Ex-Maryland mayor sentenced to more than a century in child pornography case may end up serving a fraction behind bars [MSN-Law&Crime] The 48-year-old former mayor of College Park, Maryland was sentenced to more than 100 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to 140 charges for the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Associate Seventh Circuit Court Judge Karen H. Mason on Monday ordered Patrick Wojahn to serve 150 years in a state correctional facility, but decided to suspend 120 years of that sentence, authorities announced. Specifically, Wojahn in August pleaded guilty to 60 counts of distribution, 40 counts of possession, and 40 counts of possession of child sex abuse material with intent to distribute, records show. Judge Mason also sentenced Wojahn to serve five years of probation upon his release and to register as a sex offender. Under Maryland state law, defendants convicted of non Effectively, that means that if Wojahn is released and violates the conditions of his probation, he can be sent back to prison for the remaining 120 years of his sentence. THE SENTENCE In a news conference following the sentencing hearing, prosecutors said that the CSAM found on Wojahn’s electronic devices was quite disturbing and included pictures and videos of infants and toddlers being sexually abused by adults. Prosecutors reportedly also said that there was hundreds of child victims being sexually abused in the material found on Wojahn’s devices, noting that Sherlocks were able to identify 52 of the victims, at least one of whom had died by suicide. Several of those victims penned victim impact statements that prosecutors read in court, The Baltimore Sun reported. As previously reported by Law&Crime, Wojahn in March resigned as mayor of College Park — home to the University of Maryland campus — following his arrest in March 2023. Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. [Regnum] American non-governmental organization (NGO) Freedom House, inc.
“The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation recognized the activities of the international non-governmental organization Freedom House, Inc. as undesirable. (USA). Among the main activities of Freedom House is promoting the establishment of the so-called “dominant” role of the United States in the world,” the department’s website says. They noted that since the beginning of the special operation, this organization has been actively promoting the policies of unfriendly states regarding the conflict in Ukraine, including discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. Moreover, Freedom House calls for comprehensive assistance to Kyiv “to defeat Russia,” the confiscation of frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine, and the introduction of new sanctions against Russia and third countries that allegedly support Moscow. “The organization provides information, financial, legal and other support to Russian opposition structures, pro-Western and LGBT activists (the movement is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation - editor’s note), communities defending their interests, and persons convicted of committing terrorist crimes,” - added the Prosecutor General's Office. As Regnum reported, on May 3, the Ministry of Justice added the “Committee of Ingush Independence” to the register of undesirable organizations (an organization that performs the functions of a foreign agent in the Russian Federation and is recognized as undesirable). On April 27, the Ministry of Justice included in the list of undesirable organizations “Feminist Anti-War Resistance” (an organization that performs the functions of a foreign agent in Russia and is recognized as undesirable).

Their dovish hopes clipped, some Gaza border residents make peace with becoming hawks |
2024-03-10 |
Conservatives are just liberals who’ve been mugged by reality, ‘tis said. Not true in all cases, but often enought. I fall into that category, though previously I was the common case of professing liberal values while living a conservative lifestyle — because the lifestyle is what leads to success. After 9/11 I came to realize that those luxury liberal beliefs are truly harmful for all but the upper middle class and above. [IsraelTimes] Civilians who followed Hamas into Israel to loot and vandalize communities on October 7 showed their true faces, says one Nir Oz survivor who no longer sees conciliation as possibleThe fact that the Hamas ![]() turbans who invaded her kibbutz on October 7 wanted to murder everyone there came as no surprise to Irit Lahav, a peace activist from Nir Oz, where one in four residents were killed or kidnapped. Even before the massacre, Lahav had entertained no illusions about Hamas. Like many other kibbutzniks and moshav residents with dovish attitudes near the border with Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... , she had seen how the group deliberately targeted civilians, including by firing rockets into residential areas at specific times to increase loss of life. Yet she had always believed that Hamas’s actions were distinct from and unrepresentative of the wishes of the silent majority of Paleostinian civil society — ordinary and decent people whom she imagined were concerned primarily with providing for their children and improving their own lives under difficult circumstances. That