2 outlaws killed in shootouts |
2010-05-16 |
![]() The deceased were identified as Saidul Haq Sayeed, 40, a regional commander of outlawed group "Gono Bahini" of Kushtia and Abdul Malek alias Kata Malek, 35, an operative of "Bahini" of Pabna. In Kushtia, a team of Rab, acting on information, raided a brick field at Atigram in Mirpur upazila shortly after midnight when members of "Gono Bahini" were holding a clandestine meeting there. Ah, the brick field. The Gono Bahini must be traditionalists. No schoolyards for them. They made an early night of it, too. Sensing presence of the Rab personnel, the outlaws fired shots, prompting them to retaliate which triggered a gunfight, Major Zakir Hossain of Rab-12 told The Daily Star. Sayeed got killed in the shootout while his accomplices managed to flee the scene. Later, the elite force members recovered two light guns, seven bullets, one explosive and a knife from the spot. Sayeed was accused in at least eight cases, including two for murder and four for extortion, the Rab official said. In Pabna, a team of Rab, acting on a tip-off, raided Faila village at about 2:30am where the operatives of the outlawed organisation, "Bahini" was holding a meeting, reports our correspondent. Rab said the outlaws opened fire as they sensed their presence. Again? The RAB really need to work on reducing that 'presence' thing. Abdul Malek was caught in the line of fire of the resulting battle, while his cohorts managed to flee. His body was later recovered from the spot. Malek, son of Habibur Rahman of Shibpur village in Atghoria upazila was accused in 10 cases, including six for murder, added Rab. Rab also retrieved a rifle of foreign manufacture and a shutter gun from the scene. So that's why there wasn't a shutter gun found at Mirpur upazila... |

JMB finds friends in outlawed parties
2010-04-25 | ||
Where else would they look? Banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh has approached a new strategy to regain its strength and is trying to develop ties with different groups including the outlawed parties.
I'll bet the shutter gun got a real workout, too ... "The JMB contacted an outlawed group for firearms but failed as we detected and dismantled the link," Rab Director (intelligence wing) Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan told The Daily Star. Rab sources say JMB was left in ruins following the execution of its six top brass leaders in 2007 and constant arrest of other leaders and operatives. But now the outfit might try to establish a relation with other banned outfits like Harkatul Jihad al Islami, Hizb-ut Tahrir and even the war criminals to regain strength. Birds of a feather ... The sources add they have information that JMB Shura member Sohel Mahfuz, who hails from Charsreekal village in Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia, sought firearms several times from top Gono Bahini leader Ashraful Islam alias Mandar about a month ago. Mandar was eventually spotted and killed in a "shootout" with the Rab members in Kushtia on April 7. RAB spotted him, grabbed him, cuffed him, put him in the back of a 2-1/2 ton truck, drove to the banana grove in Kushtia, put a round of bullet behind each ear, rolled him out the back of the truck, retrieved the cuffs, carefully planted the shutter gun, took pictures, retrieved said shutter gun, lit cigars, drove back home, wiped down shutter gun, put shutter gun in velvet case, finished cigars, returned shutter gun to Sergeant Chaudhray at the RAB lock-up, transmitted pics to RAB PR department, filed expenses, and went home to bed.
Several ministers of the then ruling four-party alliance government and party leaders patronised JMJB in the vigilante operations that left several people dead. Meanwhile, Rab officials say JMB is still running its invitational activities in limited scale in all district and divisional headquarters despite being almost in a fragile state. Its invitation wing members are targeting students of schools, colleges and madrasas for recruitment. The JMB members are however a bit more active in the districts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj and Comilla, they observe. Some recently held JMB operatives revealed these to the crime busting force during interrogation, Rab officials say. Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan said, "Some arrested JMB operatives admitted that their operatives hiding in district towns as rickshaw-pullers or hotel boys continue 'dawati' activities in mosques in limited scale posing as Tabligh Jamaat men." He added JMB members first target simpleton students from madrasas, schools and colleges in guise of Tabligh men. When they think their targets have become infatuated with Islam, the militants invite them to join JMB. He however said JMB is running this activity very secretly and in a very limited scale as the outfit is under constant surveillance of Rab. The elite force, however, could not give the exact number of active JMB leaders and operatives. Former military wing commander of JMB "Boma" Mizan during interrogation said the outfit has around 100 Eshar (in-charge of a certain area) members, 500 Gayeri Ehsar (active members) and around 1,000 general members and 2,000 supporters across the country. Mizan was arrested on May 14 last year. The Rab has so far arrested 558 JMB members. Of them, 13 are Majlish-e-Shura members, 112 Ehsar members and the rest are Gayeri Ehsar or general members or supporters.

Top outlaw killed by rivals in India |
2009-11-15 |
[Bangla Daily Star] One of the top leaders of outlawed Gono Bahini Obaidul Islam alias Obaidul Haq alias Lal Bhai was shot dead in India by his rival cadres Friday night. Leader of the rival faction Azibor alias Azibor chairman claimed responsibility for the killing over telephone. Both Azibor and Obaidul were hiding in West Bengal. The incident took place at Bagdi village of Karincha in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Sources said a faction of the outfit led by Ahsanul Haq alias Mandar shot Obaidul on a street around 9:30pm while he was talking on his cellphone. He died on the spot. The killers shot 5/6 rounds with a 9mm pistol, sources said. On information, police of Karincha rushed to the spot and took the body to 24 Parganas Sadar Hospital. Shahabuddin Khan, superintendent of police in Kushtia, yesterday told The Daily Star that they have informed the higher authorities in Dhaka about the matter. According to the sources, the killing took place over rivalry between two factions of the outfit. Different sources said Azibor and Obaidul recently came into conflict over the activities of the outfit. One of Obaidul's family members said his wife was on her way to India to confirm the death. Obaidul's rival Azibor, 58, is believed to be one of the founders of Gono Bahini. He was worried about Obaidul's recent activities including killing of his (Azibor's) cadres by decapitating. In last several months, Obaidul oversaw a series of killings of his opponent Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) cadres. His faction killed at least 11 GMF cadres -- five of them were decapitated -- between June 15 and August 19. Obaidul claimed responsibility for the killings by leaving notes in the name of "Lal Bhai" on the bodies. The group "Lal Bahini" evolved after his name. The law and order in Kushtia deteriorated so much during June-August that it prompted the inspector general of police (IGP) and Rab director general (DG) to rush to the district on August 20. Rab and police jointly started a drive since then. Out of 33 alleged cadres of different outlawed parties killed in "shootouts" with Rab and police, 18 were of Gono Bahini. As Azibor blamed Obaidul for such killing of men a conflict arose between them. They then fled to India. According to sources, Azibor turned down Obaidul's proposal to bury the hatched rivalry between them and decided to kill him. Another source said in a recent development, Azibor established a link with GMF chief Aminul Islam Mukul in India. This indicates that GMF cadres also took part in the killing mission. |
