Nisar stands his ground over ‘banned groups’ controversy
2017-01-15
Astounding, even for Pakistain.
[DAWN] Defending remarks he made in the Senate earlier this week, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
reiterated on Saturday that he believed there should be separate laws for organizations that are proscribed on the basis of terrorist links and those banned on a sectarian basis.

The minister had caused uproar in the upper house on Tuesday when he tried to distinguish between the two different types of banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
s.

"On one side are clear-cut terrorist organizations; there is no space for them in Pakistain. Their office-bearers or anyone linked to them are either eliminated in encounters, imprisoned or manage to flee across the border. But organizations that are proscribed on sectarian grounds, whose office-bearers have no cases against them, they are still in Pakistain," the minister told news hounds after a public meeting in Kallar Syedan.

"It is unfair to link everything to Maulana Ludhiyanvi," he said, referring to criticism of his meeting with the head of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ).

"Those suggesting that I uttered something sacrilegious by saying terrorist organizations and those organizations that were proscribed on the basis of sectarian differences are different have not examined the record," he said, referring to the list of proscribed organizations compiled by the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta).

"Can Allama Sajid Naqvi be linked to any terrorist organization? Can [Syed Hamid Ali Shah] Moosavi be linked to a terrorist organization? No, they are patriotic Paks. But their organizations have been proscribed on a sectarian basis."

"We will need to make separate laws for these two types of organizations. This is necessary to remove confusions regarding who-is-meeting-whom. I ask which Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) leader hasn’t met leaders of proscribed organizations in his time?"

When asked about the disappearance of five civil society activists in the past week, he said efforts were being made to recover the missing men and ensure their return to their families.

He said that in Islamabad, a missing persons report had been filed only over Prof Salman Haider’s disappearance, while the other FIRs were filed in Lahore. He said that incidents of disappearances took time to be resolved, adding that he was personally monitoring the issue.

Talking about the military courts, he said that a fast-track mechanism was needed to ensure that condemned hard boyz should meet their deserved end. He said the fate of the military courts would become clear in a few days.

While commenting on the Quetta commission, he said that that matter would be taken up by the apex court on Jan 19, and a report would be submitted there on Jan 18. He said that a detailed report on the achievements of the interior ministry during his stint of ministry would be submitted.

Plea against cleric's acquittal in Azam Tariq case dismissed
2015-03-19
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday rejected an appeal against the Shia Ulema Council leader Allama Sajid Naqvi's acquittal from the charges of abetment in the murder of outlawed Sipah-e-Sahaba chief Maulana Azam Tariq.

A division bench, comprising Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi and Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, upheld the November 27, 2004, decision of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) exonerating Allama Naqvi along with Amanullah Seyyal.

Alim Tariq, a brother of Maulana Azam Tariq, had filed the appeal through his counsel Basharatullah Khan against the two Shia leaders' acquittal in the murder case.

Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi, the counsel for Allama Naqvi, argued before the court that no charge against his client was proved before the ATC, which led to his acquittal.

Alim Tariq had filed another appeal against the acquittal of two other persons - Mudassar Ali and Mohammad Ali - who were tried in the ATC for their alleged involvement in the murder of Azam Tariq.

Basharatullah Khan argued before the IHC that the two accused were tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
on February 19, 2007. He said the witnesses identified the accused in an identification parade but the ATC acquitted them. The IHC bench admitted the appeal and issued notices to the two accused and adjourned the hearing to a date to be fixed by the court office. Azam Tariq was murdered in the limits of the Golra police in Islamabad on October 6, 2003.

(JI) and JUI-S (Sami-ul-Haq group), DawnNews reported.

Speaking during a presser, the JUI-F chief said the national security is facing dire threats and it was call of the hour to revive the coalition of religious parties in the country. "Even ideological values of the nation are being tried to be replaced," said Fazl.

Commenting on exclusion of the JI from the alliance, Rehman said, "They (JI) will be invited in the next meeting."

Fazlur Rehman said he had always opposed all military operations whether in Pakistain or in Afghanistan, adding that he neither belongs to Taliban nor to the government.