belief was shattered on October 7, by what she says were "hundreds of civilians, including women and kiddies, who followed" behind the terrorists, invading Israeli communities to celebrate and join in the pillaging, vandalization and destruction of Israeli communities. "This wasn’t something I had factored in," said Lahav. In the wake of October 7, Lahav and other Israelis who had supported and campaigned for territorial compromises with the Paleostinians as a pathway to peace now say they are being forced to reconsider their views. "I used to think Paleostinians were good people, like you and me. That Hamas were thugs who got in the way of the population’s desire for a good life: a pretty home, a good car, a good job, a nice yard; good schools for the children." Lahav said from the temporary home she shares with her daughter Lotus, a new three-bedroom apartment on the fifth floor of a residential project in Kiryat Gat where many Nir Oz survivors have relocated to. "After October 7, I realized I was wrong. Just as the Israeli government represents Israelis, Hamas represents the people of Gaza." Lahav, a travel agent who used to belong to a group of volunteers who would drive Paleostinians in need of medical treatment from Gaza to hospitals in Israel, now believes that "all of the people of Gaza, all of them, hate us to a degree where they would murder babies and pillage our property with zero compunction." The Road to Recovery, an Israeli nongovernmental organization that helps Paleostinians reach medical treatment in Israel, remains operational, although its volunteers have brought patients only from the West Bank since October 7 because Israel is not issuing entry permits from Gaza. "It’s not simple, but I want to keep feeling human," Yael Noi, the nonprofit’s director, told (Hebrew) Channel 12 in December. ’REASSESSING MATTERS’ In Kibbutz Gvulot, situated about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the border with Gaza, Bella Haim, a Holocaust survivor whose grandson Yotam Haim was kidnapped to Gaza and later killed there accidentally by Israeli troops, is also "reassessing matters," she said during a talk last month with delegates of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. "I used to go to so many demonstrations for peace and coexistence. And now I’m at a crossroads when it comes to my beliefs. October 7 changed everything and I’m searching for the right path," she said. In Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where turbans killed over 60 people, a doormat outside Shahar Shnorman’s home is still emblazoned with the Arabic-language words for "welcome." The longtime peace activist, one of only three residents now living in the evacuated community, thinks Gazooks should be allowed to return to the homes they fled when Israel launched its still-ongoing military campaign to topple Hamas in Gaza. He doesn’t want the small enclave’s living space eaten by a buffer zone and opposes an Israeli reoccupation. Shnorman still believes a diplomatic solution to the conflict is possible, but no longer thinks the time is ripe and he backs Israel’s military campaign, he said. Once it ends, he believes Israel should adopt a policy of meting out a harsh response to any infraction of the "firm border" he would like to see between Israel and the Paleostinian territory. Outside the Gaza border region, some in the cultural elite, which generally trends left, are grappling with similar dilemmas. Earlier this month, Idan Raichel, one of the country’s most prominent musicians and a vocal proponent of Arab-Jewish coexistence, told the Yedioth Ahronoth daily in an interview that "the war has made it impossible not to shift rightward. Even for leftists." He cited "the turbans who went into children’s bedrooms, a space of innocence; the rapes, the torture, the abductions." Ivri Lider, another prominent musician and gay rights advocate, has said since the war broke out that he could no longer have written the lyrics "an enemy may actually be a friend," which appear in one of his songs. October 7, he told the Walla news outlet, "makes it very difficult to have the basic desire for dialogue, rapprochement and coexistence in mutual dignity." Singer Achinoam Nini, who goes by Noa abroad, disputed Raichel’s assertions on Facebook. Nini, a left-wing activist who in the past attributed (Hebrew) Paleostinian terrorist attacks to alleged racism by Israel, argued that one can feel pain as an Israeli "and at the same time cry for the many innocents on the other side and reach out to help them," she wrote. "Do not sentence millions of people, condemning them to death with a wave of your hand, even when your eyes are flooded with tears every day every hour." A REDUCED VISION OF COEXISTENCE Lahav, like many other Israelis, is still figuring out what her changed worldview means for her convictions, she said in her Kiryat Gat apartment. Its sunny areas were occupied by her favorite plants from her yard in Nir Oz, which she salvaged and is nursing back to health after weeks of neglect following the surviving residents’ hurried evacuation on October 7. On the wall hung an ornate Tibetan tapestry that the Dalai Lama gave her when she was living in his Buddhist temple in Dharamsala, India. Hiding in the sheltered area of her home with her daughter, some five months earlier, Lahav had heard young