Verdict against ‘Chemical Ali’ due on Sunday
2007-06-24
BAGHDAD - The Iraqi High Tribunal is set to give its verdict on Sunday on six former aides of Saddam Hussein accused of slaughtering 182,000 Kurdish villagers during a 1988 military campaign in northern Iraq.

Ahead of the judgement, the defence team appealed to United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon to stop the trial which it said was marred by ‘errors’.
None so large as the error made to take Chemical Ali alive.
The most prominent defendant is Ali Hassan Al Majid, a cousin of Saddam who is widely known as ‘Chemical Ali’ for allegedly ordering the killing of tens of thousands of Kurdish villagers with chemical gas strikes. He faces a charge of genocide, while the five others in the dock are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, all charges that carry the death penalty.

They include Sabir Al Duri, former director of military intelligence; Sultan Hashim Al Tai, a former defence minister; Hussein Rashid Al Tikriti, former armed forces deputy chief of operations.

Four years on, House of Saddam lies in ruins
2007-04-08
BAGHDAD -- Four years after Saddam Hussein's ouster, Iraq's new judiciary is dismantling piece by piece the remnants of the dictator's ruthless regime built up over a quarter of a century. The executed president's inner circle of family members and many of his cronies - mostly Sunni Arabs from the Tikrit region of northern Iraq - have been hunted down and are being sent to the gallows one by one.

Former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan, like Saddam, convicted for crimes against humanity over the killing of 148 Shiites in the 1980s, was hanged last month on the anniversary of the start of the 2003 invasion.

Even ordinary Iraqis who despised Saddam were surprised by the sudden December 30 hanging of the man who ruled Iraq with an iron fist - although thousands took to the streets to noisily celebrate his downfall. Footage of Saddam being taunted and then executed was circulated on the Internet, to the delight of many Shiite Iraqis who suffered under his regime, but was widely seen internationally as a public relations blunder.
We rather enjoyed it.
The masked executioners and their sectarian chants were seen as undermining the legitimacy of the process - but this did not unnerve the Iraqi government. Calling Saddam's execution a "gift to Iraq," Bassem Ridha, advisor to Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki, said Iraq was determined to hunt other followers of Saddam. "Definitely this was historic for us. Nobody believed Saddam would be executed. Now that it is done, it has given us a boost, courage despite the mistakes we made," he said.

Barzan Ibrahim Hassan Al Tikriti, a half-brother and former chief of the dreaded Mukhabarat intelligence service, followed Saddam to the gallows January 15. His head was ripped from his body by the rope.
As someone said here at the time, the drop table is in feet, not meters.
Uday and Qusay, Saddam's two sons who were pillars of the regime, were killed in a fierce gunbattle with US troops backed by air power in the northern city of Mosul in July 2003.
Over three and a half years since Uday last raped an Iraqi woman. Thank you American soldiers.
All four have been buried in their home village of Awjah near Tikrit, along with Awad Ahmed Al Bandar, the executed chief judge of Saddam's disbanded Revolutionary Court.

Days ahead of the anniversary of the fall of Saddam's regime April 9, 2003, prosecutors Monday demanded death in the Kurdish genocide trial of Ali Hassan Al Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali." A defiant Majid has been appearing in court with a copy of the Koran holy book, which Saddam had also carried almost up to the gallows, and sits in the same front row seat that had been used by Iraq's fallen leader.
He'll be defiant right up to the moment he's hanged. Then he'll be dead.
Among those closest to Saddam's seat of power only Izzat Ibrahim Al Duri, who has a $10 million bounty on his head, has escaped capture, amid frequent unconfirmed reports of his death. He was Saddam's number two in the decision-making Revolutionary Command Council, having stood by his side ever since the 1968 coup that brought their Baath party to power.

Former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz, who represented the acceptable face of Saddam's Iraq on the international scene, appeared in court earlier this month to heap praise on the executed dictator. "I had the honor to work with the former regime and with the hero Saddam Hussein," Aziz said from the witness stand in the Anfal genocide trial. "He is the hero behind the unity of Iraq and its sovereignty."
I'm going to enjoy his hanging also.
Saddam's wife Sajida Khairallah Tulfah Hussein, and his eldest daughter Raghad, are among the women and children in the former ruler's family who fled abroad before the US occupation, and remain on a US wanted list.
Living a life of ease in Amman. I'd remind King Abdullah that if he wants to have continued access to American military equipment, we want Raghad in our custody.

’Chemical Ali’ takes Saddam’s hot seat in Iraq trial
2007-01-12
Soon to take Sammy's place in a noose.
BAGHDAD - Saddam Hussein’s cousin “Chemical Ali” moved centre stage in Iraq’s genocide trial on Thursday, occupying the executed dictator’s chair in court and confessing that he ordered thousands of Kurds to be forced out of their homes.