Owais Noorani, Qari Zawar Bahadur, Mufti Abrar, Sahibzada Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair, Professor Sajid Mir, Allama Sajid Naqvi and other prominent religious leaders belonging to different religious groups of the country also accompanied the JUI-F chief during the presser.

There has been growing concerns among workers of religio-political parties for the last six months or so as the JI had attached conditions for joining the MMA.

Meanwhile,

Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami, the founding party of MMA, also brushed aside its chances of joining the alliance.

JUI-S provincial chief Maulana Yousaf Shah said last month that Fazlur Rehman was politically isolated and made the announcement of reviving the MMA to mobilise his party workers.

"JUI-Sami has abandoned MMA and will never become its part," he said.

Shah said his party chief, Maulana Samiul Haq

, who was also the chairman of Defa-e-Pakistain Council (DPC), might form a new electoral alliance before next general elections.

Campaign launched to protect blasphemy law
2010-12-17
[Dawn] A number of political and religious parties and groups announced on Wednesday that a campaign to protect the blasphemy law would be launched and gave a call for countrywide protest demonstrations on Dec 24 and a shutter-down strike on Dec 31. They also resolved to hold a public meeting in Bloody Karachi on Jan 9.

The decision was announced by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
at a news conference on the conclusion of the daylong Tahaffuz-i-Nabuwat Conference which was attended by top leadership of Jamaat-i-Islami, PML-Q and Jamaatud Dawa and representatives of Wafaqul Madaris and many other smaller religious organisations and groups.

Maulana Fazl said that all religious parties were united on the issue. He vowed to resist any move by the government to make changes in the existing blasphemy law.

The issue came to the light when PPP's MNA Sherry Rehman submitted a private member bill to the National Assembly Secretariat last month, seeking some changes in the blasphemy law with an aim to avoid the misuse of the law.

The JUI-F chief, who presided over the conference, said all the mosques in the country would organise protest demonstrations on Dec 24 after Friday prayers. He said a big public meeting and protest demonstration would be held in Bloody Karachi on Jan 9, which would be attended by all central leaders of religious parties.

He said an action plan would also be unveiled at the meeting.

He announced that former MNA Dr Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair had been made chairman of Tehrik-i-Namoos-i-Risalat committee with an aim to organise the movement at grassroots level.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman made an appeal to traders' organisations and associations of small and big markets to extend their support to the movement and make the shutter-down strike a success. He said that their protest would be so forceful that no one would dare to think about changing the blasphemy law.

Earlier, during the conference, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain declared that his party would oppose every move to change the blasphemy law in the Parliament.

JI chief Munawar Hassan said it was wrong to say that the blasphemy law had affected only minorities in the country.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed suggested that the present movement should at the later stage be converted into a movement for the enforcement of Islamic system in the country.

The participants appealed to the media to play an effective role in making the movement a success for the cause of Islam and to show its love for the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

PML-N's MNA from Islamabad Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also attended the conference in which some of the speakers, including Maulana Attaul Momin Shah Bukhari of Majlis Ahrarul Islam lashed out at former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Müslim League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
for keeping a silence on the issue.

Dr Tariq Fazal gave an explanation that Senator Raja Zafarul Haq had been assigned the task to represent the party in the conference but he had to go to his native town after receiving news about the death of a relative.

The conference was also attended by Hafiz Saeed of Jamaatud Dawa, Maulana Abdul Majeed Ludhianvi of Majlis Tahaffuz-i-Khatam Nabuwat, Qari Hanif Jalandhary and Dr Abdul Razzaq Sikandar of Wafaqul Madaris, Hafiz Aakif Saeed of Tanzim Islami, Maulana Abdul Aziz of Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith and Allama Sajid Naqvi.

Mistrust major hurdle in MMA's restoration
2010-07-24
The mistrust among component parties of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) is the biggest hurdle in the way of the restoration of the religio-political alliance.

The two parties -- the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) -- who claim massive support among the religious groups, however, are not ready to trust each other.