boys from Gaza looting their residence, she said. Her neighbor reported hearing a woman singing softly as she browsed through the neighbor’s home for items to steal. Another neighbor reported hearing at least one child speaking in Arabic. Items stolen from Nir Oz included sunglasses, electronics, jewelry and even women’s underwear. Resettling Gaza with Israelis is out of the question for Lahav, who also opposes West Bank settlements. But her vision for coexistence has been reduced to a bare-bones version of what she used to aspire to, she said. "We will live here, they will live there, with a robust fence and harsh military retaliation for any violation of the peace," she summed up. She is neither eager to resume volunteering to drive Gazooks into Israel for medical treatment nor impressed with the images of devastation coming out of Gaza, she said. "I don’t believe a word they’re saying. Not the corpse count, not the images," she said. "I know the Israel Defense Forces avoids killing civilians whenever possible and I don’t believe [the Hamas-reported] figure of 30,000 dead." The number comes from unverified statistics by Hamas sources in Gaza which do not differentiate between civilians and combatants. Israel says it has killed some 13,000 Hamas-led fighters. Footage taken by Israeli troops in Gaza is making Lahav readjust her perception of the living conditions there before the war. "When I thought of Gaza, I thought about barefoot children on dirt roads. That’s the sort of images we kept seeing out of there. But now the soldiers are streaming images of beautiful, paved streets. High-rise apartment buildings. It was all a show! They took foreign media to their filming locations. So now I don’t believe any video they show," said Lahav. She herself is less than thrilled about giving up the pastoral pathways of her kibbutz for a Kiryat Gat midrise. The working-class Mizrahi city, where left-wing parties garnered only 13% in the previous election, is a far cry from her previous liberal milieu. But the former regular participant in protest rallies against the right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nothing but good things to say about her former political rivals. "For the better part of a year, right-wingers in this country spoke about us kibbutzniks with disgust, like we’re pampered, Ashkenazi, liberal elites," she said. But following October 7, "the same people were devastated by what happened to us. They’re embracing us in the most amazing way in Kiryat Gat," she said. Lahav still harbors hope for true Israeli-Paleostinian reconciliation, but for the time being, she’s pessimistic that those she once tried to foster peace with will be ready anytime soon. "As long as their school shows are about ’deaders’ killing Jews, there is no way forward," she said. "So change right now seems to me to be doubtful and far away." |

The West is furious: China renamed Tibet |
2023-12-15 |
by Dmitry Kosyrev [RIA] It all started with material that went around many media outlets: after the State Council (government) of China published the “White Paper” last month. regarding Tibet, Beijing has stopped calling it Tibet and instead uses the word "Xizang". The calculations began: before the book was published, Tibet was mentioned 700 times in the official media, and after that it was all about Xizang. A similar incident (i.e. confusion) occurred in Russia in 1997, when Hong Kong ceased to be a British colony and was returned to China. In Russian writing circles, not particularly literate philological Nazis began to rage, claiming that the Beijing authorities had authoritarianly renamed Hong Kong to Hong Kong and everyone should now write only Hong Kong in Russian. Although in fact no one renamed anything, just two characters meaning “fragrant bay” were and are read in northern, state Chinese as Hong Kong, and in the southern dialect they also sound like Hong Kong. But no one renamed Tibet either. In Chinese for a very long time it has been precisely Xizang, that is, “Western pantry,” or even “Western treasury.” Do you think the locals call it Tibet? Nothing of the kind, they would rather use another word - Bod. Then where did it all come from? And, for example, from the traveler Guillaume de Rubruk (XIII century). The word he gives is "Tibet" almost of Sogdian origin, but in the end it became... Yes, yes, English. And let’s not forget that the British at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries had such thoughts - how to take Tibet into their hands after India, but it didn’t work out (in including Russia interfered). It remained Chinese, as it had been for centuries before, except for short periods of relative autonomy. You may think that our conversation is about the fact that more and more often, all over the world, countries and peoples are correcting such mistakes of the colonialists. Calcutta became Kolkata, Madras became Chennai, Burma became Myanmar. Not to mention the fact that Delhiis gradually accustoming the world to the fact that the country has long been called Bharat, and India is the same thing, but more like a favorite geographical name of the British, rather than a “power”. All this is sad, because colonialism gave rise to a variety of romances of robbery and murder, as well as delights in the conquered exotic. In addition, relearning is long and tedious for us. But if