Sportswear abayas become a market favorite in Saudi Arabia |
2017-11-16 |
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Women's sportswear abayas began to make a statement in women's clothing shops, particularly in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, merchants said, Saudi daily Ajel reported. Demand on the new designs is expected to rise with the approaching date of allowing the families to enter the stadiums which is expected to start immediately in the New Year. Pictures of the designs of the sportswear abayas of certain teams such as al Etihad, al Hilal, al Ahli and al Nasr showed the difference in the colors that represent each team. The prices of the abayas ranged between $66 and $106, depending on the quality of the cloth used, with the expectation that prices will decline in the future with increasing quantities offered. The former head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Makkah, Sheikh Ahmed bin Qassim al-Ghamdi found it completely acceptable for women to enter football stadiums with colorful abayas stressing that, "there is nothing wrong with that." Commenting on how some shop owners started importing colorful abayas for women who are fans of football teams in accordance with the implementation of the decision to allow the families to enter the stadiums, Sheikh al-Ghamdi told Agel "we encourage women to enter the stadiums wearing the color of their favorites team," adding that "it is permissible by the Charia." . He stated that: "Abayas are like the Jilbab and doesn’t have a specific color." He continued saying that: "Religion does not order women to wear a specific color, so it is not acceptable to force people to do something that Allah hasn’t ordered." Sheikh al-Ghamdi explained that "the aim is to cover up women in Jilbab, whether it is the color of the team they encourage or any color they choose." |

2016-04-27 |
![]() Under changes approved by the Saudi cabinet on Wednesday, religious officers will no longer be allowed to detain people and instead must report violators to police or drug squad officers, the official Saudi Press Agency said. Officers of the Haia force, also known as the Mutawaa, must "carry out the duties of encouraging virtue and forbidding vice by advising kindly and gently" under the new rules, it reported. "Neither the heads nor members of the Haia are to stop or arrest or chase people or ask for their IDs or follow them - that is considered the jurisdiction of the police or the drug unit," the regulations say. Saudi Arabia's religious police enforce the country's interpretation of Islamic law including segregation of the sexes, ensuring that women cover themselves from head-to-toe when in public. Formally known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, its members also patrol shops to make sure they are shuttered during time prayers. |

[ARABNEWS] A member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) verbally abused the chief of the organization, Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Asheikh, at a mosque on Sunday, according to a local newspaper. Turki Al-Shulail, front man of the Haia, said the incident happened shortly after the noon prayer in the mosque at the Haia headquarters in Riyadh. "A Haia staff member approached the sheikh and started talking to him in an impolite manner using derogatory words even though the sheikh gently asked him to calm down. However, Switzerland makes more than cheese... the man continued his impudent manner of speaking and upset the worshippers, until some security officers led him out of the mosque," the daily quoted Al-Shulail as saying. Meanwhile, ...back at the pond, Gloria slowly backed away from the eight-foot bull frog. If the creature croaked she would surely be deafened... the organization said a Haia man was hurt while trying to arrest a man for allegedly insulting a woman. 2014-07-05 |
[ARABNEWS] The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) in Dammam has locked awayInto the paddy wagon wit' yez! a man who pretended to be a faith healer and was blackmailing three sisters by publishing their private photos with him. The Haia officials ambushed the blackmailer after the women reported him to the relevant authorities. The women believed in performing incantations and went to see the faith healer who deluded them into believing that they were possessed by jinn. He beat one of them on the head, performed incantation and gave her a ring, which he made her believe belonged to a king of jinn. He then took a photo of her in addition to downloading some private photos from her mobile. He later used the photos to blackmail the woman into doing his bidding. The man also deluded one of the other two sisters into believing that she was possessed and needed treatment at the hand of another man in a neighboring country. He escorted her and her husband to the neighboring country where another fake faith healer examined her and upon return to the Kingdom he lived in the woman's house for couple of months to monitor her case closely. While staying in her house, he took pictures of the woman and used them against her, which triggered family disputes between the woman and her husband leading to a divorce. The Haia also discovered that the imposter had stolen gold and jewelry from a third sister after telling her she was possessed. He had also taken photos of her and threatened to show them to her relatives unless she bowed to his demands. After a while, the women could not put up with the fear he created in their lives and decide to report him to the authorities who arrested him and put an end to the sufferings of the three sisters. |

