(1), and Gilgit-Baltistan (1). Polio is a highly contagious, incurable disease that can result in permanent paralysis. Repeated doses of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) during each campaign, along with completion of all essential immunisations, remain the only effective safeguard for children under five. Although vaccination drives across the country continue to improve in scope and quality, the southern districts of KP remain a persistent challenge. Limited access and difficulties in carrying out house-to-house vaccination campaigns have led to thousands of children missing doses and remaining exposed to the poliovirus. In response, targeted efforts are underway. From June 23 to 28, a special vaccination campaign in six union councils of Bannu administered OPV to 17,485 children. A similar drive is being planned for 11 union councils in North Waziristan. Moreover, preparations are in progress for a large-scale vaccination campaign across South KP in August. 2025-06-05 |
[GEO.TV] The Gilgit-Baltistan region on Monday reported its first case of polio![]() in 2025, marking a concerning emergence of the crippling disease in an area previously thought to be polio-free. Officials confirmed today that a 23-month-old child in the Diamer district has been infected with the poliovirus. The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad officially confirmed the presence of the virus in the child from Diamer, indicating that this is the first time the poliovirus has been revealed in Gilgit-Baltistan. This new case brings the total number of polio cases reported across Pakistain so far in 2025 to 11, according to health officials. The re-emergence in Gilgit-Baltistan underscores the ongoing challenges in eradicating polio nationwide and highlights the critical need for continued vigilance and robust vaccination campaigns, even in regions where the virus has not been detected for an extended period. The latest polio case comes despite an ongoing campaign to immunise 45 million children under five years of age across different parts of the country. |

[GEO.TV] Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has said that his government will not allow military operation in the province, attracting prompt censure from Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar who termed the CM's stance as being his "compulsion". "As a chief minister, I announce that we will not allow any operation in this province," CM Gandapur said while addressing a gathering of the Aman Jirga in Bannu on Friday. "We will not shy away from shedding our blood for our country but will make our decisions on our own," he added. The development came a day after CM Gandapur chaired a meeting of the apex committee, seeking to reassure the representatives of the Bannu Aman Jirga who sought increased role of police in the province among other demands. The meeting of the province's top security body discussed the issues related to terrorism and the Bannu incident wherein at least four people were killed and several others sustained injuries after a protest staged on traders' call against deteriorating law and order situation escalated and turned unpleasant. CM Gandapur reiterated his resolve against terrorism, saying the provincial authorities would not tolerate any gang in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. He stressed that police would launch action wherever they suspected the presence of miscreants. "Any highhandedness, if committed in the province, will be perceived as being against me," he remarked. Responding to Gandapur's statement, Federal Information Minister Tarar said the chief minister had to give such statements as he was answerable "to a man [Imran Khan ...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer... ] imprisoned in the Adiala Jail".