we are seriously talking about the decline of the colonial era, which lasted five centuries, then a lot of things will change here, except for British names, and a lot of things will have to be slowly relearned. So, is this what the Tibet story is about? Not really. In China they just started calling it Xizang in their English-language publications, but in Chinese it already sounded like that. And note that it is not in the Chinese style to force foreigners to change something in their language and other habits. So, a gentle hint at how the world is changing. But the real story is not philological, it is completely different, it is something about an elephant that no one noticed. Let's say it again: what kind of document became the reason for the “renaming scandal”? Andhere it is, entirely and in English, is called “The Policy of the Chinese Communist Party in Tibet in a New Era: Approaches and Achievements.” Here is a report on the reign ofXi Jinping (since 2012) plus some ideas for the future. This is an event, because there is a sea of facts and other statistics. For example: over the specified period, the Tibetan economy grew 2.28 times, an average of 8.6 percent per year. That is, the mountainous region, difficult to live in, was among the record holders even against the backdrop of other Chinese miracles. There is also such a figure - 30 million tourists a year. This is for those who think that repression, suppression of local culture and other horrors are happening in Tibet: if the region is open to such an extent, then there will not be much atrocity there. Conferences, exhibitions, the opening of more and more border crossings, for example withNepal. As for culture, we note the revival of the unique Tibetan opera, the restoration of monasteries, the protection of ancient relics, and the creation almost from scratch of the University of Tibetan Medicine, with the introduction into scientific circulation of up to 600 ancient books on it. In fact, there is another topic here, it concerns not the departure from colonial names, but what development and culture are. Tibet has always been a legend because even in the middle of the last century it was a mountainous territory frozen in the deep Middle Ages - with ancient secrets, but also with wild poverty. And the mystical glory of Tibet lay precisely in this. But if a region becomes rich, open to the world, if its culture is dug up from burial grounds and studied in universities, does this mean that the old Tibet has been destroyed? There are many such places on the planet. I remember a discussion about the lifestyle of the Orang Asli tribes inMalaysia: they are happy to wear jeans and take modern medicine - is this good or bad? This is clearly one of the most difficult questions for humanity. |

4 Army Personnel Killed In Encounter With Terrorists In J-K's Rajouri |
2023-11-28 |
22 November [OneIndia] Four Army personnel including two officers and two jawans have bit the dust in an ongoing encounter with holy warriors in Jammu and Kashmir ![]() Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there.... 's Rajouri district on Wednesday, 16 Corps sources told ANI. "Troops including Special Forces are deployed in the area after inputs were received about movement of a group of holy warriors in the area. 16 Corps Commander and Rashtriya Rifles' Romeo Force commander are monitoring the operations closely. More details awaited," 16 Corps sources told the news agency. The encounter broke out between holy warriors and joint forces of the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Bajimaal area of Dharmsal following a cordon-and-search operation, a police official told PTI. Local residents said that a cordon-and-search operation has been going on in the area since Sunday to track down holy warriors operating in the area. "Due to the operation we were asked to stay back at home and not venture out. Our children stayed back at home and did not attend the school," a villager told PTI. The firing is going on in the forest area close to the village, he said. Officials said the two holy warriors trapped at the encounter site in Bajimaal appeared to be foreign nationals and had been moving around in the area since Sunday. They even took shelter at a place of worship, they said. The border districts of Rajouri and Poonch have witnessed increased terrorist incidents over the past one-and-a-half years. On November 17, a terrorist was killed in an encounter between holy warriors and security forces in the Guller Behrote area of Rajouri district. On August 7, a terrorist was bumped off as an infiltration attempt from across the border was foiled by the Army in the Degwar area of Poonch district. Five Army soldiers were killed during an anti-terror operation in the Kesari hills of Rajouri district on May 5. |

China wants to choose the next Dalai Lama. He has other plans |
2023-08-08 |
