Money transfer firms replace banks in crisis-hit Lebanon |
2022-09-05 |
[An Nahar] Like many people in crisis-hit Leb![]() , Elias Skaff used to wait for hours to withdraw cash at the bank but now prefers money transfer companies as trust in lenders has evaporated. Anyone who relies on traditional banks to receive their money "will die 100 times before cashing it," said Skaff, 50, who has survived Lebanon's three-year-old economic downturn with the help of U.S. dollar payments from a relative abroad. Once the flagship of Lebanon's economy, the banking sector is now widely despised and avoided after banks barred depositors from accessing their savings, stopped offering loans, closed hundreds of branches and slashed thousands of jobs. Last month, a local man was widely cheered as a folk hero after he stormed a Beirut bank with a rifle and held employees and customers hostage for hours to demand some of his $200,000 in frozen savings to pay hospital bills for his sick father. Increasingly, as Lebanon's deep crisis shows no sign of abating, money transfer agencies are filling the gap, also offering currency exchange, credit card and tax payment services and even setting up wedding gift registries. Skaff said he now receives his money via a Beirut branch of Western Union's Lebanese agent OMT, which says it operates more than 1,200 branches nationwide and handles 80 percent of money transfers outside the Lebanese banking sector. "We create services similar to those that banks provide at the request of our customers," said OMT front man Naji Abou Zeid. Lebanon has been battered by its worst-ever economic crisis since the financial sector went into meltdown in 2019. The local currency has lost more than 90 percent of its value on the black market, as poverty and unemployment have soared. Angry protesters have often targeted banks, trashing their ATM machines with rocks and spray cans. "We can't even withdraw a penny" from the bank, said 45-year-old Alaa Sheikhani, a customer standing in line at an OMT branch. "How are we supposed to trust them with our money?" |

Opposition MP tries to mend fences after Zahle murder |
2008-04-26 |
Opposition MP Elias Skaff canceled a press conference scheduled for Thursday at his office in Zahle to avoid protesters angry with his alleged involvement in the murder of two government supporters earlier in the week. After Skaff's announcement, Phalange party and Lebanese Forces supporters moved a sit-in they intended to hold in front of the Popular Bloc offices in Zahle to the cemeteries where victims Nasri Marouni and Salim Assi were laid to rest. March 14 official Michel Mouawad on Wednesday accused Hizbullah of sheltering Zahle criminal Joseph Zouki in south Lebanon in coordination with MP Elias Skaff. "Joseph Zouki is in south Lebanon within the framework of coordination between Hizbullah and MP Elias Skaff," Mouawad said from Bkirki. Contacts and mediation efforts were underway Wednesday evening to soothe the tense situation and prevent any unanticipated consequences. Zahle Patriarch Gregorios III Lahham instructed former ambassador Fouad al-Turk to carry out the mediation efforts, An Nahar said. Phalange party leader Amin Gemayel on Tuesday accused Skaff of "advance knowledge" of the Zahle crime and urged him to turn the culprits in to justice. Gemayel warned Skaff not to get himself, his supporters and the Zahle area involved "in a battle that is much bigger than you. Do not try to play with fire for you know what the Phalange Party is." He also urged him to "turn the culprits in, without delay, and we will be ready to confront anything." |

Geagea: New alliances would emerge after presidential election |
2007-12-10 |
![]() Murr and Skaff MPs are expected to vote Monday for the constitutional amendment while aouns MPs will refrain from voting . Geagea, in an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio, said "We are heading to electing a president next week and (former president Emile) Lahoud wouldn't be the last Christian president." Geagea criticized MP Saad Hariri, head of al-Moustaqbal Movement, for announcing the nomination of Gen. Suleiman prior to reaching collective agreement within the March 14 forces, stressing that amending the constitution was the problem and not the army commander in person. He said the decision to nominate Gen. Suleiman is "purely Lebanese." Geagea accused Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun without mentioning him by name, noting that "some Christian leaders have a unilateral viewpoint that cannot be subject to discussion." Lebanese Forces MPs, Geagea stressed, will take part in a parliamentary session set for next week to vote Gen. Suleiman into the presidential office following adoption of a constitutional amendment that permits his election. "I stress on the fact that there are no intra-Christian grudges, however there are differences in view points." "Had the Christians been rallied around one stand they would have been the strongest party" in Lebanon, Geagea said. This was viewed as criticism of General Michel Aoun, who is accused of dividing the Christian community . |

Aoun - Murr parliamentary alliance is falling apart |
2007-12-02 |
![]() Murr angrily responded by saying: "I do not accept at all such a talk from you. Before opening your mouth and talking about a change in our position you should stick to our agreements and not strike deals with your buddies and relatives behind our backs. As an ally I have the right to take positions that are consistent with my own convictions and beliefs. I have never let you down, I have supported you in the last election, you know this and everybody knows this very well." Murr added Here Aoun interjected by saying "you know we are against the government of Siniora, you know we are constantly attacking Siniora and calling his government 'illegitimate', how dare you tell the media that you support his government?" Murr angrily responded to Aoun by saying " during the previous meeting you declared the position of the bloc to the media without ever discussing this with us. Look here he added : The main issue at this time is the election of a new president and the nomination of Major General Suleiman for the presidency of Lebanon , and everyone knows, I was the first to put forward the name of the commander of the army and encountered opposition from you because you are against this proposal. I want to say now frankly, I am back and I support this idea despite the position taken by you, because I know you do not support the commander of the army." Murr then looked around and said " there are colleagues in the bloc that support General Suleiman. " Here MP Elias Skaff responded by saying: "My bloc supports the candidacy of the army commander and we want to get the country out of this political vacuum." Following the heated disagreement General Aoun abruptly left the meeting and went outside to talk to the media. |

Aoun headed for win in Lebanon vote |
2005-06-13 |
![]() Counts conducted in 278 of 336 polling stations in Kesrwan-Byblos showed that Aoun maintained a substantial lead over opponent candidates, winning at least 55,000 votes. Opposition alliance candidate Mansour al-Bon, was trailing with 27,000 votes by the latest count. Aoun's list comprises prominent pro-Syrian politicians including Druze leader Talal Erslan in the Baabda-Aley district, former minister Elias Skaff in the Bekaa's Zahle district and former interior minister Suleiman Franjieh, who will be running in the last round of elections in the north next week. A coalition of Christian groups, including the Christian Lebanese Forces, headed by jailed Christian leader Samir Geagea, and Christian Qornet Shehwan Gathering, embraced by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir, ran against Aoun's ticket in the Kesrwan-Byblos district. Other members of the coalition included the Phalange Reform Movement, headed by former President Amin Gemayel and the Future Movement, headed by Saad al-Hariri. In the Upper Metn, the list backed by Aoun and pro-Syrian former interior minister Michel Murr also won with only one seat going to an opponent candidate, MP Pierre Gemayel of the Phalange Reform Movement. |

Lebanon's loyalists reject premier's resignation |
2005-04-02 |
![]() Leaving the meeting, Karami told reporters: "I will try to form a government." Karami was set to step down at a meeting on Wednesday with President Emile Lahoud, but the premier-designate delayed the move pending consultations with his political allies at the Ain Al-Tineh gathering, which joins the country's pro-governmental, pro-Syrian forces. Berri also said that the new government's focus will be on delivering a new electoral law based on the mohafaza (large electoral district) and not the qada (small electoral district) which is a major point of contention between the government and the opposition. Berri said: "We want an electoral law based on the Taif Accord, and the Taif Accord calls for the adoption of mohafaza as an electoral district. We will not agree on anything else." |
