News] Abu Omar Riyad al-Nahdi, a former leader in al-Qaeda and a prominent associate of the head of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else ...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State... (HTS) in Iraq, has officially launched a new political movement called "Current of Change and Liberation" in the city of Seiyun, Hadhramaut Valley, well-informed sources reported. The sources confirmed that al-Nahdi, who defected from the takfiri ![]() organization in 2018, was previously known by "Rafiq al-Shar’a" due to his close ties with Ahmed al-Shar’a (Abu Mohammed al-Julani), the leader of HTS—a ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... -backed faction that later declared itself the governing authority in Syria after Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Scourge of Qusayr... ’s departure from power. The new movement has reportedly gained significant traction in the valley’s districts, coinciding with humanitarian activities carried out by the Ottoman Turkish Red Islamic Thingy (Hilal al-Ahmar al-Turki) in recent years, facilitated by leaders of al-Islah Party (Yemen’s Moslem Brüderbund affiliate). Notably, al-Nahdi previously fought with al-Qaeda in Iraq before announcing his defection and undergoing political training, raising questions about his true objectives, regional affiliations, and activities under a political cover in Hadhramaut’s oil-rich areas. These regions are controlled by factions of the First Military District, which is loyal to Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a leading figure in al-Islah. Observers view the announcement of this movement in Seiyun as a clear message from al-Islah to curb the ambitions of the UAE-backed Southern Translation Council (STC), which has failed since August 2022 to fully control Hadhramaut Valley after declaring "Operation Arrows of the East." Saudi-led forces blocked the STC’s military advances after the factions seized al-Islah’s camps in Shabwa and Abyan ...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirateafter seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues... . This comes at a time when Hadhramaut Governorate is witnessing intense political conflicts between the UAE and Saudi Arabia ![]() , carried out through local proxies such as the STC, the Hadhramaut Tribes Alliance, and al-Jami’, the latter two being headed by tribal sheikh Amr bin Habrish al-Ali, who is aligned with Saudi Arabia. His armed forces took control of the oil fields in July of last year and are now moving to encircle the coastal districts controlled by UAE-backed factions, including al-Rayyan Airport and the al-Dhaba oil terminal, which have been under Emirati control since 2016. |

It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... , informed sources reported on Saturday. The sources confirmed that, during the past two days, the UAE moved about 700 members of the so-called "Hadhrami Elite" militia from the city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadhramaut, after they received training by Emirati and American officers, and deployed them in Seiyun city to secure it. The UAE is working to gradually strengthen these elements during the coming days, in preparation to expel the forces of the "First Military Region" loyal to the military leader of the Islah Party, Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, towards Ma’rib province, in implementation of the demands of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) based on the directives issued by Abu Dhabi, according to the sources. On another hand, eyewitnesses said that they had seen soldiers of the First Military Region in civil cloth leave Seiyun on busses during the past hours. This came after the UAE assigned the leading member in the General People’s Congress Party, chief of the so-called "General Staff" Sagheer bin Aziz, to oversee the process of completing the exit of Islah forces of Evil from the Hadhramaut districts. |

It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... has on Saturday confirmed that "dealing with the humanitarian file is the test and the real indicator of the success of the truce and the transition to positive steps after it."In its meeting, headed by President Mahdi al-Mashat, the Council stressed that "the correct dialogue in the beginning is with the US-Saudi-Emirati aggression coalition, and the humanitarian file and the lifting of the siege take precedence over the military and political aspects." The meeting discussed the current developments on the national arena, in the light of the armistice announced by the United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... At the meeting, the Supreme Political Council stressed the necessity of Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. The Council said it considered this as the way to deal with the rest of the issues, and said that any delay in this will shake confidence in the credibility of the truce. The Supreme Political Council reiterated its firm stance towards honourable peace. The meeting also dealt with the actions taken by the coalition recently in Riyadh under the so-called "consultations" and the accompanying launch of the so-called "leadership council" as an alternative to the nominal rule of the exiled Abdrabbuh Mansuur Hadi and Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar. In this regard, the Council affirmed that "the Yemeni people are not concerned with illegal measures issued by an illegal party outside the country," noting that "what happened in replacing the roles of mercenaries should serve as a lesson to the rest of the mercenaries, as there is no legitimacy granted by the aggression countries." The Supreme Political Council praised the awareness of the Yemeni people, who "became aware of all the conspiracies that the coalition is hatching to undermine their willpower and steadfastness and the great sacrifices they made for the soil of the country." During the meeting, the Council affirmed that it seeks by all means to alleviate the suffering of the citizens caused by the continuation of obstacles to the arrival of fuel ships. It also called for the release of the captives on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan under the rule of releasing all those held by Yemen in exchange for all those held by the coalition. |

