Iran-backed Palestinian terror groups said to leave Syria under pressure from Sharaa
2025-05-24
[IsraelTimes] Flight of pro-Assad factions comes amid Trump’s demand that the new regime crack down on Palestinian terrorism as a condition for sanctions relief

Leaders of Iran-backed Paleostinian terror groups in Syria close to former president Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
have left the country under pressure from the regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the ouster of the Iran-backed strongman in December, Paleostinian sources said Friday.

The armed factions’ flight comes amid a White House demand that Sharaa crack down on Paleostinian terror groups as a condition for the removal of Washington’s sanctions on Damascus. There have also been unconfirmed reports that Syria’s new regime has held indirect talks with Israel on potential normalization between the two countries, despite Israeli leaders’ deep suspicion of Sharaa due to his jihadi past.

The crackdown did not appear to affect the Syrian presence of Gazoo

, which is also backed by Iran, nor that of Fatah, the secularist faction that dominates the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority.

The leader of one Iran-backed Paleostinian group, who left Syria after Assad’s overthrow, said on condition of anonymity that "most of the Paleostinian factional leadership that received support from Tehran has left Damascus" to countries including Leb
...an Iranian satrapy until recently ruled by Hassan Nasrallah situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel...
. Another faction leader still in Damascus confirmed the development.

The first faction leader said "the factions have fully handed over weapons in their headquarters or with their cadres" to the authorities, who also received "lists of names of faction members possessing individual weapons" and demanded that those arms be handed over.

A third Paleostinian faction source in Damascus said that after Assad’s overthrow, "we gathered our members’ weapons ourselves and handed them over, but we have kept individual light weapons for protection... with the [authorities’] authorization."

In Yarmouk, a Paleostinian refugee camp in the Damascus suburbs that was devastated during Syria’s civil war, factional banners usually displayed at the entrance were gone and party buildings were closed and unguarded, AFP photographers said. Factional premises elsewhere in Damascus also appeared closed.

Many Paleostinians fled to Syria in 1948 following the creation of Israel, and from the mid-1960s Syria began hosting the leadership of armed Paleostinian factions. Iran-backed Paleostinian groups enjoyed considerable freedom of movement under Assad.

Washington, which designates some of the factions as terrorist organizations, last week announced it was lifting sanctions on Syria. The White House had earlier said the new Syrian regime would have to comply with demands, including suppressing terrorism and preventing "Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. According to the White House, during a meeting in Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula, largely made up of sand and oil rigs. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual haj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Formerly dictatorial and steeped in Olde Tyme Religion, deferring to Salafist holy men on all issues, it has now done a 180 and is making a serious effort to modernize, so as not to be left in the sand by its Gulf Arab neighbors. The holy men have been shoved to the background and the nation is now still dictatorial but somewhat rational. That doesn't make them trustworthy, but it's a start...

In neighboring Lebanon, a government official told AFP that the disarmament of Paleostinian camps, where factions usually handle security, would begin next month based on an accord with visiting Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

, who also met with Sharaa in Damascus last month.

’UNWELCOME’
The Iran-backed Paleostinian groups in Syria "did not receive any official request from the authorities to leave Syrian territory" but instead faced restrictions, the first faction leader told AFP.

Some factions "were de facto prohibited from operating," or their members were arrested, he said, adding that the new authorities have seized property from "private homes, offices, vehicles and military training camps in the Damascus countryside and other provinces."

Syrian authorities did not immediately provide a comment to AFP when asked about the matter.

Earlier this month, officials from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine-General Command (PFLP-GC) said Syrian authorities briefly detained factional chief Talal Naji.

In April, Islamic Jihad

said Syrian official Khaled Khaled and organizing committee member Yasser al-Zafri were tossed into the calaboose "without explanation." A source from the group told AFP on Friday that they were still detained.

The second Paleostinian faction leader, from a group that has remained in Damascus with limited representation, said there was "no cooperation between most of the Paleostinian factions and the new Syrian administration."

"The response to our contact is mostly cold or delayed. We feel like unwelcome guests, though they don’t say that clearly," he added, also requesting anonymity.

A Hamas official in Gaza told AFP that it had "channels of communication with our brothers in Syria."

