Death of aviation worker sparks row in Somalia
2024-02-21
[Garowe] The death of a seasoned aviation officer has sparked yet another conflict in Somalia, with the breakaway region of Somaliland
...Republic of Somaliland is an unrecognised sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, recognised internationally as a de jure part of Somalia. It is located in the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden with approximately 5.7 million residents as of 2021. The capital and largest city is Hargeisa. The government regards itself as the successor state to British Somaliland, which united from 1960 to 1991 with the Trust Territory of Somaliland (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic. Under the Siad Barre regime, Somaliadestroyed ninety percent of Hargeisa Per international law, once you're in, you gotta stay in, no matter how bad it smells....
suspecting foul play just as the country struggles with internal strife including the recent controversial deal signed by Æthiopia and Somaliland.

In a statement, Somaliland’s Civil Aviation and Airports Authority said it’s urgently reviewing the situation of workers from Somaliland who are currently working for the Somali Civil Aviation Authority as part of the then civil aviation caretaker program created by ICAO according to a statement by Somaliland TV.

The statement comes moments after police in Mogadishu recovered the dead body of Abdinasir Muse Abdirahman, an employee of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority who was born in Somaliland. Police said six suspects have been arrested and an investigation is underway.

Without giving evidence, officials in Somaliland have blamed the federal government of Somalia for the death of the civil aviation employee whose body was found in a house in southern Mogadishu on Sunday.

Reached out by VOA, Deputy Info Minister Abdurahman Yusuf al-Addala says Somalia police are conducting an investigation and have arrested suspects; he says the government will wait for the outcome of that investigation before commenting.

A report seen by Garowe Online shows that the dear departed was found in his residence within the El Qaalow neighbourhood, Wadajir district. Muse, 32, was born in Gebiley, northwest [Somaliland] and worked at the Somali Civil Aviation Authority.

The incident comes at the time Somalia is at loggerheads with authorities in the region of Somaliland, who recently signed a deal with Æthiopia. The deal, details made public indicate, would see Æthiopia getting 20 kilometers of Red Sea in exchange for Somaliland's recognition as a sovereign state.
Shabelle Media adds:
Abdinasir Muse Dahable, an employee of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority of Somalia, was found dead last night at his home in Mogadishu.

The Mogadishu airport officer is reported to have died after being tortured and strangled to death, although there is no official information that can confirm this claim.

The Somali police said that six suspects have been arrested for the murder of the late Abdinasir Muse, 32 years old, whose body was found in his residence in El-Qalow village.

Police said they have conducted an investigation and have evidence from the crime scene.

The slain man has recently returned from studying abroad and graduated in the science of Air Navigation from a university in the UK. He was one of the ICAO staff in Hargeisa.

Chad's new strongman emerges from father's shadow
2021-04-21
The king is dead. Long live the king!
[AlAhram] In the aftermath of the death of President Idriss Deby Itno, who ruled with an iron fist for three decades, his 37-year-old son has quickly emerged as the desert state's new strongman

The youthful general Mahamat Idriss Deby who stood watch over his father as head of the presidential guard wore trademark dark glasses that hid a powerful character with a past and personality little known to the public.

The four-star general was not on any list of heirs to the throne drawn up by experts, who said they believed the veteran warlord and president had not chosen a successor and seemed to worry little about it.

But Mahamat immediately took charge of a transitional military council and appointed 14 of the most trusted generals to a junta to run Chad until "free and democratic" elections in 18-months time.

ALL-POWERFUL GUARD
Commander in chief of the all-powerful red-bereted presidential guard or DGSSIE security service for state institutions, he carries the nickname Mahamat "Kaka" or grandmother in Chadian Arabic, after his father's mother who raised him.

"The man in black glasses", as he is known in military circles, is said to be a discreet, quiet officer who looks after his men.

A career soldier, just like his father, he is from the Zaghawa ethnic group which can boast of numerous top officers in an army seen as one of the finest in the region.

"He has always been at his father's side. He also led the DGSSIE. The army has gone for continuity in the system," Kelma Manatouma, a Chadian political science researcher at Gay Paree-Nanterre university, told AFP.

However over recent months the unity of the Zaghawas has fractured and the president has removed several suspect officers, sources close to the palace said.

Born to a mother from the Sharan Goran ethnic group, he also married a Goran, Dahabaye Oumar Souny, a journalist at the presidential press service. She is the daughter of a bigwig who was close to former president Hissene Habre, ousted by Idriss Deby in 1990.

The Zaghawa community thus look with some suspicion on Mahamat, some regional experts say.

'NIGHT OF LONG KNIVES'
"He is far too young and not especially liked by other officers," said Roland Marchal, from the International Research Centre at Sciences Po university in Gay Paree.

"There is bound to be a night of the long knives," Marchal predicted.

Brought up by his paternal grandmother in N'Djamena, Mahamat was sent to a military lycee in Aix-en-Provence, southern La Belle France, but stayed only a few months.

Back home in Chad, he returned to training at the military group school in the capital and joined the presidential guard.

He rose quickly through the command structure from an armoured group to head of security at the presidential palace before taking over the whole DGSSIE structure.

Mahamat was acclaimed for his efforts at the final victory in 2009 at Am-Dam against the forces of nephew Timan Erdimi's forces. Those forces had launched a rebellion in the east and had reached the gates of presidential palace a year earlier, before being pushed back after French intervention.

He finally moved out of the shadow of his brother Abdelkerim Idriss Deby, deputy director of the presidential office, when he was appointed deputy chief of the Chadian armed force deployed to Mali in 2013.

That brought Mahamat to worked closely with French troops in operation Serval against the jihadists in 2013-14.

The SNA-owned radio station reported on Saturday evening that the successful operation by the Special Forces (Dahab) was aimed at flushing out turbans and disrupting their plans to terrorize the residents in the Lower Shabelle region.

The military radio said the sting operation was carried out in Bulo Haji village in the Janale area of the Lower Shabelle region in the southern part of the Horn of the African nation.

"SNA special forces (Danab) carried out an operation in Bulo Haji village in Janale area of Lower Shabelle region, killing more than 10 al-Shabaab members including three of al-Shabaab leaders," it said.

Social media pages loyal to the Assad regime, paid tribute to the dead Colonel, noting that he has been promoted posthumously to Brigadier.
No promotion ceremony is planned. No cake, no punch, no two-hour lunch. It's just not the same.
