Iran claims to bust network of Israeli spies planning ‘sabotage, terrorist ops’ |

![]() Iran ...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979... claimed Saturday to have stopped an Israeli spy network, arresting agents who had entered the Islamic republic to carry out attacks against "sensitive" sites. The Islamic Theocratic Republic’s official IRNA news agency said the agents, who were in contact with Israel’s Mossad spy agency, had entered the country from northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region for the purpose of carrying out sabotage and "terrorist operations" with the help of state-of-the-art technology. "All of them were captured," it said, "and their weapons, explosives, technical and communications equipment were entirely discovered and confiscated." The statement did not say how many suspects were arrested or give their nationalities, nor did it identify the targets of the purported plots. Iran occasionally announces the detention of people it says are spying for foreign countries, including the United States and Israel, though it does not provide evidence to back up such claims. Nasiri served as a senior commander in the IRGC Protection of Information Unit, The New York Times reported. His arrest came about two months after a few dozen security officials involved in Iran’s missile program were arrested for allegedly leaking classified information to Israel, the newspaper said. Reportedly arrested sometime in early June, Nasiri’s arrest came shortly before the replacement of the IRGC’s intelligence chief Hossein Taeb. Taeb, who held the position for more than 12 years, had been tasked with exposing Israel’s spy network in Iran, an unnamed adviser to the Iranian government and an individual affiliated with the IRGC both told the Times. Taeb’s downfall is seen by some as a prime example of the long-running campaign by Israel to expose failures by the IRGC by allegedly stepping up attacks against Iran’s nuclear facilities in recent months and targeting high-level officials inside Iranian territory — all meant to generate conflict between the political and defense establishments in Iran, Israeli officials told the newspaper. “The Guards’ chief Major General Hossein Salami appointed General Mohammad Kazemi as the new head of the IRGC Intelligence Organisation,” Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif said in the statement. Salami also appointed Taeb, who is a cleric, as his own adviser, according to the statement.
Iran and US ally Israel have been engaged in a years-long shadow war but tensions have ratcheted up following a string of high-profile incidents Tehran has blamed on the Jewish state. On June 13, Ali Kamani, a member of the Guards’ aerospace division, was killed while on a mission in Khomein in the central province of Markazi, the Guards said in a statement without elaborating. Earlier in June, Colonel Ali Esmailzadeh, a commander of the Guards’ external operations unit, the Quds Force, died “in an accident in his home”, according to state news agency IRNA. And on May 22, Guards Colonel Sayyad Khodai, 50, was killed outside his home in the east of the Iranian capital by attackers on motorbikes who shot him five times. State television in Iran said Khodai was a member of the Quds Force and that he was “known” in Syria, where Iran has acknowledged deploying “military advisers”. The Guards described Khodai as a “defender of the sanctuary”, a term used for those who work on behalf of the Islamic republic in Syria or Iraq. The Guards accused “Zionists” of being behind the assassination and vowed revenge. Israel urges its citizens to leave Turkey after arrests Israel last week urged its citizens to leave Turkey immediately because of “possible” threats from Iranian operatives. Media outlets in Turkey on Thursday reported the arrest of eight people allegedly working for an Iranian intelligence cell that planned to kill Israeli tourists in Istanbul.

According to Taeb, the holy warriors were supposed to buy a place next to a Husseiniyah (religious hall) belonging to General Soleimani’s late father, plant 350-500 kilograms of explosives beneath the place, and blow up the site during Tasu’a and Ashura mourning processions marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PTUI!), the third Shia Imam, on September 8-9. Following a “precise and smart intelligence operation,” the IRGC’s intelligence unit “succeeded in arresting the three-member team,” he said, adding that the “Hebrew-Arab services” had spent several years to draw up the plot for such crime.