[Economist] The boy’s existence had been little more than a rumour. When he appeared during a ceremony in March on a small throne below the Dalai Lama, the ageing leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the monks and nuns in the audience didn’t seem to recognise him. The boy, about eight years old with short black hair, wore a copper-tinted robe with oversized cuffs covering his hands and — as if to add to the mystery — a white mask over his face. Midway through the ceremony, held in Dharamsala, the north Indian refuge for Tibetan exiles, the Dalai Lama paused and gestured nonchalantly toward the boy: "We have the reincarnation of Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoché of Mongolia with us today." This was, in the world of Tibetan Buddhism, a mic-drop moment. The last Jetsun Dhampa — one of the religion’s most important figures — died in 2012. But the significance of the announcement was not only religious. The Dalai Lama had managed to outmanoeuvre China in the geopolitical chess game of reincarnation. Seven years ago, the Dalai Lama told a press conference in Mongolia that he was convinced Jetsun Dhampa’s reincarnation had been born in the country. "However, the boy is very young right now," he said, "so there is no need for haste in making an announcement." The Chinese government, which claims sole authority over all Tibetan Buddhist reincarnations, was incensed. It closed its main border crossing with Mongolia and delayed loan negotiations with the cash-strapped country. |

Communists Declare Dalai Lama Cannot Reincarnate Outside of China |
2023-07-03 |
[Breitbart] The Chinese Communist Party’s quest to dominate Tibetan Buddhism continued this week with a press conference on Thursday to assert that the communist regime will control the death of the Dalai Lama and not allow him to reincarnate outside of China. The state-controlled China Tibetology Research Center and the All-China Journalists Association assembled pro-communist “experts” to claim that the Chinese government has controlled the reincarnation of the living Buddhas since ancient times and that the Dalai Lama himself, living in exile in India since China’s colonization of Tibet in 1959, should have no role in the process. Tibetan Buddhists believe in the Dalai Lama as the foremost of several living Buddhas, who have reincarnated in various men throughout the ages to lead the faith. The Chinese Communist Party considers Tibetan Buddhism a direct threat to the regime, which demands full allegiance to and worship of dictator Xi Jinping. As it has done with Christianity and Islam, Beijing has attempted to eradicate Tibetan Buddhism through a ban on children adhering to any faith and the practice of imposing communist “Sinicization” of the faith, placing trusted Party members in leadership positions. The Han Chinese government has also attempted to erase Tibetan identity wholesale by imposing the Mandarin language in the region – even renaming Tibet with the Han name “Xizang” – and eroding the use of Tibetan written language in schools. The government has also forced thousands of Tibetan children into “boarding schools” in which they are indoctrinated into communism, learn Mandarin, and are kept from learning their culture or religion. The human rights organization Freedom House ranked occupied Tibet as the least free region in the world in its 2023 Freedom in the World report, published in March. |

India Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Ballistic Missile After Minor Border Clash With China |
2022-12-17 |
[ZH] See? The NORKs aren't the only ones flexing India on Thursday carried out a test launch of a long-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Agni-5, which came days after a renewed clash between Indian and Chinese troops along the disputed Himalayan border. Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the successful launch of Agni-5 from Abdul Kalam Island in eastern Odisha state marked a "historic milestone" for the country’s defense industry. "The missile will add great value to the defense and strengthen national security to a greater extent as it can travel 5400+ plus kilometers," Joshi said on Twitter. The Agni-5 uses a three-stage solid-fueled engine and is capable of striking targets at ranges up to 5,000 kilometers (around 3,100 miles) with "very high degree of accuracy," according to the Indian Ministry of Defense. This was not the first time India test-fired a surface-to-surface Agni-5 ballistic missile. The ministry test-fired one on Oct. 27, 2021, which it said reaffirmed India’s policy to have "credible minimum deterrence" that underpins its commitment to "No First Use." India’s "No First Use" policy stipulates that nuclear weapons will only be used in retaliation against a nuclear attack on Indian territory or Indian forces. Renewed Clashes The recent Agni-5 missile launch came on the heels of fresh tensions between India and the Chinese regime following clashes between their troops along the disputed Himalayan border on Dec. 9. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that Indian troops prevented Chinese soldiers from crossing the line of actual control (LAC) at the Tawang Sector in India’s northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, a territory that China claims as its own. "The Chinese attempt was contested by our troops in a firm and resolute manner," Singh told parliament. The border clash resulted in minor injuries on both sides. Singh said that India’s commander met with his Chinese counterpart following the incident and demanded that Chinese troops "refrain from such actions." This has occurred as a video of an earlier unreported violent brawl between Chinese and Indian troops believed to have taken place in September 2021 in Arunachal Pradesh went viral on social media this week.

