Trump to visit France, Ireland, Argentina, Colombia
2018-09-01
[AP] President Donald Trump will visit France, Ireland, Argentina and Colombia later this year.

The White House said Friday that Trump will travel to Paris for a Nov. 11 event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of World War I. Trump will also visit Ireland "to renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations."

Trump will attend the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, later in November. He will also visit Colombia to discuss "security, counter narcotics, and regional affairs."

The White House says Trump has asked Vice President Mike Pence to travel to Singapore in November for the United States-Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and the East Asia Summit. He will then go to Papua New Guinea to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.

Confusion still reigns over Trump-Putin meet in Vietnam
2017-11-11
[DAWN] Russia and the United States gave mixed messages on Friday about whether their leaders will meet on the sidelines of a regional summit in Vietnam, with the White House ruling out an encounter but the Kremlin saying it could still happen.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have plummeted as a US probe has accused Trump's former campaign aides of secretly meeting Kremlin-connected officials ‐ a charge Moscow denies.

Both leaders are attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in the city of Danang and there have been conflicting indications in recent days on whether a face-to-face was on the cards.

The issue appeared to be finally settled shortly before Trump's touchdown in Danang on Friday afternoon when press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders briefed news hounds on board Air Force One that there was not enough time for the pair to meet.

"There was never a meeting confirmed, and there will not be one that takes place due to scheduling conflicts on both sides," she said.

But Putin's team said a tete-a-tete could still take place.

"There is contradictory information coming from our American colleagues," Putin's front man Dmitry Peskov told news hounds after Sanders' comments. "In any case, a meeting will take place on the sidelines."

Obama to skip Apec summit
2012-05-15
[Bangla Daily Star] US President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
will not attend the Apec summit in Vladivostok in September, which comes soon after the Democratic presidential nominating convention, the White House said yesterday.

The announcement by White House front man Jay Carney came days after Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile...
said he would skip this week's G8 summit at the US president's retreat at Camp David, as he finalizes his cabinet.

Carney delivered the news to the press pool traveling with Obama in New York.

Obama had not been expected to travel to Russia for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, as it takes place soon after the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, during the week of September 3.

USA is a Pacific nation, says Obama
2009-11-13
US President Barack Obama, starting an Asia tour in Tokyo today, stressed his country's commitment to its long-term ally Japan and said that the United States is a Pacific Rim nation.

"The alliance between the United States and Japan is a foundation for security and prosperity, not just for our two countries, but for the Asian-Pacific region," said Mr Obama in a Tokyo press conference.

After meeting centre-left Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who took power two months ago, Mr Obama said "our alliance will endure and our efforts will be focused on revitalising that friendship so that it's even stronger and more successful in meeting the challenges of the 21st century".

Mr Obama, who at the weekend meets leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum before travelling to China and South Korea, stressed that the United States sees itself as part of the region.

"Throughout my trip and throughout my presidency I intend to make clear that the United States is a Pacific nation and we will be deepening our engagement in this part of the world," he said.
Be afraid, be very afraid ...
"The United States will strengthen our alliances, build new partnerships and we will be part of multilateral efforts and regional institutions that advance regional security and prosperity."

Mr Obama said he and Hatoyama had agreed to work together toward a nuclear-weapons-free world.

Asked whether he would want to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the cities bombed by the United States in World War II, he said: "I certainly would be honoured, it would be meaningful for me to visit those two cities in the future.

"I don't have immediate travel plans, but it's something that would be meaningful to me."
How about visiting the Arizona memorial?

Indonesia proposes Muslim-led intervention force for chaotic Iraq
2006-12-09
Indonesia says a military force from predominantly Muslim countries should be deployed in Iraq before the United States withdraws. The recommendation is part of a larger proposal to resolve the conflict in the war-torn country. Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said like-minded moderate Islamic countries acceptable to the Iraqis should contribute to the "intervening force", whose deployment should not be seen as an extension of the U.S.-led coalition troops or Iraqi security forces. "This force would not be perceived as enemies by the Iraqis because we're going in there as brothers who are there to help," he said in an interview here Wednesday.

