Interesting Coincidence - The Last 8 Members of Congress Who Died Were All Democrats |
2025-05-23 |
[BusinessInsider] No coincidence at all. While the Republicans started replacing their country club Republicans like Mitt Romney in 2007 with first TEA Partiers and then MAGA Trumpsters, the Democrat Old Guard were holding tight to power — leaving only when carried out by six, including a state funeral attended by all the former presidents except Donald Trump, who was openly told his presence wasn’t wanted.
In the last two and a half years, eight sitting members of the House or Senate have died in office. Every time, it's been a Democrat. Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, died on Wednesday at 75, after a battle with esophageal cancer. He's the third House Democrat to die in the last three months. If Democrats had gained a narrow 1 or 2-seat majority in 2024, they would have lost it by now. The streak of Democratic deaths could just be something of a coincidence. After all, there are plenty of elderly and diminished Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including former Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. But Democrats do tend to be older than Republicans, on average. A report from FiscalNote found that in the last Congress, the average House Democrat was six years older than the average House Republican, while the gap was seven years in he upper chamber. There are some potential structural reasons for this as well, including the seniority system, which Democrats tend to employ more than Republicans. The deaths are just another data point in a long-running conversation that's been raging within the Democratic Party for years about age and gerontocracy, which culminated last year in President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race after a disastrous debate performance. Since then, Democrats in particular have been taking age more seriously, including when it comes to who's serving in important committee positions. Connolly notably beat back a challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York in December for the Oversight position he's now vacated. Here's the full list of Democratic lawmakers who have died in office since November 2022:

Some House members have mental faculties so diminished they can no longer do their jobs — and others voting drunk, high: lawmakers |
2025-03-09 |
Explains so much... [NYPOST] Up to a dozen members of Congress reportedly have mental faculties so diminished they can no longer do their jobs — with some even showing up drunk or stoned to cast votes. ''There's no question that somewhere between six and a dozen of my colleagues are at a point where they're — I think they don't have the faculties to do their job,'' Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn) told Politico, which spoke to 25 members of the House and Senate who spilled the tea on their unnamed colleagues. A Republican colleague concurred, with an important addendum. ''I have a difficult time sometimes telling between the deterioration of members and a handful who are just not very smart,'' the unnamed politician said. After President Biden's 2024 presidential campaign spectacular collapse due to his age-related cognitive issues, the issue of elected officials hanging on past their expiration date has come sharply into focus — with neither chamber of Congress being spared. Former Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Sen. Dianne Feinstein ![]() held office despite being so diminished she was forced to cede power of attorney to her daughter. Texas Rep. Kay Granger — the powerful former chair of the House Appropriations Committee — was found in an assisted living facility last year after being AWOL for six months. ''The United States Congress is the world's most prestigious senior center,'' Rep. Ritchie Torres, 36, (D-NY) quipped to The Post. Some politicians claimed late night votes in the House are rarely cast entirely sober. ''Every time we do an 11 p.m. vote, a minority of the chamber has a zero blood alcohol content. Now, that's different than voting drunk. I don't think I've ever seen somebody demonstrably drunk on the floor,'' Himes noted. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) claimed to have seen one GOPer who ''show[ed] up drunk'' several times — and that ''there were one or two Dems I thought might be high on something, but not drunk.'' Added Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY): ''I would say DC is more like 'Veep.' We've had a couple of 'Veep' moments in my office.'' |

Toronto man arrested in Seattle after threatening to bomb Sen Patty Murray's car |
2024-09-18 |
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] A Canadian man was arrested in Seattle last week for targeting Senator Patty Murray ... Senator-for-life (D) from Washington state, reputedly not the sharpest intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body. To hear Patty tell it, if we'd built roads and bridges like Osama bin Laden had 9-11 never would have happened... (D-WA) on social media with bomb threats. According to court documents obtained by KOMO News, 29-year-old Louis Bernabe flew from Toronto to Seattle and booked a room at the W Hotel, which is located approximately three blocks from Murray's office. Bernabe does not have a residence or employment in the Seattle area and it remains unclear when he arrived in the Emerald City. On September 10, Bernabe posted a threat to bomb Murray's car on social media that said, ''Senator Murray @senpattymurray, I am warning you ONCE AND FOR ALL. Quit your trashy play of partisan nonsense AT ONCE, or I swear to God, I WILL have you check the undercarriage of your car every single day to ensure you don't get BLOWN UP to pieces. The people of this county have had it with the nonproductive crap from both sides. I have not seen my girlfriend in FIVE YEARS. We have the right to be in couple and reproduce if we choose to. If you deny us this right, you are nothing more than a nasty animal. In this case, I will condone whoever decides to put you down. Rabid creatures should be put to death.'' Sounds reasonable The following day, Bernabe, who has no criminal history or past convictions, went to Murray's Seattle office and asked her staff how to meet her. He then posted a selfie standing on the floor where Murray's office is located. He also posted a picture of a Heckler & Koch UMP submachine gun. According to court documents, Bernabe was booked into the King County jail for two counts of making bomb threats and felony harassment. He was originally held on $50,000 bail before it was increased to $250,000. China's New York spy is a wake-up call |