Hamas has minimal representation in Syria, having left the country after the civil war there began. Hamas’s ties with the Assad regime had deteriorated amid the terror group’s support for opposition demands.

Yarmouk camp resident Marwan Mnawar, a retiree, said that "nobody knows what happened to the factional leadership," adding that "people just want to live, they are exhausted" by the conflict and factional infighting.

Irish rappers Kneecap deny Hezbollah support after terror charge
2025-05-23
[NAHARNET] Irish rappers Kneecap on Thursday denied supporting a proscribed group and vowed to "vehemently defend ourselves" after a member of the band was charged with a terror offence for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a London concert.

"We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves. This is political policing. This is a carnival of distraction," the band said on X.

Liam O'Hanna, 27, known by his stage name Mo Chara, was on Wednesday charged with showing support for a proscribed group during a performance on November 21.

London's Metropolitan Police said officers from its Counter Terrorism Command launched an investigation after a video of the event surfaced online in April.

In its statement, Kneecap attacked the "establishment" for trying to focus attention elsewhere while the population of Gazoo

"We are not the story. Genocide is. As they profit from genocide, they use an 'anti-terror law' against us for displaying a flag thrown on stage".

The charge follows growing scrutiny of Kneecap's performances after footage circulated online showing provocative political statements made by the band on stage.

One video appeared to show a band member shouting: "Up Hamas

Member of Irish band Kneecap faces terror charge for flying Hezbollah flag at concert
2025-05-22
[IsraelTimes] UK police says use of flag arouses ‘reasonable suspicion’ he supports terror group; band management offers no comment after earlier denying members support Hamas or Hezbollah

A member of the Irish rap band Kneecap was charged with a terrorism offense for displaying a flag in support of the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah, British police said on Wednesday.

Liam O’Hanna, whose stage name is Mo Chara, showed the flag during one of the band’s shows in London in November, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

It said O’Hanna, 27, displayed the flag "in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that he is a supporter of a proscribed organization," in this case identified as Hezbollah, in contravention of the 2000 Terrorism Act.

Kneecap’s management team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

O’Hanna is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18.

Nearly 40 other groups and artists, among them Pulp, Paul Weller, and Primal Scream, have rallied around the band amid an escalating row about political messaging at its concerts.

Kneecap on Monday apologized to the families of murdered British politicians and denied supporting Hezbollah or Hamas

terrorists, after UK police said it was examining footage from a Kneecap concert in London last year that appeared to show a band member shouting "Up Hamas, up Hezbollah."
Not only do they lie, but they are so arrogant they can’t be bothered to lie well.
UK police have also said it was examining a video clip of the Belfast rap trio at a 2023 gig, appearing to show one member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."

In February, the band posted a photo on social media of a balaclava-wearing individual, also apparently a group member, reading a book of statements by slain Hezbollah leader His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The late, lamented satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...>
The Belfast trio has been praised for invigorating the Irish-language cultural scene in Northern Ireland, where the status of the language remains a contested political issue in a society still split between British unionist and Irish nationalist communities. It has also been criticized for lyrics laden with expletives and drug references and for political statements.

Kneecap was not well known outside Northern Ireland before the release of a raucous feature film loosely based on the band’s origins and fueled by a heavy mix of drugs, sex, violence, politics and humor. The group’s members played themselves in "Kneecap," which won an audience award when it was screened at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It was shortlisted for best foreign-language picture and best original song at this year’s Academy Awards, though it didn’t make the final cut.

But Allah has been content to allow Israel to continue. Inshallah, dudes.
[NAHARNET] At an Arab summit in Baghdad, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced "daily Israeli violations" of Lebanese illusory sovereignty and "the ongoing Israeli occupation of positions" in the South.

He said Leb

Security Council resolution that formed the basis of the ceasefire.

The resolution says Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers should be the only forces in south Lebanon, and calls for the disarmament of all non-state groups.

Salam again urged international pressure "to oblige Israel to stop its attacks and immediately and fully withdraw from all Lebanese territory."

Assailant who stabbed author Salman Rushdie sentenced to 25 years
2025-05-17
[IsraelTimes] The man who stabbed and partially blinded novelist Salman Rushdie onstage at a Western New York arts institute in 2022 was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday for an attack that also maimed a second man, the district attorney says.

