Sadr to sit out 2025 legislative ballot over prevalent ‘corruption’: Statement |
2025-03-29 |
Annoyed that he’s not getting a big enough cut or following orders from Tehran? [Rudaw] Iraqi Shiite holy man and politician Moqtada Tateral-Sadr ![]() announced on Thursday that the National Shiite Movement he leads, formerly known as the Sadrist Movement, will sit out the 2025 legislative elections in protest of "corruption." The X account of Salih Mohammad al-Iraqi - known for channeling Sadr’s views - on Thursday shared a handwritten response from the holy man to an inquiry from one of his followers about the "role of the National Shiite Movement in the upcoming parliamentary elections" in Iraq, slated for October 2025. Sadr responded, "So long as corruption is prevalent, I will not participate in a flawed electoral process that only aims to secure ethnic, partisan and sectarian interests, far from the suffering of the [Iraqi] people and the unfolding disasters in the region." Addressing his supporters, the influential holy man stated, "As I had previously directed them to vote in the elections, today I forbid them from both voting and running" in the 2025 ballot. The complete turnaround notably comes after Sadr had in early March met with former Sadrist politicians at his Hanana headquarters in Iraq’s southern province of Najaf. The meeting was attended by around 200 former politicians affiliated with previous Sadrist parliamentary blocs. Shortly after, in mid-March, Sadr urged supporters to prepare for the country’s 2025 elections, calling on them to vote carefully and warning that poor electoral choices could deepen corruption and poverty in the country. The Sadrists emerged as the top force in Iraq’s October 2021 parliamentary elections, securing 73 seats in the 329-member Iraqi legislature. However, man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... their effort to establish a "national majority" government together with Sunni Arab and Kurdish allies ultimately failed. The rival Shiite-led Coordination Framework then insisted on the post-2003 norm of establishing a consensus government. The deadlock ultimately prompted the Sadrist politicians to resign en masse. After a 21 months hiatus from the political process, Sadr in May renamed his movement as the National Shiite Movement, a move that was widely interpreted as a precursor to re-enter the Iraqi political scene. In mid-February, Sadr urged his supporters to update their voter registration records. However, man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... a former Sadrist politician, Rafi Abduljabbar Azzawi, then told Rudaw that the holy man’s request "does not necessarily indicate a shift in his stance on participating in Iraq’s upcoming elections, but rather to urge Iraqis to take a stand in the critical period ahead." Christian Iraqi who burnt Koran in Sweden sparking huge protests is shot dead 'in live stream assassination' |
2025-01-30 |
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] An anti-Islam activist who sparked outrage across Muslim countries for burning the Koran has been shot dead in Sweden during a livestream on TikTok. Salwan Momika, 38, was ruthlessly gunned down in an apartment in the city of Sodertalje on Wednesday night. Swedish media reported that Momika was streaming live on TikTok at the time he was shot. A video seen by MailOnline showed police picking up a phone and ending a livestream that appeared to be from Momika's TikTok account. The Iraqi refugee was notorious for staging public demonstrations where he burnt and destroyed the Islamic holy book - a stunt that enraged Muslims around the world. A Stockholm court was due to rule on Thursday whether Momika, a Christian Iraqi who burned Korans at a slew of protest in 2023, and his co-protester Salwan Najem, were guilty of inciting ethnic hatred. According to the charge sheet, the duo had desecrated and burned the Koran and had also made derogatory remarks about Muslims. It postponed the ruling to February 3, saying that 'because Salwan Momika has died, more time is needed'. Najem tweeted this morning: 'I'm next'. Police said they rushed to the scene, where they found Momika suffering from gun wounds. He was rushed to hospital and was later confirmed dead. Tabloid Aftonbladet reported that the shooter was able to enter the building through the roof. Five people have been arrested in connection to Momika's death, police said on their website. They did not say if the shooter was among those detained. Momika first sparked global anger in June 2023 when he set a Koran on fire and stomped on the holy book outside Stockholm's main mosque, with several Muslim countries condemning Sweden for allowing the Iraqi man to perform the act during the Eid al-Adha holiday and the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Burning the Koran is seen by Muslims as a blasphemous act because they consider it the literal word of God. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Morocco, Bahrain and the UAE joined in the chorus of condemnation, with the US also calling the protest 'disrespectful and hurtful'. Dozens of Iraqi protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in response to Momika's stunt, with videos showing an angry mob breaking through an iron gate and climbing on top of the compound. The demonstrators also distributed leaflets that carried messages in Arabic and English that said: 'Our constitution is the Koran. Our leader is Al-Sadr'. 'Yes, yes to the Koran,' was also scrawled on the gate leading to the embassy, according to the photographer. Momika later pulled a similar stunt, in which he burned the Koran outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm. The activist received a string of death threats as a result. "That is the least the relevant Iraqi authorities can do, out of loyalty to the Paleostinian and Lebanese people," he added. Libya demands improvements after leaked photos show tiny cell of Moammar Gadhafi's son in Beirut |
