IJT advised not to enforce ideology on students
2007-11-28
Following the publishing in the Urdu press of an article called ‘Tragedy of Punjab University’ written by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, a debate has started over the attitude of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) in Punjab University.

People are debating whether the article is a warning to the IJT by Qazi or a ‘face saving’ attempt by him to improve his party’s image. The IJT is JI’s students wing.

The article, which was printed on Tuesday, discloses that the IJT had pre-planned the manhandling and detaining of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in Punjab University on November 14.

The article reveals how Imran contacted JI bigwigs to appear on campus and discuss with students the emergency and call for the restoration of democracy. The article states that the JI and IJT disallowed Imran to go it alone, as the university is JI and IJT turf, and urged him to have a joint show with the IJT led by JI Punjab chief Liaqat Baloch.

The article reveals the emotional attachment Qazi has with the IJT and states that the IJT’s violent attitude has become a source of disgrace for it, as it gives the media fodder to defame JI’s student wing.

The article also states the complaints of several elements within the IJT about violence being perpetrated by the IJT on campus. Qazi urges the IJT not to be violent and not to force its strategy and ideology on campuses and advises it to apologise to Imran and to refrain from such acts in the future.

PU sources told Daily Times on Tuesday that the article had sparked widespread debate on and off campus over whether the IJT would follow Qazi’s advice or not.

Some circles believe that the article was a face saving attempt by Qazi, as it did not mention the action taken by the JI over the IJT’s violations and hooliganism. They assumed that it looked as if some elements within the IJT were not in the control of JI bigwigs.

Others believe that Qazi truly meant what he wrote. They believe that the JI chief wants the IJT end its hooliganism and let students decide whether to join or not to join the IJT.

Punjab University Academic Staff Association ({PUASA) president Prof Mumtaz Ahmad Salik, who is also affiliated to the JI, said he would not comment on Qazi’s article, as it was a personal point of view.

“I am not aware of the story behind the Imran Khan episode,” he said, adding, “However, we believe that students should stay in their limits and respect their elders.”

He said there should also be respect for democratic standards. He said such a message promoted tolerance, accommodation and democratic norms on campus with equal opportunity for all students. He said students must focus on their studies and curricular activities.

Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch, who has been confronting JI/IJT policies and ideology on campus, said a significant number of PU students and teachers believed that this could be a face saving attempt by the JI.

He said, “It is believed that the IJT considers themselves the real force of the JI and if there is a problem, the JI should take action against its student wing. This, however, has not been seen.”

He said people knew that JI bigwigs had been approaching the PU administration to restore expelled IJT students. “If the JI really wants to improve its image, it should not take part in such activity,” he added.

PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said the advice from the senior politician and leader was positive and must be taken accordingly. “It gives the IJT a new policy to follow,” he said. “It is also clear that nobody on campus is above the law.”

PU IJT nazim Attiqur Rehman, who replaced Muhammad Ayub after the Imran episode, said Qazi wrote the article as advice to the IJT. He denied the presence of violent elements in the IJT, saying, “We live in the hearts of the students. There are bigger examples of violence by the state. The real issue here is lifting the ban on student unions to allow students to act freely and democratically. Till the ban is not lifted students will take part in violence.”

He alleged that certain elements were trying to break the unity between PU teachers and students and the IJT with the aim to allow the regime to enforce “anti-people policies like such as the Model University Ordinance”.

However, the IJT would not allow anyone to break the student-teacher alliance, he added.

PU declares BA degree of ex-NWFP minister bogus
2007-03-07
The Punjab University (PU) has declared the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree of former NWFP transport minister Naqibullah Khan bogus, a PU official told Daily Times on Tuesday. He said the Federal Education Ministry had asked the university a few days ago to verify the degree and that after verification the degree was found to be a fake.

The official said Naqibullah Khan had allegedly used the degree of a private student from Sialkot to get himself elected. According to the particulars mentioned on the fake degree, Naqibullah Khan graduated from Islamia College, Railway Road, Lahore, in June 1970. His roll number was 15655. He got a second division by getting 331 marks. His optional subject was Persian. The registration number on the degree is 70-z-530 and serial number 332452.

A source in PU’s examination branch said verifying the degree was not difficult as the degree had the registration number of a private candidate from Sialkot whereas Naqibullah had shown himself to be a regular student at Islamia College. PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan said the Education Ministry had been told that Naqibullah Khan’s degree was bogus. However, he refused to go into details.

Lay off and stay off, PU tells IJT activists
2005-12-27
The Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists expelled and rusticated from the Punjab University (PU) have been declared persona non grata, official sources told Daily Times on Monday.
That hasn't stopped them from tromping in and throwing their weight around before...
Sources said a circular issued by the administration declared PU IJT Nazim Tahir Farooq alias Allah Buksh Leghari (Islamic Studies), Muhammad Fakhar Manzoor alias Al-Mani (Institute of Business Administration), Muhammad Akhtar (Institute of Administrative Sciences), Muhammad Amer (Institute of Administrative Sciences), Qazi Imdadullah (Mass Communication), Salman Ayub (Institute of Statistics), Muhammad Awais (Mass Communication), Imran Ashraf (Institute of Education and Research) and Afzal Ahmed (Institute of Education and Research) undesirable. “Their entry in the Punjab University is banned with immediate effect,” the circular said.
No more Double Secret Probation?
Copies of the circular have been sent to all deans of faculties, principals of constituent colleges, directors of institutes, chairpersons of departments, Students Affairs Adviser, Chairman Hall Council, Controller of Examinations, Inspector General of Police (Punjab) and Senior Superintendent Police (Operations).
Good idea. Send out a memo. That'll fix it.
Some university sources said the measure was merely eyewash and most of the expelled students were present in the campus.
No! Reeeeeeeaaaally?
They said the university had expelled only those students whose academic sessions had almost ended, and most of the rusticated and expelled students had already taken their final examinations. PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan confirmed that a circular had declared those students undesirable. He said the university had taken all precautionary measures but would continue its reforms to improve the environment. He said the university advised all students to pay attention to studies, and that no political party would be allowed on campus.