The force's capacity should not be measured by its firepower, he added.
One certainly never measures a UN-sponsored force that way.
Hassan was elaborating on the Indonesian proposal for a political framework to solve the Iraq problem, a concept which first became public during the visit of U.S. President George W. Bush to Bogor last month. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono referred to it at the joint press conference with Bush afterwards as the "triple track" proposal. The other two "tracks" are a national reconciliation forum that must ultimately lead to an international conference, and a massive economic rehabilitation and reconstruction program.

The proposal took many people here by surprise, since there had been no prior public discussion about Indonesia getting involved in the conflict. Some politicians and foreign policy experts question whether Indonesia is capable of tackling this very complicated war, and others fear the move would shift the burden of Iraq from Washington to Indonesia. Hassan defended the proposal as Indonesia's contribution to the search for a solution that would restore Iraq's sovereignty, peace and stability. "We're friends to the Iraqis, and we're a friend of the United States too, and of all the parties directly involved in the conflict," he said. "There has to be something that we can contribute."

When asked who had come up with the idea and developed it, he replied: "The president and the foreign minister together".

The concept was first broached when Hassan met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meeting in Hanoi in November. The two were then preparing the agenda for the Bush-Yudhoyono talks in Bogor. "We ended up spending the entire 45 minutes going over the concept," he said. "Rice then suggested that this matter be brought to the attention of the leaders when they met in Bogor." The Indonesian proposal was discussed during a Bogor meeting involving the presidents and foreign ministers.

The Indonesian public would be brought up to speed in due course, he said, adding that currently Indonesia is pursuing the matter through quiet diplomacy, approaching relevant countries one at a time. "Diplomacy has its limitations. You can't disclose everything to the public until after you talk to everyone concerned."

The minister said the international response to the Indonesian proposal so far has been encouraging. "It's better than expected," Hassan said.

Ex-Thai Leader says Australia ignorant
2006-11-13
A FORMER Thai prime minister has accused Australian politicians of being ignorant and uninformed about Asia, just days before the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting starts in Vietnam. Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) chairman Anand Panyarachun said western politicians, including those from Australia and New Zealand, had failed to understand the country's recent military takeover in a bloodless coup on September 19. "You say that Australia is an Asian nation and it should be well aware of what's going on in other Asian countries," Anand said. "But this (coup) is a case in point - you're not Asians yet, you have an entirely different mentality - you belong to the Western group."

His comments echo similar views held by Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad who earlier dismissed Australia's efforts to move closer towards Asia in the 1990s. Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, both preparing to visit the region ahead of the APEC meeting in Hanoi this week, have criticised the Thai military's takeover in which Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was overthrown. Thaksin had been accused of muzzling the media, abuse of power and corruption as well as human rights abuses in suppressing a Muslim insurgency in Southern Thailand and the deaths of more than 2,000 people during a drugs crackdown in 2003.

Asia-Pacific Leaders Vow to Dismantle Terror Groups
2005-11-20
Asia-Pacific leaders vowed yesterday to dismantle the “terrorist” groups that have carried out a series of deadly attacks in the region. “We condemned terrorist acts in the region that took thousands of lives and aimed to destabilise economic prosperity and security in the Asia-Pacific region,” the 21 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders said. Terror attacks “constitute a clear challenge,” the leaders said in a statement released at the end of their two-day annual summit in the South Korean city of Busan. “To confront these ongoing threats, we reaffirmed our commitment... to review progress on our efforts to dismantle trans-boundary terrorist groups, eliminate the threat of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery,” the leaders said.

US President George W. Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao agreed to the statement that also stressed that any new counter-terrorism measures must comply with laws on human rights. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the prime minister of largely Muslim Malaysia, said the leaders spent time discussing terrorism and how it should not be linked to the Islamic faith. The root causes of terrorism must be addressed, but anti-terrorism measures that target the Muslim community as a whole would be counter-productive, he told a news conference.

Asia-Pacific Region to Stage Mock Bird Flu Outbreak
2005-11-01
Countries across the Asia-Pacific region coping with an outbreak of bird flu plan to stage a mock disease outbreak next year to gauge how well they would respond to a pandemic or other major health threat, an Australian official said Tuesday.

The exercise is expected in the first half of next year and will try to identify major weaknesses in preparedness and coordination, Doug Chester, Australia's ambassador to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, said at the end of a two-day meeting of disaster coordination experts. He did not give any details on the plan, but indicated it would focus more on strategy than field exercises.