2024-09-06 |
Linda Sun and her husband are accused by the Justice Department of promoting the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda on key concerns such as isolating Taiwan, underplaying the Uyghur genocide, and promoting positive attitudes toward Beijing. In return for her service, Sun received millions of dollars from China. These funds allowed Sun to purchase luxuries, including a Hawaii penthouse and a Ferrari. It’s concerning that a Chinese agent had tentacles into the highest levels of New York politics. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to China’s illicit influence campaigns against the United States. Other recent examples of successful Chinese influence operations include the saga of Fang Fang, a Chinese honeytrap agent who targeted Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and the still unnamed spy inside the office of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. It’s clear that China’s espionage and influence operations targeting America are vast in scale. FBI Director Christopher Wray warned in 2020 that the bureau was investigating Chinese espionage efforts in "all 56 of our field offices. And over the past decade, we’ve seen economic espionage cases with a link to China increase by approximately 1,300%." That caseload has not declined since 2020. China’s influence efforts extend to the state and local levels, seeking to forge early links with the next generation of political stars. This concern underlines why Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) deserves greater media scrutiny over his long-term relationship with China. Yes, the new Chinese border tsar has been appointed and is simply waiting to take office. It’s not just America facing this challenge. These Chinese antics extend across the globe. In the United Kingdom, lawyer Christine Lee was identified by that nation’s security service for working to influence members of Parliament in China’s favor. As part of these efforts, Lee donated $760,000 to a Labour member of Parliament, Barry Gardiner. Gardiner has adopted views in China’s favor. Sometimes, China’s influence efforts are quite extraordinary. Until recently, for example, New Zealand had two Chinese agents serving as members of its parliament. San Francisco proposal would allow lawsuits over grocery store closures |
2024-04-08 |
![]() Dean Preston, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, introduced what he calls the Grocery Protection Act — which is based on a proposal the board approved in 1984 that was vetoed by then-San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein. Preston's proposal would require grocery store owners to provide six months written notice to the Board of Supervisors as well as the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD). The store would also be required to post notices at all entries and exits as a means of informing customers and the general public. The rule wouldn't preclude closures due to a store being unprofitable. "It was a good idea in 1984, and it's an even better idea now," Preston said in a press release. "Our communities need notice, an opportunity to be heard, and a transition plan when major neighborhood grocery stores plan to shut their doors. Meeting the food security needs of our seniors and families cannot be left to unilateral backroom decisions by massive corporate entities." "You didn't build that!" A San Francisco supervisor proposed a law requiring grocery stores to give six months notice before closing a location. The six-month notice requirement would be waived if the closure is caused by business circumstances that weren't reasonably foreseeable at the time notice would've been required, or if the closure was due to a natural disaster or emergency. It would also not be required if the business is in the process of actively seeking capital or business that would allow the closure to be postponed or avoided, and the business has a reasonable and good faith belief that giving the closure notice would've precluded the store from obtaining the capital or business needed to stay open. |

He did work hard to create the response he is now getting, poor man. [IsraelTimes] A victory speech by Democrat Adam Schiff![]() following Tuesday’s primary win in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, is seemingly cut short as raucous protesters repeatedly interrupt him with shouts of "Free Paleostine," "Ceasefire now" and "Let Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... live." Some protesters were removed, but many were spread throughout the crowd, forcing Schiff to first try and speak above the bellowing before appearing to hurry his remarks, pausing several times. Some reports suggest Schiff had been forced to cut his speech short by the protest. Schiff, a Jewish congressman who has been outspoken in support of Israel’s right to defend itself, changed directions Tuesday and endorsed the Biden administration’s call for a Gaza ceasefire as part of a broader agreement that would include the release of hostages. "My position is the same as the administration," Schiff says. ![]() "I have no illusion that I can win or that I stand a chance to win, which is also quite liberating, because I’m not running to win a campaign. I have no prayer," he