lake Chad without resistance by the military to dislodge them.

The governor disclosed this in Maiduguri on Friday when the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other top military commanders paid him a visit.

Zulum, who acknowledged the efforts of the military in combating the Boko Haram in Borno and the North-East, noted that there had been a resurgence of the Lions of Islam in certain areas, particularly around the Tumbus in Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills in Sambisa Forest.

He said, ''What we are facing now is, we do military exercises/operations, and after some time, we disengage. The Boko Haram and ISWAP members will again come and take over those areas that were hitherto regained.

''There was never a time since the insurgency started that operations were conducted on the shores of the Tumbus in the Lake Chad. And, it has been a breeding ground for the murderous Moslems. They can get money, livelihoods, and everything in that water.''

''So, there is a need for us to see how military operations should be conducted in the waterway because all the Lions of Islam that are operating in the Northwest, North Central, Northeast will return to the Sahel and Tumbus in the Lake Chad for their livelihoods. This is something that needs to be done.''

Zulum listed some of the challenges faced in the state as lack of military manpower covering the Timbuktu triangle, Tumbus, Mandara hills, and the porous Nigerian borders to Sahelian states.

''Manpower is very essential, while I was aware of the constraints of the Nigerian army, because right now, you are everywhere in Nigeria. The Northeast, Northwest and North Central as well as southern Nigeria. I'm aware of your limitations.

''But still considering the northeastern region, the Nigerian army should look into the possibility of sending more trained manpower. There is a difference between Boko Haram, ISWAP, and bandidos.

''ISWAP and Boko Haram are Lions of Islam getting support internationally, and looking at our mostly non-existent borders remain infiltrated through the Sahel, which is our major problem.

''If the Sahel is not secured, Nigeria will never be secured. So, there is a need for us to fortify the security situation in the Sahel with a view to ending the crisis in the entire nation.

''So, we need manpower, and in terms of military operations, the operation should be a continuous exercise,'' he said.

The governor appealed to the defence minister to deploy more track military tanks, MRAPS, and all corresponding ammunition to Borno for a successful operation.

''We need air support. I know the kind of constraints you face accessing fighter helicopters and others, but attack helicopters are very important in these areas, and drones are also very important.

''The last attack that happened in Wulgo, carried out by ISWAP and Boko Haram, a confirmed statement said it was carried out with the support of armed drones. They hit the MNJTF with drones.

''This is the time for the Nigerian military to rise again and procure sophisticated drones and anti-drone equipment so that we get rid of these problems.

''While you are working towards kinetic measures, you should consider the non-kinetic approach, which is very important. Borno State has, within the last three years, received more than 300,000 repentant Boko Haram fighters, and not all of them are fighters. Some of them are farmers,'' he said.

Zulum expressed optimism that the security situation in the state will improve very soon, while assuring every support and collaboration to the military to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

Speaking, Badaru assured that the Federal Government would provide more military support to deal with the security challenges in Borno and the North-East.

Borno State Receives Over 300,000 ''Repentant'' Boko Haram Members In Three Years
2025-04-27
[SAHARAREPORTERS] The Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has revealed that 300,000 "repentant Boko Haram members" have been received by the state within the last three years.

The governor shared the information with the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar; the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; and other top military commanders during their visit to Maiduguri.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Governor Zulum raised the alarm that Boko Haram terrorists were regrouping in the Tumbus areas of Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, both located within the dreaded Sambisa Forest.

While acknowledging the efforts of the military, he had noted that there are challenges making it difficult to effectively combat the rising threat of terrorism, and these need to be urgently addressed.

He stated that while the Nigerian Army is pursuing kinetic measures, it should also consider non-kinetic approaches, which are equally important.

"Borno State has, within the last three years, received more than 300,000 repentant Boko Haram fighters, and not all of them are fighters. Some of them are farmers,” he noted.

"Manpower is very essential. While I’m aware of the constraints of the Nigerian Army—because right now, you are everywhere in Nigeria: the Northeast, Northwest, North Central, as well as southern Nigeria—I’m aware of your limitations."

"But still, considering the northeastern region, the Nigerian Army should look into the possibility of sending more trained manpower. There is a difference between Boko Haram, ISWAP, and bandits."

He also emphasised that ISWAP and Boko Haram are receiving international support.

"ISWAP and Boko Haram are terrorists getting support internationally, and looking at our porous borders, they remain infiltrated through the Sahel, which is our major problem."

"If the Sahel is not secured, Nigeria will never be secured. So, there is a need for us to fortify the security situation in the Sahel with a view to ending the crisis in the entire nation."

"We need air support. I know the kind of constraints you face accessing fighter helicopters and others, but attack helicopters are very important in these areas, and drones are also very important."

"The last attack that happened in Wulgo, carried out by ISWAP and Boko Haram—a confirmed statement said it was carried out with the support of armed drones. They hit the MNJTF with drones."

"This is the time for the Nigerian military to rise again and procure sophisticated drones and anti-drone equipment so that we get rid of these problems."

Earlier in April, while speaking at a Special Expanded Security Meeting, Zulum condemned the continuous attacks and kidnappings, noting that these incidents occur almost daily without significant resistance from security forces, according to Channels TV.

He described the situation as a serious setback for both Borno and the wider Northeast region.

"As I address this important gathering today, it is unfortunate that the renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost on a daily basis without confrontation signal that Borno State is losing ground,” Zulum said.

The meeting was attended by Major General Abubakar Haruna, General Officer Commanding 7 Division; sector commanders; the Commissioner of Police; heads of other security agencies; and traditional rulers, including the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, and the Shehu of Bama.

Zulum pointed to the recent dislodgement of military formations in Damboa Local Government Area (Wajirko and Sabon Gari), Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area (Wulgo), and Gwoza Local Government Area (Izge) as deeply concerning.

"While my administration has been very supportive of the military and other security agencies in the fight against Boko Haram, it is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko, Sabon Gari in Damboa, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, and Izge in Gwoza, along with the killing of innocent civilians and security personnel."

"This calls for serious concern and signals a setback in the fragile state of Borno and the Northeast,” he added.