Rushdie, 77, has faced death threats since the 1988 publication of his novel "The Satanic Verses," which Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran’s supreme leader, denounced as blasphemous, leading to a call for Rushdie’s death, an edict known as a fatwa.

Hadi Matar, 27, a US citizen from Fairview, New Jersey, was found guilty in February of attacking the author in the Chautauqua County Court in Mayville, New York. He faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge.

Video that captured the assault shows Matar rushing the Chautauqua Institution’s stage as Rushdie was being introduced to the audience for a talk about keeping writers safe from harm. Some of the video was shown to the jury during the seven days of testimony.

"He’s traumatized. He has nightmares about what he experienced," Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says after the sentencing hearing, referring to what Rushdie suffered.

"Obviously this is a major setback for an individual who was starting to emerge in his very later years of life into society after going into hiding after the fatwa."

Also hurt in the attack was Henry Reese, co-founder of Pittsburgh’s City of Asylum, a nonprofit that helps exiled writers. He was conducting the talk with Rushdie that morning.

Schmidt said Matar was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the second degree attempted murder charge stemming from the attack against Rushdie and seven years for a second degree assault charged for the stabbing of Reese. The sentences will run concurrently.

Rushdie, an atheist born into a Moslem Kashmiri family in India, was stabbed with a knife multiple times in the head, neck, torso and left hand. The attack blinded his right eye and damaged his liver and intestines, requiring emergency surgery and months of recovery.

Matar did not testify at his trial. His defense lawyers told jurors that the prosecutors had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the necessary criminal intent to kill needed for a conviction of attempted murder, and argued that he should have been charged with assault.

Matar’s attorney Nathaniel Barone said his client will file an appeal.

"I know if he had the opportunity, he would not be sitting where he’s sitting today. And if he could change things, he would," Barone said.

Matar also faces federal charges brought by prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Western New York, accusing him of attempting to murder Rushdie as an act of terrorism. Prosecutors accuse him of providing material support to Leb
...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects....
’s bully boy Hezbollah group, which the US. has designated as a terrorist organization.

Matar is due to face those charges at a separate trial in Buffalo.
More from the Times of Israel:
Hadi Matar, 27, stood quietly as the judge pronounced the sentence. He did not deny attacking Rushdie, and when he was invited to address the court before being sentenced, Matar got in a few last insults at the writer. He said he believed in freedom of speech but called Rushdie “a hypocrite.”

“Salman Rushdie wants to disrespect other people,” said Matar, clad in white-striped jail clothing and wearing handcuffs. “He wants to be a bully, he wants to bully other people. I don’t agree with that.”

Video of the assault, captured by the venue’s cameras and played at trial, shows Matar approaching the seated Rushdie from behind and reaching around him to stab at his torso with a knife. As the audience gasps and screams, Rushdie is seen raising his arms and rising from his seat, walking and stumbling for a few steps with Matar hanging on, swinging and stabbing until they both fall and are surrounded by onlookers who rush in to separate them.

A jury found Matar guilty of attempted murder and assault in February after deliberating for less than two hours.

Judge David Foley told Matar that he thought it was notable that he had chosen to try and kill Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution, a summer retreat that prides itself on the free exchange of ideas.

“We all have the right to have our own ideals; we all have the right to carry them,” Foley said. “But when you interfere with someone else’s ability to do that by committing a violent act, in the United States of America, that has to be an answerable crime.”

Matar’s lawyer, Nathaniel Barone, had asked the judge for a sentence of around 12 years, citing his lack of a previous criminal record.

Matar next faces a US federal trial on terrorism-related charges. While the first, state-level trial focused mostly on the details of the knife attack itself, the next one is expected to delve into the more complicated issue of motive. He has pleaded not guilty. If convicted of the federal charges, Matar faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Authorities said Matar, a dual American-Lebanese citizen, was attempting to carry out a decades-old fatwa, or Islamic legal ruling, when he traveled from his home in Fairview, New Jersey, to target Rushdie at the summer retreat about 70 miles (110 kilometers) southwest of Buffalo.

Matar believed the fatwa that called for Rushdie’s death, first issued by Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was backed by Iran’s Lebanese proxy Hezbollah and endorsed in a 2006 speech by the group’s slain chief Hassan Nasrallah, according to US federal prosecutors.