Iran Denies EU Charges Linking Revolutionary Guards to Syria Crackdown |
2011-06-27 |
[An Nahar] Iran on Sunday reiterated that it does not interfere in the affairs of its regional Arab ally Syria and accused the European Union of leading a "baseless" campaign against Tehran by imposing sanctions. "No, no! Certainly not!" "The baseless EU claims in connecting events in Syria to the Revolutionary Guards reveal the bloc's efforts to create a campaign against the Islamic republic and to distort reality," foreign ministry front man Ramin Mehmanparast said in a statement. Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also told news hounds on Sunday that "Syrians are capable of resolving their issues." The EU imposed sanctions on three Revolutionary Guard commanders, including its chief Brigadier Mohammad Ali Jafari, accusing them of aiding the crackdown in Syria, the EU's Official Journal showed on Friday. Jafari was hit by an assets freeze and travel ban for "providing equipment and support to help the Syria regime suppress protests in Syria," the Journal said. The same accusations were lodged against Major General Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Guards' Qods unit, and Hossein Taeb, deputy commander for intelligence. In contrast to its vocal support for uprisings that have swept the Arab world, Iran has been cautious in its stance on the anti-regime protests in Syria. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 1,342 civilians have been killed in the government's crackdown and 342 security force personnel have also bit the dust since it erupted mid-March. US slaps sanctions on eight Iranian toadies
2010-09-30 | ||||
WASHINGTON The United States stepped up pressure against Irans government on Wednesday, slapping financial and travel sanctions on eight Iranian officials and accusing them of taking part in rampant human rights abuses. Under an executive order signed this week by President Barack Obama, the State and Treasury departments jointly announced the sanctions that target Iranians who share responsibility for the sustained and severe violation of human rights in Iran, notably after last years disputed presidential elections.
We have found that then we single out individuals and expose their conduct, banks, businesses and governments around the world respond by cutting off their economic and financial dealings with these individuals, these institutions, these businesses, Geithner said. Among the eight Iranians targeted Wednesday is Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Irans powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and one his top deputies, Hossein Taeb. Jafari is already subject to U.S. sanctions related to Irans nuclear program.
Also named were Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi, four current and former police chiefs and prosecutors, and Sadeq Mahsouli, currently Irans minister of welfare and social security. Mahsouli was minister of the interior at the time of the June 2009 election, and in that role had authority over all police forces and Interior Ministry security agents, the administrations announcement said. His forces were responsible for attacks on the dormitories of Tehran University on June 15, 2009, during which students were severely beaten and detained, the joint Treasury and State statement said.

Report: Turkey & Iran Sending "Sophisticated" Arms to Hezbollah... |
2010-08-12 |
H/T Weasel Zipper Turkey and Iran are rumored to be helping Hizbullah obtain new weapons, Italian daily Corriere Della Sera reported on Wednesday evening. Turkish intelligence chief Hakan Fidan reportedly met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Taeb to discuss relations between the two countries. Sources told Corriere Della Sera that Turkey will "send sophisticated weapons, rockets and guns to Syria, that will end up in Lebanon," where the Iranian Army will ensure the weapons are transferred to Hizbullah. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards "will facilitate the transition, ensure safety, watch loads on the routes, and provide support to the border," the report said. The Iranians reportedly want to build a weapons network similar to that in the Sudan, and hope to help Hamas, as well. The Italian newspaper reported that Western intelligence sources "view the Turkish-Iranian plot with concern, as they are obvious risks to safety." "The [intelligence] services in Ankara are among the best in the region," sources told Corriere Della Sera. "They have great knowledge of the Middle East, and know how to move on the routes of illegal trafficking." |

Police, Basij 'imposters' arrested in Iran |
2009-06-30 |
![]() Iran's Basij commander, Hossein Taeb, said Monday that the imposters had worn police and Basij uniforms to infiltrate the rallies and create havoc. Taeb added that the recent anti-government riots have killed eight members of the Basij and wounded 300 others. Iranian security officials --and in particularly the Basij volunteer forces-- have been accused of killing and injuring protestors who took to the streets to protest the outcome of the June 12 election -- which saw incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad win by a landslide. "Basij forces are not authorized to carry weapons," said Taeb, asserting that armed groups are the main culprit behind the killings. Tehran Police Chief Azizallah Rajabzadeh has also insisted that his department had no role in the shoot-out that has become the focus of most media outlets in the West. "Policemen are not authorized to use weapons against people," said Rajabzadeh. "They are trained to only use anti-riot tools to keep the people out of harms way," said Rajabzadeh. Last week saw some of the worst violence since the election after some 'terrorist elements' infiltrated the rallies on Saturday, according to Iranian officials. The insurgents set fire to a mosque, two gas stations and a military post in Western Tehran, leaving scores of people dead and wounded. Supporters of the defeated candidates have staged a torrent of rallies, which have provoked unprecedented mayhem in the country over the past nine days. Mir-Hossein Mousavi election campaign officials, however, have insisted that the defeated candidate's supporters are not within the rioters. |