In a recent meeting convened to take a decision on the revival of the alliance, the leaders of these parties quoted several incidents of the past and accused each other of defying unanimous decisions taken by the Central Executive Council of the MMA. Six religio-political parties representing various sects of the Muslims of the country had formed the MMA initially.

The Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's oldest religio-political party, claims to be the home of Muslims belonging to all sects, saying they are not representatives of any specific sect. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (Noorani) represents the Barelvi school of Sunnis.

"We are registered as the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) and do not add Noorani or any other name to it," said Qari Zawar Bahadur, the central secretary general of the party. Former National Assembly leader Fazlur Rehman-led JUI-F, and former senator Sameeullah-led Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sameeullah (JUI-S), represent the Deoband school of thought.

Professor Sajid Mir-led Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith represents the Ahle Hadith (Wahabi) school of thought, while Allama Sajid Naqvi-led Pakistan Islami Tehreek represents Shias. About three years ago, the JUI-S quit the alliance over differences on policies, but the party's major contention was with Fazlur Rehman, as he refused to give more share in power to Sameeullah in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the MMA was ruling under Akram Durrani of the JUI-F.

To keep the number of parties at six, the alliance leaders allowed the entry of a new party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Senior (JUI-S).

The party represents the Deoband school of thought in Punjab and is headed by Maulana Abdur Raheem from Chakwal.

The other two, the JUI-F and the JUI-S, have a majority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The formation of this alliance has roots in the peace committees formed by the Punjab government in mid-1990s, when sectarian violence was at its peak.

The Shias and Sunnis and the Deoband school of Muslims were declaring each other Kafir (non-Muslim). The Shias were united under the banner of Sipah-e-Muhammad, while the other two, the Sipah-e-Sahaba and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, under Sunnis.

The groups were always in confrontation with each other and killings were at their peak.

Sindh bans 175 ulema during Moharram
2008-12-20
The Sindh government decided on Friday to keep a ban on the entry of 175 ulemas and orators including nine prominent ones from different cities who are coming to Karachi for Mohrram-ul-Harram.

The decision was taken to avoid sectarian violence and hatred, and to maintain religious harmony in the city. These ulemas and orators will not be allowed to enter the city for the next three months and those who violate orders will be deported from the city.

According to Sindh Home Ministry sources, the decision was made by the Sindh Home Department after getting secret reports given by the Karachi police and intelligence agencies. The orders will be implemented from December 28 till the last week of March 2009.

The most prominent Ulemas are Maulana Ahmed Ludhyanvi, Maulana Ali Sher Haidri and Maulana Masoodur Rehman of Ahle Sunnat, Islami Tehreek Chief and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal Vice President Allama Sajid Naqvi, Punjab's prominent religious figures Maulana Ishaque, Allama Riaz Hussain, Allama Ghazanffar Abbas, Allama Tajddin and Tehreek-e-Nifaz Fiqa Jafferia Leader Allama Maqbool Hussain.

The sources also disclosed that a strict ban was also imposed on distributing hate spreading material, sectarian wall-chalking and arranging any program without getting a No Objection Certificate from the local administration.

According to Ahle Sunnat Spokesman Maulana Abdul Ghafoor, the ban was against the law because the constitution of Pakistan allows each and every citizen to enjoy basic rights.

Foreign hand involved in terrorist acts: Naqvi
2008-12-08
Tehrik Nifaz Fiqah-e-Jafria (TNFJ) chief Allama Sajid Naqvi on Sunday said that Peshawar terrorist incident killing over 35 people was a conspiracy to fan sectarianism in the country.

Talking to media persons here after attending a meeting of ulema belonging to various schools of thought at Madrassa Allama Arif Hussain Al-Hussaini, Naqvi said that foreign hands could be involved in terrorism in different parts of the country calling for joint efforts to thwart this conspiracy.

Suicide bomber strikes Shia gathering in DIK
2008-07-14
A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia gathering in Dera Ismail Khan injuring at least three people, police officials said on Sunday.