Chester, who chaired the meeting in the eastern city of Brisbane, said planning for pandemic preparedness should not incite public panic about the potential for the bird flu virus to mutate and unleash a deadly global flu epidemic among humans.

"There is an element of scare-mongering that is undermining effective planning in some economies, and it's causing unnecessary economic damage to some economies," Chester said.

State Department confirms Chinese cyber attacks
2005-09-08
From East-Asia-Intel, subscription req'd.
The State Department acknowledged last week that China is a source of many computer attacks.
Insert "Master of the Obvious" picture here.
“Threats to our computer systems can arise from many sources and are difficult to identify,” the department said in a statement. “We defend against attempted attacks into our systems from sources in China and many other countries.”
The department seeks to cooperate with international meetings in Asia to deal with cyber security, such as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) and “China is a member of APEC and takes part in the cyber security dialogue in that venue.”
Fox: meet chicken coop. The Chicoms are known around the world for the promises they keep.
The department statement would not say if China succeed in penetrating computers during a China-origin computer hacking effort known as Titan Rain.
We can say no more.™
“We remain vigilant through our anti-virus and firewall protection to thwart attacks such as these,” the statement said. “So far this calendar year, the Department of State has blocked from its systems about 3.8 million viruses and 13 million spam attacks.”
The spam attacks were by and large from Nigeria.

North Korean refugees leave Canadian embassy in Beijing
2004-12-23
All 44 North Koreans who forced their way into Canada's embassy in China have left for an undisclosed third country, officials said after weeks of diplomacy between Ottawa and Beijing. The asylum seekers had been holed up inside the embassy since late September, as negotiations took place on their fate. China, which did not consider the North Koreans as refugees, at first demanded they be handed over to its authorities. Canada declined to do so. Sebastien Theberge, spokesman for Canadian Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew told AFP that the refugees had all now left for a third country, though he would not disclose where.
"Canada can say no more, eh?"
The resolution was the result of talks between Pettigrew and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, including on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Chile last month, he said. In a statement, Pettigrew paid tribute to "heroic efforts" by embassy staff in managing the crisis. "I would also like to thank the Chinese government for working with us to resolve this issue in a way that is consistent with our international obligations and in keeping with our humanitarian concerns," Pettigrew said.

Margaret Hassan's body may have been found
2004-11-18
The British embassy in Baghdad says the body of a Western woman has been found in Falluja but says it cannot confirm whether it was that of kidnapped aid worker Margaret Hassan. "We are urgently seeking clarification of the identity of the body," the official said. Hassan, 59, was kidnapped on October 19 as she was being driven to work in Baghdad, where she worked as director of the Australian operation of aid organisation Care International. It has never been clear who seized Hassan or where she was held. A video released to Arabic news channel Al Jazeera last week showed a hooded figure shooting a blindfolded woman in the head. Hassan's family, who said on Tuesday she was probably dead, have appealed to the kidnappers to reveal the location of her body.

The Times reported on its website (www.timesonline.co.uk) on Thursday that a mutilated corpse of a Western woman found by U.S. marines in Falluja was being DNA tested to see if it was the remains of Hassan. The Times reported that the disembowelled body, with its hands and lower legs cut off, had been found in west Falluja on Sunday. It said a female marine who photographed the body said her unit was "80 percent" convinced it was Hassan. Australian Prime Minister John Howard retracted his statement that the body found appeared to be that of Hassan. "The body has not been returned by those who killed her," Howard told reporters when questioned further on the issue before leaving for Chile and a meeting of leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. Earlier in the day Howard had told parliament that a body found in Falluja by the U.S. military on Sunday appeared "to have been Margaret's".

Hambali denies plotting APEC attack
2003-08-22
Hambali, the captured leader of Al Qaeda’s southeast Asian operations, has denied reports he planned to bomb a 21-nation summit in Bangkok to be attended by US President George W Bush, The Australian newspaper reported Thursday.
"Nope. Nope. Wudn't me."
The paper, quoting an Asian intelligence officer who has questioned Hambali since his capture in Thailand last week, said the militant was plotting instead to bomb foreign embassies and other targets in Bangkok.
Oh. Well. That's different.
Thai officials earlier said Hambali had been planning an attack on the October summit meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation group, APEC. And US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said at the weekend that there were still concerns Hambali’s group could target the summit. But the officer quoted by The Australian said Hambali denied this.
