[Rudaw] Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced on Thursday that they had located and disrupted an Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... (ISIS) fuel supply network in western Anbar province. "In a qualitative security operation, the Anbar Operations Command in the Popular Mobilization Forces located fuel supply outlets for the terrorist ISIS in the western Anbar desert," read a statement from the PMF. The discovery was made through a targeted operation relying on intelligence gathering and field monitoring, and led to the disruption of key supply lines used by ISIS to move and carry out attacks, said Qasim Muslih, commander of Anbar operations, according to the statement. The Iraqi forces seized 15,000 liters of fuel, along with pumps, tanks, and barrels, and located a fuel station used by ISIS in the al-Ka'ara area, deep in the western desert. Muslih said the operation marked an important step in weakening ISIS and that intelligence and field efforts will continue to pursue the remaining ISIS turbans and cut off their sources of support. Iraqi security forces have largely eradicated ISIS from the country, with only a few hundred turbans believed to be operating in isolated regions, the head of the military’s Security Media Cell told Rudaw in February. Anbar’s desert regions along the border with Syria is one of the hotspots of jihadist activity. ISIS seized control of swathes of territory in 2014, declaring a so-called caliphate in vast stretches of northern and central Iraq as well as across the border in Syria. The jihadists’ rule in Iraq was brought to an end in 2017 when Iraqi and Kurdish fighters, supported by a United States-led international coalition, clawed back territory. Iraq’s air force "carried out a successful ![]() KABOOM!... using F-16 aircraft, which resulted in the killing of two ISIS terrorist gang members according to initial information. The strike was followed by successive explosions inside the hideout from the destruction of weapons, ammunition, equipment, and logistical materials inside," the army’s Security Media Cell said in a statement. The army said that the Anbar strike was their "own way" of congratulating the Iraqi people on the upcoming Moslem Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. "This congratulations consisted of continuing to pursue and kill the remaining ISIS terrorist gang members," it said. Iraq carries out frequent airstrikes on suspected ISIS hideouts to pursue remnants of the group, particularly within areas of Diyala, Salahaddin, Kirkuk, ... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time... and Nineveh provinces that are disputed between Erbil and Baghdad and a security vacuum exists, as well as in the Anbar desert that borders Syria. Iraqi forces and the Kurdish Peshmerga are coordinating to combat the group in the disputed areas. Two weeks ago, another airstrike in Anbar province killed Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, ISIS’s second-in-command globally and its top man in Iraq and Syria. In late February, the head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell told Rudaw that Iraqi security forces have largely eradicated ISIS from the country, with only a few hundred snuffies remaining in remote areas. The group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017, three years after it seized control of swathes of territory in the north and centre of the country. |

[Rudaw] The wife of the Islamic State![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... ’s (ISIS) second-in-command was captured in the same operation that killed her husband, the United States military said on Saturday. "U.S. Central Command commends Iraqi Intelligence and Security forces on the successful operation leading to the capture and arrest of Chechen ISIS terrorist Umm Hussein, the wife of ISIS leader Abu Khadija, who was killed in a strike on March 13," read a statement from CENTCOM, the US military command in the Middle East. Abu Khadija, whose full name is Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, was killed in an operation in Anbar province carried out by Iraqi and American forces with Kurdish assistance. CENTCOM said that two other ISIS members were captured in the operation and called it a testament to Iraq’s commitment to dismantling ISIS networks. "CENTCOM, with our partners and allies, remain steadfast in our efforts to eliminate ISIS and prevent its resurgence," the statement said. Rafiei was killed "after several years of investigation and relying on information from the Kurdistan Region Security Council, in coordination with the coalition and later with Iraqi federal forces," the Kurdistan Region Security Council said on Friday. Rafiei was a target for more than two years "and in the past six months, the noose has tightened around this terrorist," the Iraqi military’s Joint Operations Command said in a statement. Intelligence about him was gathered during operations in the Anbar desert, raids of ISIS hideouts across the country, and from a person close to Rafiei who was captured by the Kurdistan Region Security Council and handed over to Iraqi forces. His location was determined and he was killed at 6:30 Friday evening in a "successful airstrike in the Anbar desert," the Joint Operations Command said. Video released by CENTCOM shows the moment of the airstrike on a moving vehicle. Iraqi and American forces moved into the site of the airstrike and found the bodies of Rafiei and a second ISIS member, both wearing unwent kaboom!boom jackets and in possession of weapons, according to CENTCOM. Iraqi forces said they also arrested seven ISIS suspects, including two women, accused of providing Rafiei with supplies. He did not reveal where or when the operation took place. Sudani said that Rafiei also held other positions within the extremist group and was "one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world." The United States in 2023 named Rafiei a Specially Designated Global Terrorist as an ISIS leader. Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein issued a stark warning on Sunday about the growing threat posed by ISIS, saying it poses an increasing danger to Iraq, Jordan, and Syria. Kurdish security council slams Sudani for omitting credit in anti-ISIS op [Rudaw] The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) said on Friday that it played a key role in killing senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abdullah Makki Muslih al-Rafiei, and slammed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani for failing to credit them. Rafiei was killed "after several years of investigation and relying on information from the Kurdistan Region Security Council, in coordination with the coalition and later with Iraqi federal forces," the KRSC said. Sudani had announced earlier in the day that Iraqi intelligence, with the support of the United States-led global coalition against ISIS, carried out an operation targeting Rafiei, aka Abu Khadija. He did not reveal where and when the operation took place. The KRSC criticized Sudani for failing to credit the Kurdish forces. "This oversight is not a good indication for the future of cooperation between the regional and federal institutions," the KRSC warned. "The institutions affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Security Council have played an influential role in confronting the threat of terrorists in this region and will continue to effectively perform this duty. It would be better for the federal government to create a more favorable environment for cooperation and coordination for the sake of maintaining peace and stability throughout Iraq," it added. Hours later, the Iraqi Special Operations Forces published the details of the operation, stating that it took place in Anbar province on Thursday. It also acknowledged the role of the KRSC in the operation. Erbil and Baghdad have coordinated in many anti-ISIS operations in the past.

It will take more than words to stop Houthis |
2024-12-25 |
[Jpost] Whatever path forward is chosen, the Houthis will need to suffer more serious blows because, currently, they feel emboldened. The Iranian-backed Houthis launched another ballistic missile at Israel early on Tuesday, marking the fourth such attack in two weeks – the others coming on Saturday, Thursday, and last Monday. The Houthis are increasing their attacks and showing they are not deterred by Israel’s strikes or rhetoric. Defense Minister Israel Katz visited the Arrow air defense battery that intercepted the missile. He said, “We will not accept the fact that the Houthis continue to fire at the State of Israel. We will deal with the heads of the Houthis in Sana’a and everywhere in Yemen.” Katz made similar comments on Monday when he vowed that Israel would severely weaken the Houthis. He compared Israel’s actions on this front with the way Israel had fought Hamas and Hezbollah. He noted that Israel had eliminated Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Katz was clear on his vow regarding the road ahead. “We defeated Hamas, we defeated Hezbollah, we blinded the defense systems in Iran and damaged their production systems, we toppled the Assad regime in Syria, we severely wounded the axis of evil, and we will also severely strike the Houthi terrorist organization in Yemen who are the last ones standing." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also vowed to increase retaliation against the Houthis. He said Israel would act with force, determination, and sophistication, in comments on Sunday. HOUTHIS REMAIN UNDETERRED The Houthis have not been deterred by these words. Not only are they not deterred, but the more Israeli officials make bold statements, the more the Houthis will launch missiles to show it has no effect on them. The Houthis understand the strategic and tactical picture. They have been attacking ships for a year and received only a very modest response from the US naval forces, which have been deployed as part of an operation designed to protect shipping. It’s important to understand that what the Houthis are doing is relatively new in the region. They are not a state seeking to blockade a waterway but are a terrorist group acting as if they are a state. They have succeeded in cutting down the ability of many firms to ship via the Red Sea. They have also continued attacking Israel with relative impunity. Israel has carried out three rounds of airstrikes against the Houthis, one in the summer, one in the fall, and one recently in December. However, the strikes have not deterred the Houthis. This is because they steeled themselves in war against Saudi Arabia for years after Riyadh intervened in Yemen in 2015. Saudi Arabia had many of the latest warplanes and technology thanks to close ties with the US, yet Riyadh could not defeat the Houthis. The Houthis have dug in on the high ground of the mountains of Yemen. They have