Indian, Chinese troops clash at Line of Actual Control border in fresh faceoff, biggest clash since 2020
2022-12-14 | |
[OneIndia] During Tawang clashes, Chinese soldiers were 200 in number, faced more injuries. India and China were locked in a face-off in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh on December 9. Clashes were reported and it has now been confirmed that the Chinese soldiers were around 200 in number. The Chinese PLA according to reports came armed with spiked clubs with nails, monkey fists, taser guns and sticks. The PLA soldiers were challenged by the Indian soldiers who were roughly 50 in number who in turn stopped their advance. A back-up Indian squad arrived at the location within half-an-hour following which a clash took place. According to reports the conflict began with stone-pelting before both sides engaged in hand-to-hand combat. The Indian side was not armed with tasers guns. While 15 Indian soldiers suffered injuries, more Chinese soldiers were maimed. BJP MP from Arunachal Pradesh (East) Tapir Gao said that he had heard that a few injuries were reported on the Indian side, but added the Chinese PLA suffered much more injuries. He also said that the Indian soldiers will not budge an inch. Defence Minister addresses Parliament: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday addressed the Lok Sabha over the incident. Singh said that the attempt of the PLA was contested by the Indian Army in a firm and resolute manner. He also added that this had led to the face-off between the two armies resulting in a minor scuffle which prevented the PLA from transgressing into the Indian territory. The Indian side compelled the Chinese PLA to return to their posts. Singh also clarified that none of the Indian soldiers were seriously injured or killed during the festivities by the Chinese PLA troopers. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said that in certain areas along the LAC in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh, there are areas of differing perception wherein both sides patrol the area upto their claim lines. This has been the trend since 2006, the statement read. "On 09 December 2022, PLA troops contacted the LAC in Tawang Sector which was contested by own troops in a firm and resolute manner. This face-off led to minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides," the statement added. Both sides immediately disengaged from the area. As a follow up of the incident, own Commander in the area held a Flag Meeting with his counterpart to discuss the issue in accordance with structured mechanisms to restore and tranquility, the statement also read. IAF closely monitoring situation along LAC in Arunachal Pradesh [OneIndia] The Indian Air Force is closely monitoring the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh following an attempt by the Chinese PLA troops last week to unilaterally change the status quo in the Tawang sector in the border state, people familiar with the development said on Tuesday. They said the IAF has also stepped up its overall surveillance in the areas in view of the Chinese attempt of transgression on December 9, adding it follows standard operation procedures that included scrambling of fighter jets in case of specific security concerns. ''The situation is being monitored closely by both the IAF and the Army,'' said one of the people cited above. The people indicated that the IAF has increased the frequency of the sorties by its combat jets in the region. On Monday, the Indian Army said troops from the two sides clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector and the face-off led to ''minor injuries'' to a few personnel from both sides''. The face-off took place amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Parliament on Tuesday that the Indian troops bravely thwarted the attempt by Chinese PLA from ''unilaterally'' changing the status in Yangtse area of the Tawang sector and there were no fatalities or serious casualties to the Indian troops in the scuffle. ''On December 9, PLA troops tried to transgress the LAC in the Yangtse area of Tawang Sector and unilaterally change the status quo. The Chinese attempt was contested by our troops in a firm and resolute manner,'' Singh said. ''The ensuing face off led to a physical scuffle in which the Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts,'' he said. It was the first major clash between the India and Chinese armies since August 2020 near Rinchen La in eastern Ladakh. Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a brief face-off near Yangtse in October last year as well and it was resolved following talks between local commanders of the two sides as per established protocols.