2024-05-01 |
[AFRICANEWS] Leaked photographs of the son of Libya's late dictator Muammar Qadaffy ...a proud Arab institution for 42 years, now among the dear departed, though not the dearest... and the tiny underground cell where he has been held for years in Leb ![]() have raised concerns in the north African nation as Libyan authorities demand improvements. The photos showed a room without natural light packed with Hannibal Qadaffy's belongings, a bed and a tiny toilet. "I live in misery," local al-Jadeed TV quoted the detainee as saying in a Saturday evening broadcast, adding that he is a political prisoner in a case he has no information about. Two Lebanese judicial officials confirmed to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Monday that the photographs aired by al-Jadeed are of Qadaffy and the cell where he has been held for years at police headquarters in Beirut. Qadaffy appeared healthy, with a light beard and glasses. A person who is usually in contact with Qadaffy, a Libyan citizen, said the photos were taken in recent days. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media outlets. Qadaffy has been held in Lebanon since 2015 after he was kidnapped from neighboring Syria, where he had been living as a political refugee. He was kidnapped by Lebanese murderous Moslems demanding information about the fate of prominent Lebanese Shiite holy man Moussa al-Sadr, who went missing during a trip to Libya in 1978. The fate of al-Sadr has been a sore point in Lebanon. His family believes he may still be alive in a Libyan prison, though most Lebanese presume al-Sadr, who would be 95 now, is dead. A Libyan delegation visited Beirut in January to reopen talks with Lebanese officials on the fate of al-Sadr and the release of Qadaffy. The talks were aimed at reactivating a dormant agreement between Lebanon and Libya, struck in 2014, for cooperation in the probe of al-Sadr. The delegation did not return to Beirut as planned. The leaks by al-Jadeed came after reports that Qadaffy was receiving special treatment at police headquarters and that he had cosmetic surgeries including hair transplants and teeth improvements. al-Jadeed quoted him as saying: "Let them take my hair and teeth and give me my freedom." Qadaffy went on a hunger strike in June last year and was taken to a hospital after his health deteriorated. Libya's Justice Ministry in a statement Sunday said Qadaffy is being deprived of his rights guaranteed by law. It called on Lebanese authorities to improve his living conditions to one that "preserves his dignity," adding that Lebanese authorities should formally inform the ministry of the improvements. It also said Qadaffy deserves to be released. After he was kidnapped in 2015, Lebanese authorities freed him but then detained him, accusing him of concealing information about al-Sadr's disappearance. Al-Sadr was the founder of the Amal group, a Shiite militia that fought in Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war and later became a political party that is currently led by the country's Parliament Speaker Nabih KnobbyBerri ...Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, head of the Amal Shiite party aligned with Hezbollah, a not very subtle sock puppet of the Medes and Persians... The rights group noted that Qadaffy was only 2 years old at the time of al-Sadr's disappearance and held no senior position in Libya as an adult. Sadr-linked activist found killed in Babil |

Intramural games — they’re Shiites all. [Rudaw] The body of an Iraqi activist linked to influential Shiite figure Moqtada Tateral-Sadr ![]() was found killed in Babil province on Monday morning, a day after he was kidnapped by an unidentified gang in front of his house. Babil security forces found the body of Aysar al-Khafaji dumped on the highway Jableh area, north of Babil, according to a statement from the Iraqi interior ministry. "At a time when the security services in the Ministry of Interior are seeking to establish security and stability in different regions of the country, criminal elements are trying from time to time to disturb this stability, something that the Ministry of Interior will not allow," read the statement. The Khafaji tribe released a strongly-worded statement later in the day, holding the Iraqi government responsible for Aysar’s death and calling on relevant authorities to uncover the perpetrators as soon as possible and hold them accountable. "Condemnations and denunciations have become useless... Enough silence. Enough bloodshed," said the tribe. Videos published on social media of the funeral processions depicted a member of the Khafaji family saying that they will grant Babil governor Adnan Faihan 24 hours to uncover the killers "otherwise all offices shall become our target." Al-Sadr To Bow Out of Forthcoming Provincial Elections: Source |
2023-05-22 |
Governing is hard work. Much better to swan around in the background as a kingmaker-slash-wise man.
The leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada Tateral-Sadr ![]() , has chosen to refrain from taking part in the upcoming provincial council elections expected to be held later this year, an insider revealed on Sunday. The confidant, who wished to remain unnamed, told Shafaq News Agency, "al-Sadr has relayed to the inner circle that he has decided against the Sadrist Movement participating in the provincial council elections." "The clergyman will not back any roster, directly or indirectly," the source added. The influential Shiite holy man has yet to make a firm stand on the Sadrists' involvement in the subsequent parliamentary elections, leaving open the question of whether the Movement would boycott or participate in those elections. "There are ongoing efforts by those close to al-Sadr to dissuade him from abstaining from the local elections," the source commented. In an early election held on October 10, 2021, the Sadrist bloc emerged victorious with 73 seats under its name. Along with Kurdish and Sunni parties, it forged the largest parliamentary bloc, known as the "Trilateral Coalition". However, some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them... they failed to elect the president, who would, in turn, commission the candidate of the largest bloc to form the government. In late March 2022, al-Sadr announced his withdrawal from the government formation process, allowing the Coordination Framework to take up this task. By June, al-Sadr had requested members of the Sadrist bloc to tender their resignations from the Council of Representatives. Days later, the maverick politician entered a state of political seclusion, vowing not to participate in any future elections. U.S. Officials Criticized for Participating in Iraq Forum with ''Known Terrorist'' |
2023-05-06 |
[Shafaq News] The Long War Journal criticized the participation of U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad Alina L. Romanovsky and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf in the Iraq Forum, in the participation of Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq leader Qais Khazali as a "keynote speaker." The U.S. Journal described Khazali as a "known terrorist" responsible for "arming, training and forming the deadly Iranian-backed militias that are known to have killed hundreds of U.S. troops in Iraq." The report criticized the U.S. officials' participation in the forum and their interaction with Khazali, despite his "terrorist designation and history of attacks against U.S. and coalition forces." The U.S. State Department lists Khazali as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. In addition, his group, Asiab Ahl al Haq, or the League of the Righteous, is listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Earlier this week, Leaf began an official visit to Iraq. She met Iraqi and Kurdish officials, including Iraqi PM Mohammed S. al-Sudani and Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi, Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, and PM Masrour Barzani. Scores arrested in Iraq crackdown on al-Sadr-linked group accused of inciting discord, Al-Sadr Freezes His Political Movement for One Year |
2023-04-15 |
Dozens of suspects linked to a group called "the owners of the cause" have been arrested by Iraqi authorities on Friday on charges of inciting discord, according to the judiciary. In a statement, the judiciary said that "the investigative court in al-Karkh has decided to detain sixty-five suspects from the so-called (owners of the cause) gang, which promotes ideas that cause unrest and disrupt social security." The statement added that the arrests were made in coordination with the National Security Agency, which is responsible for investigations. In a surprising announcement on Friday, Moqtada Tateral-Sadr ![]() , the leader of the Sadr movement, declared a freeze of the Sadrist movement for one year. Al-Sadr said, "To be a reformer in Iraq and to be unable to reform the Sadrist movement is a sin," he tweeted. Al-Sadr went on to say that he finds it in the interest of Iraq to freeze the movement except for Friday prayers, the heritage department, and the office of "Sayyid al-Shuhada." He added that the freeze should last for no less than a year "to declare my innocence before my Lord first and my father second." Al-Sadr concluded his tweet with the statement, "I am tired of them, and they are tired of me." Later developments saw al-Sadr's Twitter account and the Sayyid al-Shuhada shrine and al-Sadr's office closed. Salih Mohammed al-Iraqi, also known as the Minister of Moqtada al-Sadr, announced today the cancellation of the supposed isolation of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada al-Sadr, in the Kufa Mosque. In a tweet published on his official Twitter account, al-Iraqi stated that "at the orders of his eminence (Moqtada al-Sadr), the isolation in the revered Kufa Mosque has been cancelled." He added that the cancellation was due to "the actions of the corrupt [...] may God not bless them."