U.S. Sends Warning to Iran by Striking Houthis |
2016-10-15 |
Washington, Aden-The latest military developments in Yemen have taken a new path after the U.S. navy hit Houthi radars along the Yemeni coast. Washington asserted on Thursday its readiness to launch new strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen if they keep attacking U.S. ships facing the country’s shores. Through its threat, Washington was also indirectly warning Iran, which provides Yemen’s insurgents with weapons. Speaking during a press conference in Washington, Pentagon spokesperson Peter Cook said the U.S. forces knock out three positions, the U.S. thinks had played a role in launching the missiles against USS Mason on Sunday and Wednesday. “The U.S. will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate,” Cook said. Earlier, the Pentagon had said that the USS Mason ship had launched a number of missiles at three military positions, controlled by Houthis along the Red Sea shores. The Pentagon added that the U.S. missiles, authorized by President Barack Obama, hit radar sites in the city of Mukha in the Taiz province, and in Khoka and Ras Isa in the Hudaydah province. The Pentagon spokesperson said Iran was playing a role in the Yemeni crisis by helping Houthi rebels. In an earlier warning to Tehran, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said that the U.S. Department of Defense would make sure that anybody who interferes with freedom of navigation or anybody who puts US Navy ships at risk “does so at their own peril.” Davis added: “It’s no secret that Iran has been actively supplying them and giving them the tools of war.” Yemeni observers told Asharq Al-Awsat that Iran had provided the rebels with modern missiles capable to hit naval ships in the Yemeni ports. On Thursday, Yemeni vice-president Lieutenant General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar condemned the attack on the U.S. ship in Bab al-Mandab. During a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller, al-Ahmar said: “This terrorist attack reveals the size of the plot that Houthis aim to serve, and which includes threatening neighboring countries and the international community.” He said that threatening international fleets is an unacceptable violation that will be faced by the Arab Coalition. Yemeni observers said that the attack on the U.S. navy aims to push Washington into the ongoing war between Houthis and the National Army, which is supported by the Arab Coalition. The observers said that by shoving the U.S. into the war, Houthis plan to assert their claims that Washington was involved in the Yemeni war. |

Yemen appoints top general in bid to rally tribes |
2016-02-24 |
AFP, AdenTuesday, 23 February 2016 Yemen’s president has appointed a veteran general as armed forces deputy commander in a bid to rally support from tribes and troops in the rebel-held Sanaa region, military sources said. President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi’s decision to appoint Saudi-based General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, a northerner known for his close ties to Sunni Islamists, was published on the government’s official sabanew.net website late Monday. Hadi himself is supreme commander of the armed forces. Ahmar’s troops played a prominent role in the 2011 uprising that ousted strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose loyalists are now allied with Iran-backed Shiite militias who control the capital. In 2013, Hadi named the influential general his military and security affairs adviser after dramatically restructuring the military to curb the influence of those linked to Saleh. Military sources explained Hadi’s decision as an attempt to gain the confidence of tribal dignitaries and senior army commanders in the Sanaa region, where Ahmar wields much influence. His Al-Ahmar clan has historically led the influential Hashid confederation in northern Yemen. Hadi’s move comes as loyalist forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, try to advance on Sanaa which Houthi militias captured in 2014. Earlier this month, pro-government forces took the town of Nihm, within 40 km of Sanaa, after overrunning the headquarters of a renegade pro-rebel army brigade, loyalist military sources said. Coalition forces have meanwhile intensified their air strikes against militia positions around Sanaa over the past week, military sources added. Since the coalition intervened in support of Hadi last March, his loyalists have ousted the militias from five southern provinces. In the north the insurgents have been largely confined to Marib, east of Sanaa, and Jawf on the border with Saudi Arabia. Last Update: Tuesday, 23 February 2016 KSA 13:52 - GMT 10:52 |