had Iranian backing and advice for years about constructing tunnels to hide missiles and how to deploy rockets quickly. The Houthis have developed a more sophisticated missile and drone program than Hamas and Hezbollah. Hamas hides underneath civilians to launch rockets and attacks, but it has to exist in a relatively small area of Gaza. Hezbollah carpeted southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley with weapons and missiles, but it was not able to hide its long-range missiles and is so close to Israel that it’s easily within striking distance for the IDF. The Houthis are 2,000 km. away from Israel, requiring complex planning to strike them. There is another fact in this war, which is not one that most of those making statements want to acknowledge. Precision airstrikes usually do not win wars. Precision firepower on warplanes is not a magic wand, and it often deceives militaries into thinking they can accomplish things that cannot be achieved solely with warplanes. This is most clear from the failure of the US-led coalition against Saddam Hussein to stop the Scud attacks on Israel during the Gulf War. That was called the “great Scud hunt,” and it wasn’t so great, nor did it achieve the intended results. Saddam’s regime was deploying Scuds in the Anbar province, specifically in the desert, making it hard for the US and its allies to find them. The Houthis are rolling missiles out of tunnels in the mountains, and it is incredibly difficult to preempt or predict. Finding the stockpiles and eliminating the Houthi leadership may be even harder. This does not mean it is impossible to defeat the Houthis. However, Israel would do well to be careful about learning the wrong lessons from Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Israel’s war in Gaza has gone on for a year and two months, and Hamas is not yet defeated. Hamas controls most of Gaza, holds 100 hostages, and continues to dictate terms in the hostage talks. Even in northern Gaza, where the IDF’s 162nd Division has been unleashed for two months to hunt down terrorists in Jabalya, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanun, the terror threat continues. On Monday, the IDF said three soldiers were killed by an explosion in Beit Hanun. There are still terrorists in Beit Hanun – near the border with Israel – despite a year of operations. LESSONS FROM OTHER FRONTS MAY NOT BE APPLICABLE IN YEMEN In Lebanon, Hezbollah has been weakened, but it still exists. It may have lost leaders and weapons, but it would be foolish to think it has vanished. Is Hezbollah weaker today than in 2006? It may regrow itself. Similarly, Israeli officials have taken credit for the fall of Bashar al-Assad, but the reality is that Assad fell because of his own hollow regime and the ability of the opposition to mobilize and take advantage of the weakening of Hezbollah. Lastly, the lessons of Israel’s strikes on Iran are not yet clear. |

"Starting today, measures have been taken to return Syrian soldiers to their country," Sa’d Mohammadi, head of the security committee of the Anbar provincial council, told Rudaw’s Hastyar Qadir on Wednesday, adding that the repatriations will begin on Thursday. Iraq rejects asylum for Syria ex-regime soldiers, Maher al-Assad |
2024-12-16 |
[NEWARAB] Iraqi officials have said that the country has no intention of granting asylum to thousands of Syrian soldiers who entered its territory shortly before the collapse of Bashir al-Assad's regime. Estimates suggest that around 3,000 former Syrian army personnel, including both soldiers and officers, are currently under Iraqi custody or supervision mainly in the western Anbar province.![]() Speaking on condition of anonymity to The New Arab's Arabic language edition, al-Araby al-Jadeed, Iraqi sources said the soldiers, who fled as the Assad government was on the brink of collapse, will not be permitted to remain in Iraq as refugees. "They will remain hosted by Iraq in the coming period until their situation is resolved and their safe return is guaranteed," one source said. "Iraq is committed to ensuring their well-being while they remain on its territory and once they are sent back across the border." Iraq announced last Saturday that it had received hundreds of Syrian troops who had abandoned their positions as battles intensified, initially planning to return them to Damascus by air. However, a hangover is the wrath of grapes... there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened... the swift downfall of the Assad regime forced the Iraqi government to put repatriation plans on hold. Sagvan Sindi, the deputy head of the Security and Defence Committee in the Iraqi parliament, told The New Arab that the government was deliberating on how best to handle the Syrian soldiers' presence. "The issue is related to the Iraqi government on how it would deal with the Syrian soldiers," Sindi said. TNA sent inquiries to the International Committee of the Red Thingy regarding whether the Syrian soldiers could be considered prisoners of war, but had not received a response at the time of publication. Turki Mohammed, the mayor of al-Qa'im in western Anbar, where many of the soldiers are currently being held, said Iraqi authorities facilitated the Syrian troops' entry once they had surrendered their weapons at the border. "Iraq received nearly 3,000 former Syrian army combatants, including soldiers and officers, over the past few days," he told al-Araby al-Jadeed. |