Khomeini had issued the fatwa after the publication of Rushdie’s novel, “The Satanic Verses,” which some Muslims consider blasphemous. Rushdie spent years in hiding, but after Iran announced it would not enforce the decree, he traveled freely over the past quarter century.

Israel says killed Hezbollah commander in south Lebanon strike

on Wednesday, the latest attack despite a ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed group.

"Earlier today (Wednesday), the IDF (military) struck in the area of Qaaqaaiyet al-Jisr in southern Lebanon, eliminating the Hezbollah commander of the Qabrikha area," a military statement said.

Lebanon's health ministry reported one person killed in an Israeli dronezap targeting a car.

Israel has continued to launch strikes on Lebanon despite the November 27 truce which sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah including two months of full-blown war.

Under the deal, Hezbollah was to pull back its fighters north of Lebanon's Litani River, some 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border, and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure to its south.

Israel was to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon, but it has kept troops in five areas that it deems "strategic".

Lebanon says it has respected its ceasefire commitments and has called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its attacks and withdraw all its troops.

Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupt Gal Gadot film set in London
2025-05-03
[IsraelTimes] Production of ‘The Runner’ halted as anti-Israel demonstrators chant slogans, bang drums, wave Palestinian flags; conflicting reports on whether Israeli actress was present on set

Israeli actress Gal Gadot was reportedly removed from the set of her upcoming film "The Runner" in north London after pro-Paleostinian, anti-Israel protesters disrupted filming.

During the Thursday protest, activists reportedly rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud including "Stop bombing Paleostine," beat drums and waved Paleostinian flags.

The Daily Mail reported that approximately a dozen coppers responded to the scene and escorted the actress off the set for her safety.

According to the report, production on the film was temporarily halted and a body double stood in for Gadot.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the Jewish Chronicle reported that Gadot was not on set at the time of the protest and that her stunt double was filming when demonstrators arrived. The publication claimed the protest was triggered by social media rumors falsely suggesting Gadot would be on location.

The demonstration appeared to have been organized through encrypted messaging platforms and social media. Posts circulating on Instagram and Signal reportedly urged activists to disrupt filming due to Gadot’s high-profile support for Israel and her past IDF service.

The Metropolitan Police did not immediately comment on whether any arrests had been made.

show that Israel seriously misunderstood the impact of its 2021 operation in Gaza, which the terror group viewed as a victory that encouraged it to launch the October 7 massacre over two years later, Hebrew media reported.

At the time, Operation Guardian of the Walls was painted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an "extraordinary success," and he vowed to implement a much tougher stance against the terror group’s rocket fire.

"It is likely that this move, which would be acceptable to most countries in the world, would not be acceptable to the occupation [Israel] and would therefore increase their isolation and disconnection from them. If the occupation decides to go in this direction [of a hudna], it would tear it apart from within and lead to internal division and civil war," the letter by Sinwar reportedly said.

Haniyeh, in response, congratulated Sinwar on his "clear victory" in the fighting.

"The flag of the Al Qassam movement is waved all over the world, and millions cheer to the dear chief of staff of the resistance, Muhammad Deif, who won a divine and glorious victory," Haniyeh wrote, referencing the Hamas military wing chief, who was also killed by Israel in July 2024.

Additionally, while Netanyahu claimed in the wake of the 11-day operation that the Israel Defense Forces had destroyed "a considerable portion" of Hamas’s internal tunnel routes — its "metro" — senior Hamas officials said otherwise in a meeting with then-Hezbollah leader His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

...which still proudly claims Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

that Hamas’s tunnel network was far more extensive than they had initially believed.

Israel believed Hamas had been deterred from starting a war until October 7, 2023, when Lions of Islam burst across the Gaza border, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages to the Strip.

Israel then launched a massive air and ground operation in Gaza, vowing to bring home all the hostages and dismantle Hamas’s rule over Gaza.

-- and other Hezbollah officials -- had said that Israel must completely withdraw first and stop its violations, otherwise Hezbollah "will not let anyone disarm" it.

President Joseph Aoun said last week he hopes to restrict arms to the state in 2025 through "dialogue" with Hezbollah. "Does anyone expect us to discuss a national defense strategy as warplanes fly over our heads and there is occupation in south Lebanon," Qassem responded in a televised speech. "These are not discussions, this is surrender," he said.