tells me. Simchowitz, who is running for Senate as a Republican in a seat that has been held by a Democrat for 32 years, is perched at the kitchen island in one of his four homes, an updated Victorian farmhouse on an acre in Pasadena that he’s been building into an exhibition space and artist residency for the past year or so. He calls it Red Barns. In a tan Altadena Hardware shirt and one of his signature bucket hats, the contemporary art dealer once dubbed "the Art World’s Patron Satan" offers me sparkling water and a bite of his blueberry muffin. Unlike the Democrats vying for Dianne Feinstein’s open seat—Representatives Katie Porter, who has a $12 million war chest and Adam Schiff ($32 million)—and the Republican front-runner, former L.A. Dodger Steve Garvey, Simchowitz doesn’t seem concerned with shaking hands, kissing babies, or winning votes. "Sometimes if you know you’re going to lose you can only win," he says. Police Groups Slam Biden Judicial Pick for Ties to Group That Celebrated Cop Killers as Freedom Fighters |
2024-03-03 |
[WashingtonFreeBeacon] Adeel Mangi is already under fire for work with an anti-Israel think tank. Biden judicial nominee Adeel Mangi already faces headwinds to his nomination over ties to an anti-Israel think tank that hosted holy warriors on the anniversary of 9/11. Now, he’s facing the ire of police organizations over his links to a group that hails six cop killers as "freedom fighters." Five police unions representing 280,000 officers have urged senators to oppose Mangi’s nomination for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals over his position on the advisory board of the Alliance of Families for Justice. "The fact that Mr. Mangi, as an Advisory Board member, aligns himself with an organization advocating for the release of convicted cop-killers is seriously disturbing," said the National Sheriffs’ Association, which represents more than 3,000 sheriffs across the country. Mangi’s affiliation with the Alliance of Families for Justice "raises concerns about a potential bias against victims and law enforcement," the sheriffs’ group said. At issue is the Alliance of Families for Justice’s support for and connection to convicted cop killers. Mangi joined the left-wing group in 2019 and is still listed as an advisory board member. In 2021, the Alliance of Families for Justice called for the parole of former black nationalists Sundiata Acoli, Mumia Abu Jamal, Mutulu Shakur, Russell Maroon Shoatz, Jamil al-Amin, and Kamau Sadiki—all serving life sentences for murdering coppers. The alliance refers to them as "elder freedom fighters" who were set up by the FBI, the Washington Free Beacon reported. Kathy Boudin, a member of the terrorist group Weather Underground, served on the Alliance’s board from its founding in 2016 until her death in 2022. Boudin, the mother of ousted the Socialist paradise of San Francisco ...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964... prosecutor Chesa Boudin, was convicted of murdering two New York coppers during an armored truck robbery with Black Liberation Army members in 1981. The Alliance of Families for Justice established a fellowship in her name last year. The Rockland County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, the police union that represented the two officers murdered during Boudin’s heist, said Mangi’s affiliation with the Alliance of Families for Justice shows "his lack of care for life and the rule of law." The opposition from police groups could put additional pressure on swing-state Democrats to vote against Mangi, who, if confirmed, will have jurisdiction over federal cases in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Republicans oppose him over his advisory board position with the Rutgers Law School’s Center on Security, Race and Rights, an anti-Israel think tank that hosted anti-Semites and a convicted terrorist at an event on the20th anniversary of 9/11. The conservative Judicial Crisis Network launched ad campaigns to call on Democratic Sens. Bob Casey (Pa.), Jon Tester (Mont.), and Sherrod I absolutely trust HillaryBrown ![]() (Ohio) to vote against Mangi over his position at Rutgers. The White House has accused Republicans of "Islamophobia ...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do... " for opposing Mangi, who would be the first Moslem to serve on a federal appeals court. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee released letters from the police groups ahead of a confirmation vote for Mangi, for which a date has not been set. The National Association of Police Organizations, which represents 241,000 coppers, said Mangi had "made his choice" to associate with a group that "exalt[s] unrepentant killers who were convicted following legal trials in courts of law." The New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association, which has 32,000 members, said Mangi’s "leadership and association with the Alliance of Families for Justice makes it clear he cannot be impartial in dealing with law enforcement officers." The 1,000-member State Troopers NCO Association of New Jersey said, "We strongly condemn any group who advocates in favor of those who have attacked and killed law enforcement officers." Mangi has not responded to several requests for comment about his role at the Alliance of Families for Justice. He was not asked about the group during his confirmation hearing. The Alliance of Families for Justice did not respond to a request for comment. Adam Schiff's past effort to fan Russia collusion tale boomerangs in California Senate bid |
2024-01-29 |