In recent years, soldiers from both sides have patrolled areas along the disputed border. Opposing soldiers often come into contact and the two Asian giants have accused each other of sending troops into the other's territory. In June 2020, a clash in the Karakoram mountains in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh sparked tensions after soldiers fought with stones, fists and clubs. At least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers died. The countries both stationed tens of thousands of troops backed by artillery, tanks and fighter jets along their de facto border. After multiple meetings between military commanders, some Indian and Chinese soldiers have pulled back from a key friction point in Ladakh, but tensions between the two Asian giants remain. In November, Indian army chief Manoj Pande said there had been "no significant reduction" in Chinese troop strength in Ladakh. He said the border situation was "stable but unpredictable." It's like they're trying to manipulate your emotions to achieve the ends of the deep state in DC. Huh, Facebook employs psychologists, don't they? Weird. Just a coincidence, I guess.
Previously unreported policy language obtained by The Intercept shows that this year the company repeatedly instructed moderators to deviate from standard procedure and treat various graphic imagery from the Russia-Ukraine war with a light touch. Like other American internet companies, Meta responded to the invasion by rapidly enacting a litany of new policy carveouts designed to broaden and protect the online speech of Ukrainians, specifically allowing their graphic images of civilians killed by the Russian military to remain up on Instagram and Facebook.
To know who rules you, simply find who you are not allowed to criticize.
Though the majority of users on social platforms owned by Meta live outside the United States, critics charge that the company’s censorship policies, which affect billions worldwide, tidily align with U.S. foreign policy interests.
Meta’s public-facing Community Standards rulebook says: "We remove content that glorifies violence or celebrates the suffering or humiliation of others because it may create an environment that discourages participation" — noting a vague exception for "graphic content (with some limitations) to help people raise awareness about these issues." The Violent and Graphic Content policy places a blanket ban on gruesome videos of dead bodies and restricts the viewing of similar still images to adults 18 years and older. In an expanded, internal version of the Community Standards guide obtained by The Intercept, the section dealing with graphic content includes a series of policy memos directing moderators to deviate from the standard rules or bring added scrutiny to bear on specific breaking news events. A review of these breaking news exceptions shows that Meta directed moderators to make sure that graphic imagery of Ukrainian civilians killed in Russian attacks was not deleted on seven different occasions, beginning at the immediate onset of the invasion. The whitelisted content includes acts of state violence akin to those routinely censored when conducted by the Israeli military, including multiple specific references to airstrikes.

Enes Kanter Speaks Truth To Chinese Power |
2021-10-24 |
Hat tip to Powerline. Read more at the link. Enes Kanter of the Boston Celtics is a hero. He stood up to the thuggish, repressive regime of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his native Turkey. His criticism of Erdogan probably put him in physical danger. Kanter fled Indonesia where he was holding a basketball camp for children, after his manager told him Turkish intelligence agents had been sent to capture him. Now, Kanter has taken on the mother of all thuggish, repressive regimes — Red China. He released a powerful video (see below) lambasting the Red Chinese regime for its unconscionable treatment of Tibet. In the two-minute video, Kanter documents China’s reign of "cultural genocide" against Tibet. He calls out Chinese president Xi Jinping, labeling him, correctly, a "brutal dictator." He does this while wearing a T-shirt featuring an image of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. And he notes that any Tibetan who owns a picture of the Delai Lama faces arrest for that act alone. Kanter went further. He appeared for Boston’s game against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday wearing brightly colored shoes saying "Free Tibet." But Kanter didn’t take the court in that game. He was an un-used reserved in the Celtics’ overtime loss. The Chinese government’s reaction to Kanter’s video was as swift as it was predictable. The Chinese video-streaming giant Tencent cut the live broadcast of the game between the Celtics and the Knicks. According to the Washington Post, the Tencent Sports app notes that upcoming Celtics games will not be broadcast live. Instead, unlike other NBA games, they will be reported by text and photo — if even that, when the dust settles. The question now is how the NBA will respond. When Daryl Morey, a team executive, voiced support for freedom in Hong Kong, the NBA kowtowed to Red China. Morey, presumably under pressure, said it was not his intention to offend anyone. The NBA’s enormous Chinese revenue stream was saved.
