Kidnapped Chinese engineer escapes Pakistani Taliban
2008-10-18
A Chinese engineer taken hostage in Pakistan seven weeks ago escaped from his Taliban abductors and found his way to an army post, the military said Friday. The Taliban said one of two Chinese hostages they were holding had gone missing, while the other had been severely injured in the escape bid.
"How severely injured?"
"We chopped his head off."

The men had gone missing, along with their local driver and a security guard, on August 29 in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border, where officials said they had been checking an installation.

Pakistan has been under severe pressure from the Chinese government, long one of its most imporant allies and strategic counterweight to arch-rival India, over the hostages, with Beijing publicly requesting that Islamabad rescue them. "One Chinese engineer has been recovered," Pakisani Army spokesman Colonel Nadeem Ahmad said, without giving further details.

Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told AFP the second hostage was injured before he was re-captured. "Last night an incident happened after which one Chinese engineer was hurt and the other went missing," Khan said.

A separate Taliban source said the hostages were being moved from one location to another when they made an escape attempt. He said that the re-captured man had severely injured his leg falling down a steep mountain slope. "They were near the town of Matta in the Swat Valley when they made a run for it," he said.

Pakistani Army officials who declined to be identified by name said the man who escaped had come into contact with local anti-Taliban tribesmen who then guided him to a nearby army post.

The Taliban have demanded that the government release 122 fighters captured in the area during the ongoing military operation.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari completed a four-day state visit to China on Friday, though it was unclear if the fate of the hostages was discussed.

The local driver and security man were released soon after they were kidnapped. Islamic militants have been known in the past to target Chinese workers in Pakistan. China is one of Islamabad's closest allies as well as its largest arms supplier.

Those killed have been identified as Ali Akbar, Shahzad and Khan Agha, alias Kabalay.

In-charge of the media centre in Mingora, Colonel Nadeem, said no security personnel were hurt in the incident.

The security forces claim to have taken control of the strategic Sambat Mountain, which was previously held by the Taliban.

The clash took place in the Sambat area of Kabal tehsil, Taliban sources confirmed to Daily Times, while adding that two Taliban were killed. Locals said dead bodies of the two Taliban killed, Ali Akbar and Khan Agha, were brought to the Shaur area of Matta tehsil for burial.

Policemen: In another incident, Taliban attacked a police party from Shangla in the Charbagh area of the valley injuring seven policemen. The party was on its way from Alpuri police station to Swat for June 26 by-polls duty.

Taliban have accepted the responsibility for the two attacks and said it was in reaction to the killing of their men by security forces in Sambat.

Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told Daily Times that the May 21 agreement with the provincial government was still intact, adding that the government contacted the Taliban after the Tuesday’s clash to look into the matter. The NWFP government inked a 15-point peace accord with Swat-based militants on May 22. Brother of Fazlullah's spokesman killed
2008-01-15
Unidentified gunmen killed the brother of rebel cleric Mullah Fazlullah’s spokesman Sirajuddin in Imam Dheri late on Sunday night, sources said. Bakht Bedar Khan’s body was found in the morning. Residents said Khan was a leader of the Awami National Party (ANP). Ghafoor, another brother of the deceased, told Daily Times that he was in Peshawar when his family told him via telephone that “military officials” had arrested Khan.

Ghafoor said his family had told him eight men wearing military uniform barged into their house, locked them up in a room, and took Khan away. The family thought security officials had held him for “routine investigation”, Ghafoor said. “I contacted the Circuit House in Swat but military officials said they did not conduct any such operation,” he said. “Police in Kanjoo also said they had not arrested him.”

His body was found near the house in the morning, he said. Local residents said Khan supported the government’s peace initiative and distanced himself from Sirajuddin’s activities. “I think his killing is a message for all those who oppose the Taliban, [they will not be spared] even if they are relatives of Taliban commanders,” said a local resident.

Protest: Around 800 people from various villages staged a protest demonstration, carrying Khan’s body at Kanjoo Chowk. They blocked the road for more than two hours. Addressing the protestors, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and ANP candidates for the provincial assembly, Feroz Shah and Dr Shamsher Ali, condemned the killing and demanded the killers’ arrest. They said the government was seeking cooperation from the local people, but could not provide them security. The protestors dispersed after elders held talks with military officials at the Saidu Sharif Airport. Khan was later buried in Imam Dheri.

Talking to Daily Times, Mingora Media Information Centre in-charge Colonel Nadeem said the incident was regretful. He said the military would enhance patrol and increase the number of checkposts in the area.

Three children were injured in security forces’ artillery fire on suspected Taliban hideouts in the Dewlai and Totano Bandai areas in Swat on Monday. Officials did not confirm the civilian casualties. Sources said the shelling followed intelligence reports that important militant commanders were holding a secret meeting at a house. Locals said six houses were partially damaged and three children were injured. There were no reports of militant casualties when this report was filed.