![]() Rep. Adam Schiff’s past effort to fan the Russia collusion tale is boomeranging as he now seeks the vacant U.S.Senate seat in California. Former MLB star Steve Garvey, now a GOP candidate, accused Schiff, D-Calif., of lying to the public on the debate stage this week, prompting Schiff to claim he was censured for "standing up to a corrupt President." Garvey and Schiff are among the candidates in the race for the Senate seat held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. In the California primary election, the two candidates who receive the most votes head to the general election for a head-to-head match-up in November. A recent poll released by Emerson College found 25% of respondents said they would vote for Schiff and Garvey was in second place with 18%. "I called out Adam Schiff for being censured for lying to 300 million Americans. His response: 'I would do it all over again,'" Garvey wrote Thursday on X. Schiff was censured in a resolution stating that Schiff held positions of power during Trump’s presidency and “abused this trust by saying there was evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.” There was no such evidence. Schiff had drawn attention to himself throwing the "Russian collusion" narrative at anyone who opposed him. At one point, he accused on live television then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson of "being a Russian agent" and said to Carlson, according to New York Magazine, “You’re carrying water for the Kremlin!” ![]() During the candidate debate, Garvey said to Schiff, "Sir, you lied to 300 million people. You can't take that back." Schiff shot back, "I was censured for standing up to a corrupt president and you know something? I would do it all over again." After the exchange, Garvey said when elected officials "talk down to us" they're "essentially misleading us." Garvey also said the American people "understand what's real and unreal." The censure resolution that passed the GOP-led House charged Schiff with abusing the trust of the American public when he was chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. According to the resolution, Schiff falsely claimed that "evidence of collusion that, as is clear from reports by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, and Special Counsel Durham, never existed." The resolution also noted that on September 26, 2019, Schiff "misled the public by reading a false retelling of a phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky." Schiff became notorious as one of the loudest proponents vouching for the now widely-discredited "Steele Dossier." Even after the infamous dossier was proven to be false, Schiff stuck by it, telling NBC's Chuck Todd that “Steele did reveal that the Russians were trying to help elect Donald Trump." Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed Schiff from the Intelligence Committee in January 2023. The resolution passed the House in June. In a separate exchange, Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., another candidate for the open Senate seat, argued that earmarks "invite corruption." Schiff defended earmarks, saying Feinstein brought back billions for California from Washington and he would do the same. Porter shot back: "Incorrect, the earmarks process actually shortchanges California. The data show that diverse districts and diverse states actually get half as much money. We only get two senators, which means every state gets two sets of earmarks." Democrats introduce 'billionaires tax' on unrealized capital gains |
2023-12-03 |
Wyden has spearheaded an effort to make a mark-to-market proposal law for years, and the new legislation is the latest iteration of that effort. The plan would affect those with net worths of over $1 billion. It would also apply to high earners who made more than $100 million in three consecutive years. If it were to become law, the plan would be a massive departure from how the United States handles federal tax policy, as it would apply levies on the unrealized gains of assets such as stocks and bonds for the wealthiest people. The bill targets legal investment and spending strategies that billionaires use to shield themselves from tax liability. Wyden’s office said the legislation goes after a strategy dubbed "buy, borrow, die." Wealthy taxpayers can invest in appreciable assets such as stocks and real estate and then borrow against the untaxed appreciated value of those assets to fund other purchases. "America’s tax code is riddled with loopholes that allow the ultra-wealthy to get away without paying their fair share while working families have to play by a different set of rules and pay taxes out of each paycheck," Wyden said. Loopholes you wh0res wrote The proposal differs from the current tax regime because gains would be taxed even if not realized. Under the tax code, billionaires whose investments increase in value are taxed on that growth, known as capital gains, when those investments are finally sold off. "You can only have a successful economy if you have a tax code that treats everyone fairly," he added. "My billionaires income tax will make that a reality by ensuring those at the very top start paying their fair share, just like the rest of us." Co-sponsors of the legislation include several senators on the Left: Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), John Fetterman (D-PA), and Jeff Merkley (D-MA). That includes the state’s competitive US Senate race featuring four Democrats, including three sitting US House members. The convention was disrupted multiple times Saturday afternoon by pro-Palestinian demonstrators demanding a cease-fire in Gaza. Party officials had increased security for the weekend convention, requiring participants to be scanned and have their bags searched before entering the convention hall. Following the afternoon session, a large crowd of demonstrators gathered at the hall. Sacramento police closed some roads near the convention center but soon reopened them. Shortly after voting ended party endorsements, Democratic Party spokesperson Shery Yang said the evening’s events had been canceled. “Due to circumstances beyond our control, and for the safety and security of our delegates and convention participants, we are cancelling tonight’s caucus meetings, hospitality suites and VoteFest taking place at the convention center,” Yang says.