Ali Hassan Al Majid, who faces the gallows if found guilty of slaughtering 182,000 Kurdish villagers in the 1980s, spoke from the dock with subdued calm -- in stark contrast to angry tirades delivered by Saddam prior to his death. “I’m responsible for the displacement and I took this decision alone without going back to the high military command or Baath party commander. I say that before your court and before God,” Majid said.

But the former head of Iraq’s northern command, who owes his chilling nickname to accusations that he gassed thousands of Kurdish civilians, denied he was responsible for executing 300 Kurdish fighters. Instead he said that he had written a note to Saddam -- “Martyr, mercy on his soul” -- who pardoned them.
Yeah, sure.
In various audio recordings played by the prosecutor, his voice could be heard branding all Kurds saboteurs and claiming to have received a letter from current Iraqi president and veteran Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani. The letter, according to the voice, asked for talks and mooted concessions in exchange for a halt to government demolishions of Kurdish villages.

Saddam trial for genocide charges resumes
2006-11-27
BAGHDAD - Saddam Hussein’s trial on genocide charges resumes in Baghdad Monday with more Kurdish witnesses testifying one week after a human rights watchdog highlighted what it called fundamental flaws in the deposed Iraqi president’s first trial.

Lawyers for Saddam and six co-defendants are expected to present their witness list during the 23rd hearing of a trial that began on August 21 and was temporarily adjourned on November 8.

The seven men are accused of responsibility for the deaths of 182,000 Kurds during the so-called Anfal campaign, when government troops swept through Iraqi Kurdistan in 1988, burning and bombing thousands of villages. Saddam and his former aides argue that it was a legitimate counter-insurgency operation against Kurdish separatists at a time when the country was at war with its neighbour Iran.

The accused — including Saddam’s cousin Ali Hassan Al Majid, known as “Chemical Ali” — all face the death penalty if convicted. Saddam and Majid are the only defendants facing a charge of genocide, however.

‘Saddam’s half brother and “Chemical Ali” incriminate him’
2005-07-25
BAGHDAD/CAIRO - Saddam’s half brother Barzan Al Tikriti and his cousin Ali Hassan Al Majid (”Chemical Ali”) have made statements incriminating the former dictator during preparations for the trial against him and former aides, the examining judge said, according to the al-Sharq al-Awsat on Monday.
I knew the rats would start pointing fingers at each other, trying to save their own necks. Not that it's gonna save these two.
The former Iraqi foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, had also incriminated Saddam in a statement, the magistrate Raed Jouhi told the Arab daily in an interview.
He might just be able to stay alive if he cooperates
I'd let him think that now and every day, right up to the morning of his execution. "Say Tariq, you know the sounds of carpentry outside your cell last night? Guess what?"
Al Majid, who is charged with a chemical weapons attack on the Kurdish town of Halabjah, said during a hearing that he had done nothing “without an order from Saddam Hussein himself”. The trials against functionaries in Saddam’s regime would begin within a month, Jouhi said. Jouhi stressed that Saddam has denied several accusations against him and had not been forced to make any confessions during interrogation. “He has not been put under pressure from any side,” he added. The former Iraqi president is in US custody although he is officially a prisoner of the Iraqi justice system.

Former Iraqi police volunteer to bring some order to Baghdad
2003-04-12
Former Iraqi police officers have offered their services to US troops in Baghdad, keen to co-operate in restoring a semblance of order, Al Jazeera correspondents confirm. One of the officers said, “I’ve been a captain since 1985. I was one among those who were forced by the criminal Ali Hassan Al Majid to serve at the police Directorate-General. I guess that we, the Iraqi police officers, can restore security in the city within 72 hours, if the coalition forces provide us with badges, cars and loudspeakers.”
And new uniforms. Iraqi police wore military uniform — and we don't want to even allow the appearance of the military and Baath coming back...
The officer added, ”The police are against the criminal Saddam Hussein. The police institute was despised by the Government. The criminal Saddam was supporting intelligence, special forces, military intelligence and his party’s militias only. The police were treated with indifference. Each police directorate only ever had one car. We are ready to shoulder our responsibility if the coalition forces help us by supplying us with cars and badges. The security will prevail within 72 hours....”
"I never liked him. I never joined the party..."
Another retired officer said, “The former government is over. Now we are living in a state of chaos and looting. We, the retired police officers, for the sake of our nation and the protection of our people, volunteer to preserve our country and the people and their properties. We pledge a quick return of security if we get arms, cars, equipment and other sorts of assistance from the coalition forces. We can restore security in Baghdad if we get assistance.”
Yeah. I think I'd have to take some time to think about that real hard, if I was running things...
Brigadier General Mohammed Bandar pleaded for more volunteers to step forward, and for an end to the looting. “I call on brother citizens through Al Jazeera, to end the chaos and looting. These are not the characteristics of the honorable Iraqis. Armed criminals are now free in the streets. I urge them to arrest those criminals who steal the state’s property and hospitals. I also call on the police and Coalition Forces to get involved to end this ordeal.”