Tunisian nude photo draws Islamist ire |
2013-03-23 |
[MAGHAREBIA] An Islamist activist on Thursday (March 21st) hacked the Facebook page of feminist group Femen's Tunisian branch and posted religious messages after images of two members of the group posing topless were published on the internet, AFP reported. "Thanks to God we have hacked this immoral page and the best is yet to come," read one message signed by "Al-Angour". "The page has been hacked and God willing, this debauchery will disappear from Tunisia," read another. Almost two weeks ago, a girl named Amina posted nude photos of herself online with the caption, "I own my body. It is not the source of anyone's honour," written on her bare chest. The 19-year-old girl described her move as an act of protest to mark International Women's Day. On Wednesday, a picture of a second topless Tunisian girl was circulated on the internet to protest the status of women in Tunisia. The page of Femen Tunisia with more than 6,800 likes defended the right of every girl to go naked. Staging topless protests is a tradition of the Ukrainian feminist group, which confirmed its intention to open a branch in Tunisia, a request rejected by the Tunisian women's affairs minister. Siham Badi promised to "work to confront it and legally ban it because it is incompatible with the Islamic religion and Tunisian traditions". Amina's act of defiance stirred extreme reactions from Tunisia's radicals, including death threats. Adel Alami, who heads the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice supposedly affiliated with the salafist movement, called for stoning the girl. "It would have been better before letting her appear on TV to have her tested medically and determine whether she was consuming drugs or not. She must be presented to a psychiatrist who specialises in mental illnesses to ensure her mental capacities," the radical imam told Ettounsiya TV. For his part, jihadist leader Mohamed Anis Chaieb, who recently declared allegiance to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), told Assabah that the nude photo posting is an illustration that secularists seek to eliminate the Islamic identity of the country. While many Tunisians reacted negatively to the posting, they equally condemned salafist threats of violence. Maysem Abidi argued that freedom is a form of "intellectual transcendence rather than physical nakedness". Young salafist Jamel Omrani described Amina's act as "a shame on a Moslems country" and said that the girl "does not represent Moslems Tunisian women". For his part, media engineer Mohamed Ammar told Magharebia that the salafist response was typical. "They do not frankly accept any opinion contrary to their beliefs," the 32-year-old said. "We all reacted negatively to the posting of the pictures of the two girls, but we discussed this with them using arguments and reason, not by cursing or stoning them. We didn't hack their personal pages either." "Whatever reason they use for piracy or silencing the other, it is unacceptable," said Thouraya Bin Mubarak, a 28 year old employee. "The door of dialogue between all sides and all parties must be opened regardless of their ideological orientation." Instead of hacking pages and issuing death threats, she argued, Islamists should have created their own page "devoted to the Islamic ethics of Moslem women who aspire to liberty, like all other women in the world". |

The Hai'a has some explaining to do |
2012-07-11 |
![]() This accident was extensively covered in the local media and, in less than a day, users on social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook were discussing it. The news was also widely circulated by international news agencies. Meanwhile, ...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings... the official front man of the Hai'a in Al-Baha region, Nasser Al-Zahrani, refused to comment to Okaz news hounds. As the official front man of the Hai'a, why wasn't Al-Zahrani at the scene of the accident? He should have participated in the rescue operation or at least been present at the location to get a clear understanding of what had happened and attempted to explain to the press who was responsible and what actions would be taken. Yet, for whatever reason or direction he received, he turned his cell phone off, giving the impression that the Hai'a was not responsible in any way for the accident and that those killed and injured were the guilty ones. The victim becomes the accused. This is a classical tactic used by the Hai'a to evade responsibility. This time, it did not work as there are eyewitnesses, some of them coppers, who will assist authorities in their investigation. And this time, the Hai'a cannot escape responsibility. What happened is not an isolated event; due to similar events in the past, Hai'a members were banned from taking part in car chases. I do not want to describe how this accident - which resulted in the death of a man and hospitalization of his pregnant wife and two children - happened. I simply demand that the commission explain what happened and a thorough investigation of the accident take place. |