The bomber had leapt in front of a car carrying people back from the gathering, in which top Shia leader Allama Sajid Naqvi was also present, said police official Muhammad Qasim Khan.

It appeared that the bomber's explosives had not fully detonated as his body had not been damaged completely, he said.
"Eeeeewww! Gross! Intestines!"
"[Gasp! Groan!]... Excuse me! Would you mind shooing the flies out of my body cavity until I've totally passed on?... [Wince! Whimper!]... As you can see, I no longer have any arms of my own... Really, it won't be long now... I hope... That's a good fellow!"
The attack comes as the latest in a series of violent incidents in Pakistan. The country was rocked by suicide attacks in Islamabad and Karachi last week that had claimed more than 20 lives. On Saturday, a group of militants had attacked a Frontier Constabulary (FC) convoy in the Zargari area of Hangu district, north of Dera Ismail Khan. District Mayor Haji Khan Afzal had said that at least 13 paramilitary forces had died along with at least three militants, making the skirmish one of the deadliest for Pakistan's security forces in recent months. Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik on ruled out a full-fledged military operation in the area in response.

JUI-F may join national government, says Fazl
2008-02-28
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Wednesday that, if invited, his party might join a government of national consensus. “I favour restoration of the judiciary and hope that the next coalition government will fulfil the promises it has made to the people,” Fazl told reporters at the residence of Senator Talha Mehmood. Fazl, who is also the general secretary of the religious alliance, admitted that a rift in the MMA had led to its defeat in the elections. However, he said that the MMA would be revived, adding that two senior leaders, Prof Sajid Mir and Allama Sajid Naqvi, had met with him for this purpose.

Taliban, LJ militants plan attacks in nine cities
2008-01-15
The Interior Ministry has warned law enforcement agencies that activists of the defunct Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) and Taliban militants plan to attack eminent political and religious leaders and religious places in nine cities during Muharram, Daily Times learnt on Monday. “Yes, we have received these threats,” said acting Islamabad police Inspector General Nadeem Baloch.
We used to hear about LJ pretty regularly, and then they kind of subsided. I believe they've mostly been absorbed into the al-Qaeda structure, but because of their liking for mindless sectarian violence they get let off the leash for Muharram.
Two intelligence reports received by the ministry said attacks were likely in Islamabad, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Vehari, Jhang, Hyderabad, Karachi, DI Khan and Quetta. A notification by the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) of the Interior Ministry said militants would try to attack Muharram processions, Imambargahs and Majalis. The intelligence reports say Senator Abid Hussain, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid ex-MNA from Jhang Waqas Akram Sheikh and Allama Sajid Naqvi are likely targets. Three jackets meant for suicide attacks have been delivered to LJ activists in Jhang, they say.
[KNOCK KNOCK!]
"Whose dere?"
"Suicide jacket delivery for Mr. Mahmoud!"
Militants: According to the reports, 300 militants from tribal areas, including local and Afghan Taliban, have been assigned targets and sent to the settled areas. Following the circulation of the notice to the home secretaries and the provincial police chiefs, law enforcement agencies are on high alert. District police officers have been directed to devise security plans to ensure peace during Muharram.

MMA Supreme Council grills Qazi for resigning from NA
2007-07-31
Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Monday offered to step down as president of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) after three members of the MMA Supreme Council, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, criticised him for resigning from the National Assembly (NA), sources told Daily Times. Qazi later agreed to the council’s demand that he withdraw his decision to resign, said the sources. At the start of the council meeting, which Qazi presided over, Allama Sajid Naqvi questioned his resignation from the NA without prior approval of the council. MMA Secretary General Maulana Fazl said Qazi should have consulted him or the council before submitting his resignation, and his unilateral action had embarrassed the alliance of religious parties, according to the sources. Another member of the council, Dr Abu Al Khair Zubair, also criticised Qazi. Qazi reacted by saying he was prepared to step down as president of the MMA immediately if the council members had lost confidence in him. The members of the council said that they did not want his resignation.