Police catches militant trying to bomb sessions court
2005-09-30
Security agencies on Thursday morning foiled an attempt by an alleged activist of a banned militant organisation to explode a remote control bomb near the sessions court. Police arrested Zahid, 35, while planting the bomb at around 7:30am and seized sixty yards of wire, electric gadgets and two hand grenades from him. Zahid of Rawalpindi obtained terrorism training from Afghanistan, District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan told reporters. The DPO said that police had also recovered terrorist literature from Zahid showing other cities and important personalities on the hit list of the banned outfit. He said that police was fearing bomb blasts during Ramadan and the security had been beefed up, enabling them to arrest the terrorist.

IJT defying PU orders to remove admission stalls
2005-09-15
LAHORE: Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) has not removed its admission stalls in Punjab University (PU) despite the fact that the PU administration had issued notices to seven IJT activists, including its university nazim. According to a Daily Times survey on Wednesday, the IJT stalls were set up outside various departments including the Institute of Education and Research, Philosophy, College of Environmental Sciences, Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Mass Communication Department and the Institute of Business Administration. Meanwhile, the PU administration, which had claimed on Monday that it would lodge a case against 15 to 20 IJT activists for attacking the vice chancellor’s office, had still not sent a list of suspects to the Muslim Town area police. “We were asked to point out a few dozen unidentified people in the first information report (FIR),” Muslim Town Police Station Duty Officer Naib Muharrar Afzal said on Wednesday.

PU Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (r) Arshad Mahmood refused to comment. PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan told Daily Times that all admission stalls would be asked to pack very soon. He said, “We will take disciplinary action against the students running these stalls in due course.” He said that the seven IJT activists were bound to reply to their notices by September 16. The university administration was waiting for the replies and would take action against such elements, he said. He said that the list of the IJT activists to be mentioned in the FIR had been delayed due to this reason and records of various students were being scrutinised.

Mob burns down cop shop after SI 'desecrates Quran'
2005-09-12
SARGODHA: A violent mob set a police post in Farooqa, Sahiwal tehsil, on fire after a sub-inspector allegedly hit a two-month-old baby and desecrated the Quran.
What'd he do? Hit the baby with the Koran?
According to the protestors, a police team led by SI Muhammad Mukhtar raided Muhammad Ramzan's house after Amir Khichi complained that Ramzan owed him money.
"We wants our grease, see?"
The SI allegedly 'tortured' the two-month-old baby of Ramzan's sister Kausar, at which she brought out the Quran.
"Leave the baby alone or I'll hit you with this holy book!"
The SI allegedly threw the holy book on the ground.
"That's fer yer holy book!"
News of the incident caused anger among locals, who protested and set the police post ablaze.
"Aaaar! Getcher torches an' pitchforks and swarm the cop shoppe!"
Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, the DPO in Sargodha, denied that the SI had desecrated the Quran or hit the baby.
"No, no! Certainly not!"
The DPO told reporters on Sunday afternoon that "miscreants" had spread rumours and provoked people to set the police post ablaze, thus destroying police records.
No! Really?
The DPO said that a case had been registered against 64 people for torching the Farooqa police post of Sahiwal police station and 47 of them had been arrested. The police were also considering registering a case for violating Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and using loudspeakers in mosques to instigate the protest.
When there's a riot there's always a mosque involved. Have they given any thought to taking the loudspeakers out of the mosques? Followed, perhaps, by the loudmouths?
The DPO said that a five-member committee consisting of two SPs, the Sargodha ASP, and Sahiwal and Sillanwali DSPs had been formed to investigate the incident.

IJT book fair continues despite registrar's vow
2005-05-12
The second day of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) book fair at the Punjab University attracted hundreds of students and people. The registrar, who had promised on Tuesday not to let the fair continue, was unable to stop the event.
Showed him who was in charge, didn't they?
Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, PU registrar, and Lt Gen (r) Arshad Mahmood, PU vice chancellor, avoided comment on Wednesday. "I left the office early, so I am unable to say anything about the issue," Khan told Daily Times on Wednesday.
"I know nothing! No-thing! Tell them, Hogan!"
A number of Jamaat-e-Islami and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal leaders, including Liaqat Baloch and Hafiz Idrees, visited the fair and spoke to the students. The book fair will conclude on Thursday, and not Friday, as the IJT planned earlier. Zubair Ahmed Gondal, IJT central nazim, said that "certain elements" were trying to separate the Islamic and Pakistani ideologies from the education system, but this would not be allowed to happen.