Geagea considered that Hezbollah's statements would affect Lebanon's credibility and "damage its image" as Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani River and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure in the south under a November ceasefire truce.

But under that truce, Israel was also meant to withdraw all of its forces from south Lebanon. Despite the deal, its troops remained at five south Lebanon positions that they deem "strategic", as several experts said Israel's ongoing troop presence along the border played into Hezbollah's hands. Israel has also continued to carry out near-daily strikes against Lebanon, saying it is targeting members of Hezbollah who are breaching the truce agreement.

According to Geagea, Hezbollah should first abide by the ceasefire agreement, and after that Israel would withdraw and stop its strikes and Lebanon would be able to "rebuild the state."

"We cannot accept that Lebanon's credibility and image be further damaged by reneging on the ceasefire agreement," Geagea said, calling on the new government and administration to remind Hezbollah's officials of their previous commitments.

After blows to proxies, Iran advances space program with Russian assistance
2025-04-21
[IsraelTimes] Islamic Republic said to build 54-square-mile complex with spaceport at Chabahar; experts say space technology could enhance Tehran’s long-range missile capabilities

Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. is reportedly building a major spaceport as part of an effort to maintain its regional prowess following major blows to its proxies across the Middle East.

Bloomberg detailed the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s plans to build the facility, likened to Florida’s Cape Canaveral, in Chabahar, a launch site close to the equator, making it more efficient for launches.

The site, which was supposed to open last year, will contain a 54-square-mile complex, allowing Iran to launch powerful spacecraft into orbit, the Friday report said.

The program has reportedly raised concerns among Western nations — particularly the US and Israel — that Iranian space technology could be used to advance the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capabilities.

"Iran’s work on space-launch vehicles — including its two-stage, liquid-fueled Simorgh satellite carrier rocket — likely shortens the timeline to produce an ICBM due to the similarities in technology," General Anthony Cotton, commander of US Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month.

One of the program’s reported aims is to send to space 20 internet satellites named after Qassem Soleimani
, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force commander killed by a US drone in 2020.

With more satellites, Iran could better guide its long-range weapons, according to the report. John Sheldon, an Abu Dhabi-based founding partner at AstroAnalytica, a space consulting firm, was quoted as saying the Iranians "could become much more precise in their targeting and have quicker reaction times to launch their own ballistic missile forces to hit targets much more precisely."

The report did not provide precise figures regarding the costs of the program, though a senior Iranian official reportedly said last November that approximately $11 million would be provided to Iran’s space agency, despite the sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy.

According to the report, the program is also being supported by Iran’s strategic relationship with Russia, as both countries face sanctions from the West. Russian President Vladimir Putin

and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 20-year strategic pact in January.

"What Russia definitely has is the expertise," Juliana Suess, a researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, was quoted as saying. "That’s something that Iran is after."

In October, two Iranian-made satellites were sent into orbit from Russia. Iranian drones have also been used throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The advancement of the program has led the UK and the EU to sanction Brigadier General Ali Jafarabadi, who leads the IRGC’s space division. The UK has also sanctioned the Iranian Space Agency.

"Our enemies constantly try to prevent us from standing on our own feet, but this has driven us to achieve scientific and technological advancements," Pezeshkian said of the program in February.

Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor of national security and political science at the University of New Haven, told Bloomberg that the Iranian space program’s advancements are motivated by the blows the country’s proxies were recently dealt in Leb

and Syria.

"Iran has a need now, especially after the losses of its proxy power to Israel, to reestablish some kind of pathway to do power projection," he said. "They see space technology and aeronautical technology as a place to do it."

Iran has not explicitly said whether the program is intended for military purposes, claiming that its goal is to achieve the same technological capabilities as Western countries.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
Iran has called for the destruction of Israel for decades and launched barrages of long-range missiles at its adversary twice in the past year.

The Islamic Theocratic Republic recently began negotiations with the US on its nuclear program, aiming to reach a deal that will ease sanctions. It is unclear whether the Omani-mediated talks are making headway.

Iran claims that its nuclear program is intended only for civilian purposes, but it nevertheless has enriched uranium to levels that are only necessary for developing an atomic bomb.
